So I have visited Penzey's location years ago but now do all my spice shopping from Penzey's online. Their spices are wonderful and have allowed me to venture into a whole new dimension of cooking. Particularly with curries. However my favorite spice that I buy repeatedly is their breakfast sausage seasoning. I use ground chicken or turkey and make my own breakfast sausage and it is delicious. They are prompt in shipping generally takes about a week. I usually order in bulk too as I have switched out most of my spices to Penzey's. I like that they had a little blurb on each spice. And info on what the spice can be used for and with. Kind of like each item at Trader Joe's, IYKYK. Penzey's is my go to shop for spices of any kind. I found them when visiting Buffalo NY and haven't looked back since. Thanks to them I've expanded my knowledge of oreganos, and their minced garlic is the only garlic I'd use if I was out of fresh. Their Greek seasoning is great, as is their cumin. I always felt cumin was a little metallic until I tried theirs-now I'm convinced it was just the brand I was buying before. I started with the small jars of spices to see if they were legit before jumping into the larger ones-and now I get the bags because I know I'll go through them, especially with soup season on the horizon. Awww my first visit to an actual Penzeys store!! Was a great visit here, loved being able to actually smell and touch the products - great experience. I think we spend about 2 hours in here just walking around and making sure we didnt miss anything on our wanted list. They were offering great specials on spices that I probably would not have tried if not for the specials. Store was fair sized but definitely on the smaller side. Employees were very knowledgeable and helpful with any questions that we had. It was a really fun trip to the store. First visit to this spice store. Large variety of spices but very few organic & none fair trade. Salt selection awful, only from polluted Pacific waters. No Himalayan! Also prices higher even than Wholefoods, which sells Fair Trade spices. Service was definitely not friendly, maybe because we weren't wearing designer outfits. But that's not the reason for the 1 star. This is: we made a small purchase then later found in our bag a printed card with a blatant paragraph-long anti-Trump message. Penzey's Spice is the Mac Daddy of spice houses. What is a spice house, you ask? Imagine your cooking. Imagine your cooking in black and white. That is what you are eating now. The easiest way to improve your cooking is to throw out the glass bottles of stale spices that have been sitting for 2 years or more at the local MegaMart and change them out for this stuff. Penzey's not only has almost every spice a Western/European cook will want, but also many spices of Indian and Asian cooking. Three kinds of vanilla and vanilla extracts; 3 kinds of cinnamon plus cassia; 6 kinds of peppercorns, not counting Red Peppercorns (not technically a pepper); every kind of seed you can imagine (caraway, rye, kali jerra or black cumin found in Indian cooking and Rye/Pumpernickle bread, fennel, annatto, etc.). More unusual spices and spice blend such as Cardommon (black, green and white), about 10 kinds of Curry Powder (my favourite, Extra Hot Curry!), and Garam Masala. Schezwan peppercorns, etc. If you use a lot of ethnic spices (Indian, Asian, Latin), you can get them almost as fresh and about 1/2 price in an ethnic grocery, but Penzey's offers both a huge quality and availabilty, but it is all at your fingertips. And still cheaper than the grocery store. On line, spices are even less expensive (www.penzeys.com) and nothing in the world can make me as happy as a $30.00 box of spices from Penzey's. Heads up everyone: Holidays are coming. THROW OUT that rubbed sage that you only use for stuffing once/year for the past 10 years and go get some fresh stuff at Penzey's; it will make your food neon with color when you eat it. Penzey's has regular sales and promotions, which enables us to restock without spending a lot of money. As for the politics, well, if you don't agree with them, go elsewhere. If you want a choice of five kinds of cinnamon or paprika, this is a fun place to check out. Definitely a fun browse. And while Penzey's is no funky international market, they do carry a variety of spices that aren't typically found in your typical store. We have plenty of Penzey's product in our spice cabinet. Never been to a Penzey's store. I cook a lot and I have been searching for how to add flavor to my dishes using natural herbs and spices. Perhaps coming to this store will solve my dilemma. They have a decent amount of spices, seasonings, salts, Dried peppers, and dried herbs. They offer their items in small glass jars, large glass jars, and bags. The staff was polite. I asked a couple of questions, looked around, and here is what I found out: - Nothing is certified organic - The company has a chemist who certifies their products on a stricter basis than FDA - Their warehouse is based in Wisconsin - Some spices are milled at and some are bought from other sources. - Some seasonings are salt-free - The price per ounce for just about any of their seasonings are expensive - They claim that their products contain: no additives, no MSG, no irradiation. - They label all items with "best by" dates - They don't offer samples but they have jars for sniffing for each product. - No 'made by' dates so you can't tell how fresh it is (almost no food manufacturer does this, but it sure would be nice) Hopefully I like the seasonings I purchased - Northwoods fire (spicy) and Mural of Flavor. I'll only be coming here to test out their products and then I'll proceed to make my own blends at home. read more

No rush at all at this place so take your time to open all the glass jars and smell the spices...something you can't really do at any grocery store!!! I love smelling/opening all of them, you can't really learn a lot about spices if you don't smell them :P or maybe that's just my excuse to take a whiff of each jar I see? They have everything from the usual normal staples like garlic salt, various peppercorns, various cinnamons etc then ranging to the more exotic spices like Mahlab (sour cherry pit), Fenugreek, Galangal etc. Unsure if they've got your spice? Just call them. They pretty much try to cover all the spices for all types of cuisines, which impresses me since they're not stocking just based on cookie cutter spice popularity. We really like to grind our own spices but they do offer whole spices here if you want to grind them at home. Also, we love buying their premixed spices. I like using their Sunny Paris seasoning for french style scrambled eggs, yum. My bff also likes their Bradey's cheese sprinkles and uses it by itself on pasta or veggies for a quick meal. The quality of the herbs & spices is better than that of standard grocery store brands and plenty of exotic blends for Middle Eastern, Indian, etc., recipes. I have a running list at all times in my spice cabinet and employees are very helpful in directing me to find everything quickly. Once you get on their mailing list, there are great offers coming in about once a month. So I have a new Peugeot salt mill, and I was really excited to get some cool specialty salt to load it with. That's why I stopped by Penzey's. I walked in and started looking around. I came across some salt, but it was all the same Pacific Ocean salt. I did not see any other salt. A lot of the spices were like this. There was exactly one variety just in different packaging. I wandered around for a little bit, curious to see if any of the three women yapping behind the counter would help me. They did not and kept talking away. I feel like customer service in a specialty store where you are expected to pay should be good. I did not find that here. I was not the only customer being ignored when i was in there. They have tons of different dry rub mixes and mixed spices, too, for those who are less spice-knowledgable. The layout was very cool and I loved the little kitchen area as well. Super cute! They also have a book written by the founder of the store...I may need to pick up a copy. Oh, and the usual spice accoutrements as well. Just a word of caution about spices. Though you may have heard that nutmeg has some hallucinogenic properties if taken in sufficient quantity, I can tell you that it just makes you sick. Out of curiosity, I immediately had to read the couple of people who wrote 3 star or less reviews- figuring maybe they have taste bud disorders or don't know what fresh, high quality spices are like. The 3 star reviews are written as if they meant to put 5 stars, and the 2 star reviews look like they probably complain about everything. This is the simplest review I could ever do, they have the best and most fresh spices. Of course the price is slightly higher, but you get what you pay for. You can use less of these potent spices, and they carry the flavor, which saves money and probably equals the best quality out there. If you don't know or care about quality, then get the grocery store stuff, if you do, get in the car and head to Penzeys. It will change your home cooking life....Im not kidding. I wish I could stock my cabinet full of just Penzey's Spices. They come in perfect sized containers for measuring spoons, stack great, oh and the product in the jar is fantastic too. I have two favorite items from them-- one is the Double- Strength Vanilla (I really don't use any other vanilla extract brand when baking). It's not cheap but completely worth it. The Vietnamese Cinnamon is my other go-to. My God if you haven't had Vietnamese Cinnamon you are really missing out in the cinnamon department. It really is the best cinnamon I have ever tasted! People not all Cinnamon is created EQUAL! I can't find Vietnamese Cinnamon anywhere else- trust I've looked. Just smelling the stuff you can tell the difference. They way Penzey's is set up is very convenient. They have all the spices out in a jar to smell and see, with ingredients listed (i.e if spices are mixed together to create a "Rub") You can spend an hour in this place smelling until your hearts content- good luck getting out without spending money. They have so many different spices- I guarantee something will attract your nose. Penzey's is kind of far from me which may be a good thing, everyone knows the most expensive place in the grocery store is the spice Aisle. Penzey's is a little slice of spice heaven on earth. Every time I go in, I have to wonder what the spice traders like the Egyptians and the Greeks of antiquity and Vasco de Gama would think of this place: all these musky spices in one place and for anyone to buy, not just the ultra-wealthy. God knows we've come a long way and, for me, it's still slightly humbling to see such wealth and bounty under one little roof. I disagree that Penzey's is expensive, and not just out of a sense of historical perspective. Penzey's deals exclusively in spices, and as such you can be assured that you're always buying excellent products from a company that knows the good from the bad, and can price their product competitively since they almost wholesale the spices. I go here at least once every three months to restock my pantry, and have never paid more than $15 for my bag of spices. Try doing that with a few overpriced jars of grocery store McCormick's. Penzey's is special in other ways, too, though. Every spice for sale is also displayed inside a small glass jar, allowing you to smell the spice for yourself and -- if you're brave and possibly unsanitary enough -- taste it. Never tried Turkish oregano? What's this Northwoods Seasoning? Wonder which curry powder is stronger? Just let the glass jars be your guide. If you still want further insight, ask one of the very knowledgeable sales team and they'll be happy to guide you. Have the kiddos with you? Penzey's has an area for them to sit and color, read books or play with toys while you shop. The best crayon drawings even get a spot of honor on the walls next to the cash register.
