The doctors here are great, but the vet techs could use some serious professionalism training. They think our puppy is cute so every time we go, they take him out of the room and apparently play with him, let him meet other techs, and even meet other dogs. They never ask our permission, they just take him without asking before we even realize what's happening (often saying it's for a complimentary nail trim bc the vet is running behind or something) and we won't see him for a half an hour. Then the vet comes in and says "oh they love your dog, they're all just saying hi to him." Another time he needed an xray so they took him to the back. The vet came in 20 minutes later without our dog to discuss the xray, and we literally had to ask where our dog was before we left since he never came back. It's so inappropriate, he's not a toy he is our pet. It would be like taking your car for service and then the entire dealership takes your car for a joyride. Additionally, we had an issue with our puppy and tried to call or email pictures to the office to see if it's something we should even make an appt for, and they were so rude and unhelpful and wouldn't answer any questions without us making an appt. They were very unhelpful and insensitive and I did not get the impression that they truly cared about our pet. read more

Because of recurring ear infections our Yorkie Sammy has been suffering from, my local Vet advised that I seek support from a specialist, specifically a Veterinarian Dermatologist. After some research I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Woodburn at GAVH. The day after I my local Vet sent my pets medical records to GAVH, I received a phone call from Dr. Woodburn. Dr. Woodburn then proceeded to spend an hour on the phone with me discussing my pet symptoms, possible causes and treatments. We have some great Vets at my local clinic but this level of support was outstanding. Yesterday Sammy, his older sister and I made the 2 hour drive to the clinic. The staff was great and Sammy seemed to make some new friends. Dr. Woodburn examined Sammy and continued the treatment that my local Vet had started. Obviously I am not going to give up our local Vet but if you live in Annapolis, or every need a specialist, you cannot go wrong with GAVH and Dr. Woodburn. read more

We chose to switch to this vet about two years ago, as it came highly recommended by friends. In the first year of being a patient, we had no general issues with the interactions for a well visit for our two dogs. We did note that it seemed quite pricey, and the we were surprised by the bill we received, but the staff seemed pleasurable. Fast forward a year (and in the time of COVID) we return for our dogs well visit. We noted a lump we were watching on our golden retriever, and the doctor even brought to our attention some other concerns for our mixed breed that we had not noticed. We appreciated her observations and concerns. Come January 2021, the lump on our golden needed to be removed. After just having our first baby, this came as a financial shock. We were quoted for the surgery by GAVH and scheduled this for mid February. The first surgery went well, but we were surprised to learn that the results of the biopsy would take some time as the tissue was being shipped out to Colorado for testing. Additionally, a weeks worth of antibiotics came in at $100 and the cost for the surgery was $500 more than what we were quoted. The day after surgery our dog got quite sick, vomiting more than three times. I called the vet numerous times with my concerns (especially since my dog had just undergone major surgery) and was continuously pushed to the doctor's voicemail or not given a clear answer by the office staff. After 4 days, we FINALLY received a call back which was too late and we had resolved the issue on our own by feeding our pup rice and chicken and taking a break from the meds. It turned out our pup was going to need to undergo a second surgery to fully remove the cancer. To avoid the high cost for antibiotics, I placed an order with Chewy to relieve the financial stress. Again, the communication with the office staff was subpar and no one could confirm if my prescription had been approved. I had to continually call until a finally got an answer from someone in the office. After the 2nd surgery, we were in need of a short supply of the meds til our prescriptions arrived (which were delayed due to GAVH's late response). Our doctor, Lisa Gerity, kindly comped us a days worth of meds since the discrepancy had been on their end. However, shipping got delayed and I needed one more pill. I called, fully prepared to pay for their overpriced meds in order to aid my dog, only to be made to feel like a fool by an office staff member for going through Chewy. I hung up and chanced our luck. 2 weeks later when we went to have the staples removed, we waited WAY too long to be helped by a vet tech. Our appointment was for 830am, and I had to bring our 2month old baby along, as my husband was at work. We arrived at 824am and phoned in to let them know we were there, and I was told someone would be right out. At 839am, and still no service, I called in to let them know we were still waiting, only to be told that the tech would be out to get us in just a minute. FINALLY at 855am, a tech came out for our dog and completed the staple removal which took less than five minutes. I am just over the lack of communication, the lack of knowledge of the office staff, and feeling like a nobody while paying extreme prices for subpar care of my pets. read more

I am deeply hurting right now. Last Sunday we brought my dog in for diarrhea, seizures, and swelling in her abdomen area. They gave us medicine and told us the swelling would subside as the medicine starts working. Did bloodwork, xrays, the whole thing was $754. We brought her back home. Over the next 4 days she got worse. The swelling got to be so bad that her abdomen almost seemed to touch the ground. She groaned a lot and was unable to settle down. I kept remembering how the vet said the swelling would go away on it's own. By Thursday we took her to the emergency clinic because the swelling was worse than ever. It wasn't going away with this medicine. She seemed to be struggling to breathe and panting heavily. Basically the emergency vet (not at GAVH) ran tests and the seizures were a huge concern, which GAVH dismissed altogether when we said she had been having them. But the swelling was to the point that her body wasn't holding water in the right places and it was leaking into her tissues. Thursday night, we bawled over her as we put her to sleep. Now I am not saying that GAVH made her worse. I know there is no guarantee that any pet can be treated if their condition is grave. But I'm saying that we spent $754 at GAVH, and they did not help her. They dismissed serious issues like seizures and convinced us that the fluid from her swelling would be reabsorbed. I didn't get my dog help sooner because these symptoms were overlooked and trivialized by their office. I don't know in the end if anyone could've saved my dog. All I know is I got charged a ridiculous price by this office, and they did absolutely nothing to help her. They should've insisted that we get her fluid drained. They should've investigated the cause of her seizures. They should've helped her in some way or referred me to someone who could. Now my dog is dead, and I'll never know if things could've worked out differently had she been given the appropriate diagnosis and care. That is eating me up inside. I know this is a harsh review, but this dog was my baby, and I am absolutely heartbroken. Thankful for credit cards to take care of such a fruitless vet visit, but I will still regret every single payment until it is finished. I can't in good faith return to this place, nor can I recommend it. read more

I first met Dr. Anderson roughly four (4) years ago when I rescued my Conan, a West Highland White Terrier, through Maryland Westie Rescue. (I LOVE Westies!) The knowledge and the "bedside manner" of Dr. Anderson and staff is highly laudable. Recently, I took Conan to see Dr. Anderson for a second opinion. Conan's current vet is good, but seems to have "lost his edge." I left GAVH with far more information about Conan's 2nd stage kidney disease. I took my 2 then 3 dogs to GAVH starting in 2002. I have always been highly picky about my dogs' veterinary care and it is imperative to me that I am fully in charge of my dogs' care right along with my veterinarian. My dogs & I have seen Dr Elizabeth Daher for the over 10 years I lived in Maryland. She is warm and clear and really truly listens and she takes as much time as it needs. She thinks outside the box and suggests things like acupuncture (very helpful for arthritis!). The receptionists are helpful and I always was greeted cheerfully. We just moved to Florida and I had to go through 3 veterinary clinics before finding one almost as wonderful as GAVH and Dr Daher. read more

This was my 1st visit here. I chose this place based on their rating and the multiple services provided...I knew my case would likely involve several tests and/or procedures, so this was important to me. I had an emergency and got an appt just a few hours after calling. The facility was well maintaned, clean and it had a warm and intimate environment. Everyone had a role and things ran very efficiently! Communication was good and things were explained well. My tiny 3.1 pound dog was attacked by a large dog and was injured in her mouth and ear...the entire staff was welcoming and attentive. My little girl was very traumatized and scared but she was treated so sweetly and gently by Doctor Jennifer Phillips. Although it was a busy day there, I felt that she (and myself!) were well taken care of as if we were their only patient. I was even able to get lab results within 10 minutes and a prescription filled on site! I would definitely recommend them and I look forward to going back for one of their many other services! Lastly, I was expecting a ridiculous bill...it was not. My appointment was lengthy and involved a thorough exam, blood test/results, consultation with a second doctor, diagnosis, a meal plan, referral to a dental Surgeon, two prescriptions and it was $125. Thank you for what you do and loving your job ~ it matters and translates into happy patients (and their happy human)! read more

Update: the veterinarian ended up calling us at 4pm to find out how far away we were ("Only 2 miles" I said); "Would you like to come in tonight to pick up Camden?" she asked. "Yes! Please. Thank you!" We ended up getting there at 4:05, only 5 minutes late. So thankful they ultimately waited those few extra minutes for us...I wonder if they saw this review? Regardless, I'm updating my rating from 1 star to 4 stars. I'm still not happy with how I was initially treated when I called in, but hopeful that they are reconsidering their customer service strategies. We have been utilizing GAVH for more than three years and I was shocked by the horrible customer service we received today. We are road tripping back to Annapolis from South Carolina and called to advise that our GPS has us arriving at 4:10 (due to dreaded 95 traffic) to pick up our pup (they close at 4pm). Since they are staffed 24 hours a day I asked if I could pay over the phone so I could still pick up our dog today. "No." I then asked if anyone would be willing to just stay 10 extra minutes for us, please. (I miss my pup!) Silence, then simply "No." The receptionist (Denise) wasn't even sympathetic or apologetic. No compassion. Just "no, no, no." "Wow, great customer service" I said as a last resort to hopefully wake her up a bit. "Yep" was all I got. You'd think that when someone is asking for 10 minutes of flexibility you'd get it, especially since on average we wait 10-20 minutes every time we come in for an appointment. We have spent thousands of dollars at the establishment over the last three years and you better believe I'll be taking my business elsewhere! read more

I cannot recommend GAVH enough! My 12-week old puppy, Pablo, has been very sick and has now seen Dr. Edge, Dr. Manyin, and Dr. Keegan. They have all been extremely knowledgeable, caring, kind, and thoughtful. They have taken the time to listen to me and thoroughly answer all of my questions and concerns. They have advised me very thoughtfully and also tried to avoid any unnecessary costs wherever possible. I wish human doctors were like the veterinarians at GAVH! I have been taking my dogs to GAVH for at least 15 years. They are compassionate and knowledgeable in all aspects of pet care. My most recent experience was a consultation with Dr. Phillips for possible acupuncture for my aging dog. After a VERY thorough examination, she determined that acupuncture may not be beneficial and suggested other options. I was impressed with the time she spent examining my dog and her honesty. I will never take my dogs to another veterinary practice and highly recommend that you consider GAVH when your pet needs medical care. read more

I've been taking my pets to GAVH for years (and years) and you would be hard pressed to find a better veterinary hospital. The front office and the techs are friendly, courteous and efficient, as well as being compassionate. The vets are everything you would want from your Veterinarian; kind, gentle, informative (never condescending), and very attentive to your pet's needs. And it's a clean practice. When you walk in, you aren't greeted with an unpleasant odor. None of my cats actually like to go to the vet (do they ever?), but they are much more relaxed at GAVH than they ever were at any other vet I've been to. I have never been as satisfied with a practice as I am with GAVH. I had to put down one of my best (pet) friends 4 days before Christmas (2015). It was an incredibly difficult time for me and I really appreciate the kindness and compassion I received from them. The attending vet (Dr. Duane Woodburn) actually took the time to send me a personally written sympathy card. I already knew he was a great vet, but that was above and beyond, and profoundly appreciated. read more

We are new to Annapolis and I had to bring our Great Dane in without an appointment yesterday and they were gracious, thorough, comforting and just all around awesome with us both. They have great systems in place so that you aren't left struggling with a 165# dog at the counter trying to pay for your services (they bring the paperwork into the exam room), had someone help me take him back to the car and just generally made an emergency trip to the vets a good experience. We Shelled out $119.90 for a recent 10-minute visit at Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital. $$74.00 for the vet's time; $30 for lab work and $16 for 5 pills. Billed up-front. We get that vets have to earn their pay, but this is definitely on the high-end of the typical pay scale for ordinary veterinarian services. read more

We recently took our puppy in for his first check up with Dr. Edge. He had an allergic reaction to his vaccines and the team at GAVH was amazing. They acted quickly, were so reassuring, caring, and (I learned later) carried him around and babied him while he was recuperating. I have recommended this vet to more friends than I can count and was always very happy with them until my recent visit. My cat had a bite wound and I was charged almost $500 for what I was told was a 30 minute procedure. That is unacceptable. I had a 7:00 am appointment and was told that they wouldn't have 30 minutes available until 12:00. I felt bad leaving him for 5 hours in a cage and waiting but did it. Imagine my surprise when I made the trip and they hadn't begun. A phone call would have been nice. I ended up getting him 2 1/2 hours later. I didn't feel like the vet treated me with any respect. She had treated my Chinchilla previously and told me it was a male because we were planning on getting it a playmate and didn't want babies. Again imagine my surprise when he had a baby. Now, they want $400 to fix the male and again they told me I had a male. I never would have intentionally allowed them to mate. I no longer recommend this vet. If you do go, ask lots of questions and don't accept everything they try to sell you. I am so disappointed. I really thought I had found the perfect vet. read more

The staff is excellent although I have heard people complain that there are too many docs and it is quite possible to not see the same one in a year if you don't make requests. I've been going to Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital for nearly 25 years. I've entrusted my four amazing dogs in their care and have been thrilled with the care they have received. When my dog became very ill, I took her in to see the good Doc's at GAVH. When they gave me the bad news that Krystal had splenic cancer, they said to come in and talk with them about the options. I had an hour talk with the doc and they advised me what they would do if this had been their dog. Having to put her down was the hardest decision of my life and they helped me step by step and held my hand (literally) as it became a reality. Most recently, when my dog became very ill overnight, I took him in to see the doctor (who squeezed him in so I didn't have to take him to the ER), only to find out my dog was in grave danger of dying of what the doc suspected to be Pancreatitis. Not only was he dead on with his diagnosis, he was dead on with the treatment he provided for Jack. In all accounts, Jack should have passed away from this disease last memorial day, but because of Dr. Meivogel and Dr. Monk and their fastidious care of my little buddy, he sits with me here as I write this review. read more

I highly recommend this facility and particularly the people who make this place special. I just had a very difficult and challenging couple of days where my father had to decide whether it was time for his beloved pet to pass. Naturally, my father was incredibly reluctant to make this decision. And he was not in a position to know what needed to happen except for the expertise of the the GAVH staff. His very old dog was worsening with each day and we were facing some important quality of life issues. Because there was some urgency to our situation, the GAVH folks prioritized our situation evaluating what could or should be done and then taking the time to talk with my father about the issues and helped outline a process for making this decision. They were incredibly patient and loving with my father and with his dear pooch. What struck me the most was how the GAVH staff made the well-being of the dog the focal point when they could have very well pushed medical procedures/medications to my father who had no idea what was best for that moment. It was clear that their primary focus was the overall well-being of the dog. I ascribe all of this to the wonderful staff at the hospital from the person who answered the phone, to the professionalism, integrity, and compassion of the vet Dr. Monk who made himself fully available both in terms of time and spirit to help my father (and me) through this difficult day. I can honestly say coming to GAVH made me appreciate how there are still businesses out there that are about the well-being of our animals and their clients - and not the mighty dollar. read more
