Amazing sandwiches!!! I got the Terrapin and my boyfriend got the Franklin Tower. They were both excellent and actually cheap for the size of them! If you're shy or not super hungry, sharing is definitely an option. The tiny shop is just about big enough for 4 people to stand in at a time but there are benches outside and a park down the block which is perfect for a fall picnic. We were looking for an affordable deli, and while "affordable" and "Aspen" don't go together, I'd say that this place is affordable for Aspen. I ordered the chicken chipotle panini and the sub sandwich that comes with sprouts. I can't remember the name of it, but really enjoy sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts and those are difficult to find. It's a hole in the wall and there is no room to dine in, but there are a couple of little tables next to the sidewalk in front of the shop. I'm not a fan of the Grateful Dead, which is their theme, but this will still be our go to sandwich shop when we're in Aspen. read more

The first place that came up was Grateful Deli, a unique little sandwich shop located right in the heart of downtown Aspen. I ordered the Eddy Out with no cheese and chicken. It was delicious! Was excited to try this place when visiting Aspen. Walked by 2 minutes before opening and walked in to buy sandwiches and a tshirt. An employee told us they were not yet open which was fine but she was EXTREMELY rude. 5 minutes after opening a fellow customer went in and she yelled at him also. Owner should be aware of the extremely poor customer service. They lost customers that day and I am sure other have experienced the same. read more

Grateful Deli is the perfect place to eat lunch as a local in Aspen. The prices are so cheap, and the portions are humungous. First and foremost, the owner is a super nice guy. He is down-to-earth, and he makes you feel super welcome in this tiny little shop. For $7.50, you get a sandwich that makes two meals and a punch card for buy 10 get 1 free. I love the Bertha ($7.50), which is essentially an Italian sub. The meats and cheeses are great quality, and the sandwich is layered perfectly so that you can taste all of the ingredients. My veggie friends love the vegetarian options too. Anyone can eat here and love it. Cards accepted! read more

This deli is a complete joke. We went there for a quick takeout sandwich, and the drama between the pretentious woman taking the orders and the two chefs made the experience miserable. We wanted a quick wrap to take away, and the staff got into a fight with each other -- two out of the three employees walked out. We were in a hurry to catch a plane, when I ask for our money back due to the short staff and the long waiting time. The sandwich maker refused to give me back my 10 bucks. It was a complete joke, and I was miffed by the whole experience. It was their bloody fault that they have the Three Stooges working behind the counter, they shouldn't take their disfunction out on their patrons. Stop by the Grateful Deli for some great sandwiches. This place is a bit of a local hangout and around lunchtime, you'll most likely see a line streaming out of this very small and popular joint. Grateful Deli offers a nice selection of sandwiches and paninis. For $1 extra, you can turn any of their sandwiches into a panini. The panini options include the Pigpen (ham, swiss, honey mustard, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar), Darkstar (roast beef, red onion, provolone, Dijon mustard and horseradish mayo) and the Magic Mushroom (marinated portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, pesto and provolone), just to name a few. The Magic Mushroom ($8.75) was delicious, made with great, high quality ingredients. Same can be said of the Slipknot sandwich ($7.95), made with pastrami, homemade coleslaw, tomato, swiss and Dijon mustard on a sub roll. There are also salad options as well as build- your-own sandwich option. There are a few chairs and tables just outside this hole-in-the wall but a better option is to enjoy your sandwich at one of the local parks, with at least two within a block of this place. Best place for a sandwich in Aspen. But their is no seating inside. And Be Polite dont talk on your cellphone when inside the the restaurant. They dont have seats, you can call in your order and have it waiting for you. Or have it delivered or order it right then and there. 1 Guy on the phone, and 2 make the sandwiches. They have a extensive menu for such a small place. I ordered the Morning Dew Sandwich. For 1.00 more I could of had it as a Panini. But it was good just like it was. It consists of Ham, Bacon and Tomato and Mustard and mayo on sourdough bread. It was served warm, and a few block walk back to the Bottom of Aspen Mtn I Sat Down and Dug into it. What am I grateful for today? The sandwich I ate from Grateful Deli - the Darkstar! Roast beef, provolone, red onion, Dijon mustard and horseradish mayonnaise on a grilled foccacia bread. It was just bursting with flavor. The bf and I were starving after a noon yoga class, so we stopped by the deli to pick up some sandwiches. The gal taking our order was super friendly and helpful. My bf didn't want cheese or mayo on his Mexacali Chicken, so she substituted avocado and Dijon mustard. The sandwiches are huge! They cut them up in half and wrap in foil, put them on a paper dish, and wrap again in saran wrap for you to take to go. Extra star because they offer Sweet Leaf Tea. I had never had this brand before and its delicious! I tried the Mint and Honey, along with the Pomegranate...both excellent flavors. Sandwiches run about $7-$9. You could easily split one if you're not super hungry or a big eater. Check 'em out and be grateful such a fantastic deli exists on Main St. in Aspen! read more

I don't even know what to say about this place. I HAVE to type because any time I try to say anything about it I start salivating. This was an amazing sandwich! We were walking back to our hotel from the Aspen Brewing Co where they had menus for the deli there. We asked them if it was good and they told us that they were awesome so we decided to check it out. I'm glad we did. I can't remember the name of the sandwich but it was the buffalo chicken one. I love sandwiches but I usually have to change things up to the way I like it, but this sandwich was perfect, I didn't change a thing. We wanted to go to Aspen to try out all of the cool restaurants they had, so when we had to stop at this little place and just get some quick food, it instantly made it one of the higlights of the trip. read more

Fantastic little sandwich shop! They have a huge variety of awesome combinations and have some of the best panini bread I've ever had, fresh, crispy, but still soft on the inside. There's hardly any room inside the store so count on eating outside at their sidewalk tables or taking your food to go. The sandwich portions are GENEROUS for the price, particularly for the area. OMG this place is a little gem! I ordered a turkey sandwich on their hoagie roll. Per their suggestion: skip the regular bread and go for the roll. And they are right. That roll is soft and chewy and delicious! My sandwich was so huge I could only eat half. This place is perfect picnic fare: order a sandwich with all the fixin's and then head out to one of the many park areas in town to enjoy a proper Aspen picnic. read more

Either the owner or manager was enormously disrespectful when I mistakenly walked in and the place was closed. I didnt notice the tiny closed sign and the door was unlocked, plus it was just before noon on a thursday, so I was a bit surprised. But when the British gentleman behind the desk insulted me for not noticing the tiny closed sign, i really felt compelled to write something public. You don't treat new neighbors and local physicians like this, we have a very public sphere of influence. I look forward to encouraging others to find alternative dining options in town. read more

Bad BAD attitude!!! Walked into this place just as a customer was finishing up. The woman behind the counter looked at me, saying nothing. No hello, no how can I help you. So I said I just need to order and she told me they're on a one customer in the store at a time basis...scolding me as if I should automatically know their policy. So I remained polite and explained I hadn't been there before and asked what was good and she answered everything. I then made the grave mistake of asking if they had soup and she got SO annoyed and started rattling off everything they DON'T have and then totally exasperated she told the other staff that she gets the soup question a million times a day. I'm just a brand new wannabe customer! I didn't want to waste time by reading the extensive menu off the wall and keep other customers waiting outside in the cold, so I figured why not hurry things up and that's the response I get?! I walked in excited for lunch that I assumed would be good based off the line of people waiting outside...but I'll never know since I told the woman she'd been rude to me since the moment she saw me and then I left. I ended up getting 2 soups and 2 sandwiches from Bearden around the corner and everyone there was nice and not abrasive or rude for no reason! I grew up in the restaurant business and then served for 13 years...no matter what kind of day I was having, I NEVER took it out on my customers.
