Our family has been visiting Grandpa's for several years and we're always happy to go for dinner. Aside from the friendly staff and unique atmosphere, the food is wonderful. We get the same food regularly (New Mexico Chicken Sandwich and Alpine Sandwich) and it's consistently good. When friends or family come to visit, we always take them here just because it's amazing. Aside from not having to clean up, we enjoy the way the food tastes and the way they let the flavor of the ingredients stand on their own. If you're looking for fancy, you're in the wrong place. Price and flavor are outstanding. A very local restaurant. The chile cheeseburger was fantastically seasoned and moist. The chile relleno was nice and big, the batter was good - not quite as eggy as I have had, but definitely tasty. Service was fantastic and the staff are all really friendly. It's tucked away from the main drag behind Dairy Queen, but worth a taste. Also a nacho bar w lots of condiments. A must see local spot. read more

I've been here twice while here in Gallup on a business trip. This place gets packed in the evening hours, and I've only been here during the weekdays. However, there is ample seating. Customers range from Family friendly Navajo or Anglos to young hipsters (didn't know they existed in Gallup) to old couples to scary guys sitting by themselves staring at me. Eww. About the food- so effing delish. I ordered an Abuelos plate (juicy hamburger patty covered in green chile sauce with a side of. Mexican rice, refried beans and a green salad. Tasted so fresh. They also have a free unlimited condiment bar with veggies for burgers and chips and homemade salsa! The wait for the food is reasonable, but I end up stuffing my face bottomless chips and salsa. Found this place because of Yelp, and let me tell you I was extremely satisfied! I came in with a fairly large party after a meeting as we were all hungry. After pulling into the parking lot I was a little sketchy of going into the establishment because it looked extremely rundown, but I wanted to show the "big wigs" how you have to trust your Yelp findings. We were all extremely impressed with the food quality as well as shocked after seeing the interior of the place. This is a perfect example of don't judge a book by it's cover! read more

No joke, just get the burger. It was excellent. It has a very distinct flavor. You can watch them grill it. When you get there it looks like a dump from the outside be once you're in it is charming and has a good character. You walk to the counter, order and then seat yourself. Stop at the buffet and get the chips and salsa. It's free, no one told me. Sit, enjoy the chips, look at the cool items on the wall. When you food arrives, open mouth and consume. read more

Tasty joint. I ordered the Alpine sandwich (turkey, Swiss, avocado) w a side of fried mushrooms. The sandwich was delicious and the ratio of meat to cheese to avocado was good. It is served on grilled sourdough toast. Fancy, it's not. The restaurant is one of those places that looks like it has been there forever and has been well used. It's like your old favorite sweater. It doesn't look like much on the outside, and you probably don't want to be in it on your first date but it has a soft spot in your heart. read more

Passing through on our way home to Dallas, TX. We missed our hotel breakfast and wanted something better than Denny's and this place was it for sure! We called at 10:59 AM and even though breakfast was over at 11:00, they said they'd still make us breakfast whenever we arrived! It was fresh and ever so tasty! I had the cinnamon French toast and it was incredible! The portions were quite generous. We couldn't even finish everything. The service was fabulous and the staff so friendly. I didn't read any reviews, but thought the name sounded cool..... so on a whim, we decided to come to Grandpas Grill. It was amazing. The staff was warm and inviting, and the food was excellent. We had a quick one night stay in Gallup just wanted some quick but tasty food for dinner to go. Grandpas grill looked interesting just 2 miles away. Great choice for us we had the Mexican plate with the verde sauce had a little but pleasant bite husband really enjoyed it. I had philly cheese steak with salad and it was great. They made sure we had every thing we needed while we waited and after we returned to the hotel utensils napkins extra sauce for the chips they included. Very nice and friendly local place. We stopped in after the lunch rush hour so not many people there. We ordered the Southwest Chicken Wrap. Which was very good and tasty, price was under $10.00. We had question about the sauce and the lemonade and they gracious allowed us to try both before we ordered. The chips where very fresh and crispy. We got the recommendation from a lady that worked at the Richardson's Trading Company. Stopped here based on reviews. It is off the main road like said. Restaurant is very nicely decorated. It is a little different. You order as soon as you walk in. There is no posted menu so you have read a large menu pretty quickly. I got the hula burger which was good but needs a sauce for it. My husband got the western burger and it was also good. My son got an enchilada and was impressed with the spice. They have a topping bar which is nice but you get your food brought to you and then have to get back up to go get toppings. The ketchup seems to be homemade so it does not taste like normal ketchup. Ps..not a bad thing. Overall it was a nice atmosphere, friendly service, and good food. read more

We ordered some dinner for pick up, and it was by far some of the best take out we'd ever had. We've never had a bad meal here by the way. I had bacon & avocado cheeseburgers with extra crispy fries, and my buddy ordered the chicken southwest with red chile. My burger was so flavorful, the bacon was crispy goodness, and the avocado was fresh. There's a fixin' stand in the middle of the restaurant so you can add whatever you'd like to your burger (lettuce, tomato, onion, jalepeños etc). Their green chile burger is so incredibly tasty! Hatch green chile is a flavor that can't be matched! I love the chips and salsa bar that is self serve. One of my family's favorite appetizers to many meals so we were happy to have that. The service is friendly. Local craftsmen may stop by your table with some of their goods to offer to sell to you. If you like to shop while you dine, several Gallup restaurants have this service offering people in the community a place to sell their jewelry and such, if that isn't your thing then usually a smile and a "no thank-you" will get you back to your meal. read more

Most Gallup restaurants serve coffee in old beat up cracked and chipped tiny mugs. This is a small detail that will bring me back to a great restaurant like Grandpa's Grill. It's a little off the beaten track but Yelp reviews brought us here. Don't be put off by location or outside appearance but apparently it's a favorite for locals. You order up front and there were two specials on chalk board. We split a bacon cheeseburger with onion rings. Order came with a generous order of fries and a large sofa for $9. I ordered a side salad which had tomatoes, shredded carrots - I chose the cilantro lime dressing - tart but good. There is a fixings bar to add to burger and chips and salsa. I agree, burger was indeed charbroiled and very tasty. Fries are so-so - about equal to McDonalds. Unfortunately the restrooms were not clean - thank goodness they did have toilet seat covers!
