Wow! I brought my three pups into Great Plains SPCA's Veterinary Care Center for their annual vaccinations and checkups after seeing their March deal for prevention packs. I'm always nervous to bring my youngest pup to a new vet because he is VERY afraid of the vet and will often nip or bite out of fear. This was the first vet visit he's ever been on where he didn't have to be muzzled and even wagged his tail a few times throughout the process. The vet tech, Brittany, was so attentive with him and immediately go on the floor on his level when I told her he was fearful. The vet, Dr. Little, was equally caring and attentive. They were super awesome and the prices were SO reasonable. I highly recommend this place for affordable, quality care! read more

I absolutely love my cat that I adopted, but him being deaf seemed to be an issue with the people who worked there. I fell in love with his beautiful white fur and his amazing green eyes. I didn't mind that he was deaf, but l they kept saying is "you know he is deaf right?" It absolutely sunk my heart, and made me feel all the much better for taking him out of a place that couldn't understand him. read more

too bad you have to talk to the humans who work here before getting to the animals. very rude, abrupt, and overall unpleasant experience. I left feeling extremely upset and was unable to see any animals at all. I sincerely hope there is another animal shelter nearby. read more

I love this shelter and the vet side. Their prices can't be beat on flea medication as well. We recently adopted out cat here. The staff are friendly. I like supporting this place. I donate blankets and litter and money when I can. It's very clean, I don't know why anyone would buy from a breeder when all these kids need homes. We've been to the Vet about 5 times now and I can say honestly they are amazing. The prices are so reasonable and everyone who has helped us has been amazing. I have brought in all 3 of my cats from checkups to a semi emergency situation and the staff has been wonderful every time. They are compassionate and helpful. They go out of their way to make sure you are understanding the situation and plan of action. I've always gotten into appointments quickly and almost immediately for the semi emergency. I took my german shorthair pointer in the this clinic to have him neutered. I will admit they were very nice, professional, and helpful. When i went and picked my dog up everything seemed fine, i thought he was just really swollen. A week later i had to take him to my vet because he was bleeding all over my house, and my vet had to put staples in the insicion. then1 1/2 months later he stil has one testical left. I call and ask them why this would be (after i take him to my vet, and three vets examine it) and the vet at no more homeless pets kc said this is just impossible. There is no possible way that there is a testical left. I am very disappointed that i spent money to get my dog neutered and had all of this happen. I would never recommend anyone to go here and have there dog or cat neutered or spayed! read more

A letter doesn't express it well enough! I simply can not get my sincerest message across in words alone. Britton Hunter, with Friends of KC Animals sent me there, to have a eye removed from a foster dog I just took in. They paid for her medical bills and meds. She had been in pain for the last 1 1/2 years, because her previous owner just became homeless. His treatment for her was to give a baby aspirin once a day! Great Plains did the surgery, and now Juno the blind Akita, is out of pain. It is with my sincerest thanks that I write this note. Juno has been accepted into Bluemoonakitarescue in CO. Not sure when she will be privately transported, but I am fostering until that time. Thank you again, Great Plains, and especially to the staff and Dr. Eddy for all the compassion and skill they showed Juno. I am not sure if there is a lack of care at the Merriam shelter now. But you guys were the first place I thought of when I found this small black female cat who ate like she didn't eat in a couple days. I was told that you guys were full, I understand that. I also understand that there are rules and protocols to follow, but when I asked for help on what to do or if anyone knew someone willing to help with this under a year old stray... I was told to keep her or "put it back outside where I found it". The person at intake did not check to see if she was spayed or even checked to see if she was a SHE. And putting an unspayed cat back outside? Yeah contribute to more strays? That's a great idea. Also, this cat had an respiratory infection and intake said she looked "okay". She was clearly not an outside cat the way she ate and the fact she had no microchip or collar. My vet verified that. I called other rescues and shelters and they too told me they were at capacity with cats. But I asked each place if they advise that I just "put it back outside where I found it" and every single one of them told me NO. I was even told by one rescue that was a heartless thing for any shelter to advise. Since this cat is clearly not feral and with a feral community why would I dump it back outside? So that's okay I went ahead and payed for a vet visit and treatment for fleas, parasites and the infection, got updated shots and checked for diseases too. I work 2 jobs and have pets and rescues of my own to care for, but I'll pull money out of my savings to care for the little life you clearly did not care to help. I will remain in contact with the shelters and rescues who don't just want to "dump animals back outside" and actually cared to give me advise, put me on a waiting list or at least reach out to fosters. Clearly she will find a better home and have better care with me, as I am not pretending to just care for her like it's my job. I care for her because I actually care for animals. This post was deleted when I shared it with staff and volunteers, who also told me that other shelters and rescues were basically telling me not to put the cat back out, just because GPSPCA told me the opposite. So they are saying that other places lied to me? They clearly didn't like hearing that other rescues thought they gave bad advice. I'm not the only one who apparently has seen lack of care or lack of prevention for strays. Read around and find similar complaints from pet parents, staff AND volunteers. read more

I brought my dog into Great Plains to get neutered . Our other dog was pregnant and we wanted to do the right thing and get him neutered . A few days after I brought him home from GREAT PLAINS he has "KENNEL COUGH!" Our dogs are totally secluded from any other animals at home. So it's pretty obvious where he got KENNEL COUGH. Now our female just had 8 puppies and she has KENNEL COUGH. I'm worried about the Puppies now. So basically I brought my healthy German Shepherd to Great Plains and now I have 2 sick German Shepherds and hopefully the puppies don't get sick and die. After leaving several messages , I was finally told that it would cost me at least $360 for them to fix my dogs. ( that we're totally healthy before I went to GREAT PLAINS ) The manager at Great Plains told me that it' was 50% my fault that my dogs got sick and I would have to pay 50% of the bill for getting my dogs treated SERIOUSLY! I refused to bring my dogs back to them. God knows what they might bring home with them next time. PS. If they would have told me that my dog could GET SICK while at GREAT PLAINS or even advised us to get a Kennel Cough vaccine , before we brought him in to get neutered , we would have done that and All of this could have been avoided. I'm So disapoionted in there attitude and that the MANAGER refused to accept 100% responsibility for what they did to my dogs. . Not to mention what might happen to the new born puppies. So much for them really caring about the dogs . I guess it's all about the Money $$$$ I sure hope your animals don't get SICK AT GREAT PLAINS. . read more

I did a recent visit with a family member to look a couple dogs to adopt. Both dogs were great and we were honest about having other dogs around from time to time that friends had. We decided to adopt one of the dogs and we were told that we had to bring in the other dogs to meet. These dogs are not owned by myself and they are not in our household except when friends visit. I feel I have been discriminated against and making up this ridiculous need for the other dogs to meet. This should not dictate what happens in my house. This was uncalled for and I understand the need to ensure dogs have a good fit. But to deny a person an adoption based on other peoples dogs that don't live in the same house is wrong. This was uncalled for and if this is how a place like this is ran they need to be shut down and give the donations to a facility that wants to adopt out their animals to good home. We were so excited to adopt we went out that night a bought all the toys, collar, leash, and food for the dog...Shame on you Great Plains SPCA you caused a great dog to lose out on a great family!!!! read more

My husband went to the SPCA in Merriam, KS last Wednesday to pick a dog to adopt n they said the one he liked wasn't ready for adoption because they had not done an evaluation yet. I called to inquire about the puppy the next morning n they said because we don't already have a dog they won't allow us to buy him. They want to sell him to people with a dog because the puppy is under socialized n another dog could teach the puppy to behave like a dog... Apparently a 6 month old puppy will NEVER learn how to be a dog on its own along with us training him. I wonder what Darwin would've said about that... Sounds like an excuse, maybe one of them or someone they know wants the puppy. We do not have children in our home, we have one cat, I am home full time, the puppy would have tons of attention, training n love. I can see how he would not learn in an environment like that. We're both dumbfounded, disappointed n angry. My husband went to Prairie Paws in Ottawa on Thursday and came home that evening with a dog. They were friendly n helpful unlike the folks at the SPCA. :( Mayhap there is such overcrowding in shelters because of things like this. Pray for all animals denied a good loving home. read more

I took my dog to the Antioch office for neuter. I then get a phone call from Dr. Eddy around 2 pm telling me that he thinks my dog has a mast cell tumor on his scrotum. He continued to tell me that he did a needle aspiration and in his opinion, it looked suspicious. I was taken aback, not expecting to hear such news, and I asked him why he did not call me during the surgery and I would have given the go ahead to remove the mass and have it sent off for testing. He said that would have cost me much more money and he did not have time. WTH. You have the dog under, and what would five minutes do to their schedule? I have since followed up with a REAL vet, and two of the vets looked and could not find what Dr. Eddy was talking about. So, my five year old dog may or may not have a malignancy but because he was too busy, I now have to worry. This is not the first time Dr. Eddy has failed in his duties as a vet. When he was in private practice, he did not set a dogs broken leg correctly and the "seasoned" vets had to re-break the leg to set it right. If you use GPSPCA, ask that Dr. Eddy NOT work on your beloved pet. read more

I have mixed feeling about this shelter. We adopted a pair-bonded Jack Russells through this shelter over a year ago. They were 7-years old at the time. While I do believe they take good care of their animals and have good intentions, they were not honest about the dogs' behavioral issues. When I filled out the adoption paperwork, I specifically stated I would not tolerate destructive dogs. I had that problem with my Rat Terrier for about five years, and it was a total nightmare. This seems to be a problem with the working class of canines. Furniture and clothing were always biting the dust. But the shelter assured me that the dogs were not destructive. When I asked why they were turned over to the shelter, they stated the original owner died, then the second owner brought them back due to moving and the inability to take them with them, then another woman adopted them and turned them in due to the pair getting out of her yard too often. I really loved them, so I talked them into allowing me to foster them for the weekend before making a decision. They were good for the weekend, so I adopted them. When I received the adoption paperwork, they inadvertently left in the last owner's name, phone number, and address. So I called her when I arrived home to get background information on them, just in case there were medical issues. She told me she had given them up for repeatedly digging out of the backyard and tearing up her sofa. She also stated that one of them had major anxiety issues related to thunder storms and loud noises like fireworks. All of this was divulged to the shelter according to the owner. Then, as I looked further, I found that the second home was a foster parent rather than a moving issue; the foster parent had them for close to six months. I wasn't able to find out anything about the original owner, but I hope this story was accurate. We didn't turn the dogs back in because we grew too attached to them too quickly. So we just make sure to kennel them when we are gone to avoid the house being chewed to the ground. My main problem is we could have had some serious furniture problems if I had not found out about their behavioral issues. But now that we have their behavior under control (took about 7 months), they are two of the best dogs we have ever owner. Very affectionate and loving. I will say that when I addressed the problems with the director that she was very responsive and apologetic. She said she would refund our money and that we could keep the dogs or we could turn them over. So they get four stars because of her. read more

Found them on the web as one of four low cost vets located on a pop up map. They may offer excellent services but they are not low cost. They wanted $600 to $900 for a simple surgical procedure my local vet had quoted at $500. I let the doctor know from the start I couldn't afford a lot of money and just wanted the most humane outcome for my cat and was willing to accept the risk of not treating it like a human. read more

The short wait was a breeze. Vet tech was kind, and engaged. Vet was outstanding, offering me different options, without pushing in one direction. Understood my financial struggles, and gave some sound advice. I left with medication and the visit/exam costing me less than it does to simply walk into my old vet to be looked at. i am totally impressed with the efforts made by this organization although i must say the vet clinic in this area is deplorable... currently retired and feeling it might be more affordable i took my dog there 2 months ago... either my dog gained 13 lbs in 11 days or they had inaccurate stats... i purchased heartworm and flea medication... calling this week i was informed it didn't make any difference how much my dog weighed as it was in range and therefore the medication would have been correct... "sorry " we gave you only heartworm not flea medication... you need a different med but are not entitled to a special we are running because we gave you the wrong meds the first time... i left a message and sent email to the director... NO RESPONSE.... this is the first negative review I have ever written regarding anyone or anything but I urge all of you to think twice before donating anything to this chapter.... there are lots of organizations helping animals where excellence is stressed... please find one... read more
