He fit me into his packed schedule (of course the units picked the first hot spell of the season to act up), diagnosed a refrigerant leak, and set about fixing it. If you're not familiar with mini-split systems, the difference between them and central air is that where central air cools air at the condenser unit then circulates it through your house, mini-splits circulate refrigerant, cooling the air at various "head units" throughout the house. The advantage is that mini-splits are easier and faster to retrofit into old buildings. The disadvantage is that there are many more places for a refrigerant leak to hide. Josh filled the system with UV dye and came back late in the evening to check for leaks. He found a couple of egregiously loose fittings---a sure sign of shoddy installation by the other company that had installed the system. At this point, he suspected there were probably loose fittings elsewhere. He's keenly aware of how expensive refrigerant is, and how bad it is for the environment when it leaks. With that in mind, along with the fact that the heat spell had broken, he suggested we hold off on refilling the system until he could come back and do a full system walkthrough. When he came back, he pressurized the system to its max with Nitrogen, so he could check for leaks without wasting refrigerant. It just so happened to be the hottest day of the year (so far), but that just made him more determined to get the system running for us. He worked thoroughly but quickly and got our system running better than I think it ever has. I'm profoundly grateful for his hard work and dedication. I cannot recommend him highly enough for any HVAC work you need done.

Called around to several HVAC companies and most were closing at 5pm or wanted to schedule me the following morning due to an incoming snow storm (2024 Winter really sucked this year). To my surprise, a friend of mine recommended Northside Mechanical, a local private company, who were there within an hour and resolving my issue shortly afterward. He came back on Tuesday with a permanent fix and we started talking about updating my HVAC system and hot water heater. Not only was the price reasonable for an emergency call, but I received a GREAT QUOTE for a more efficient HVAC system that includes Air Conditioning (my prior system was heat only), and an updated, more-efficient hot water heater (the old one was rusting and on its way out). A couple weeks later, Andrew was here with his partner working on my HVAC system and had it all done in a few hours. They came back a few days later to do the hot water heater, and they'll be back in a month to work on the Air Conditioning unit after the snow melts. Bret was recommended by Brenda at Charlton Oil. I called Bret on a Saturday afternoon, and he returned my call right away. He agreed to come by the house the following Monday to assess the situation and prepare an estimate. Bret called that same night with the estimate, and said he could do all of the work (drain the oil out of the tank, replace tank, install a new filter and oil line to the furnace) later in the week if all parts were available. He called on Wednesday to say that everything was ready and he and his son could do the work first thing Thursday morning. Bret and his son arrived, and all work as accomplished that morning. NIGHTMARY EXPERIENCE:…read more Last Thursday I hired Apex Plumbing to remove a small plastic bottle that had accidentally been flushed down my toilet. They were unable to come that evening, so they sent a technician the following day while I was working out of town. A friend let Jared into my home. When I returned home four hours later, I discovered that my bathroom had flooded. Dirty water had spread into my hallway, down the stairs, and into the kitchen ceiling below. The toilet had been scratched, the handle was broken, the bathtub caulk had been damaged, my shower curtain and bathroom contents had been soaked, and the toilet still would not flush properly without manually operating the tank. When I turned on the kitchen ceiling light, water came out of the light fixture, so I immediately shut off the breaker. I contacted Apex that evening and again Saturday and spoke with the owners, Jim + Holly. They sent another technician to clean up what he could, but the damage clearly required professional water mitigation, not just surface cleaning. After he left, my licensed plumber nephew inspected the toilet and found it was leaking and he repaired it. By Monday, my carpet was still wet and I still had no clear plan from Apex. To prevent further damage, I hired an independent restoration company. Their inspection found active moisture in my kitchen ceiling, and they immediately began mitigation with industrial dehumidifiers. The damaged carpet was removed, the area was sanitized, and part of my kitchen ceiling had to be opened because it remained wet. When I informed Apex and requested their liability insurance information, I was told they had planned to "get a guy over there tomorrow or something" for restoration and carpet cleaning. By that point, several days had already passed, my carpet remained soaked, and I had already taken steps to prevent further damage because I had not received a timely plan or follow-up or insurance info. What disappoints me most is not that a mistake happened--mistakes can happen in any business and we are human. It's the lack of communication, urgency, accountability, and follow-through afterward. As a fellow small business owner, I believe how you respond when something goes wrong says everything. I simply cannot imagine going into someone's home, destroying it, and not saying a word. This situation has delayed preparing my home for sale and has required countless hours coordinating insurance, restoration, and repairs for damage that occurred during what should have been a routine plumbing visit. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Apex Plumbing. I hope no one else ever has to deal with this.

They came third time (charging me for another visit) re-snaked mainline and remained clear 2-3 days. Each visit, I was asking what is the cause, the technician was essentially uncertain but assured me was ok, at conclusion of each visit. No camera placed in line to diagnose. (They Said they didn't have with them- and if did have/use, would be several hundred dollar extra charge). When issue re-occurred for fourth time within 10 days, I finally wised-up and contacted another plumbing firm, who came out that same day, diagnosed issue (used camera) and cleared blockage that same day and performed needed repair the following day, digging and replacing trap in line. In nutshell, if all you need is snake job, Apex is capable to do this However, when I needed correct issue diagnosis and repair, they were of no help. Actually, They compounded the problem and home damage from excessive main line backups by not diagnosing and correcting the issue.
