It's been about a month since our experience with Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Hospital, and I've been wanting to share this. Our anxious 9-year-old dog, Bubba, had been sick for about a day and a half--vomiting, not eating, and not drinking water. At one point, he seemed to be improving, but around 5 a.m. on Easter morning, he was panting and pacing. We knew we had to take him to the ER. We were especially anxious because of our past traumatic vet visits, but we called ahead and were told they were still working through overnight patients and to bring him in so they could monitor him. Despite how weak he was--we had been carrying him up and down three flights of stairs--he insisted on walking into the ER himself. They took him to triage right away, and after a few hours (less than we expected), we were brought back to a room. Dr. Fleury came in, asked thoughtful questions, and recommended additional testing. We shared our past experiences and anxiety, and she was incredibly empathetic and reassuring. She made it clear that she wanted this experience to be different from the negative ones we had before--and she truly followed through on that. She suggested we go home while tests were being run. A couple of hours later, she called with an update: while most results looked normal, they found fluid in his abdomen and a mass near his trachea. She explained that an ultrasound could provide more clarity, but it wouldn't be available until the next day. We could either bring him home or admit him overnight. Although we had never left him before, we chose to admit him so he could be monitored and asked if we could see him again first. She immediately said yes. When we returned, the hospital was much busier, but we were brought fairly quickly to a quiet, private room that seemed away from the noise of other dogs. Dr. Fleury reviewed the X-rays with us, and it was clear things were serious. When she brought Bubba in, we could see he had declined--his belly was distended, his eyes were glazed, and he seemed uncomfortable and restless. Dr. Fleury stayed with us, explaining that even after consulting with colleagues, they couldn't determine the exact cause without more testing. She also understood our concern about leaving him overnight, especially if his condition worsened. We were both overwhelmed, and she handled the situation with incredible compassion. After spending time with Bubba, we came to the heartbreaking realization that he was suffering, and the dog we knew wasn't really there anymore. It was the hardest decision we've ever had to make, but we knew it was time. We spoke with Dr. Fleury again and asked her to be honest about his chances. She explained that while more testing was possible, there were no guarantees, and he could continue to decline. Through tears, we told her we didn't want him to suffer any longer. She gently agreed it was likely the best decision and supported us fully. From there, everything was handled with such care. The staff gave us time, space, blankets, and quiet guidance through the process. When the time came, Dr. Fleury and a vet tech sat with us on the floor. My wife held Bubba, and we were both there with him in his final moments. It was peaceful, and we were able to say goodbye with dignity and love. Afterward, we were given as much time as we needed and were able to leave quietly through a side door. Later, we received a handwritten condolence card from Dr. Fleury, which meant so much to us. Losing Bubba was devastating, but the compassion, patience, and humanity shown by Dr. Fleury and the entire team made an unbearable experience feel as gentle as it possibly could have been. She set out to ensure this would not be another traumatic vet experience for us--and despite the heartbreaking outcome, she did exactly that. Our experience was nothing short of exceptional. We are deeply grateful we ended up here. While we hope we don't need emergency care again anytime soon, we know exactly where we would go and who we would trust. read more

It was 8:40p when Tina took our call and triaged us with one of their doctors immediately. We only had to wait a few moments when she came back to advise we should seek medical attention for our 8mo old miniature dachshund for ingesting a cob of corn. She did tell us it was a busy night (when we got there--it was overwhelming to see the various cases they were dealing with), and said even if we don't decide to wait at their facility we should take her to be seen. We decided to visit this emergency clinic anyway, and I'm very glad they handled her with so much caution and care. The vet assistant who triaged us came back multiple times with updates after our puppy was taken back (~1hr) and thanked us for our patience. It's important to note that while we were waiting with (and for) our puppy, multiple dogs came in on stretchers. Dr. McCullen was incredibly thorough and reassuring, while also being practical and rational.. we appreciated the extra step in providing an estimate for our services to that point. Albeit our case was not as severe or life-threatening as the others we saw, we still feel like we made the right decision coming in that night and I'm thankful our puppy was in the care of the right members of staff. I know they did their best with what they were dealt with and I'm very appreciative for their kindness and compassion. Our puppy is doing just great now. read more

Unfortunately I had to bring my pup here a couple nights ago because he was experiencing a GI issue and he was unable to get comfortable. He was making noises as if he was gagging and it was lasting for several hours. I arrived at 12:15 am and called upon arrival per instructions listed online. They first asked me to explain the reason for the visit and then a nurse came out to pick him up. I then called back so they could obtain the rest of our information. I was told that the doctor would be calling soon to discuss everything. Approximately one to two hours later the doctor called and explained her findings. Reaper was given anti nausea/pain meds to make him comfortable. Unfortunately they were unable to do an xray without sedating him because he is a "difficult patient". I would have felt better if an xray was done but I understand they didn't feel like it was super necessary and we didn't want to sedate him. Eventually, after paying over the phone, Reaper was brought back out to me and we went home. There were several questionable reviews about this location but I was happy with my experience. I knew taking a dog to a 24 hour emergency vet at 1 am wouldn't be cheap but the damage wasn't as bad as I anticipated. The overall communication was great and the staff were all friendly and welcoming. They encouraged me to call if I had any follow up questions. I hope I never need to use them again but if so, I am confident I will receive great service. Although he was a bit lethargic the next day or two, he is definitely feeling better and I believe the medicine helped him relax and get rid of the issue. read more

The person answering the call when it was connected to the internal medicine extension is extremely abrupt and rude. I had gone to this ER twice and had never had a bad experience. I called to help my friend who was frantic about the lab test drawn for her cat a week ago and she still has not received the result. She was rushing to get you off the phone. She lack's empathy - I understand that they they are extremely busy clinic however if you are assigned to answer a call you should have more patience with people calling for your help. read more

Apparently, a stomach bug was going thru my home - they handled this with excellent and very compassionate care. I am one of "those people" who constantly calls to check in as I was worried. Going to an emergency vet is never a good thing. And in this particular case it did not end well but our experience there was the best I could ask for. Everyone was supportive and caring. They didn't bat an eye lash at the tears. They have clear understandable information. They even gave us cost information before we had to make decisions. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful when it came to our options of payment. I was truly enjoying my experience. That was until after i spoke with the DR. she firstly told us that she really wasn't sure what was wrong with our cat, which is understandable, our situation was complicated. she decided the best course of action was to treat her for as if she was having an allergic reaction. All was well, we were ready to sign the discharge paperwork when we were asked to come back into a waiting room. That's when the DR came in a second time and informed us that one the technicians had overdosed my cat on benadryl. i'm fully understanding that mistakes can happen, but this is completely unacceptable. i do appreciate the discount the gave me on the appointment price and their sincere apologies. but that is a serious mistake, what if she wasn't getting benadryl and was being administered something stronger? i'm not gonna sit here and say i don't recommend this place because it seems they do care, but a mistake like that is very hard to forgive. read more

My dog was shaking, lethargic, and had not eaten or drank anything in 3 days and very dehydrated. I went here and sat in the waiting room for almost 5 hours without being seen. I watched several pets come in, be seen, and discharged within this time. As I asked the front desk for an update, this other receptionist decided to chime in and start being rude to me saying, "this is a hospital be glad your pets not in critical condition!" And even tried making up emotional situations like saying the other receptionist went in the back to give CPR but I actually had just asked her to get my dog, and that's what she was doing. I am well aware where I was and the protocol to take more critical animals, but the answer as to why I sat there waiting, while several other animals had "normal vitals", were seen before my dog. Thankfully the gentleman behind the desk was able to tone down the conversation. Yet, the front desk ladies eating door dash and doing nothing but being argumentative, continued to try and be emotional. I took my dog and left while the other front desk woman was spewing more emotional nonsense behind me. This place is severely understaffed and the ones who do work there will either just sit at the front desk and cause drama while ordering food or pick and choose the animals they decide they want to see. Go somewhere else to care for your fur baby. read more

This clinic told me to euthanize my cat. I did not listen to them, and my cat completely recovered when I went to another much less expensive vet. The vets at AAVEC did not address my concerns and charged me a lot more than the vet that brought my cat back to health. In my opinion, the underlying issue had to do with the vets not paying enough attention to detail. Also, the people at the front desk were extremely rude. NEVER GO TO THIS CLINIC! read more

Our 6 year old lab was in a accident, he was in a lot of pain, couldn't walk, couldn't eat, no bowel or bladder control. The staff in the front of house and medical team were so kind and displayed so much compassion. They even let his 12 year old fur brother come visit in a private room. They gave my children time to say goodbye and were so respectful of all of their questions and concerns. Dr Amy and his primary tech I met with were so helpful, unfortunately there was no way to save my pup, I hope I am never in a situation like this again but I would trust them with any pet. read more

Absolutely heartwrenching, disgusting financially praying on the emotionally weak over their animals. Complete sales pitch - No heart, No Care. It's not about Medical it's about the dollar. Just like facilities for humans. They're not here to heal, they're here to treat, continue treating and make as much money as possible.. $200 emergency fee, then all these other overpriced charges on top. Everything is inflated due to "emergency" services. You look the medication up online it's literally a quarter of the cost to order. ... Given a total of $575.00 Then upon arriving back to check out my puppy, it's nearly $900 dollars total from the $575 given and it was apparently for two small syringes of fluids for a 16lbs Puppy. Unless your animal is literally dying, knocking on heavens door.. don't go here.. I am traveling from Baton Rouge to an East coast trip for a month. My 5 yr old 15 lb male Maltipoo service dog Harley stopped eating and drinking 36 hours ago. He became very lethargic and not moving or playing. I had to baby him to take water from my finger to start him to drink water. We tried several times to find a Vet and found Anne Aundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic. They took us in and immediately started to help us. This is a huge clinic. Not a small clinic. Very caring Receptionist then a vet tech and another tech. They explained everything to my satisfaction. Then I later had a consult before bloodwork. Results were good. They finally got Harley to eat chicken. I have been employed for over 10 years with 3M animal care and have had contact with over 1000 vets and 2 veterinary schools so I am speaking from experience. How do I give no stars? Don't get me wrong, the young vet that saw my cat was good. She told me what I was doing and I appreciatd her advice on the imaging I'd want to get. Once I was comfortable with the required imaging, she stopped. The diagnosis from the scan was lung cancer. I spoke with my primary vet the next day or two and we agreed on palliative care. So while I appreciated a follow up call from who I believe was the head vet to ask about my cat, the audacity of this man to call me a SECOND time to start suggesting biopsies to "know how fast the cancer is growing" was borderline unethical. I told him I was NOT going to put my soul cat through this from his first call to me, and had to hang up on him as he played on my fears. read more

But let me tell you if you get Vet Tech Kim and Vet Rosenbaum you will have won the lotto! While there is no doubt they have all of the quality vets to treat pretty much everything, they are in a different planet when it comes to "reasonable" expense to treat your pet. We have used them before with one of our rescue dogs which even several years ago was way too costly. We were given a "range" of cost depending upon length of stay and recovery. Even though we were able to get our dog early, they still charged us the "premium" cost. MOST IMPORTANTLY to you pet owners, I know how much you love your pets like we do, but when I took our dog Coco in to look at a possible tumor, they did in fact do a comprehensive eye exam proving the blindness was present in the left eye. That was a $500+ bill. SO......We were told to go ahead and get a CT Scan of the head region. At least we could then make a decision what to do if the tumor was aggressive. The cost to perform the scan at this place was....wait....$6,200.00+. Oh....forgot the blood work needed adding another $200+. I quickly went on-line and located a vet hospital call Jefferson Veterinary Hospital located right outside Frederick Maryland. https://www.jeffersonvethospital.com/ If you want to talk about compassionate and FAIR to the customer, this is your place. How funny it was for the staff to hate to tell me what my bill was for the CT scan. Get ready.....$2,300.00 which INCLUDED the blood work!!! I informed them that driving Coco there saved my family over $4,300.00. I should also note the Doctor and staff there was beyond great. Dr. Ahalt told me what the result of the scan was and what we should be thinking about to avoid any pain near term. Truly a super human being that really cared. He really felt bad for Coco to see such a horrible tumor. Sadly, we had to put our poor Coco to sleep last week as the tumor was so nasty. She became blind on both eyes and we knew we could not wait further. While Jefferson does not perform all of the services such as radiation/chemo, they do offer a full range of services for your pet. Bottom line is question everything from this practice. I honestly can not figure out the $4,300.00 difference for the exact same scan. Do your homework and establish a plan B if you are able. read more

I have waited more than a week to leave my review as I wanted to be fair and not write out of anger. My baby had been sick for a few days ... normal stuff was not worried until the 3rd day when he wasn't looking better. Was sent to this emergency vet as I was assured they were great. The staff was friendly upon arrival but that is where it ended. They took my dog (aka my baby) back quickly enough for triage and ranked him urgent. After they took him back it was within the hour that a vet came out to inform me he would need a full workup to figure out what was wrong and I would need to make a 1500 deposit to get started. I am sorry but if you are an emergency vet and actually care about the animals it is my belief you start working on an urgent case before you worry about money. Not expecting this visit at all I was not prepared to make that kind of deposit. The receptionist then tried to convince me to apply for a loan which I knew would not go through as I am in the middle of a divorce and a bit low on cash. I was then told to go home and find someone to borrow from. It is now 9pm. I did as told as my baby was waiting. I found someone that could give me the money in the morning. When they called back I was told they were keeping him comfortable until I paid... what ??? SO I informed I would have the money in the morning at which time I was told to come pick up my pet and bring him back when I had the money. At midnight I was bringing my baby home to "wait" till morning. My "son" passed away at 6am. Not to say they could have saved him (will never know).The complete lack of compassion makes me sick. Apparently they only help the high end clients that can pay any amount right away. I would never ever consider taking any of my babies here nor would I recommend anyone ever. read more

Dr. Castro was not only incredibly competent, but compassionate and clear. The facility is clean and beautiful. We are grateful to the entire staff for their professionalism combined with kindness. If you find yourself in need of emergency veterinary care, please look to this clinic without hesitation. I brought my pet to this hospital for a possible infection from a toe injury that has been known to cause bone infection. I could not get an emergency visit through my vet. There people were rude and not compassionate AT ALL. I don't even want to leave my dog here with these people anymore.... By the time I left, the doctor spoke to me and my anxiety lessened. I couldn't get anyone to talk to me, nor listen to me as she was being taken away from me to be cared for, so once I spoke to the doctor, I had calmed some. When the tech returned with my baby, my experience improved but did not take away from the fact that I was in a panic from the moment she left me until the doctor called. Recently moved to Maryland and i can say this is the best place i could have brought my dog. I Had to rush my 10 year old beagle in due to her having trouble breathing and they took her back right away and gave such great care. The techs, front desk and the vet were so amazing and i knew she was being treated wonderfully because everyone couldn't stop complimenting me on how sweet and loving she was. I have been to other emergency vet's in the past, but had never been to this one until last week. We took our dog to his normal vet due to lethargy and not eating, and they told us to rush him to this specific clinic because his blood platelet count was critically low. The first vet to see him at this clinic tried to tell us the initial diagnosis our regular vet gave was incorrect and that our dog was not in the critical danger our vet told us he was. Upon running the tests again, they realized he was indeed gravely ill; however the same vet told us that there was a good possibility of him recovering and that we should pay to treat him. The next evening, we get a call from the lead vet that actually originally opened the facility, Dr Tom Kozek. He thoroughly explained everything that was going on with our pup and was so so compassionate as he told us our best option was to euthanize our baby or bring him home for a few final days. You could literally feel the compassion and love this man has for animals through the phone. We arrived back at the clinic to be with our boy as he was put down, and Dr Kozek was patient and gave us the time we needed to say goodbye to our pet. Finally, as if I wasn't already incredibly impressed and appreciative of the experience we had with Dr Kozek, he then mailed us a handwritten card expressing his sympathy for our loss. Having an emergency situation with your pet is not fun. Needing to euthanize your pet is not fun. Your pet not surviving treatment is not fun. But if you have to go through any of these things, you want to do it at a place where you can feel like your money is not just being taken, but that the doctors working on your fur baby actually CARE about you, your pet, and what is going on. read more

Emergency vet doesn't mean being seen like it's an emergency. Emergency means open 24/7. We brought our dog in at 6:30 and were still waiting for a doctor 3 hours later. Just understand that you will be waiting a few hours to be seen. read more

This is an elite Veterinary clinic in the Annapolis area. They have literally saved our baby Havanese life twice. How could I not award it 5 stars? The first time was last 4th of July when she accidentally ate an entire box of DCON mice poison at my parents house. I was freaking out but they remained calm and once I arrived, had her cleaned up and cleaned out within 90 minutes. It cost less than $200 as well. We were very fortunate they were open and so close, because time is critical in that scenario with poison. The most recent time was a few days ago. Our dog had some type of virus or ate something that made her really sick. We don't have poisons around the house, but she was vomiting and ill for 3 days. Our primary vet can only do so much with their facility, but after 3 days of not eating, they referred us to the AAVEC. She was released the next evening and is almost back to normal. The price on our second visit was much higher than the first and they required a deposit before leaving Kendall over night. The ultimate charge was less than their estimate and deposit, so they ended up returning money to me, which was nice. The place is huge, with very nice landscaping and sitting areas outside. The lobby is very large and well lit with natural light from outdoors. There are multiple specialties in this facility, things I didn't even know were available to pets - eye care is one of them! We were able to see the back area to say goodnight to our baby. It was very impressive, clean and very high-tech. This is a referral only veterinarian, so if you are walking in that door, you are going to pay a minimum $80 emergency office visit fee. Ouch. Pets are expensive, don't own them if you can't afford them, right? read more

We took my very loved orange tabby to this emergency vet for the first time - he was suffering and had unfortunately passed on the way to the clinic (but we didn't know yet). The staff were quick, responsive, and so so kind as soon as we stepped in the facility. Afterwards, we were given all of the patience as they delivered options to us and we were able to stay with our pet / use their facilities for as long as we needed. We had to take our dog to the ER this week. He was in critical condition (likely had a brain tumor). We interacted with 3 different veterinarians over the time he was at the facility and they were each extremely compassionate, patient, and informative. They regularly called us with updates throughout the middle of the night (our request.) They then ultimately helped us make the difficult decision to put our dog down and did so with such care and kindness. If I have to go through this situation again, I'd certainly go back here. read more

Brought my dog in over the weekend because he was not walking. The vet took X-rays and told me nothing was broken but it looked like nodules on his lung's probably cancer. They couldn't be sure unless they sent the X-ray to a radiologist. They recommended palliative care. I followed up with my regular vet who looked at the same X-rays...no nodules on the lungs. He suffered some type of trauma in his back. Recommended rest, calm environment and anti inflammatory with pain meds. I spent the entire weekend crying believing my dog was dying. read more

I really feel like I should write two reviews here: one for cardiology and one for the general ER. The Cardiology Department is superb. Dr. Booth in particular was fantastic, and I really believe he gave my cat world class care. I suspect that the various specialists here are similarly amazing--unfortunately, one has to go through many hours of waiting and triage to see those specialists. The basic ER, on the other hand...Well, I have lost two cats there in the past three months. In both cases, I felt rushed when it came to making that final decision. In one of those cases, I actually called the day before the emergency, but the cat was only showing vague symptoms (but he was a cardiac patient who was refusing his meds), and the person I spoke to on the phone said that there would be at least a 12 hour wait. I wish she had taken his situation more seriously and suggested another ER to go to at that point. If she had done that, I would have gone to another ER, but because his symptoms did not yet rise to the level of an emergency for her, I felt dismissed as though I was just being a hypochondriac pet parent. Twelve hours later, my cat developed a saddle thrombus. We got him there within 30 minutes of the initial symptoms, but it seemed that the doctor did not want to consider trying to treat him at all and just "strongly recommended euthanasia." In short, the ER feels understaffed and overworked, and I think this can possibly lead a pet parent to the conclusion that the people who work there lack compassion and don't have the time to consider alternative options. I wish my cat with FATE had been offered at least one life-saving option (some type of heparin, maybe?), as the saddle thrombus had settled in just 30 minutes before. Maybe just hearing one's 11yo cat cry out in pain like that was so traumatic that I didn't think to challenge or interrogate the statement, "I strongly recommend euthanasia," but I do wish that we had been offered more of a choice at the end--maybe just one more potentially life-saving option to try. I would have paid quite a lot for that one more option--even if it failed. I will probably be back to see the specialists here, but I may try another 24 hr veterinary ER in the future--even if I have to drive into DC. Staff shortages and long waits can feel like a lack of empathy to pet parents, as can a rush to euthanize.
