I'd recommend getting a sampler if it's your first time, to try a few different things, especially their fruited and sour beers, which are a lot of fun. I came here with a friend on a Monday, it was relatively quiet but not dead. The woman that was at the bar was very open to giving my friend recommendations when he asked (she was wearing a sweet Harry Potter sweater, a huge plus for me and my friend). We sat at the bar and really enjoyed the ambiance, the music was very 2006/2007 which was a great throwback for us. After an hour or so we noticed some people playing video games on one of the TVs. They actually invited us to play and we had a blast. We will definitely be coming back here. I've been to the Great Notion in Portland and this taproom was 10x better. Oh and the beer was great, we're big fans of Fieldwork and Original Pattern and felt this was on par with those two breweries. read more

Met up with friends early Friday afternoon on St Patrick's day and grabbed outdoor seating which is a small area with 3 small tables. Tried the ripe and cloud pusher ipas first which looked great and were enjoyable but loved the blueberry sour most. At the time they didn't have a way to print receipts and only email or text it. read more

Back in the day, this was the Sierra Nevada taproom. Great Notion inherited it, in a manner of speaking. Yes, generally I am a beer snob. I have my favorites. Beer from Portland, invading CA as it were, who needs it? But it isn't all bad here. Read on. BeerAdvocate scores tend to be more conservative, and they serve some here which are highly rated on BeerAdvocate. Check it out for yourself. Even if you prefer various offerings from a brewery located in a county north of here along some Russian River, like myself, there is some interesting and decent beer served here. Whenever I am in the neighborhood I stop by for a pint or two. This place is like a siren song, I am like a moth drawn to the flame. Part of that is the sours here. They give that Sonoma County brewery a run for their money when it comes to sours. But be bold, try the various IPAs. If you are hungry after you get your drink on, head down Fourth, there is a deservedly-famous Indian restaurant just south of here. You can get your snack on there. Incredible beer at a convenient location on 4th street in North Berkeley. They took over the old Sierra Nevada Torpedo Room and did a nice job. Was always hoping they'd make it down to the Bay from Oregon. The most underrated part is their can art, which is as good as I've seen from any brewery (I'm a nerd, I know). Hopefully they offer food someday but the food trucks fill the gap reasonably well. Another benefit is you can easily brewery hop to other nearby places like Cellarmaker Berkeley, Trumer, and Gillman. read more

Very few seating options. Very few options on tap. The tap menu was not displayed anywhere, though they did have it on a handout. The door makes an annoying sound every time someone walks in. Maybe those are issues related to being newly opened. We tried two beers. They were both ok. We won't be back because there are places nearby that have much better beer. read more

This is one of the best spots in Berkeley! With an amazing staff, who are so kind and joyful, a great rotating selection of beers, and usually a great food truck, you can't go wrong! While I'm not the biggest sour fan (and there's a lot of sours on the menu), there's always multiple beers I like. There's truly something for everyone. The staff and the vibes make you want to come back time and time again. Finally, Mel's trivia is truly the best in the Bay. It's fun, challenging, unique, and overall literally the best time. The tap selection here is not as good as their Portland location, but it's still nice. Then again, the space is a lot smaller. I can imagine that it runs out of seating quickly on weekends. Canned takeaway selection was also not that comprehensive. Service can use a lot of work, at least on the holiday evening when I visited. The bartender on the left side of the bar (earrings & nose piercings, dog tattoo on the arm) explained to me, after some waiting, the two beers that tasters aren't allowed for. After that, she completely ignored me for two patrons on the middle-left side of the bar. Even after she gave me the introduction, she didn't respond at all when I tried making eye contact to put an initial order in. I had to place my orders with the bartender on the right (glasses) - she was cool. A little uncomfortable that the staff were watching me input a tip for a separate order grabbing a 4-pack out of the fridge. No one cleaned up the glassware left on the patio tables outside during my 90-minute stay here. They did allow outside food (on a night when there was no food truck outside), which was nice. Just noticed that not only are you charging me $25 for shipping on beer that was never attempted to be delivered by UPS, but you are also charging me a restocking fee !!!!!? What is wrong with you? This is literally the worst I have ever been treated by a company, ever! The right thing to do would have been to resend the (3) 4 packs I ordered and opened up a claim with UPS. I waited around 2 whole days to sign for these with nobody attempting to deliver. You should have as a company resent them. Instead you charged me for shipping and restocking (3) 4 packs. As someone who has literally no extra money and just wanted to enjoy some beer I can say you are the biggest disappointment in all my years as an avid supporter. Someone who paid much more from 3rd parties reselling that were more reliable than you now that you ship in CA. What a monumental garbage company you are. read more

Beertenders are super knowledgeable and friendly. They've almost always have a food truck or some pop up planned. The taco truck is pretty good, even by my SoCal standards. The vibe is pretty chill, the weekends obviously are busier and you might have trouble getting a seat. read more

Great atmosphere. I loved seeing the dubs on the tv. I don't drink so it was great having non alcoholic options and the sliders were great. My partner loved the pilsners.
