    Blood orange chocolate chip

So many great flavor combinations that it was hard to choose. I had the blood orange chocolate chip and it was the perfect treat on an unseasonably warm Fall day.

    A good sign outside

ORIGIN: This location opened in Spring 2023 as an expansion of the Granby-based ice cream and is owned by two Connecticut residents -- Brandon Pappalardo (Granby) and his brother in law, Mark Spoule (Ridgefield), who purchased the original Granby-based business the previous year. Pappalardo brings experience in the food industry, most recently serving as executive chef at a restaurant in Plano, Texas. CONCEPT: The shop offers traditional ice cream flavors, as well as some that may be considered more unique or sophisticated (i.e guava; goat cheese and blueberry; orange and dark chocolate). Regardless of the flavor of choice, ice cream is offered in a wide range of preparations, from cone types to sundae toppings ($.93 each). The shop's goal is to bring happiness through ice cream-based treat, as highlighted by the sign at order line -- "smiles start here" -- so a variety of conceivable customer wishes have been anticipated. LOCATION: The location on New Milford's historic Bank Street makes it easy to bring smiles to community members as the shop is within a short stroll from popular destinations, such as the movie theater and town green. Old-fashioned floor to ceiling windows cast ample sunlight into the little shop. EXPERIENCE: The interior decor suggests different sections, or perhaps that a theme has not yet been decided. On the eastern wall there is a beige mural of colorful painted logos associated with New Milford that brought to mind a sticker-covered laptop. This wall is lined with a vintage-looking bench and wooden cafe tables. Opposite this wall is a bright turquoise painted wall with glossy orange text declaring "wicked good". Hightop 80s style tables and chrome stools line this wall. Guests pass the seating area to place orders in the back, which is painted white and lined with New England clapboard woodwork. I chose to experience some of the uncommon flavors prepared by Grassroots. The first was goat cheese blueberry, topped with toasted coconut. The toasted coconut is not what I anticipated (flakes of coconut toasted brown), but rather white sprinkles composed (I assume) of coconut. These offered a nice crunch contrast. I was unable to detect the goat cheese, likely given the highly sweet nature of the ice cream. Likewise, I was unable to discern the base flavor of the second-- orange dark chocolate topped with hot fudge. There was a generous amount of dark chocolate fragments, and a less generous drizzle of hot fudge. Tastings of more commonly flavored ice creams suggest that some flavors are easy to detect. Given that it is now possible to easily access ice cream that is both flavorful and unique from other ice cream shops (i.e Bart's (MA), Jeni's (OH), Maple Valley (MA), McConnell's (CA), Van Leeuwen (NY)) while grocery shopping, the main draw to Grassroots - New Milford for me is its proximity to local sources of entertainment. SERVICE: Many people are available to help, and I found that they were very patient... it is hard to decide order with all the options! TIPS: Pints of ice cream are available for purchase, as well as New England bottled sodas (Hosmer Mountain and Harmony Spring) that well-accompany ice cream (cream, root beer, black cherry, raspberry) inviting an option to prepare ice cream sodas at home. As in many shops, flavor taste spoons are available, so be adventurous in exploration of unfamiliar flavors. A mobile truck on 21 Higbie Road in Morris is in the works. Keep posted on the shop's website, Facebook, and Instagram. Gift cards are available.

    Chocolate with peanut butter cup.

This new ice cream place in New Milford does not disappoint. The ice cream is very tasty! I enjoyed the Chocolate with peanut butter cup on a sugar cone and my husband had a pistachio also on a sugar cone. I was impressed they offer dairy free ice cream. We will definitely be making a return trip. They've been open just over two months. A really nice addition to Bank Street.

One Scoop - Vanilla Ice cream, hot fudge, and whipped cream.

My first time trying Grassroots in New Milford, CT. Grassroots offers some unique flavors. My husband had his same old plain vanilla with hot fudge and whipped cream. I opted for Nutella Fudge Cheesecake with peanut butter sauce, toasted coconut, and whipped cream. I was eyeing the blood orange chocolate chip and this could be the flavor I try the next time I visit - Grassroots.

I am not, in truth, much of a dessert person, much less an ice cream person. I am even less of an ice cream person on a cold, wintry November day. But we happened to walk by after lunch and the children were enticed by the happy looking kids licking their cones on the other side of the window. Grown-ups were enticed by the cute, old-fashioned signage. The menu was vast and interesting, including offerings like goat cheese blackberry, mascarpone strawberry, lime raspberry braid, honey lemon green tea, pumpkin Oreo, raspberry cola, rose chocolate, rose strawberry jam, etc... We wanted to try them all, but the kiddos settled on chocolate peanut butter cup and churro flavored ice creams. I imposed the Mommy Tithe and based on what I tried was blown away by the vivid flavors, especially the high quality vanilla used in the chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream. The texture of the chocolate PB ice cream was old fashioned in its best sense: dense and rich from heavy cream, similar to Van Leeuwen ice cream in NYC or Ben & Jerry's circa 1995, before it was bought out by Unilever. The churro was convincing in its flavor profile, but the lick that I managed to finagle under the watchful eye of my 11-year old was a touch more icy than ideal. Great little shop with young, friendly, high school-aged employees on our visit. Scoop sizes are generous and at $4.66 a scoop, some types of cone included, a bargain for those of us who have become sadly accustomed to NYC pricing a la Noi Due. I suspect this is going to be a regular stop.

Cute ice cream shop with unique flavor options. Ice cream was tasty, and the shop wasn't too busy so service was fast. The store was very clean and cute. Ice cream was a bit pricey (~$5 for one scoop). Nice location on bank street and a good addition.

Super cute spot for ice cream in downtown New Milford. Stroll around the block and check out some of the cute shops, and finish off with a sweet treat! I was drawn here for the unique flavors. The goat cheese blackberry was delicious! Their menu also includes must try flavors like honey lavender, lime chocolate chip, and blood orange chocolate chip just to name a few. The two people working were very kind and patient while we tested flavors. Go check them out!

Rude service by only 1 particular woman always. It takes away from the magic of the yummy ice cream.

The calamari app was very "good" as was the tuna app. I had the panko crusted Drunken Chicken which comes over mashed potatoes and VERY fresh and delicious vegetables, Massive and VERY good! Wife had the Sea Bass which she liked, but the risotto it sat on was bland. The Burgers are massive and my son rated it "very good" but had better. See the slab of bacon on top in pic. Yes the Out of This World Mac and Cheese was delicious even if not my style... They still carry a fine wine and craft beer selection including many locals. The service was good yet they sent us away because no reservation, said over an hour wait. Left phone anyway and they called 10 min later. Water with hummus dip came quickly, yet waitress was slammed. She was very pleasant and delays were acceptable being they were packed at 7PM on weekend. Ambiance had not changed from the traditional pub style with a large happy bar. Very clean with good energy all around. Will add this back onto our regular list. Keep up the good work!

Everything was cooked to perfection, with the steak being cooked medium rare. I also ordered passion fruit martinis since it was a seasonal featured drink for summer and they didn't disappoint. It was delicious, refreshing and packed a punch and I had two since I wasn't driving lol. The service was exceptional as it was welcoming, friendly and attentive. Definitely worth every ounce and I plan on returning soon.

The entree, penne alla vodka, was delicious. The sauce was creamy and cheesey, and the plate as big as my head, with bread on the side! I had lunch tomorrow. The pizza is 'average' at best -- even the specialty slices. What differentiates this place is that they make the toppings fresh so if you order a Philly Cheesesteak slice, they cook the meat then melt the cheese on top, etc. Same with the Clams Oreganato or Cheeseburger slice. I always see and or smell the toppings being made fresh to-order. Strangely, sometimes the pizza is cool and the toppings hot, or vice-versa. Err! I definitely don't question the freshness of anything -- like I said, a solid '3.' Nice size salads with ample dressing portion! Prices are very reasonable. I never see the same girl there twice, the younger girls are very friendly, the older women not so much! If you dine-in, sit in the back! If you sit up front at the counter, you have to deal with Fox News on the tv, a lot of delivery staff nonsense and take-out traffic.
