Great fresh food. Busy little place but the staff is efficient and friendly. We stopped here to load up for a whale watch and were very glad that we did. The sandwiches were fresh, creative and delicious. It took a bit to receive our order (over 20 minutes) but the staff was working as fast as they could. Decided to try this local spot on a whim and so glad I did. Originally I was just going to grab a salad and head home, but the atmosphere is so inviting I had to stay and dine in. A delicious grilled chicken salad and some sparkling water later and I had a lovely table right next to the window. It was a nice retreat to be able to people watch and enjoy a good meal. Superb service, friendly staff, and fast delivery of food all make this place a delightful place for a lunch, by yourself or with some friends. I was kind of worried that Gloucester would be a vegan desert, but it turned out to have a great vegan dessert! Puns aside, this place is great. The menu is super customizable, with pitas and wraps and salads. I designed my own falafel salad by taking the California salad, asking for vinaigrette on the side, and adding falafel and hummus to it--absolutely amazing. But the hands-down best part of this place is the vegan soft-serve. They have one size and I don't know what they call it, but I'd call it ENORMOUS. A ton of soft-serve with the mix-ins of your choice (which are actually blended into the soft-serve), and then you can top it how you want. I got the happy cow flavor (berries and chocolate chips) and it was incredible. Favorite place in Gloucester by far. read more

I usually do not rate restaurants, but I feel it is important to let customers know this. I ate at Bischo today and the service was excellent and it is a nice place to sit. I eat plant based so I got the black bean veggie burger pit roll up. I began to eat it and realized it was spicy with something like chipotle maybe I am not sure. It is all you tasted. I do not understand the need to put that kind of spice in a black bean veggie burger. The menu did not state it was spicy. I would not have ordered it if I had known. I ate half and did not enjoy it. I took the other half home and maybe will eat it or throw it away. I wish the menu had stated it was spicy. I've had many vegetable based burgers and if it is spicy it is labeled. At first glance, you might think "$8 for a pita wrap? That's expensive." But ALL of Cafe Bishco's meals are big enough to share with another person. The frozen yogurts are also big enough for two. "Everything here is big," said the vegan owner to my party as we sat completely stuffed, looking at the other halves of our meals. There are lots of vegan options. I had the #18C - a roasted vegetable wrap that was heaven in a pita. It took about 4 minutes longer than everyone else's food to arrive, but I'm not complaining. The sweet potato, eggplant, zucchini, summer squash, and other veggies were cooked perfectly; warm, flavorful and deliciously tender. The vegetables weren't oily, which I appreciate. There was delicious hummus and a spring mix of salad greens tucked around the edges of warm vegetable. The ingredients were very flavorful and tasted extremely fresh. "All of the vegetables are organic," mentioned the owner. I could only finish one half of my wrap, because I desperately wanted to try the (vegan!) tofu frozen yogurt. The frozen yogurt is a plain soft serve. There's a huge selection of things you can put into the frozen yogurt, ranging from ginger to peach, and including just about every kind of candy bar. I asked the owner which options were vegan and told her I wanted something minty and chocolaty. She suggested the peppermint and oreo, and gosh was it good. The oreo and peppermint were mixed into the yogurt, like a Dairy Queen Blizzard. I haven't had such a delicious frozen yogurt since before I was vegan. The oreo was soft and crunchy, and the mint gave a nice zing at the end. My cousin went for butterfinger and skor bar in a milkshake, which he said was the best milkshake he had ever had. Oma ordered a peach ginger frozen yogurt, after seeing two other people order it. Surprisingly fresh tasting. The other carnivores in my party had the chef's salad, meatball sub, chicken bacon club, and smoked salmon sandwich. They all said 5 stars; perfectly cooked, VERY fresh vegetables, and just the right amount of seasoning. Our food arrived quickly, within 10 minutes. The whole place was exceptionally clean; the kitchen was spotless. You can see the kitchen, because it's right behind the counter. Nice BIG, CLEAR menu posted right on the wall, which was nice for my Oma and Opa who have trouble reading sometimes. Very friendly and attentive service. They do take-out, and delivery is free. This should go without saying, but you can modify anything you order. There's eight tables, a big couch and coffee table. A modest selection of chips and chilled beverages, including most drinks you would find in a cafe; water, soda, Snapple. It would be nice if they stocked some exotic sodas like Jones' and Virgil's, which are all vegan... I'm looking at you Miss Cafe Bishco :) I am going to be coming back here next time I'm in Gloucester. read more

I need to credit Bishco with a first: it's the first time that I've been to a restaurant that would not serve me a cup of tap water. Seriously. I dine out all the time, and I travel a lot, and I've never experienced a restaurant in the United States that did not provide tap water. If you order $40 worth of food for your family and the restaurant won't serve you four cups of tap water (during a heat wave!), that should be a red flag that this is a place that cuts corners, doesn't give a cr*p about its customers, and doesn't deserve your business. If I still lived in Gloucester, I would be at Bishco weekly. I love their selection of food and especially their lemon orzo soup. It's just soup perfection. Perfect amount of rice and chicken and oh, the lemon broth - heavenly. Happened to be in the city the other day and downtown, so of course, I had to pick up a bowl to go. The bread they gave me with it was also really good (two kinds). I'm happy to see they are still thriving despite the pandemic and will for sure return next time for more soup (I swear one of these days I will get a sandwich with it because that selection sounds amazing). read more

We ordered take out from Bishco last night for the first time. Service on the phone was very friendly. Great selection of sandwiches, salads and soups. We ordered a grilled cheese panini, 19 Breaded Eggplant, sun dried tomato and mozzarella, a veggie wrap and a prosciutto panini which all cane with chips. The wraps were huge and the paninis were substantial, too. I definitely could only eat half of my sandwich, which was pretty tasty but the eggplant was thick and a little tough. The teens enjoyed the veggie wrap and grilled cheese. My husband felt like his panini was adequate but missing a little seasoning or maybe some herbs to give it punch. I would try them again for sure, the prices are totally reasonable, the portions are large and there are lots of options for vegans and vegetarians! I really love the sandwiches here and their soups. I know they also make great salads too although I've never got one. I usually go with "The Combo" where you pick a 1/2 sandwich and a soup or salad. You can Combo any way soup/salad salad/ 1/2 sandwich. Anyways I just wanted to give them a shout out for always being quick and clean. Always having fresh tasty food. Every aspect of the Turkey BLT sandwich (of whoms special name I can not currently remember) is sheer perfection. I have not had a sandwich this good except for two places that I can recall in my adult lifetime. The 'crout and dressing add a special unique touch. The bread is delicious, albeit tough on the gums but undeniably hardy, toasty, tasty and great. The little deli also has really fun goblets that you can drink your bottled beverage from if you request a glass! Don't be shy! Only thing I would suggest is making it more obvious where I should put my dishware and trash when I've completed my meal. The young female staff member that just chased me away after parking in front of your store, needs a lesson in simple manners. I did not know you are doing "pick up" only. I was trying to get a smoothie for my kid that has a sore throat, (not that that even matters). Instead of her aggressively telling me I "have to leave and order from somewhere else", she could have chosen many different ways of polite interaction. I get you might be having parking issues on Main Street, but if you're instructing your worker to talk this rudely and aggressive to a potential customer, then you've lost any future business from my family. read more

Such affordable and delicious soup, sandwich, and dessert place! Came in when the power on Main Street stopped working and all the restaurants were closed and this place miraculously still had power. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and taste of the food! Got the pita bread roll and the hickory turkey pressed sandwich. They were so cheap and so good! Bishco has a huge menu and manages to get it all done in mediocre fashion. Some items shine, like their sandwiches and froyo, both offering great quality and huge portions for what you're paying. However, anything else on the menu here doesn't make the cut in my opinion. At the end of the day, its a place worth checking out, but any cafe that uses microwaves as its main source of cooking doesn't deserve 5 stars. This place used to be really good and had a unique menu. But it has become bland and really slow. My last visit was ruined when I found a long thick black hair in my roll up. I am gray and mostly bald for the record. My Thai chicken roll up was over filled with very soggy rice and little else -- though the menu listed many other things. It used to be a fresh and tasty sandwich. This is the blandness I mentioned. A sandwich my son ordered was equally plain. I don't know if it is new ownership of what. This place is great. I heard about it through my friend Maria's blog on vegan places in New England. She found out they had frozen tofu yogurt and other veg friendly wraps. My boyfriend and I were in Gloucester for a Schrooner cruise last Monday on Columbus Day and after wards we stopped by the Cafe for dinner to go. He got the vegetarian roll-up with avocado/cheese and I got the falafel/hummus one. At first I was thinking how the prices are kind of high just for a roll-up but then seeing how big they were I was like we got a great deal! The sandwiches are HUGE. I mean HUGE. 1/2 a sandwich is still huge. It definitely is a 2 meal sandwich. And they are good! With lots of yummy fresh ingredients. I also got the frozen tofu yogurt with Oreo and peanut butter mixed in it. There are tons of toppings to choose from to mix in. This place is very similar to other Turkish cafes in Boston like Cafe Amsterdam. If I am in the area I will certainly be back! A must for vegans. They are also really friendly too. read more

While looking for a place for dinner we found Cafe Bishco. I really enjoy saying "Bishco." Go on, try it. I find myself in a crappy Russian accent while doing it. Anyway the food. The board menu is a little intimidating but once you take it all in they have a decent amount of choices for you to choose from. What's nice about this place is it has a good half and half of vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. Usually places only cater to one or the other, so this restaurant having a mix of options is really nice. Also the atmosphere really fits into the area, as it's nice and clean, but still has the feeling of a mom and pop kind of like the record store and indie movie theater near it. I personally had the teriyaki chicken wrap which was really good and very well priced. If you're looking for a good well priced meal this is a great place for it. read more
