They said to sit anywhere, so we pick a table that was just being cleaned, After sitting down, a few minutes pass, they all saw us come in, then ask if we've been helped. I said no. So a few more minutes pass, then the waitress brings us menus, after a few more minutes pass again, the waitress asked if someone has taken our order. (Menus still on the table should indicate to a smart waitress, that nobody has taken our order) I said no. Now 2 waitresses are asking each other if they want to take our order. 1 agrees to take our order, they both leave and 1 comes back and starts to talk with an attitude. We get up and leave, telling our waitress to get it together. This was ridiculous, we made our back in into town and went to Gordo's Restaurant and got service, and had better prices. Virgie's was a good spot in Gallup for a late to go meal. The menu is basic but true to New Mexico. I had green chili enchiladas and the sauce was great. The to go sides of rice and beans were disappointing, but the price was still good for three enchiladas. I was also bummed they didn't include chips with the meals, but it looks like they do if you dine-in. The service was very good and the staff was friendly. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE MANAGER , I asked her a question about my order because I thought we had had a little bit of confusion , I don't know if she was having a bad day but she said "I'm getting sick of you people coming in here and doing this" when I asked who is you people ? (Because I am a person of color) she then rolled her eyes she then was acting very frustrated at the register when I tried to pay and was getting very snappy with my boyfriend I asked her to please stop yelling and talking to him this way she proceeded to get louder until I asked to speak to a manger she then tells me he's deaf so he won't understand what I am saying I said okay I would still like to speak with him because I know sign language , (he was hard of hearing but was not deaf in the slightest) I then told him how she treated me and said she should really be talked to for her attitude.. on the way out she called me MORE THAN ONE SLUR . Our waiter was really great. And the food was pretty good, except the tortilla chips. My complaint is that during our entire meal these random people kept approaching us trying to sell us jewelry and stuff! Every few minutes a new person or child came up to us holding a case of jewelry. They didn't care we were talking to the waiter ordering food, they just lingered there staring until the waiter walked away. They didn't care we were trying to eat our dinner or have conversations. It was really annoying after the first three times, and then they just kept coming! They circled the tables like hungry sharks. Why would they allow these people to constantly harass customers trying to have dinner? It was obnoxious. We just wanted to enjoy our meal. Soooo good!!! I really like the chips and salsa, chips are a bit more solid when compared to others. I ordered and ate up the #8, cheese enchilada, beef taco and beef tostada with red chili. Red chili is a bit warmer than the green chili which isn't the norm for New Mexico but still yummy. The Margaritas are basic but do the trick and are definitely the goto in Gallup. I've tried margaritas at a couple other Mexican food places and it was like drinking Gatorade. The service was sweet and add to the vibe, but took awhile due to the party in the lounge. So I suggest calling ahead during the holidays. There are vendors that come to your table but they do not linger, it is a norm for Gallup. Definitely top 3 for Mexican food in Gallup area. read more

The wife grew up in Gallup - and while we were visiting last week, she insisted we go to Virgie's. Not much to look at from the outside - adult book store on one side, chinese massage on the other, and a sign that looks like it was designed in 1910. But...looks can be VERY deceiving. We sat down and checked out the menu (which matched the sign in appearances). But, they had some REALLY good choices on the menu. I ended up ordering a combo platter of two chicken tacos and a chicken enchilada, all smothered in green chile (when in Rome, ya kna) - no rice, extra refried beans. The wife ordered chicken enchiladas. We kicked back, drank some beer, and munched on chips and salsa. The salsa actually had bite (thought this was illegal in the US, but who knew?), and the chips were definitely homemade. Our meals showed up...and O.M.G. Best damned Mex food I've EVER had north of the border. The tacos were totally authentic, and the enchilada was to die for. And....the refried beans were fresh, homemade, and delish! The green chile (also made inhouse) was the perfect topper. Truly a meal fit for a king. The waitress was just awesome. Great 'tude...and at the end of the meal, she stopped by to check to see if we needed anything else. Stopped here on our way through NM looking for authentic NM style food and we got what we came for. It's a dive, I mean really a dive but it seemed clean which is what matters to me. My parents live in Gallup, so for many years I have eaten Mexican food throughout the town. This place is the best. I particularly love their green chile, not to hot, but wonderfully flavored. Unlike many bowls of Chile that one finds in New Mexico, this one does not include potatoes, though you can ask for beans to be added. Their rellenos are equally excellent, as well as the enchiladas. Charlie, the owner is almost always their and happy greets the visitors to ensure that every desire is met. I recommend this place to anyone who loves authentic New Mexican Food. It is not Tex-Mex or Santa Fe with the frills, but just great food. The setting is not fancy, and the patrons range from locals to tourists. The prices are very reasonable. Food was very good. We ordered enchiladas, tacos and an egg topped enchilada. Tortillas were soft, crispy taco was crispy, chips and salsa were great and the green and red sauces were flavorful. I had the unpleasant experience of ordering food here today. We are first responders so we have little windows to get food so I ordered the food ahead to try and save time to pick it up. The lady on the phone was extremely rude and talked down to me when I was asking questions. She ended up challenging me on the time of pickup stating," Well we're open now so we're going to cook it now." When I asked for a pickup time of more than an hour ahead as we were on our way back from a long distance call so we had a bit of a drive. At the facility the manager was very helpful and voided the order for us but the food was still an hour old and cold. Driving through on i40 and stopped here for dinner. First I'll say the location and surrounding business are a bit questionable, but don't let that stop you. The service is amazing. Our waiter was great and told us tons of things to do in the area. Now the important part, the food. Enchilada with egg on it is a first for this Texan. I know my Mexican food and this was foreign. Virgies has always been a friendly family place but hasn't been open a lot lately due to Covid and supply issues. They are not serving what they advertise currently so be careful of the prices because they have increased. But Virgies is the only place in town that serves and knows what is a rib steak charbroiled and usually delivered the way you asked for it. After 30 years I have finally eaten at Virgie's Restaurant. It's been a long time coming! Why so long? Cause my lame father would never take me here when I was a little girl, that should be considered child neglect. I was a little annoyed that I could only pull up two Mexican restaurants on Yelp.com that actually served margaritas (or any alcohol) with our food. When I have Mexican food I want a nice cold marg on the rocks on the side. Is that too much to ask for in this small town?! So tonight, I sat down with my big sis and we ate some Virgie's Mexican food along with a couple of margaritas. I ordered the 2 tacos and enchilada. My sister ordered the same but with a side of Chile Relleno. My only issue with Virgies is the spicyness or rather lack of. I requested the hottest sauce they had in house. I wasn't happy with the green chile. So I ordered some fresh sliced jalapenos that taste like sweet pickles. I then requested some Tapatio, they only had Tabasco. My goodness ... what's a girl gotta do to get some hot and spicy food! (Hope the owner did hear me haha) I settled for the Tabasco and drowned my meal in the bottled sauce. If it wasn't for the tacos and good margaritas I would of been seriously disappointed. The only thing that would bring me back to Virgie's is requesting my cousin as our waitress. It was a nice delight to see her and chat. Overall, I won't throw Virgie's completely under the bus. Maybe on the side of the street (pun intended per their location) but I won't write them off. Our waitress, not our cousin, was nice and accommodating. However, the little spat the boss was trying to have with our waitress, the owner, as we were leaving was uncalled for in front of customers.
