It's taken me a long time to find a great place to have Chinese. This restaurant is a bit of a drive for us, but well worth it in my opinion. Parking is decent considering it's in a strip mall. Inside there is minimal decor, but it's clean & comfortable. There are certainly only a few seated patrons whenever we have come in, but they are always busy with constant to go orders. Their combination plates and the variety of options are fantastic. Portions are decent and adequately priced. They have some of the best sweet & sour sauce I've tasted in a long time. My daughter loves their ham fried rice & getting toddlers to eat can be a battle. 100% recommend! read more

There are only a handful of good Chinese food places in Utah and Mountain City Restaurant is definitely one of them. The food is extremely flavorful and they have really great portion sizes. The noodles are packed to the brim and the 2 egg roll size comes with an extra egg roll and two wontons. The interior is a bit tiny but there are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy a meal with friends and family. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful even gave us extra fortune cookies in our takeaway. read more

This review is for a recent take out order of their lunch specials. The food was cooked up fresh and fast and tasted great! For the price the portions were generous and we had two meals out of each lunch special. My son loved the cashew chicken with fried rice and egg roll. Full of cashews! My mom and I got the mixed veggies with chicken with white rice which was very healthy and tasty. I've been coming here since high school and its family owned, awesome Chinese food. For Holladay area, the prices are cheap too but not quality. Restaurant is quaint and clean. Parking is in a small shopping center with other businesses so its always busy but one or two open spots every time ive gone. Takeout was packaged really well with no leaks. Definitely will keep coming back in the future to support this locally owned Restaurant. read more

This place is so great. The food was fantastic, perfect in every way. Crispy chicken, sweet and savory sauce, and crunchy eggroll. This meal just really hit the spot. The restaurant has a really casual atmosphere, which I really enjoyed. I was able to just hang out and enjoy my food, without an overbearing server or feeling like I'm in the way. Whenever I needed something I could just catch my servers eye and he'd come take care of me. I really love this place, and am already looking forward to my next visit. read more

Solid 4 stars. Cute little space in a small strip mall up in one of my favorite areas of SLC area. Garlic chicken dinner combo was served piping hot and delicious...small issue for me was a LOT of bell pepper and only 4 string pea pods. Fried ham rice tasty...could have been hotter. Think maybe it was cooked first then set aside to took the chicken. egg drop soup a very good version. strong chicken flavor in the broth. shrimp appetizer good. loved both sauces. 2 cream cheese wonton and 1 egg roll come with dinner combo. Both were delicious. Hot and crispy, not too greasy. Good portions. I left with a lot of leftovers. This California girl liked this nice little spot with very friendly service. Very dependable versions of well known Chinese American dishes. I use them for takeout, and orders are always complete and on time.

We've been looking for a Chinese restaurant since moving to the area and this will like not be it. But it will do in a pinch. Stick to the classics and you'll be fine. Sweet and sour chicken, sure. Hot and sour soup, yum. Fried rice, absolutely. My beef and broccoli left much to be desired but the cream cheese wontons made up for what it lacked. The server was very gracious and attentive and the atmosphere was what you'd expect for a strip mall restaurant. It's centrally located in downtown Holladay, which made it convenient. Not sure we will go back anytime soon. read more

Our party of three had vegetable chow mein, beef chow fun, chicken fried rice, white rice, salt baked shrimp, and pot stickers. On the menu you could get a dinner combo for $14.95 with the same things as the family dinner for $16.55. It's misleading to say that it's a "family dinner" when they charge $16.55 per person. I couldn't imagine eating here with my family. When we clarified with our waitress she just said short answers saying "no" and that's it when we asked if there was a mistake. The service mixed with the mediocre food is -1000 stars if you ask me. Will not be returning. We feel scammed. I attached photos below to show the misleading menu. Don't go here. I've been coming to the mountain city cafe for lunch over the past few years and have been impressed with their friendly service and good American style Chinese food. You get a lot of value for the cost of the meal and each lunch entree item comes with a good choice of side dishes. I get the hot and sour soup which is just that spicy and sour in just the right levels for my taste. I also order the ham fried rice and egg foo young, which isn't a choice in many places. Today I had the Szechuan chicken which was a hearty portion featuring chicken in a sweet and sour style sauce with snow peas, bean sprouts, onions, peppers and carrot slices. It was good but maybe a bit sweet for me. I'll probably stick to the Kung Po next time. But for consistency and value, Mountain City Cafe is hard to beat in Holladay for a decent Chinese style lunch. read more

My mom and I frequent this establishment a lot and realized I never wrote a review. We have only come for their lunch specials, and admittedly, we have only tried their americanized dishes. A great tidbit of information. They make their dishes from scratch and NO pre-made sauces loaded with MSG. They use chicken bullion (which may have some MSG), but they do not add MSG to enhance flavoring. Their service is fast, efficient, and friendly enough. It's a typical small Chinese restaurant. There's not much in the way of decor, a few tables and booths. The fun part is the TVs. They run a show featuring an Asian woman who does it all. It's fascinating to watch. The lunch combos are only $10 and come with soup ( egg drop or hot and sour), rice (white or fried), and your choice of an egg roll, a cream cheese wonton, or an egg foo young patty with sauce. I love the egg foo young patty! It is filled with veggies and delicious. The hot and sour is pretty good, and the portions decent. Bottom line, their lunch is worth the price, quick, tasty, and consistent. Give them a try. I think you'll be glad you did... and try the egg foo young. read more

I think this place is under new management. I tried it twice, the first time was the New Year's Eve. It was crazy, even though I ordered hours ahead, but it still took another hour before I got my orders (note to everyone, if you can avoid pick up at 6pm, avoid it). The 2nd time was much better, and I am glad that I gave it another try. The Orange chicken is really good. It's crispy, the sweetness & the sourness is in perfect balance; we also like the tofu with vegetables. I recommend "Lo Mein" over flat noodle. I'll definitely go back again. The food is fine. And I really mean fine. Not good, not bad, just fine. We got the walnut chicken (pretty good), fried rice (absolutely terrible, worse than Panda Express), Sweet and sour veggies (good), and egg drop soup (good? A little less than good?). Overall we were unimpressed because it lacked flavor so probably won't be returning. But could work for some people if you need Chinese food close to Holladay. read more

We ordered takeout on Christmas Eve. It was very busy, but when we arrived our order was all ready. Service was quick, very friendly and courteous. We had general Tso's, cashew chicken and lemon chicken. All were delicious. The ham fried rice was good as well. The Singapore noodles were excellent. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants we have found that will actually make the spicy dishes, spicy! The egg rolls were ok, not my favorite. I prefer the bigger style. By far the best Chinese food since Sampan. When they closed I was devistated because nobody came close, so I was thrilled when I tried the food here at Mountain City. It's hard to find good Chinese food that doesn't have odd flavors or meat that is slimy and unidentifiable. Not here, perfect chunks of white meat chicken, tasty beef and delicious sauces. Our order was ready about 20 minutes after placement. When I picked it up it was bagged and ready to go. The food was still hot, fresh and delicious when I brought it home. FYI - They have their entrance blocked off so that only one person can enter at a time. They also set the food on the table and only talk to you through a window. Everything was cooked to perfection, not too greasy. The veggies still had some crunch! The tofu was crunchy but moist (other places cook it too hot and it's mushy inside). I don't know how I haven't left this place a review yet. This has been our go-to Chinese food for so many years now. I grew up only eating at some very old and authentic Chinese restaurants in Roy and Ogden and the old Pagoda restaurant here in SLC. They have mostly all closed now, so in our search for anything that comes close to our nostalgic restaurants, we found many disappointments until finding Mountain City. You get the amazing food and kind, hospitable service that is customary to what I've always known. Anything you order here is always consistent and delicious....
