I toured this venue with my friend and her fiance. I don't have much to say about the facility itself. The grounds are beautiful, but the interiors are quite dated and not very well kept. The rental options for furniture and decor are limited and incredibly overpriced. The outdoor ceremony space was lovely, but I was extremely concerned about the level of noise coming from traffic (it's right off a main road). Certainly the last thing you want while exchanging vows.... Now my main concern is their customer service. My friend and her fiance ultimately decided to move forward because of the beautiful outdoor space. Their response time was extraordinarily slow. I understand they have a skeleton staff, but boughts of no communication for a week or two at a time when trying to book a wedding venue is unacceptable and a huge red flag. A few days after signing and paying the deposit, my friend encountered a medical emergency that stripped their ability to have a wedding completely, due to unforeseen and very heavy funds. When they notified the venue they responded that they would not be returning any of their deposit (after yet another couple weeks of no response). Now listen, I'm the first to understand contracts and deposits, but there is a serious discussion of ethics here. The Portland venue I did events at for several years also had strict deposit policies, but we would NEVER keep a large deposit from a customer experiencing an already stressful medical emergency, especially if they notified us just days after signing and paying said deposit. They have all the power in the world to at least try and meet half way, but at the end of the day, they simply don't care about anything other than making a quick buck. Please please please be EXTREMELY cautious when looking into this venue for your wedding, I promise there's more beautiful and affordable spaces out there, and certainly better people to support. read more

I've been writing this review in my head for the last month because I knew I had to make it as amazing and I felt towards our venue and the owner, Samantha. My now-husband and I looked at 6 venues and none could compare to Gray Gables Estate (GGE). Besides swiping yes to my future husband, choosing GGE to be our spot was the best decision I could have made! The venue itself is breathtakingly gorgeous, serene and just beautiful. We wanted everything outdoors - and it worked magically. But - the very BEST thing about GGE was Samantha. She is the owner and wedding coordinator, and by the end of our wedding, I wanted to marry her instead! She was flawless in every step, she knew what myself and my bridal party needed before we even asked. She literally anticipated every single thing you could imagine. She facilitated all the rentals we would need, so that I only had to work with her. She suggested tons of great ideas which were all perfect. She was accommodating to my random requests (brought in baby goats!) and politely dealt with some unruly groomsmen during rehearsal. Day of wedding was so stress free for me, and all because of Sam! She wrangled the cake delivery, musicians arriving, DJ coming, GOATS!, photo booth, and allll the rental deliveries! I attended a wedding here earlier today and wow. Just wow. This venue just blew me away. I am writing my review based on my experience as a guest and I have, honestly, not even spoken to the family who threw the event. They originally were planning to have the wedding outside but changed at the last minute since it was pouring down rain up until about 30 minutes before the ceremony but you really would not have noticed since everything was so well put together. The ceremony was stunning but afterwards I walking around the lit grounds with my jaw dragging on the ground because everything was so emaculate. I am a gardener so I truly appreciate really well tended grounds with amazing blooms and this was just that - someone cares for this site and it is not just thrown together like an apartment complex grounds with some bark dust for good measure. The manor inside is gorgeous and the table set up was lovely. Their staff was so couteous and really on top of everything so the bride and groom could just enjoy their big day and not worry about anything. They were good about communicating with the mother of the bride too for clarifying questions just to make sure they were doing everything correctly. The food was amazing! Well presented as well. Touring this place as a wedding venue, it's clear the grounds are beautiful and it truly is a hidden gem. However there are some cons to Gray Gables I thought I'd share as a bride looking for a venue, to maybe help others looking as well. The bridal house and room was a major letdown. There's no beautiful decor, just some green rugs and a standard hook in the ceiling for your dress..there's been no love given to that room so it's plain and boring, besides the gorgeous windows on the house. The grooms house is a cool 1800's stable with a pool table and is actually nice. Gray Gables is located RIGHT off of Mcgloughlin Blvd. this means you'll hear tons of traffic where you see the beautiful garden area and tall white column building. We heard a fire truck and police sirens go by very loudly at around 5:30/6:00pm and that was a big deciding factor for a no. You can't predict traffic and that main road has had an increase in crime in the last few years..it's very busy and can get very loud. All that is blocking off the traffic behind the green fence in the garden is the tall bamboo you'll see in photos. Jennifer was great and was helpful and very quick to let us tour which was SO nice. However, GG is a very strict venue and they have to do the following: 1. Their own catering 2. Their own chair/linen rental company 3. Their own bar and drinks 4. Their own DJ Etc... It's all very nice if you have an endless budget and don't care about possible cheaper options or better options YOU would like for your day, but I really didn't like that. I also got the vibe that they really control a lot there and it's more than my liking. She made a lot of "recommendations" throughout the tour when I had questions and it seemed like a lot of "they know best" attitude and that they'll handle everything. Which, I'm sure they do know a lot seeing as that's their job and they see a lot of weddings, but each bride is different with their own likes and dislikes. I personally don't want that vibe for my big day. The ballroom was horrible (in my opinion of course). The dark carpet with print dictates SO much of the decor in the room and would clash with the light/elegant theme we're going for. They had outdated dark wood on the walls, black table cloths on the tables, and simply horrible black and gold chairs from the 80's. Of course I was told I could rent covers or beautiful wedding chairs from their rental co. but at $5 a piece for at least 100 chairs, that's another $500 to simply replace their horrible chairs and I'm still left with the ugly carpet. I'm dumbfounded as to why they have 6+ $30,000 crystal chandeliers on the ceilings (that are gorgeous) when the room itself is outdated, dark, and just rather ugly. I thought of ways to change to room with hanging fabric and intimate soft wall lighting but Jennifer told me that my idea was rather "night club and they try for more classy, so they don't recommend that" lol. I was just thinking out loud about possible ways to cover up their ugly room. She also thought we were crazy for suggesting snacks and drinks in the bridal house for when us ladies get ready. It was $6,000 for a Saturday wedding for the venue $1000 for their DJ $350 for just the bartender fee before the cost of the alcohol $35 starting per plate (one option: chicken, pork, veg) + 20% gratuity charge would be at least $4,000 for a basic food package for 100 people That's already around $12,000 for the most basic package BEFORE you factor in any decor, food upgrades, desserts, drinks, wedding cake, etc. that you want. Of course, I loved the idea of having the reception out in the garden and would want it there but I'm planning a September wedding and it's Oregon..it's sunny one minute then it could rain or snow the next. read more

The venue is absolutely gorgeous - timeless and classy. The staff are friendly and very willing to answer any questions you may have. The cost is a downfall, especially being right between a car dealership and a U-Haul lot. The parking lot is very small and street parking is narrow and kind of a pain. The food is wonderful! The bartenders are friendly! The wait staff is decent, although during my reception cake was slammed down in front of my guests, they weren't able to choose the cake flavor of their choice and we were VERY rushed during our reception so they could prepare for the next wedding that same day. read more

Wow, our friends recently got married here and for a relatively small to mid-sized wedding, this place is immaculate. It has a very storybook type feel to it with it's Portland type architecture, ponds, and classic landscaping. It's very picturesque. It's tucked away and you could drive right past it cause it just looks like a neighborhood house. The banquet room has very rich colors and has a very classy upscale feeling to it. The staff felt helpful to me. I can't really say because I wasn't involved in the planning, but they seemed nice and organized. I feel they did a great job in making my friend's wedding a memorable one. Parking may be a problem. We had booked Gray Gables estate, and everything was great up until Covid19. We're scheduled for 9/3/2020, and the Venue didn't even bother to contact us to reassure us or check in with us if we wanted to postpone or anything. I had to reach out to them to see what can be done. The Venue is not canceling or giving any refunds. They told me to wait six weeks before my wedding, which I can't do that as everyone is coming for another state and Country all 90 guests. During this pandemic, they are not even allowed to book any travel, so don't know how I'm going to have a Wedding that no one can come to. They wouldn't also let me postpone as an option. There was no act of God clause in the contract, so I still lose out. You would think they would want to work with their brides. I guess not. Don't book here; trust me on this. I've spoken with other local Venues, and they are letting their brides postpone some have even given them their deposits back. read more

I was married here last September and it was the most beautiful wedding venue I could have ever imagined! The grounds were gorgeous and my pictures turned out amazing. I really felt like Cinderella. The wedding planner was very helpful and made sure to pick up the slack where we needed it, very knowledgeable! Barb made my special day an incredible experience! The only disappointing thing was the food. The price for the venue is pretty high and includes food, unfortunately I was not impressed with it at all. Even when my officiant got a flat tire and couldn't make the wedding, Genevieve smoothed everything over for a completely stress free evening, not only for me, but for my mother and everyone else in the wedding party. They are a stickler for time tables, however, so if you aren't ok with being scrupulously on time, that is something to take into account. This venue was an absolute delight for my wedding. Samantha was super easy to work with and gave a lot of good suggestions for different wedding arrangements. The food was really good and they even heated up a vegan burrito for my mother-in law. We had to change our plans last minute due to weather and this venue has a lot of good options for both ceremony and reception areas. Got a lot of compliments on how pretty everything was. Also an original concern was that the traffic from McLoughlin would be too loud and we didn't even notice that we were next to a busy road. Inside you will find a spacious lobby for cocktail time and beautiful ballroom for the reception. The food is very good and the staff will take care of all your needs. okay the grounds.... holy unicorns on rainbows.... the grounds are beautiful and the house is amazing. My sister got married there. A couple of small things.... during the rehearsal the woman running the place interjected a few times too many on parts of my sisters ceremony that was really .....NONE OF HER BUISNESS. My sister has chosen to not have my father in her life so she wanted my uncle to walk her down the isle.... not her father.... and really my sister DID NOT want part of the ceremony to include the words "who gives this woman away" the woman running this did not like nor try to hide that fact..... other than that.... the rest of the experience was okay. until the wedding. The day of the wedding my sister had no complaints that I could tell.... I did. First off do not order the family around and be dismisive to us.... the same woman damn near got an earful from me when she dismissed me from a room in a way that was rather uncool. The wedding itself was wonderful and the staff very helpful when needed. It was raining up till right before the ceremony so we had to have it inside. The staff were like little worker bees setting everything up inside to accommodate every one that was there. One woman even helped my grandmother in and out of chairs it was great. The reception was also wonderful, the food good and the bride and groom wanted for nothing. Like I said earlier ..... they had no complaints and that made me the happiest sister in the world. Other than my little unlikes from above keep in mind... I was the sister of the bride so I was probably a little more critical than I should have been. I should have known when we did the tour and got a canned, rehearsed overview of the garden that Sam would not be the best in the business but we were so enamored by the gardens... Between not getting back to us or answering in short, uninformative emails, adding in services into the bill that I expressly said we didn't want and leaving some out that we said we did multiple times, confusing details of our wedding with someone else's, not being able to give us specific information about menu items... If you are type A and very organized you will be driven very crazy by having to recheck the details. If you are not on top of details, hire a wedding planner who is. Or go somewhere else. The day turned out to be wonderful, but that was not without A LOT of checking and back-checking on my end and a list I generated and passed out to everyone on the day to make sure all were on the same page. read more

This venue really is the most unique that I have seen in Portland - and I have quite literally never seen grounds this beautiful. The entire space is incredibly beautiful inside and out, and the entire experience of planning a holiday concert here was so easy and inspiring. I always got a quick response from Sam, one of the owners, and let me tell you, as a professional Event Designer, when I wound up getting there early and found the entire place set up immaculately - it was a huge stress relief. They also were incredibly accommodating when we wound up having way more guests than planned. Overall, we heard some thrilled reviews from guests and I walked out having a very successful event, and quite a bit of that is due to the amazing staff and space at Gray Gables. We got married here in Fall 2010 and it was a perfect wedding. I did not have to think at all during the ceremony and/or reception! (Which is good considering the state-of-mind a bride can be in!) The staff knows exactly what they're doing and the pictures turned out beautiful. The ceremony started at twilight and the whole property lit up in thousands of sparkling lights. We chose this place to get married because we thought it was beautiful, however I am even more pleased with the service. I don't think there is another place that would have set up decorations, help with guest questions, make sure the guest book is on an empty page, and help pack things into cars at the end of the night. We went with their food option because we didn't want to pay extra for an outside vendor and were very pleased. The food was perfect and our guests cant stop talking about how delicious it was. We also chose to have them provide the alcohol because it ended up being less expensive and they had many options to choose from. Their attention to detail was flawless. What an extraordinary Venue and Staff. My brother and I hosted a 50th anniversary party for our parents at the Gray Gables March 2016. Samantha and the rest of her staff were so incredibly flexible with our ideas, as well as offering helpful designs. The vendors that the Gray Gables has on hand are absolutely the best around. The food, the flowers, the music, and decorations were superb and our parents were blown away with happiness and gratitude. My husband and I choose Gray Gables Estate for our wedding venue last fall. The venue it's self if very beautiful and very private which was perfect for our special day and that's where the two stars are from. Jennifer worked with us the entire time of us planning the wedding and I can honestly say I was no pleased by her attitude. She came off as very condescending and snooty. They are highly strict with the vendors that come into the property. The property did come with a day of coordinator which at the time of booking the venue thought it was a great thing. In the end I still had to higher a day of coordinator else where to help make sure the wedding went smoothly. The venue charges you an extra $500.00 to bring an outside catering team into the venue if you don't choose there catering option which is very highly expensive and did not look appealing.My husband and I went beyond the wedding budget and hired an outside catering company. I thought Gray Gables would be a good package deal because they had 2 options for a food and day of coordinator which did not even work to our benefit. Jennifer was very rude to our outside coordinator when we all sat down and met before the wedding. At Gray Gables they have one event per day. So how come we couldn't come early to get ready we could only be there a certain amount of time, the only time we could come early was if we picked their choice of hair and make up company which was outrageously over priced. Thank god the day of the wedding went by smoothly thank you to our day of coordinator we picked. She dealt with Jennifer the day of the wedding which nice. My guest complained after the wedding day that their drinks during the wedding would disappear even if they didn't drink that much. We went over our wine bottle limit and we had to pay for more but no wonder why. Their wait staff would whisk away people's drinks when it was still full and then the guest would have to go to the bar to get another glass. Last thing, before the wedding day we settled the billed and paid for everything besides the additional wine bottles that we had to use. After the wedding Gray Gables tried to charge us $500.00 for the outside catering fee which had already been paid for before the ceremony. I never give bad reviews but if there was more review on this place maybe someone can have a better experience when dealing with a venue for their wedding! read more

I emailed them about information on their venue, packages, and catering services. They didn't get back to me for a really long time. Then when they do get back to me, it's very short and not very informative answers. I found it to be rude and such a shame because I was highly interested in making that my venue. The person I was taking to blamed me for why they didn't give much information. They said that they base things on packages and I didn't specify if I was just using them as a venue or if I wanted them to plan my whole wedding. Well if I'm asking questions about pricing and catering and ceremony, than that should be a sign that I'm planning on having much more done than just renting it for the venue. Initial impression: This place was beautiful, both my fiance and I thought it was perfect in all aspects. The grounds are astounding, and the reception hall is equal to the exterior in uniqueness and classy beauty. The menu looked amazing. The wedding coordinator lady was very friendly and helpful, and we were very close to booking a date. What actually happened: We spent about a week discussing options for the menu and other details with this venue before we decided to book a date. Then the shocker came: We were told that they would not like to do business with us because we "asked too many questions, causing a feeling of distrust." This was very perturbing, as the only questions we had were about playing with the menu to make it more specific to our needs, and several hidden fees that were unmentioned until the day we were going to book a date, including a $750 deposit for cleaning, and a $30ish fee for choosing a DJ outside of their "preferred" list. It seemed quite odd to us that questions regarding such a big day in ones life are unacceptable at this venue, and I have to say that that is a very bad and unfair business principle. This place leaves an amazing first impression, but apparently they are so overflowing with business that they are able to simply weed out the clients who are curious about exactly what they can eat and how much money they will be spending in total. I've had the pleasure of attending several events at Gray Gables and each time I'm totally blown away. Not only are the grounds beautiful and well maintained but each time I come back I see or notice something new. The staff are not only nice but they are incredibly helpful! The way they are able to transform a space is unbelievable, you want a garden wedding but it's raining? No problem. They have it handled by creating a whole garden inside. Absolutely stunning! The venue itself is easily accessible with public transportation and it's not far from Portland or Oregon City so either way you know you can get home safe after an event. read more

Not everything is as it seems. Do not trust the website graygables.com. This is a site that was created prior to the new ownership. All Kudos are about the previous owner (Barbara). The two women who would be helping you "plan" your wedding are named Samantha and Jennifer. They recently purchased the venue in mid 2014 which means things are in constant motion and vendors who were once preferred are no longer. What does wedding planning mean to them? It does not mean that they will take your budget and colors or theme and find vendors and create a magical day. It means that when you ask, they will quote some of the most expensive (albeit high quality) vendors and you will have to still call around and weed through the mess of wedding planning. I know the recommendations come from a place of wanting the best for their customers but they also need to keep in mind how every brides budget is different and perhaps first inquire about the budget and then recommend the vendors that are the best for their price range. What they need to say, if anything on their website (if they update it) is that they are DAY OF wedding COORDINATORS. Which is still pretty helpful. The grounds and gardens are VERY pretty. The outdoor area where you can hold your ceremony is beautiful. The manor house where you can hold an indoor ceremony and/or reception has gorgeous chandeliers. Their beauty is almost robbed though from the dated carpet and drapery. The new owners are working on redoing several things around the grounds but I feel like those should be top priority. There is so much potential in this place and I am sure that with time it will be improved upon. The "inclusive" option? Yes tables and chairs are provided. But the chairs are straight out of the 80's. Black and Gold. They will tell you that they have linens but they only offer black, I never inquired about the chair covers but I'd hope that they have a white option although unless you're going for a black and white look would look pretty strange. They do have plates and silverware. Anything, and I mean ANYTHING outside of this is extra. You want different chairs? That will cost you. On their website under the "Wedding Planning" tab you will see a quote that says "Do you want family and friends responsible for your wedding and reception?". Well guess whose job it is to set out favors and name tags (if that is something you so choose), your bridesmaids. Since when were my bridesmaids not my family or friends and suddenly responsible for how my wedding looks? I'd say, go take a tour, see if it fits your ideal wedding day, like I said, this is a very pretty venue. The outside is wonderful. read more

We had our wedding in July 2010 at Gray Gables. The staff was very helpful and professional throughout the planning process. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. We got so many compliments on how beautiful our wedding was, the grounds, the food, etc. The Gray Gables wedding planners did a wonderful job and made the wedding planning process stress free - and made for the perfect wedding day! read more

i was a guest at a friend's wedding and while the place is nice the owners/staff are not very friendly or helpful and cheap it seems . i cant believe they made my friend rent a outhouse which was place within site of the venues seating especially when the building with bathrooms was less than 30 feet from gathering. I also thought the owner/staff were rude and snob like. And i was told once your day here was done they harass and are not nice about getting paid. they should put as much effort into making the wedding better for all as they do being rude and unhelpful . All i can say is if it were me I'd pay more and give my bussiness to a place and owners that care about the bride ,groom and guest on this special day. read more

Although positive reviews have been made, look at the source. A wedding GUEST is easily impressed, as the facility is attractive. I went along with my 30-yr-old daughter's choice to have her wedding here, but have regrets, and here is why. She got talked into an expensive upgrade to include Barb the wedding planner, white aisle runner, parking attendant, bar tender, etc... but the nice fake flower arrangement on the buffet table was the best thing about the upgrade! The "planning" was so bad that the minister didn't even get a call about the time for rehersal, so he missed it! In fact, there had been no communication with him at all, during the months leading up to the wedding, which was in Aug. 2010. Nor was there any communication with the florist, who missed hearing about the change (addition) in the number of tables needing centerpieces. The seating at the head table was a fiasco, and could have been avoided by simply providing place cards. Instead, Barb took it upon herself to tell people when and where to sit, and didn't get around to everyone, so some of the groomsmen were excluded, which was very awkward for the people who had accidentally sat in their places. Contrary to contract, there was no white aisle runner, even though the bride had a long train which ended up sweeping the ground. No parking attendant...and what's worse, the Manor House got locked during the reception, even though we paid for exclusive use of that and the Reception Hall. Throughout the evening, people had to keep finding Barb to unlock the Manor House. Surprisingly, I was required to pay for an "estimated" amount of beer and wine, weeks in ADVANCE of the wedding. Plus 20% gratuity. Having done that, I objected to the presence of a large tip jar at the bar. When I asked the bartender about it, he said he did not know that any gratuities were paid in advance. He was not a new employee. Makes you wonder. In summary, I felt that Gray Gables staff was unprofessional and lacking in etiquette, and that we paid for many things that we did not get. When I tried to resolve issues with the owner, my concerns were brushed aside. Yes, the bride signed the contract, and was happy on her wedding day, but she is not confrontive.
