This stop was an unplanned visit as we were driving down 81. It is a beautiful venue. There is not a lot of parking spaces and some folks were parking on the road as you drive up to the beer room. There are a few indoor seats, a covered patio with seating, and then outdoor seating with umbrellas at the tables. There was a duet playing live music on the day we were there and they were pretty good. The beer was ok- I had a pilsner. My wife got a blend of white wine, which she really enjoyed. They had a beer truck on site the day we were there. This spot is also dog friendly. Pro tip for this place if you want to stay for a sunset- bring your own chairs and you can sit up on the ridge facing the sunset. Several groups brought their own food and were sitting out on the ridge. We will definitely go back later in the day for a sunset. read more

Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery - located just south of Lexington - is one of the best-named wineries in the state. The Shenandoah really is one of my favorite areas in Virginia, and this place gives you some amazing views. I visited towards the end of the evening, not sure what to expect. Turns out the outdoor area was busy! Fortunately they had lots of space so I was still able to grab my own table. It's also part of a growing trend of hybrid brewery-wineries, so it can cater to both audiences. I had the feeling that beer was the primary beverage here, so presumably their wine would get short shrift. Boy was I wrong! When I asked who makes the wine, the owner replied back that he was in fact the winemaker, and not only that he has 5.5 acres of grapes under vine. When wineries invest in estate fruit, you know they're taking winemaking seriously. In addition to their own fruit they also locally purchase a Cornel University-created hybrid called Noriet that's rarely seen elsewhere. Noriet is a low tannin, hardy grape that's well suited for colder areas. While the Shenandoah AVA is a great place for vines, the elevation certainly calls for vines that are resistant against the cold. I sat down with both a flight of wine and beer to enjoy the scenery. I especially enjoyed the Grüner Veltliner and the Cab Franc/Noriet red blend. For beer, my flight included a nice coffee porter. read more

Beautiful views at this farm brewery. Nice relaxing experience. All the beers were decent. I thought the IPA was the star. Hazy with solid citrus and pine notes but not too powerful in hops or ABV. The coffee stout was also excellent. Pronounced coffee flavors but not so extreme that didn't still taste like a beer. Service was good. If you are in the area I would recommend checking this brewery out. read more

Hands down both mine and my husband's favorite brewery in the mountains. We've traveled up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway stopping at all the breweries along the way, and we keep coming back to Great Valley Farm. The views are breathtaking. Way off in the distance you can see the safari park. The beers are unbeatable! Everything we've ever tasted has been good. Whoever is crafting these brews clearly knows what they're doing. Our favorite Virginia beers are from Great Valley Farm Brewery. I wish we could get them in stores back home in Hamptons Roads, but then again, it's part of the charm that keeps us coming back. read more

Love it here! Not a lot of seating so I would recommend bringing a blanket to sit. Very dog friendly. Good view for a sunset. My hubby and I, along with our 2 small pups, visited in early May while staying at nearby Fox Hill B&B. There was a fairly large gathering on the patio when we arrived (family reunion of some sort, I think), but we snagged a few seats under the patio and overlooking the mountains - it was a beautiful day, which made the view that much prettier! We tried 2-3 beers each and enjoyed them all; my favorite was the hibiscus, which we ended up buying as a 6 pack. We appreciated the dog friendly vibe (one of the main selling points when traveling with our pups, of course), and that you could bring in your own food to snack on while trying out the yummy local beers. We plan to return to Fox Hill later this year or early next, and this brewery will definitely be on the itinerary again! read more

We stopped here because of the previous reviews. Loved it. We aren't really beer drinkers but my husband had a blonde and liked it. I had a glass of white wine. There was a food truck that served brats. We enjoyed them as well. The service and atmosphere was great. The view is spectacular with a vineyard just below on the hill. Opened October 22, 2016, GVFB makes a promising start in a county dominated by Devil's Backbone. As expected with their rural location in the Shenandoah Valley, the surrounding mountains are on full display and is certainly part of the reason this place will be most popular when the weather is nice. Seating for approximately 30 people inside with a handful of tables on their outdoor patio. Five taps that have a focus on Belgian styles, including a nice saison lighter bodied Belgian style stout. nothing too esoteric, this is a place that will appeal to the masses. Easy access off I-81, it is right by the Pink Cadillac Diner and consider visiting Virginia Gold Orchard for some delicious Asian pears, when in season. You can bring your own food or a picnic and they had a pop up taco stand for their grand opening. A relaxing environment, good beer and stunning views. A promising start! The brewery is up a bit along a country road off 11, and the views are incredible. There's lots of outdoor seating, either tables with umbrellas or under a shaded patio. There were no food trucks when we came, though apparently they have them often, so we brought sandwiches. Outside food is welcome. The beer is not the best we've had but it's solid, and they have some less common/unusual offerings such as lemongrass pale ale and coffee stout. We didn't try the wine but if we come back I would give it a try. Small facility but very clean. Quick and friendly service. read more
