This is a quaint place to go for a decent meal and relax for a bit. As we were in Bellevue, IA it was recommended we visit this place for lunch. It looks like a gas station but they have food and some general shopping supplies. There was a bar side with tables and a separate room for just dining. The place was clean and felt like home. Service was very good even when a large crowd of snowmobilers showed up to do their yearly fund raising. It was loud but we understood this was not a normal Saturday lunch crowd. The mushroom burger was good, I would have it again. The fries were nothing special but still good. Our friends raved about the roasted chicken, a must try next time. There is not much else in this town, even cell service may be an issue but if you are passing through it is worth the visit.

A quite nice omnibus of St Donatus, Iowa, this multivalent establishment possesses a really solid (and really inexpensive) draught list [Old Style, Leinenkugel Honey Weiss], full bar, and even boasts a full dinner menu (with a very continental buffet, along with a salad-bar, situated in the back dining-room). Also a one-pump petroleum station and purveyor of sundries, this Highway 52 stop in Iowa's Little Luxembourg is perched across the street from the historic Gehlen House Inn and its adjoining barn (the Gehlen Barn), which - having been constructed in 1839 - is the oldest barn in Iowa. The beer from the draught - while nothing extremely special - was refreshing (and refreshingly priced), and well-paired moreover with the food-menu's offerings: the fried cheddar curds weren't transcendent, but certainly super-par; the fried Chicken livers - littered with grilled onions - were, however, superb; and the excellent buttered noodles, which appeared to have been quickly blanched and then fried al dente, formed a superior side. From the quick sampling I enjoyed, the housemade-sausage sandwiches were likewise quite good. If you're on road to or from Dubuque - or simply on that stretch of the Mississippi - this is quite the hidden gem to patronize.

The Supper Club Standard: A Night of Steaks and Levity at Jones' Black Angus…read moreOn the sprawling Highway 18 in Prairie du Chien, Jones' Black Angus stands as a stalwart of the Wisconsin supper club tradition--a place where the atmosphere is as thick as the cuts of beef and the hospitality feels like an invitation into a neighbor's dining room. The experience is anchored by a service staff that possesses that rare blend of professional precision and genuine personality. Our waitress, Grace, was the heartbeat of the evening. She navigated the floor with a warmth that felt entirely unscripted, providing a level of care that culminated in a particularly touching gesture: when one member of our party stepped away during the presentation of the dessert tray, Grace made a point of returning later to ensure he received the full, choreographed "view" of the nightly sweets. The culinary journey begins at the salad bar, which is--to put it simply--impeccable. In an era where many establishments have retired this particular ritual, Jones' maintains it with a freshness and variety that honors the tradition. However, the evening's primary entertainment came in the form of a recurring linguistic gag. When the soup of the day arrived--a dish that was, by all sensory accounts, a classic gumbo--Grace insisted with a wink that it was "jambalaya." The ensuing debate became the running joke of the night, a bit of shared levity that only a truly great server can cultivate. But the kitchen is not just about the sides and the stories. The filet was impeccable--perfectly seasoned, expertly seared, and possessing that melt-in-the-mouth quality that justifies the Black Angus name. My sincere compliments to the chef for a masterclass in steakhouse fundamentals. "A great steakhouse is about more than just the meat; it's about the memory of the meal." -- Unknown Jones' Black Angus is a reminder of why the supper club remains a beloved institution. Between the "jambalaya" jests, the meticulously curated salad bar, and a filet that commands respect, it is a destination that delivers both a full heart and a full plate. We were able to snag a last-minute reservation on OpenTable, and the entire experience was wonderful. Our waitress was incredibly attentive--our water glasses were refilled frequently, and even when the restaurant got busy, she made sure to check on us. We were seated in a cozy, intimate circular booth on the side, which made the evening feel even more special. What I'd Order Again: Alaskan King Crab Legs - Pro tip: Order these as a side to another dish instead of as an entrée--it's much cheaper that way! The crab was incredibly fresh, thanks to their flash-freezing process, and it really hit the spot. Lobster Bisque - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I added this last-minute when our waitress mentioned that people travel just to try it, and it did not disappoint. The freshly cracked pepper, along with the truffle accents, made this so flavorful and rich. Cocktails - The drinks were fantastic! I had the Tweed Jacket cocktail and really enjoyed it. What made it even cooler was that our waitress actually created a cocktail that got added to the menu when she started working there--so cool! Scallops - Perfectly cooked with a stunning presentation. While I've had better on the coasts, I was impressed given that we're in Iowa. Desserts (HIGHLY recommend the homemade coffee ice cream & tiramisu!) - The tiramisu was amazing, and I could tell it was homemade because I nearly choked on the cocoa powder (the ultimate test!). But the real star? The homemade coffee ice cream--absolutely phenomenal. What I Wouldn't Order Again: Jumbo Crab Cake - It was good, but it had that slightly "old crab" taste and reminded me more of snow crab than the rich, sweet crab flavor I was hoping for. Given that I'm from Seattle, my seafood standards are high, so this didn't quite meet expectations. Brussels Sprouts - Great flavor, but I prefer mine extra crispy, and these weren't quite there. 10 oz Filet Mignon - It was cooked to the right temperature, but it wasn't as juicy as other steaks I've had in Iowa. Good, but not particularly memorable. Other Notes: Shareable Side Dishes - One thing I really liked was that their side dishes are all shareable, so they feel more like appetizers than traditional sides. It makes it easy to try a variety, and I definitely want to explore more of them when I come back! Location & Accessibility - Even though Ruthie's is inside a casino, it's tucked on the side, so you don't have to deal with the cigarette smell. Parking is plentiful, though depending on where you park, it might be a bit of a walk. Bathrooms - The restrooms are located outside the restaurant on the right--not too far of a walk. Final Thoughts: Ruthie's is a true gem, and I can see why it's so highly recommended. The service was outstanding, the food was top-tier, and the small details--from our cozy booth to our waitress's personal touch on the cocktail menu--made the night extra special. It's the kind of place that turns a meal into a memory, and I can't wait to come back.

The kitchen consistently does a fantastic job, and I've never had a complaint about the quality of the meals. Unfortunately, the service has steadily gone downhill over the years. The bartenders are very unfriendly, sometimes outright rude, and many don't seem to have much experience mixing drinks. Politeness and a smile never hurts in the customer service industry especially if you are the first person customers see when entering your establishment. We come in about every two weeks if not more and the past few years it feels like there's a different bartender every time which makes it difficult to build any familiarity or feel welcomed as a regular customer. There used to be the same two or three girls every weekend but now it seems 10 more have been unnecessarily added. High turnover is noticeable, and it definitely affects the overall experience. One thing many of us longtime customers have noticed is that the atmosphere doesn't feel the same as it did when more family members seemed to be involved in running the business. It used to have a warm, welcoming feel that made people want to return. Now, that sense of hospitality seems to be missing. And good luck finding anyone with the last name Kalmes outside the kitchen. I genuinely want to see this restaurant succeed. The food is outstanding and deserves the loyal customer base it has built over the years. The Kalmes family in general is an amazing family and they deserve to continue their hometown legacy. However, exceptional food can only make up for poor service for so long. I believe they could benefit from reevaluating the front-of-house staff, investing in better training, and placing a greater emphasis on friendly, consistent customer service. I've waited a long time before posting this because I hoped things would improve and I also wanted to gather opinions from my fellow diners, as expected many of them agree with my sentiments. Unfortunately, after my most recent visit this weekend, I experienced the same issues yet again only worse--a new or different bartender. She was on her phone and eating throughout the 2 hours we were there. I had to physically go up and ask for menu's and also to place our order! The other bartender looked on her own trying to take care of a full bar. Just downright horrible service. Recently, I've heard there have been multiple complaints regarding their bartenders but it's obvious they chose to do nothing about it which is a shame. Hopefully they will start listening to their customers before it's too late.
