As a person native born to Houston, but having lived and explored much of the world, one of my favorite things to do is to invite friends to go on a walking tour with me, of the area around the Houston Farmer's Market on Airline. Many years run by the Canino family, as a co-op with local farmers. And when they retired a group of Houstonians, committed to preserving it and making it as nice as possible for shopping. And it's a wonderful place to go shopping for fruits and vegetables and to eat one of the restaurants here. So I usually begin my walking tour with a trip to El Bolillo Bakery to show them the breads and then over to Granel Spices and then to El Rey meat market to show them the chorizo that I like and the freshly made chicharrones and to pointing out the most excellent Mexican restaurant just on the side El Rey. And then heading over to the farmers market proper and showing them the excellent flour tortillas that one can get at Alamo Tamales. A visit to LA Crawfish or other eateries. And also walk and talk about the different uses of the spices and maybe some tropical fruits that people might not be familiar with. It's a great half day and I love taking people around. So definitely plan to visit this area of Airline Drive and have some fun. read more

You can smell the spice from outside the store soon as you walked in you get this heap of pepper right to your mouth or nose you can't help but just kinda cough, when this happens you know they got that spicy stuff! Nice spot very very clean with exceptional helpful service, I was looking for a very spicy rub and I found ghost pepper which ran me about 12$ and Carolina reaper ran me about 18$ this is some of the hottest stuff this ground is hard to find cannot find it anywhere other than spice shops or online. If you're looking for some good spices, herbs, this is the place you wanna come. They do sell it in packages or by the pound they do have an online shop so if you live far, that'll be good for you but whatever you're looking for this placehas. . I think this place is really cool! It had a huge selection and I absolutely loved the mixed seasonings I got as well as incense, among other things. The only reason Im not giving it a 5 star rating is just because of the kinda "mean girl" attitude I got from one of the younger employees. All I asked is which part of the wall was teas and what were just herbs because theres no label differentiating, only what each container had, and her response was to roll her eyes and say "uh..theyre all teas. Blend means tea" which mind you, doesnt say blend anywhere that I saw, and then walk off laughing with her coworker and continued to get side eye walking through the store after. I will definitely come back because I loved the products in this store, Im just disappointed in the attitude especially because it was my first time in the store. read more

Maddy greeted me when I first walked in. She was very sweet, and gave me a compliment on my dress. As I was looking around, Maddy was helping a customer and asked someone else to help, I told her what items I needed. She walked to the back and never came back. Oooh, but then came Angel... Angel got everything that I needed. He was awesome to assist me. He was helpful and worked very efficiently to get me in and out. I can't wait to try the teas I bought. I randomly came across Granel in a social media video (don't remember which) but i saw spice market and was intrigued. I needed some specialty spices and was tired of hopping from store to store and since I'm new to spices didn't want to start online. They measure and package everything for you, which is great and keeps things sanitary. For the most part the items are a minimum of $5 for an ounce. The person that assisted me was aware of product placement whixh made locating items efficient but would try to multitasking and at times slow down the process. Im not sure the happy medium because at times I was also double checking my list to make sure i had everything. Not bad experience, except I was on a time schedule and at one point she went to the back to get a product and was gone for an extended period of time. Got home and one of my spices was mislabeled. I took a guess based on what I had requested. And one product requested was missing. I had over 20 items but because it was all kept with the cashier/assistance no way of knowing ahead of time. Otherwise great shop, great layout, everything smelled wonderful. I've already started using some of the products. Can't wait to use more. read more

I can't speak about there spices because I have not bought any of them but I can speak about their herbs. I bought about 5 different herbs from Granel and the freshness is poor. I bought some of the same herbs from an online source, Starwest Botanicals, and there was no comparison. Starwest's herbs looked, smelled and tasted great whereas Granel's herbs were lacking in color, smell and taste. read more

All the smells! This spot is so darned charming and conveniently located a stone's throw from a Mexican bakery, pottery flea market and produce hall. Talk about a fun combination of businesses! We popped in for some worm salt to accompany a recipe and found ourselves ooo'ing and ahh'ing at the lineup of spices, fun Mexican decor and pottery, bath and body products as well as piñatas and juicing contraptions. This spot is a hot bed for all things herbal and cooking. You'll also notice their stash of local honey and dried herbs/flowers like chamomile, tamarind, hibiscus flowers and so on. When you walk in the front door, you're greeted by a few coolers filled with Topo Chico and Jarritos as well as a small Dia de Los Muertos altar in Anthony Bourdain's memory. Maybe it's just me... but, customer service just seems to be non-existent nowadays. Was trying to find somewhere to buy my spices and teas -- since Sprouts hasn't carry much of my items in quite some time (especially lavender) -- and I just came across this place yesterday. After running across this place online last night, I was so excited to go today. When I arrived, yes, someone said "hello" to me as I walked in, but that was the end of any "verbal" interaction I had with anyone. I only went there for lavender -- and, hopefully, anything else exciting I could find -- but couldn't find it anywhere in the whole store. As I made several loops around the store looking for the lavender, the associates just looked at me, gave me a smirk open for (or some other off-putting look), and turned their heads... no "may I help you" or "can I help you find anything?" [I shouldn't have to force you to give good customer service. I worked in the industry for many years, and always put the customers' needs first... within reason]. Not sure where else to buy reasonably priced bulk spices in Houston (yet), but -- even though Granel has a decent selection of other items-- don't think I'll be coming here again. read more
