This is my go to spot for breakfast wraps. To die for, bacon, lots of scrambled eggs, caramelized onions, and cheese. Great sandwich! The scones and muffins are great as well! Pretty awful service. Was not greeted or acknowledged when we walked up to the counter, none of the food was labeled... Had to ask a million questions to find out what was gluten free/vegan. Menu didn't have those items noted. Dude at the counter was disengaged. Told me what was in a muffin, I bought it and found out it's not what he told me. Had to call. Food service should be taken seriously especially with allergies and special diets which Grassy Roots touts of being keen on. The $13 bowl of take out veggies was good and it's worth noting the avocados were not brown at all. I feel like they have a good product but management needs to step in and train staff. The food here is fresh and good quality simply prepared but the customer service is HORRIBLE. When you walk in the door you are glared at by the employees as if you barged in on them. Upon taking your order they are so condecending its off putting. The general theme is we dont have to try, dont need your business ( we already have several sucessful restaurants and this is just a side thing) and cant be bothered while I chop these vegtables. Every time I have either stopped in or called in an order I have had a negative experience with customer service not blatant rudeness but this underling passive agressive its your privilage to be in my cafe and an irritation for me to help you. DROP the TUDE you are a cafe on RT 1 A not FINE DINING in NYC. Shop has a nice atmosphere and sell goods of high quality , When you walk you it look like little small town cafe but there is always unattended laptop of the owners out or the young staff chatting away. It is very expensive and most of the products do not have the price on them. Forget about asking how much something is you will be given a stare and nasty attitude from the staff. No coffee menu or prices visible? Needs to be a bit more welcoming and customer friendly. read more

Great atmosphere! Really nice people working there and the coffee was ya-ummy! We stayed and sat for a while ... and then HAD to try the dreamy smoothies and they were really good. Not a hello or a smile upon entering Grassy Roots. The owner is on site but is extremely unfriendly and does not seem to enjoy customer service. Her answers to questions regarding ingredients or the menu are curt and rude. I ordered a smoothie, for $7, and watched her as she made it. The smoothie consisted of a little fruit, juice and lots of ice. Obviously not worth the high price. People really want this place to work but the owner needs to be a part of the community, smile and get to know her customers better. Responding to complaints by saying no one else is complaining is ridiculous. People are complaining (no decaf, no protein powder, no posted hours etc...) so she needs to dig her head out of the hole and start working with her paying customers or there won't be any left. read more

I stopped in on a walk looking for something to drink. they don't brew there own ice tea so i bought an honest ice tea which I like but really if your a coffee/tea place you should have your own fresh brewed iced tea even if only in the summer. i also got a blueberry which is remarkedly similair to the one from CoffeeTime in salad which better than Dunkins but not overwhelming. The sandwhich menu does look interesting and the girl behind the counter was friendly so I might check it out for lunch at some pont. Also I did not notice hours posted anywhere. read more

Popped in last week for a quick lunch and there were so many good choices on the menu i could barely decide. Went with the chicken salad lettuce boats and they were incredible! Served with fresh avocado and tomato and evoo, every bite was delicious. The prices were very reasonable, I was impressed. Almost every lunch choice was $8 which is rare for food this fresh and healthy. The baked goods looked delicious too, wish I'd had room for them :-) read more

I have stopped here a few times in the past for coffee and/or a breakfast sandwich and both were fine, pricey but fine. I stopped here on my way home last Thursday evening. It was 6:40pm and I wasn't sure when they closed. I figured 6 or 7. The open sign was still in the window and the girl was still behind the counter so I walked in the OPEN door. She greeted me with a snarl and said "We're Closed" as if I should've known this and I was an idiot! I apologized and said I saw the OPEN sign in the window and didn't realize. I was stepping back out the door and she did offer something in the case if I wanted but everything else was put away. I thought this was very kind of her so I looked in the case and there was a couple pieces of salmon left and a black rice salad mix. I took a muffin off the counter and got a bottle of water. While waiting at the counter she packaged the food but was handling everything with force and a look of hate on her face. Yes, I realized she was pissed at me. She rang up my bill, $5 for muffin, $7 for a small container of rice (about 1 1/2 inches deep), $2 for water and $10 for the salmon (lunch size portion). I said, "Thank you so much, I really appreciate this. Have a good night." I received silence, nothing, no acknowledgment that I spoke! This was my last and final stop, never again will I give them a dollar!!! The food is very pricey but it was tasty, I will give them that. However, I live in this town and was so embarrassed that travelers on 1A who stop here could be treated like this. No wonder the surrounding towns consider us as uppity and snotty. read more

I don't know how much longer this place is going to stay in business if the owner/staff continue to treat customers with flagrant rudeness and disrespect while serving overpriced food to customers that frankly deserve more. It would be one thing to pay high prices for mediocre sandwiches and smoothies if Grassy Roots' ownership and staff were, at the very least, friendly and engaged in the community, but unfortunately they are surly, disrespectful, rude, and have no interest in customer service whatsoever. They seem to be unhappy and cross with everyone who walks in the door. It is amazing that locals put up with this place. We thought we'd give it another shot after previous less-than-satisfactory experiences, but this last visit ensured we won't be back again. For starters, the owner helped a customer before us who had quite obviously jumped the line, even though she acknowledged us first. When we politely told her we were before him, she gruffly said we had been "standing in the wrong line" (we were the only other people in the place besides him). Then they botched our order. When we sent it back, we ended up waiting 8-10 minutes while the owner proceeded to make sandwiches for others (there was now a line). I have never seen such horrible customer service. Any owner worth their salt would quickly apologize and rectify the order, but we were left standing with no indication of her getting to it any time soon. We ended up canceling our order and decided to eat elsewhere. By the time we left, there was a line of people visibly annoyed by the slow service. The owner and one other counter person seemed totally over their heads trying to keep up, so it was not surprising they screwed up our order. If they had any clue about running a take out place, you would know it takes more than 2 people manning the counter during lunch hour if you plan to offer made-to-order sandwiches, smoothies, lattes, and salads. To top it off this place is filthy. The area behind the counter where the sandwiches were being made was strewn with rotten and discarded veggies and grime coating the dirty floor mat and prep area. There were bits of food splattered on the wall and windowsill that you can see from the register. To make matters worse, the owner making the sandwiches twice pulled her hair back in her messy bun WHILE SHE WAS PREPARING FOOD. Disgusting. We will not be back. read more

This is a great roadside stop on 1A. They have excellent coffee, fresh delicious muffins, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, juice bar, soups, salads. Look for the "open" flag. You can park in the back - off busy route 1A too - on the side near the fire station. Very worth your stopping. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but the salad dressing that came with the Madison is so good I'm now using it as a base in a chicken salad, after having already used it to dip Italian bread in last night. I'm sad it's gone! Full of fresh herbs and a little citrusy. I want to try to replicate it. I thought to myself "if I was the person who made this salad dressing I'd like to hear that". So I got the yelp app just to share. I think the place is pretty great all around. You must be a little out of touch to find it expensive, a large sub is eight bucks these days and ingredients of good quality are expensive too. Needless to say everything I've had here has been good quality. My only complaint would be that once I got the Bryson Bowl and they forgot the black beans. I could have gone back and had it corrected I'm sure, but it didn't matter that much to me. Don't listen to the star rating, it gives the wrong impression! read more
