I have been here several times, and I have always enjoyed the delicious flavors and the freshness of the food. The look of the restaurant inside has changed a few times. when I was there last there was a casual seating area at the back of the restaurant. There were people there waiting for takeout orders. I really enjoyed the great chow mein with the beef. Next time I might try it with chicken or pork because the beef was a little hard to chew for my liking. The noodles tasted delicious and flavorful. I always have to order the cold cucumber salad. It is a great accompaniment to any dish. I added the peanuts to the cucumbers because I really like them together so if you order the cucumbers, they will not come with peanuts. It is a strange request, but they accommodated me with no problem. They had a case at the front of the restaurant with grapes and strawberries, skewered and coated in a crunchy sugary coating. It was a little bit messy, but I did not mind because it tasted so good. The strawberries were super sweet, fresh and juicy with a thin, sweet crunchy shell. I will try the grapes next time. We were taking a stroll in Chinatown deciding what to eat for lunch. Few of our first choices were either closed on Thurs or not open due to construction. We stumbled upon Great Wall and gave it a shot. The inside was a little different in a weird way. There was only three tables in the front and the back had a lounge area. I believe there were more tables hidden behind the curtain. We ordered: Fried rice - the corn in the fried rice tasted almost spoiled Beef brocoli - the beef was tender but not as tasty or fresh Garlic ribs - cut into small portions was not what I expected and a little dry Only great was the service and those fruit on a stick in the glass counter. They have revised their menu. They now have more Americanized items, named in a way you will be familiar with. I think they have kept most of their original menu just with the addition of items that will likely appeal to a wider audience. Still very good food and still possible to experience items you will not easily find elsewhere in the valley. read more

I'm pretty sure I am in Salt Lake City Chinatown. It's more like an Asian mall, though. This was really not the place I intended on eating at it, but I was in the mood for soup and this looked like a good choice. This is definitely a hole in the wall place. A small room with an opening to the kitchen. I would really like it to be a little more homey, if there was maybe some photos or artwork on the walls since it was kind of bare. The service was good, and it was more like eating in someone's house rather than a restaurant, which is fine with me. I will come back the next time I'm in town. read more

I don't know why we never dropped by this place to try the food. We always walked by. It's a cute little spot to dine in, just inside of China town mall. I'm so glad we finally did go in to try it while craving some authentic Chinese food. Because it did NOT disappoint. Every dish we got had so much flavor. I forgot the names of what we ordered but the salt and pepper calamari rings with the chili dipping sauce was awesome, the sautéed chicken dish was so full of flavor and spice and cooked crisp to perfection. We also tried the fried intestines which that was also very tasty. Even the eggplant with fish sauce was tasty! Some stuff we wanted to try were out like the fried crab and or lobster but I definitely will be going back. They also sold tangulu (not sure how To spell it) Its covered fruit and many people stopped to buy some. I never had one before so I was tempted and got The orange tangulu dessert. We had a good experience here at 7pm on a weekday evening. We didn't have to wait for a table, food came out fast. The eggplant was very good and I would order it again. It's sweet and salty in the right way. The garlic ribs, even though in the recommended category, were a bit dry for me so it's not quite my favorite dish. There was a FLY in the a choi...... the fried buns were crisp on the outside however the inside was super dry and bland The pork rib yam soup did not taste as smooth, felt like extra condiments were added to cover up non fresh pork. I feel like we have just discovered a gem!! Went to this restaurant today for the first time with a Taiwanese friend for lunch. The restaurant is small but very clean. We were greeted and seated immediately. My friend ordered a spicy fish soup (sorry can't remember the name), and I ordered the Fried Squid Rings (A59) & Seafood Chow Mein (A56). The Fried Squid was delicious! Crispy on the outside and just the right amount of tenderness inside, not rubbery at all. They put some dry seasonings on the side, absolutely enjoyed that with the squid! Both of were amazed by the size and taste of the spicy fish soup dish! It had knotted konjac noodle, potatoes, lotus root, seaweed, wakame and few other things in it. The broth was so tasty (little spicy, that's exactly why I loved it) that I couldn't stop just sipping it :P The seafood Chow Mein was good, but again the portion size surprised us...in a good way. Nowadays most of the times restaurants put very little meat/seafood in the dish...but that wasn't the care here. The item had enough seafood items for everyone to share. I'm actually very excited about this place, definitely going back very soon with my family to try other items! I just wish they had a lunch menu for weekdays with slightly lower price. Don't let the hole in the wall digs get you down about Great Wall Restaurant. This place IS authentic Chinese. I had a lovely chat with the owner lady (I don't know who is in the kitchen but I suspect the husband), and we rapped in my horrific Chinese. She is from Hong Kong but spent time as a child in Xiamen. The food is not that American Chinese CRAP and they are very accommodating to requests. I asked for vegetarian, and they were able to modify the Maipo tofu normally with pork to vegan. The food was delicious and even though the space is nothing to write home about, Great Wall is the real deal and the best Chinese option I've had in SLC and a long while. Pricing is reasonable and she keeps the place super clean. I'd definitely recommend Great Wall for a meal or take out. This was my first time here. I went in to order takeout and visually the place was clean with a friendly atmosphere. It is Sunday so only a couple tables being occupied. The staff at the counter was courteous, polite, helpful and super nice. My order didn't take long to complete and have me on my way. Upon getting home dug right in and to be honest not impressed. Not horrible but I've had much better fried rice. Edible, however pretty bland. And for what I received, value and flavor of the meal was mediocre at best. I didn't expect to find such an authentic chinese restaurant serving food mostly from Northern China here in SLC, but here it is! One way to tell if the chef knows what he is doing is to order chive fried egg and Shanghai braised pork. They showed proper execution (both pork and egg are soft) that I would be happy with in China. Fried water spinach is again authentic. We also had leek with lamb. It is different from what I know but there is so much regional variation so I can't comment on authenticity but it is surely tasty!!! This place is awesome! We've been meaning to go here and thank goodness we finally did. The food is phenomenal but they're a little short staffed so just don't be a jerk and you'll be fine. The prices aren't bad at all and we'll worth the quality of dishes. We had the sautéed pork in hot sauce, mapo tofu, garlic baby cabbage, dried green beans, boiled fish, and the shredded cucumbers. To bolster my efforts to re-learn how to properly use my wok while cooking at home, I've started following the cooking exploits of the Seattle-based, James Beard-nominated chef/author J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, whose youtube videos provide fantastic, step-by-step point-of-view videos on wok seasoning, maintenance, and (correct) use. More than once, Lopez-Alt has referenced Mapo Tofu (or Mabo Dofu, as you're inclined) as his very favorite childhood dish and, having heard at least one other Chinese chef I respected intimate the same, I set out to find a culturally authentic platter of it. Googling "best Mapo Tofu in Salt Lake City," I was directed to, among a couple other suggestions, Great Wall restaurant in the Chinatown Salt Lake plaza off of State Street. I was on my way. I found Great Wall through the main doors to the Chinatown Supermarket, and it was literally the type of establishment that likely gave rise to the expression "hole-in-the-wall." With two empty steam tables tucked up against the walls flanking the entrance, red and green walls, and a dining room the size of a middle-class living room, it was a masterpiece of understatement. I've learned not to be put off by this, however, as some of my best meals have been had in settings of the sort. My apprehension deepened when the usual complementary water was brought to the table, but was room temperature, and had no ice in it. If it had been just a few degrees warmer, and in a bowl, I might have undertaken the traditional washing of hands and/or silverwear, but it was in a glass, and I suspected that doing so would have drawn unwanted attention. Every bit of uncertainty was, however, rewarded with a piping hot bowl of aromatic Mapo Tofu with an accompanying bowl of rice. As far as I'm concerned, nothing is better than having my food arrive so hot that I can't eat it straight away, and I was delighted. There was no question that the best way to enjoy this would be with a large spoon: a little bit of rice sharing space on my untensil with the Mapo Tofu like old friends. I started picking small bites off of the edge and blowing on it, and I have to say that I can see how a dish this delicious could invoke childhood memories. The bean sauce and red chili peppers brought a heat that charmed the dish, but didn't overwhelm the palette. A perfect amount of employed Sichuan peppercorn drew the dish's heat forward but, at the same time, provided the exquisite numbing sensation that has infatuated Chinese diners for over two thousand years. The silky smooth tofu was a perfect counterpoint to the texture of the ground pork and chopped scallions, and subtle notes of garlic and ginger seemed to close each bite the way a conductor pinches off a prolonged note. If there was any American culinary experience that would be analogous, it would, perhaps, be a piping hot bowl of Texas chili on a very cold day. Was I overwhelmed by the hospitality? No. Was the dining room elegant? Not even a little bit. Would I go back for another serving of Great Wall's Mapo Tofu? Any day of the week! read more

Such a gem of a restaurant! Loved the service, food and authenticity of flavors. Absolutely would visit again. It was my fiancé's first time trying authentic Chinese and he hasn't stopped raving about it! The tofu and pork soup was divine and the perfect serving size. The shredded cucumber was unlike anything I have had before, and that is usually my go to dish. Unsure of the name of the pork dish we ordered but it was flavorful and melted in your mouth.
