garlic chicken and ham fried rice
    Tamara S.

Solid 4 stars. Cute little space in a small strip mall up in one of my favorite areas of SLC area. Garlic chicken dinner combo was served piping hot and delicious...small issue for me was a LOT of bell pepper and only 4 string pea pods. Fried ham rice tasty...could have been hotter. Think maybe it was cooked first then set aside to took the chicken. egg drop soup a very good version. strong chicken flavor in the broth. shrimp appetizer good. loved both sauces. 2 cream cheese wonton and 1 egg roll come with dinner combo. Both were delicious. Hot and crispy, not too greasy. Good portions. I left with a lot of leftovers. This California girl liked this nice little spot with very friendly service. And very clean!

We've been looking for a Chinese restaurant since moving to the area and this will like not be it. But it will do in a pinch. Stick to the classics and you'll be fine. Sweet and sour chicken, sure. Hot and sour soup, yum. Fried rice, absolutely. My beef and broccoli left much to be desired but the cream cheese wontons made up for what it lacked. The server was very gracious and attentive and the atmosphere was what you'd expect for a strip mall restaurant. It's centrally located in downtown Holladay, which made it convenient. Not sure we will go back anytime soon.

The food is super tasty and takeout is quick and food warm. I recommend trying the flat noodles!

Pork Chow Mein, egg foo young. Ham Fried Rice lunch combo. Plus soup, all for $6.99!

I've been coming to the mountain city cafe for lunch over the past few years and have been impressed with their friendly service and good American style Chinese food. You get a lot of value for the cost of the meal and each lunch entree item comes with a good choice of side dishes. I get the hot and sour soup which is just that spicy and sour in just the right levels for my taste. I also order the ham fried rice and egg foo young, which isn't a choice in many places. Today I had the Szechuan chicken which was a hearty portion featuring chicken in a sweet and sour style sauce with snow peas, bean sprouts, onions, peppers and carrot slices. It was good but maybe a bit sweet for me. I'll probably stick to the Kung Po next time. But for consistency and value, Mountain City Cafe is hard to beat in Holladay for a decent Chinese style lunch.

My mom and I frequent this establishment a lot and realized I never wrote a review. We have only come for their lunch specials, and admittedly, we have only tried their americanized dishes. A great tidbit of information. They make their dishes from scratch and NO pre-made sauces loaded with MSG. They use chicken bullion (which may have some MSG), but they do not add MSG to enhance flavoring. Their service is fast, efficient, and friendly enough. It's a typical small Chinese restaurant. There's not much in the way of decor, a few tables and booths. The fun part is the TVs. They run a show featuring an Asian woman who does it all. It's fascinating to watch. The lunch combos are only $10 and come with soup ( egg drop or hot and sour), rice (white or fried), and your choice of an egg roll, a cream cheese wonton, or an egg foo young patty with sauce. I love the egg foo young patty! It is filled with veggies and delicious. The hot and sour is pretty good, and the portions decent. Bottom line, their lunch is worth the price, quick, tasty, and consistent. Give them a try. I think you'll be glad you did... and try the egg foo young.

10/10 Service, their prices are not bad, and so many greaaat options. I've had the King Pao Chicken which was a good amount of spice and I just got the chicken fried rice which is my new favorite.

Very dependable versions of well known Chinese American dishes. I use them for takeout, and orders are always complete and on time.

Their menu changes weekly so it's always exciting to see what their new burgers are every Thursday…read more My friends ordered their "gyro" burger and I ordered off the menu along with a few appetizers. I didn't try the gyro burger because it was very raw on the inside. It was lamb and wagyu but I prefer my burger meats to be cooked all the way through. My friends said it was sweet and it's probably because they glazed the bun. The fat bastard oysters were too big for my liking. There's also gelato on top which was weird because it made the oyster taste like it was partially frozen. I don't recommend this. The rolls tasted like biscuits. It was crumbly and it wasn't expected for a nice restaurant. The heirloom tomato pastry was my favorite dish of the night. The half sashimi trout was more like a stew in sweet sauce. The baby yellow potatoes were just added without any seasonings. Assuming it should soak in the sweet juices? I didn't care for it. Trout was good, but preferred that the skin was crispy, which was extremely soggy, drowned in the sauce. Server asked if I wanted bread to drink the sauce and sure. Why not. It may taste better with regular bread and it wasn't. You can also skip valet parking if you just walk an extra minute down the parking lot. I forgot what one of the desserts name but it was the one with butter cake. This was extremely sweet too with the gooey caramel sauce. The donut was ridiculously expensive at $16 with a little honeycomb decoration. Nothing special with the desserts. Overall, everything is sweet here. Their menu is a lot and I feel like the burger menu can be a little too much and trying too hard to be fancy.

It was my mother's birthday and we wanted to spend a little extra time with my folks. The menu hasn't changed much over the years with many of the same staple items that have been here for years. They do switch them up a little from time to time adding a different side or accompaniment. The fried chicken, meatloaf, Wagyu steak and so on. The difference is that their prices have gone up 50% most dishes used to run around $28, with the Wagyu steak being $59. Now everything is around $44-49 and the Wagyu is still $59. The small bowl of soup used to be around $8 now $12. Appetizers were $12-18 now $17-28. For four of us, no drinks, the bill came to $320 with a 20% tip.

They do full-service sit-down and to-go orders and have a wide selection of hot and cold sandwiches, bagels, dessert, other New York/Jewish style deli foods, and beer! Sloppy Joe - 5/5 - A large (1/2 lb) double decker sandwich with pastrami and corned beef. There are 3 layers of bread. The meats are tender and flavorful and blend nicely together with the thousand island dressing and slaw between the layers. It also comes with a side, I picked the potato salad which was good too. Not too much mayo but it was still nice and creamy. I just wish I got a little more potato salad to match the portion size of the sandwich! Potato Latke Pancakes - 4.5/5 - They were nice, hot, and crispy. You get 2 pancakes which have a nice thickness to them too. The flavor was good, I just think you should get more sour cream and apple sauce. It comes with a small cup of each, but its not quite enough for the 2 pancakes and its 50c each to get extra! Matzo Ball Soup - 3/5 - The matzo ball and soup broth both had a good flavor. The proportions were just off however, a huge matzo ball but not enough broth. And the broth didn't have enough of chicken meat and veggies (carrot/celery). I basically had 1/2 the matzo ball left over at the end Attempted Murder Imperial Stout Beer - 5/5 - Its a vanilla cinnamon stout. The flavor is subtle but in a good way! Its not sweet, but has a smooth bitterness and mouthfeel with a slight fragrance of the vanilla cinnamon. If you like stout, def give this a try. Its a strong one too, 10.5% ABV! The restaurant was clean, service was good, and there is a good amount of seating and its decorated nicely inside. Def give this place a try!

I waited on a cute little couch for my sandwich to be done and it was so peaceful in there for a Monday lunch. Just some elderly couples eating and a few young families. Very nice.
