Returned once again, we were craving something fresh and hot; we decided to do take out and went with dinner for 2! "chicken broccoli and kung bao chicken", it comes with chicken fried rice (the portion was small); also came with appetizers; egg rolls/crab Rangoon's. I bought soup on the side. And we honestly thought there would be leftovers for the next day but jokes on us. We ate all of it in one sitting and had none left because it was all absolutely amazing. I guess we were hungrier than we thought My only critique would be about the rice because it was dinner for 2, maybe don't be too stingy on that. Besides that everything else was great! The service was great with the staff being extra kind and friendly. The food was served very fast and the atmosphere was good. Price was comparable to other restaurants we have been to. Had the sesame chicken and it was absolutely amazing. I would come back to try this dish again. Feel tempted to come back so I can try other dishes. Would recommend if you are in the area. read more

I won't be eating from this place anymore. They took almost an hour and a half to deliver my food because the driver was at the Casino and got, "DISTRACTED" (his words, not mine). Food arrived cold and when I asked for a refund an argument broke out and the young girl with a heavy accent called me a "Stupid B**ch" and told me Chinese food is supposed to be microwaved and that I'm not getting a refund. HORRIBLE! Dumplings were raw. Waitress said because they were fried. Looked like goo on the plate. Told her when she dropped off I was not going to eat. She charged for them, told her at register I would leave a tip if she removed them. She chose to charge and lost her tip. read more

If you're ever passing through Maquoketa and you have a hankering for some good Chinese food, definitely fight the natural urge to get the hell out of this lousy town and stop for a bite at The Great Wall. I've tried a number of Chinese places and I honestly have yet to find one whose food is consistently as good as this place. I'm also fairly convinced they have the best sesame chicken in the world. It's run by a Chinese family whose lives are dedicated to serving you delicious, mouth watering Chinese food. Seriously, you will find them there, seven days a week (except for this one period of time where they decided to be closed on Mondays, but they've since then re-opened on Mondays, probably because they were feeling like slackers), listening to the same CD of Chinese music, serving up awesome Chinese food. Truly upstanding people Americans should look up to. They have a buffet which is generally quite good, though the egg rolls in the buffet suck compared to what you get when you order them. They only have dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday nights, but are open other nights as well. Prices are quite cheap. You can get a lunch buffet and soda for under $10. My only complaint is you can't pay with a card, but they take checks (local only, which may be the reason why I never ordered new checks when I moved away from Maquoketa) and there's a US Bank ATM just a few doors down. The food is excellent they have a buffet with authentic Chinese food and good coffee cake .. The service is severely lacking , the mother and father are nice but the son lacks social skills and is pretty rude .. The business would do much better if he wasn't there .. Loved going to Great Wall when i lived in andrew. It was probably the best chinese food i've had. If you want to spend the minimum, go for the buffet, its pretty good, but if you want the best dish, spend two bucks more and order from the menu. I used to order the large pork lo mein, it was enough for 1 really wide guy (that'd be me) or 2 normal people, it was $9. read more

All my reviews so far have been for restaurants I've eaten at after a mountain bike ride and I'm not sure why. This probably won't continue since its really not an accurate gauge of a place since if you've ever gone on a 2+ hour mountain bike ride pretty much anything with calories in it will taste like the best thing you've ever had. That is until I found Great Wall Chinese Restaurant that is. My friend and I unfortunately passed DeWitt, IA on our way home which would have had lots of options which basically left Maquoketa as our only choice between there and Dubuque where we were driving to. During the drive I spotted Great Wall on Yelp and based on the 2 5-star ratings figured it would be worth a shot and especially on a Sunday night when not much else was open. I pretty much expected your typical Americanized Chinese food (over sweetened/over fried) but I had just burned a ton of calories biking so really didn't factor into my ordering. Perhaps the owners that another reviewer claimed "dedicate their lives to serving you delicious, mouth watering Chinese food" are no longer there because the hostess had the personality of a honey badger with a thorn stuck in its paw. On top of the cold reception we received she completely disappeared when it was time to pick up our check so we had to wait around an extra 10 minutes until finally I went to the back and found someone else to ring us up. As far as the food goes the Crab Rangoon lacked even a remote attempt at including Crab but were decent. Hot and Sour soup...so so. Pork Low Mein was dripping in so much oil I didn't taste much of anything but like I said before I was really hungry so I still ate most of it. The overpowering oil really did this dish in but it was also pathetic how little vegetables were included. 2 or 3 small slivers of carrot and a green onion slice or two. They might as well not even bother with them if you aren't going to you use more than that. Either way you wouldn't taste anything because once again too much oil (sorry for belaboring the point but I can still slightly taste it 4 hours later!) The really frustrating thing about Great Wall is that they are serving low quality food with poor service and setting their prices at least 30% too high. You do get a decent quantity of food but my total bill for Rangoon, Hot and Sour, Low Mein, and can of soda ($2.50!!!) was around $20 without tip. This restaurant is pretty pricey for what you get, and nobody is always going to have a great experience each visit. We know this. Something I would like to say is that they are a little understaffed. The woman who works there deserves a medal because she has to often take orders, run orders, serve and bus tables and she does this by herself a lot. My thing is that last time we ordered the buffet, food would run out and you would have to wait a long time to get a refill on your favorite item. My ribs hurt the last visit for some reason like I'd been kicked there. I've never had any issues with the food there other than that. My review is mixed. It's good but expensive, and the buffet is not the best. Otherwise I prefer it over the other Chinese place here. read more

For me I felt this was an ordinary Chinese restaurant. The food isn't bad. I got filled up. Yet I didn't get overly excited at what I saw at the buffet. The place is kept clean. And it's a quiet relaxing atmosphere. It was a little chilly in there. I feel the prices are on the high side. Which is the biggest negative for this restaurant. read more

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant, locally. Although we have never eaten in at the restaurant, we have ordered large amounts of takeout more than 10 times. The packaging is great and retains heat much better than other foam type takeout packaging. Portion size is large and filling. We usually order Mongolian beef, broccoli beef and chicken and/or beef with veggies. All really awesome. The Shrimp fried rice is always great too. You get plain rice with your entree ( which is fine) but we prefer eating Shrimp fried rice as our side. We also recommend the crispy fried Shrimp and egg rolls as appetizers. I have one Con that is they can sometimes be a little heavy handed with the sesame oil, hence the rating of 4 rather than 5.. Overall your best bet for Chinese food in our area. read more

There was only one person dining when we arrived and it was difficult for the woman to find a clean table to seat us at. We went specifically for the Saturday evening buffet which turned out to be a HUGE mistake! The food was room temperature at best, couldn't even eat the lo mein because it was so cold and had sat out so long it was like rubber! When brought to the employee's attention she didn't care. She continued with her phone call for the duration of our visit and never did clean any tables. For this disgusting experience we got the pleasure of paying nearly$27. It's hard to get high quality exotic food in rural Iowa. I feel that if you're near Maquoketa, Great Wall is definitely worth the drive. I usually order a random entree off the menu then get soup or fried dumplings on the side. I can honestly say everything I've gotten has been delicious. If you're looking for a high quality affordable meal Great Wall is your best bet. (I hadn't finished this apparently; it's from ages ago. I really miss this place) read more
