Grateful Bread is a Lincoln gem. I have been coming here for years, indulging in the constantly changing menu of vegetarian and vegan soups, mac and cheese, scones and cookies. Occasionally they even have cinnamon rolls but get there early because they are to die for and when they're gone, that's it. Staples you can almost always get are the Moroccan tomato soup, chipotle mac and cheese, cheddar cheese scones, and their mouth-wateringly amazing Santa Fe chowder. Typical rotating soups and macs feature Asian and southern flavors prominently, often with curried soups, lentil soups, creole seasonings, and many different cheeses with macaroni. Recently they have branched out into non-soup territory, featuring a biscuits and gravy or rice and beans. Always check Facebook first because they post their menu daily, along with surprise closings. We sometimes like to joke about GB being closed on Monday and Tuesday as "hippie weekend." A line out the door is very common at peak hours but it never seems to take that long. Pricing is amazingly reasonable, less than $10 per person. read more

If I had to wish two things of Grateful Bread was to be open always for me to walk in at my leisure to get a helping of some amazing soup/mac and cheese and oh god the cheese scones. The second thing was for me to wish that I carried cash/my checkbook with me when I'm in the mood for it. Those things in mind, I still adore this place. I'm all about supporting local businesses especially small restaurants that serve quality food. I'm so happy this place has such a strong following and understanding customers. I understand the whole not accepting plastic thing. It may change in the future, it may never change. I'm not going to really sweat it. I always get AT LEAST 2 meals when I go there. If I get a bowl of mac and cheese, it's so filling. I'll almost be in agony from my food baby I'm about to have but then still excited that I'll have food saved for later. Best soup in Lincoln, and their cheese scones are unbelievable! I have never had a bowl of soup that I didn't absolutely love. And it is made from scratch, not in a microwave. It is so good I tried eating two bowls once. Big mistake. Food coma for the rest of the afternoon! They also had cinnamon buns for a short while that are almost as good as the cheese scones. Bring those back, please! The atmosphere is out of the norm, and, as someone who gets tired of being bombarded with marketing, this place is kind of refreshing, as they stand for the things they believe in as much as they believe in their food. I haven't lived in Lincoln for years, but whenever I return for a visit, my first stop is ALWAYS Grateful Bread. The space is wonderfully unique, eclectic, fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously. I usually spend the time I'm waiting in line taking in the hilarious decor, and I find something new every single time. The food? Oh my goodness. A daily rotating menu of soups, mac & cheese, rice bowls, scones, cookies, and brownies, all of which are dreamed up by the Flotree family. The Moroccan Tomato soup is one of the best things I've ever tasted. Ever. This is a true family business. Mother, Father, and Son are the only people I've seen working there (and I've been more times than I even dare admit). The Flotrees are therefore able to run their place just exactly in the way they want. This does mean often having to wait in line while Son serves each person individually, and it does mean that their hours are a little irregular. But they continue to have people (like myself) not only willing, but happy to wait in a line out the door every single day. The experience of Grateful Bread is atypical, but oh is it divine. read more

Wow. A place that only offers soup and mac and cheese. And no bread with the soup. And the soup is flavorless. We were very excited to try Grateful Bread after reading all of the fantastic reviews, but were sorely disappointed by our experience today. We had the Greek bean soup and the Hoppin' John, a cheese scone and a brownie. To be fair, the scone and the brownie were fantastic. But the Greek bean soup was absolutely flavorless, even with salt added, as was the Hoppin' John. Both were no better than something that we could make at home. If the only thing that you sell is soup, then it seems like they should be amazing. The decor is eclectic, but doesn't have a real theme. Is it '60s hippie inspired? Is it kitschy kids toys? Is it random things picked up over the years because they seemed cool? Hard to know. One last thing - the 'to stay' bowls were disposable, as were the water cups, which doesn't mesh well with the '60s feel. Not somewhere we will return. read more

Sadly, I have to lower my rating for this place. Any more these days the soup I get here is seriously lacking flavor. Such a disappointment because it used to be amazing. That's not the only issue, they raised their prices and you no longer get a free piece of bread with your soup. A tiny little bowl to go with a scone cost me something like $7.50 and I would compare it to a small appetizer. And what happened to the kick ass brownies?! Great food. Terrible service/professionalism. We jokingly call them "Soup...if we're open." The kitchy hippy thing is cute until I drive across town to buy scones or pick up lunch only to find out a) they aren't open (during their "regular" business hours) b) they no longer have scones (depends on their whim) or c) they no longer make soup (or sandwiches). Yum. This cool little soup place is run by a couple and their son. They make THE BEST vegetarian soups from wonderful international recipes. I love the Moroccan Tomato (though it kind of upsets my stomach). Also, the Santa Fe Chowder is fantastic... Really all of their soups are good. Their cheese scones are OUTSTANDING. When you get a bowl of soup, you can choose from a cheese scone, french bread, or a muffin. I submerge bits of my cheese scone in the soup and love it. It's tasty, good for me, and filling. They also have really good cookies and sweet scones, but their brownies are killer, to-die-for... Probably the best place ever!!! All vegetarian soups, but not only that they are the best soups I have ever had! They have Moroccan Tomato soup everyday, but the rest varies (usually 5) vary daily. The baked goods are not only wonderful, but literally everything they make is great! The food is HUGE, so a bowl of soup will definitely fill you up, which is a shame because it means you can't also have the delicious mac & cheese unless you agree to share. The food is inexpensive, but if you are feeling broke 3 or 4 people could probably split two items, if one of them is the very filling mac & cheese. They post the soups of the day on their Facebook page, so you can browse from work before venturing out. Go early for lunch -- there are only a few tables. Don't be afraid to bring carnivores. Forget that it's vegetarian -- it's simply the best soup in town. The complexity of flavors in the Moroccan Tomato makes me weak in the knees every time. Also, the macaroni and cheese -- Chipotle, Blue Cheese, Greek -- is delicious. but quite filling. Buy one and share with a friend. And while I was at first annoyed by the long line, single staff behind the counter, and cash only, I now believe it's all part of its charm. My favorite Lincoln spot. I have never been disappointed by anything I've eaten here and I love the quirky interior decorations. Everytime I go I get a mac AND a soup because I can never decide. The portions are great and I can get 2 meals out of them. Every once in awhile they'll also feature delicious unique sandwiches. Being a vegetarian I also love that I can walk in and order anything on the menu. I really enjoy eating local and that this is a family owned and operated business. Visited this place in early March - had an excellent Morrocan stew over white rice. Excellent flavor, and decor was funky and fun. They didn't have any rolls when I was there, and I'm a bread and soup gal, myself, so felt a bit disappointed. But I'll return, the soup selection was great. read more

A Lincoln favorite. There's always a huge line and the line usually takes twice as long as it should take but it's worth it to eat the delicious food. I loved the Tibetan noodle soup but haven't had it in several years because they either don't make it anymore or I don't go on the right day. The chipotle Mac and cheese is phenomenal. I LOVE this place. The vibe is super fun, although during the lunch rush service can get a bit slow. You are served in paper plates, but I've never minded, and it has a special charm of it's own that I haven't seen since I lived in Portland, or in some places in Seattle. Their soups are amazing, but I nearly always get one of the mac and cheeses. Their cheese scones are really fabulous and the cookies (especially the pretzel one is so good) are delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough. I've waited in line for 45 minutes to be served. It's worth the wait. The pasta lately has not been al dente, there was a time when it was perfect. I usually only go for the Santa Fe chowder, and the wu tang cookie. My kids love that cookie, it has sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, I dream about them. read more

This is one of my favorite spots by far. Amazing soups that change every day. I have not had a soup that did not make me smile with every bite. In addition, each soup comes with a choice of a fresh baked break (which often includes delicious cheese scones). I have also tried their home-made macaroni and cheese. This is no noodle in cheesy-sauce, this is great al dente noodles that ooze pure cheese, and are complexly flavored. I highly recommend this vegetarian place.
