Okay this place was so good! It looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside but it is actually a decent sized place. Hours are 7am-2pm. They let the food speak for themselves. Most everything to drink is bottled except for coffee and free water. Everyone who works there is very knowledgeable about gluten allergies. I have a gluten and dairy allergy. I had a denver omelet without cheese. It is a shared kitchen but they specifically clean everything before making anything when someone tells them its a food allergy. If you call ahead they can make any of their baked goods gluten free. I did not because my family decided to try this on a whim but I was able to have gluten free toast, frosted sugar cookies, and a brown butter chocolate chip cookies. The toast was actually toasted and crunchy on the outside while soft in the middle. Will be eating here again. read more

Stumbled across this place while looking for breakfast. I have found my new favorite place in Ames. I'm amazed more people don't know it's here. I had a breakfast sandwich with ham, eggs, cheese and avocado on a savory biscuit. When I brought it back to work everyone was huddling around loving the glorious smell. It was amazing. I also came home with a scone the size of my head. It was wonderful!! I can't wait to try other flavors. We will be heading here again next week for our weekly management meeting as everyone is excited to try it for themselves. Casual environment and very good staff. This place has it all! read more

Yummy with a capital Y! Not only does this location have plenty of indoor/outdoor seating but the staff were beyond helpful. Oh and the food was great! The menu has so many options for breakfast and lunch. You can customize your sandwich (but why would you, the sandwich's are fully loaded) I got the spicy apple bacon sandwich on sourdough. Bread had the perfect crisp to it. Great quality you can taste. I will be back! read more

Not my first time at GHB&C, but my first review. This place hasn't been in Ames too long, but they really do a great job of serving their customers. Great Harvest is more than just a bakery that makes good bread - they have a nice menu of sandwiches, soups and salads, all are good from my experiences so far. I love their peppered blue roast beef. Nothing beats a good sandwich with fresh meat and great homeade bread! I also like their turkey chile cheddar melt. I had that last time I was here and it's a nice warm sandwich on a cold day. The feel is casual and totally laid back. They have music playing over the loud speakers, nothing too annoying as to wreck the ambiance. This is a great place to grab a quick bite, take a coffee break and enjoy one of their fresh-baked pastries or just come in and get a fresh loaf to take home. The service is fast and friendly. This is quickly turning into one of my favorite locations here in Ames. read more

Restaurant was practically empty when I went. They had free parking and free wi-fi but food wise, I am not a big fan. Super pricey food. It's great to know they make their products fresh, but the portions of food were too less compared to the price. Tried a sandwich and hot chocolate, both were okayish. read more

At first walking in, it looked nice and friendly. We were the only people in the shop as well as the 2 workers. Said hello and was hoping for a little customer service, or some feedback on what's available. Nothing. Asked for regular milk for our coffee, was told we can purchase it. Really. "Never heard of using milk in coffee ". I'll take the omelette and a biscuit. Crash, down goes the tray of biscuits. Thankfully the young woman behind the counter has a personality, the young gentleman should try working someplace that needs as little abilities as possible. Great surprise find. I was skeptical about a bakery for lunch, but what a great place! We were welcomed with a sample of the bread of the day- I tried the Asiago pesto, and it was amazing. My friend even bought a loaf for home. I had the Big Sky chicken salad and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. May be the best chicken salad I have ever had. Before we left, the owner was generously walking around and offering fresh made cinnamon roll samples. Again, great place for lunch. Breakfast menu as well and bakery items hit the sweet spot!! read more

GREAT TASTY FOOD; fast service; pleasant colors/atmosphere with plenty of room so you are not sitting right on top of each other. You get a lot on your sandwiches! FILLING meal! with a pickle too. KID'S MEALS have a smaller sandwich, choice of various chips or pretzels, pickle slice, and apple sauce. I had this! LOVED apple sauce with it. They have COMPLIMENTARY samples of their homemade daily breads; 4 were out; I had a sample of them all. TASTY! Help are all high school employees; great personalities, etc. Pleasant to work with. There is a SMALL private room for 8 or 10 using the ends of the tables. LARGE wall tv so you can see what is happening. Great Ames/Des Moines radio station music playing. I didn't check out the restroom to see if it IS handicapped accessible with grab bars by the toilets & how many toilets there are in the women's restroom. NEXT time I will ;) FREE PARKING on north side of the building. This is the old MATHISON FORD MOTOR Co. garage area. Lovely location, quiet and clean. It was a nice place to bring the kids and meet friends for lunch. The owner came by to say hi. The vegan sandwich was nice, could have been a little more flavorful, maybe add some red peppers or something. Excellent bread and desserts. The hummus veggie sandwich on Dakotah bread is a great vegan option. Also, the portabella salad with miso dressing is another option. There are gluten free bread and dessert options. The atmosphere is fairly quiet, no TVs! Plus, a meeting room. read more

I love this bakery. I go several times a week, mostly for lunch. My favorite sandwich is the spicy apple bacon grilled cheese on Dakota bread. If you are looking for something sweet, the cinnamon rolls are huge and taste great. I sampled the bread pudding today and really enjoyed it. The breads taste wonderful and are baked fresh daily from wheat they grind daily. I have tried 6 different breads and enjoyed each of them. I had forgotten what real bread tasted like. The kids working there seem to love their job as they are very friendly and polite. read more

Awesome family atmosphere right when you walk in! I was greeted at the door by the owner and was offered a menu and suggested items to look at. He offered my co-worker and I several sample options of his breads. The owners truly care about their customers and foods they are serving. Everything was amazing here!! read more

My daughter and I are both celiac so we we're excited to see they offered a gluten free bread. We were at the farmers market and wasn't sure what was "safe" so I thought this would be the better option. It says on their menu that they keep their gluten bread frozen. Okay, fine. We ordered a grilled cheese with gluten free bread and they said it would take a little longer because it is frozen. I agreed. A few minutes later they say it isn't sliced and really frozen so would like to offer something else besides grilled cheese. What else can they offer that's gluten free? A salad. My daughter is not interested. So we asked for the fruit bowel. They say yeah, take one. She was super nice and apologetic, but it's frustrating they would put gluten free bread in their menu, but not have it ready to be served and say we can't have it. On top of that, the sandwich was $5.80 and the fruit bowel was $3. We weren't offered the price difference or refund of any kind. Only given three stars because my husband said they were nice about it at least. read more
