Are you ready to get your life back?" That's what I was told at my first consultation. Throughout, I was told I would get better over time. The night of my surgery, I asked to have my daughter with me so I wouldn't be alone, and I was not allowed to have anyone there to advocate for me. That same night, I was served soup that was scalding hot and sustained burns in my mouth, including injury to my tongue. My dentist later told me I was fortunate it did not become infected. I have photos documenting this, but they are too graphic to share. The morning after surgery, I reported my pain as 10 out of 10. A nurse contacted the doctor, and I was discharged without being seen. I was told they needed the bed for incoming patients. I did not feel ready or safe to leave. Communication after surgery was difficult. Much of it was handled through text messages, even when I was in significant pain and reaching out for help. I did not feel supported during that time. Since then, I have been left with bilateral nerve damage, bilateral neuropathy that makes it difficult to walk, and muscle damage. I have since sought additional medical opinions and have been told that no further surgery is recommended and that the damage is permanent. I now live with chronic pain and require a spinal cord stimulator to help manage it. I am losing my business I worked years to build. Have been issued a permanent handicapped placard. Two years later, as my anniversary of the day my life changed forever I live in daily pain. This is not the life I was told I would have. read more

I am a new person with a new lease on life thanks to Dr. Shifflett. After 20 years of living with pain, numbness and tingling in both my hands and arms, body tightness and lack of flexibility, I can now get back to what I loved to do and be active again. I would like to update my review of Dr Shifflett. After my prior review Dr Shift left contacted me by phone and email. He was apologetic and expressed genuine concern for me. He asked if he could review my Cat scan and spent time going over it and making his recommendations. I would have returned to him for my next surgery but he doesn't take Medicare and after paying cash for my 2 prior surgeries I need to proceed with a doctor who accepts my insurance. A Truly Exceptional Spine Surgeon and Team: Dr. Grant Shifflett I recently underwent a foraminotomy with Dr. Grant Shifflett and cannot speak highly enough about the experience--from initial consult to post-operative care. After seeing two other well-regarded neurosurgeons, one told me fusion was my only option, and the other offered a 3D-printed disc replacement with the caveat that if it didn't work mid-surgery, he'd have to convert to a fusion. That uncertainty didn't sit well with me. Then I met Dr. Shifflett. With clarity and confidence, he explained a minimally invasive approach that directly addressed my condition without jumping straight to fusion. I can't speak much to some of the reviews with the Insurance -- That is a nightmare on its own. Dr. Shifflet is AMAZING. I had two discs in my neck replaced and WOW.....the neuropathy in my hands is just about gone, and the tremors in my fingers are almost totally dissipated. I was skeptical since he had so many good reviews about his work --- no one is that good right? This guy is. I did not have a halo, and the scar where he went into my neck looks like a vein, I am on week 3 and feeling so much better. The first few weeks were tough. The two discs that Dr. Shifflet replaced were 100% collapsed. When you would see them on the CT -- They looked bad....and that was me lying down. When I stood up, it struck a nerve. Hitting a bump while riding a mountain bike...tragic. After getting the new discs (2), it was a bit of a stretch (as in the neck). That extra little bit was super painful (but getting better), nonetheless, this was absolutely one of the best surgeries I have ever had. I am not quite back to my old productivity nor can I yet lift anything heavy, but I wish I did this years ago and avoided all the nonsense with Pain management. I did not expect the results to be this dramatic. I know I will still need a lumbar disc to be replaced as well (Failed previous surgery with an ugly scar -- different Doctor) later this year. I can tell my neck is doing better, my lower back is starting to complain again. I am hopeful that Blue Cross does what is right and gets me fixed once and for all! read more

I have had 2 spinal surgeries with Dr Shifflett. He's a good surgeon, but not good with after care. He is not interested in seeing you after surgery. Now I am dealing with another surgery where I will need a spinal fusion. He sent me for the MRIs but had not seen me to go over them because he wants another type of scan that my insurance won't cover. His office asked me if I still wanted to see him and I said yes. They said they would ask him and call me back. I had the MRIs June 6 and I still have not seen him. I finally found a surgeon through UCI who is excellent and with a great bed side manner. He spent 45 minutes with me thoroughly explaining my scans and describing in detail my problem and what I needed to do to fix it. He also said the test Dr Shift left wanted was not necessary. I am so happy I made the decision to meet with Dr. Shifflett last December2020. I was dealing with neck and nerve pain for years. After 1 week recovery i was able to move my head with no nerve pain. Probably the most educated and skilled cervical surgeon in the area. He's direct and really knows his stuff! My neck is awful. He was upfront about my surgery with him being difficult due to my damage. I am having pain again and want to go to him... but his staff set up is terrible - basically no "patient onboarding". Duplicate info. No info. Confusion between institutions. *sigh* I'm not looking forward to all the hassles. With today's CRM upgrades, this should be so easy. He deserves the very best. His assistant, I believe, is in another country - based on chaotic communication. It probably bothers me more because my career involved "onboarding" and having "processes". read more

I was referred to Dr. Shifflett by another Regenerative Orthopedist who said to me that if he were ever to get back surgery I would only go to Dr Shifflett. I was dealing with pain for at least 2 years taking pain meds on a daily basis. Finally decided to have surgery. I Had my C6-C7 ADR Feb-2022. My only regrets is not having my surgery before. The website claims that Dr. Shifflett takes Medicare, however when you call his office he does not accept it. He will only treat older folks if they pay out of pocket, which to me speaks of a serious ethical deficit. So if you are older, find another doctor. This one is not interested. read more

I've been seeing Grant Shifflett since I was 18 Years old I'm 20 years old now I've been dealing with Severe Back Pain and Pain in both of my legs and feet and Dr Shifflett has been super patient and supportive he tried to avoid My artificial disk replacement much as he can which proves he is a patient and not pushy doctor we finally agreed to do the L5/S1 Artificial Lumbar Disc replacement because my Herniated Disc was completely done for and he did my surgery at the Hoag Hospital in Irvine I was walking the same day and out the next day he did a fantastic Job no complications he is a super caring and nice doctor he really cares about his patients he treated me like family I really recommend anyone dealing with Back pain or neck pain to see him he will help you and will really takes his time and put his effort into helping you I could not have asked for a better surgeon he is definitely one of the most skilled and caring surgeons out there I've seen lots of doctors and surgeons no one came close to being as skilled and smart and nice as Dr Grant Shifflett!!! I made an appointment with this doctor in February for a date in March. Earliest i could see him. After waiting a month for an appointment his assistant called and said starting March 1, they no longer took my insurance. I have to believe the office knew about this in advance. I had been in pain the whole time. But wait, it gets better. I just got a bill from my insurance company. He charged my insurance 3 times in February for 3 appointments having never seen this doctor. Thousands of dollars. I did talk to his nurse 1 time on the phone, but i never stepped foot in his office and have never met him. read more

I had surgery with Dr Grant Shifflett April 4th 2018 and I had to write a review regarding him not only as a surgeon, but the best orthopedic surgeon in Newport Beach and Marina Del Rey. I have been treated at both facilities and I can say I am beyond pleased. I have had other surgeries in Newport Beach by an orthopedic and it was not a good experience. Dr Shifflett is professional, takes his time with you and will do anything to make sure you fully understand what's going on with you. Professional and confident doctor in my book with excellent bed side manners which in my books goes a long way with doctors. I reached out to get 2nd and 3rd opinion about my surgery, all agreed with same conclusion, for the neck infusion. I chose Dr Shifflett, because he came highly recommended and so thankful I went with him. During the discussions about my surgery he spent time explaining exactly what was needed and why I needed the neck surgery. He answering all my list of questions without rushing me out of his office and without interruptions. Day before surgery, he squeezed me into his busy schedule at the office to discuss the surgery and his plan for the surgery. I explained to Dr Shifflett my fears and that I felt my life was in his hands. When I left his office that afternoon, I felt safe. The morning of the surgery when he came to see me, I had NO fear at all, I trusted I had made the best decision in my choice of doctors. I felt his knowledge, experience, kindness and passion that I was in good hands. After the surgery, he was always a phone call or text away. The hospital staff @ Marina Del Rey Hospital, was EXCELLENT. Recovery of my surgery has been long, due solely to the surgery itself. I have almost full movement of my neck, NO ugly scar, almost unable to see the scar at all. Only used pain bills once or twice when I got home. Hardest part is and was sitting still, relaxing, adjusting to the neck brace which allows the neck to heal from inside out. What an amazingly talented doctor! It's been 9 months since my cervical disc replacement surgery so it's a good time to write a review. I started having numbness in my left arm in March 2019. Unlucky for me, we were under COVID lock-down in California so many doctors' offices were either closed or operated limited hours. I didn't even know what type of doctor to see. So I searched on line and found out my symptoms matched that of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a disease that has no cure. I called a couple of neurologists and the appointments were months out. I don't remember how I found DISC sports center but I remember the conversation I had with the receptionist. She thought I was crazy calling the office not knowing who I wanted to see. But after I described my symptoms, she firmed said I need to see Dr. Grant Shifflett. I was given an on-line appointment within a week. Dr. Shifflett made me feel at ease right away. He's professional, knowledgeable, and he carefully listened to my symptoms and family history. He explained the possible causes and ordered a number of tests. The first test was an EMG/Nerve Conduction Test. In this test a nerve is given a small impulse and the conduction alone the nerve is recorded. The test quickly ruled out ALS. Such a relief to know I'm not dying, LOL. I then took a series of imaging tests. The last one was an MRI which revealed the damaged cervical discs that caused nerve compression. Dr. Shifflett explained to me that my condition required surgery. Within a week of the diagnostic, the office scheduled me for disc replacement surgery. The surgery was done in the same building as their office. It took about two hours. I was scared going in but it went very smooth. When I woke up in the recovery room, the numbness in my arm was gone, like a miracle. It was so wonderful to feel whole again. I won't go into length about the recovery but I do want to point out that the office called a few times after my discharge checking on my condition, which I thought was so nice. Dr. Shifflett and his team are such wonderful people to work with. I was treated with a great sense of importance and urgency. On one of my office visits, I ran into people who traveled 2+ hours to see Dr. Shifflett, which made me feel extremely lucky to have such renowned doctor in the close proximity. I will definitely recommend Dr. Shifflett for people who need spine and disc surgery. read more

I came to the DISC medial group because of a business relationship with Dr. Bray. I was referred to Dr. Grant Shifflett and feel so fortunate to have found him. The first thing I noted was that he had already studied my reports and films when we had our first appointment so no time was wasted. My first impression was that he was a gentle man. I always feel like I'm his only patient and I have his full attention for as long as I need it. He diagnosed the need for spinal fusion. During the discussion regarding surgery, it turns out there was an insurance issue. When I thought there was no hope of solving the problem, Dr. Shifflett took it upon himself to contact all parties involved and was able to get authorization for the surgery. I don't know of any other doctor who would have gone to such lengths. I had the surgery just six days ago and am progressing as expected. My confidence in Dr. Shifflett's abilities was well placed and I would have no problem referring anyone to him. read more

I really can't say enough good things about Dr Shifflett. He gave me a brand new life. He's highly skilled, extremely professional, personable, and courteously laughs at my dumb jokes. I had severe cervical trauma (C5-C6 and C6-C7) that called for a 2 level artificial disc replacement. This isn't an easy procedure and like all surgeries, it had its risks, but Dr Shifflett performed the procedure perfectly. He got me in for surgery within a week knowing how important it was to get in fast. Dr shifflett took his time explaining everything to me in great details and going over my MRI and CT scans. Talked to me multiple times before and after surgery. The Disc outpatient facility was great with great nursing staff also I cannot complain about anything dealing with my experience. I saw two "prominent" surgeons in the Los Angeles area who both recommended a surgical intervention for my cervical radiculopathy. However I didn't feel comfortable with them, felt rushed and dismissed. I found Dr. Shifflett, and from my first appointment, I knew he was the only choice for me. Met Grant once and he seemed fine and he ordered an MRI for me after the x-ray. However, the receptionist (Brandy?) is atrocious. She NEVER returns your call. I think she is no longer working there, but the new person won't return my calls either. Is it something I didn't say? I just want the office to forward my MRI order to the imaging center. How hard can that be? Thank goodness I'm not currently in pain. Can't use this doctor if his front desk folks are incompetent. Hopefully the front desk problems get resolved. read more
