I've got a skittish deaf Great Pyrenees mix and the staff are always patient with her while she shakes and tries to hide during her appointments. We've been in for a week visit for her and our cat, and had to come in during an emergency when our dog chased off a fox and got bit. (Doctors are scarier than foxes apparently :). Despite the cost. It is very nice to have an emergency SMALL animal vet in this area. AAVEC will not see smalls and most regular exotic vets are booked solid. They got my rat in immediately, kept me updated all day on her status and sent photos. She had to have surgery so I knew it was going to be expensive. All vets charge an emergency fee if they have to get you in unscheduled. And it is even more for a true emergency vet. Not all vets are warm and fuzzy, all I care about is do they know the animals they are treating. They do! Very through exam and questions. Sleep easier knowing they are available if needed. I have cats. Guinea pigs, rats, hamster and had a dog. I also handled all the smalls at a rescue( exams and medical) , so I know my stuff and know vets. read more

Absolute cash grab, my dog had an ear infection, its not uncommon for his breed unfortunately. I was forced to go to this place due to lack of openings elsewhere. They proceeded to do every unnecessary test you could possibly imagine on my dog, after I waited an hour and a half in my car with him. While in the waiting room the doctor told me I have the most depressed dog she has ever seen (Probably because he has an ear infection and we sat in the car waiting for an hour and a half). My bill was well over 3000 dollars. Should have a been a 250 dollar visit max. But its okay, ill just never go back and hopefully you wont get abused by this facility either. read more

If I could leave a less than one review I would. We didn't know we came in the wrong door of the facility (door was unlocked) and was never told until the vet/owner told us. We drove an hour for service to be refused. We were sat in a room that was locked from the inside but a side door that could be open to the outside. The technician sat us in a room and was caring for our pet and said she would let the receptionist know we had arrived. When the receptionist/manager came in later she must have been having a bad day. She opened the door and said abruptly have you been working on the paperwork on your phone. She could have started the conversation with Hello/Hi or even How is your day. Not only her conversation with us but her body language was aggressive. She said we cannot treat your pet until this is done and the $256 payment is paid. I had already filled out one paper/form on my phone for my daughter who was so upset about her pet being sick. I was on the second portion and I explained I was stuck on one part and showed her my phone she took my phone and did the selection herself and said that is all that was needed. She kept saying we cannot treat your pet until the $256 was paid. So my daughter handed the secretary/receptionist/manager her credit card which she could have ran at anytime but she went running to the vet to tell the vet that I was rude to her for asking who was her supervisor and asking questions about their form. I told her I was a very detailed person and I wanted to answer the questions right from the start. I definitely didn't feel the warm customer service from her. She said her supervisor was the vet but she was the manager. The vet came in with our pet and immediately said that she didn't feel she could treat our pet because we came in the wrong door and didn't like the interaction between myself and her receptionist/manager. She said when things start out this way things don't get any better and refused service and told us to go somewhere else. She never once asked my daughter and I our version of what happened. I told her I would leave and have my daughter there with her payment/cards and she said no. When getting ready to leave I then looked and she was recording our conversation without my permission or knowledge before that time. I begged her to take care of my daughter's pet and she said no. She made us feel like it was my fault for the lack of care for my daughter's pet when she then told my daughter she would have referred us elsewhere anyways. It was more than they could have done in their facility. Please be aware of this facility. Customer service is key in my eyes and the reception/secretary/manager I found to be aggressive and rude which put me on the defensive. The vet should protect her staff but also listen to her pet parents and at least hear them out about what happened. We are so sorry we came in the back door but no one said anything and even sat us in a room and the technician started weighing our pet and caring. If you don't want people to walk in your back door of the establishment then lock it. I do have to give the technicians that took care of our pet a pat on the back for their care. The Secretary/Receptionist/Manager and the Vet/Owner not at all. 6/18/2025 The response from the vet owner of Happy Tails has responded to this review and has not address the problem with her staff or even said she was sorry for anything. Be wary of this establishment. She believes her staff did nothing wrong. She believes I was a threat to her staff which is so untrue on all levels if anything I felt her receptionist was rude and aggressive to me. I was sitting in a chair in the care area and the receptionist was standing at the door and came in front of me. I never once left my chair when the receptionist was in the room. All the vet/owner would have had to do was heard my daughter and I out and said she would speak to her receptionist but that has not happened. Even after the review. If the vet/owner read the whole review the receptionist had my daughter's credit card and in no way, were we evading payment for our daughter's pet. I do have an issue with this statement. How is that evading payment? My daughter and I even discussed why no one came to get the payment. Also, she has taken my whole review of her establishment and took the review to mean walking in a wrong door. Please read all the reviews before visiting. I wish I did. Also recording a conversation without the knowledge of all parties is wrong. I never once threatened anyone in her establishment. If asking the name of a supervisor and her name is a threat for treating me like I was dumb because I had questions about the establishments forms and her staff messing up, then I was right in saying I wouldn't refer her to anyone. I don't know that I've come across a veterinary clinic that displays less enthusiasm for caring for pets. Certain members of the staff are rude and their faces totally reveal what they are thinking: they'd rather not have to be bothered with you. Don't dare mention the possibility of asking the vet a question or voicing a concern if you are there for only a "technician appointment." I did snag the vet once and asked a quick question that only required a quick answer. The whole exchange to about 30 seconds. Imagine my surprise when I got to the checkout desk and realized my appointment had now been changed to a "doctor appointment" and my charge due that day increased substantially. No Saturday hours, and when they have staff training or a staff meeting you better go somewhere else. They actually advertise they lock the doors when that happens (during regular business hours) and they won't answer the phone. read more

This vet is a cash grab. Really sad to have to write this review but unfortunately it has come to this. The last straw was when we took the dog in, the vet checked for fleas WITH a flea comb, and said that the flea dirt on him was just dirt from outside. 2 weeks later, I find a flea infestation on my dog. I place an order for nexguard flea prevention chewables on chewy, and happy tails declines it within 20 minutes saying we need to come in and get it from them. The whole family has covid, and we can't come in. They want the money, i don't care what they tell you. I took my other dog to another vet and they signed off with no problem. We have been loyal to this vet for years and they have drained us of money. DO not go here, there is a VCA down the street. read more

I took my dog here because she had not ate or drank water in several days and just seemed sick. I was really concerned so I took her here to be seen immediately. Long story short they repeatedly stated that I had "financial concerns" because I wouldn't agree to additional tests after paying 1300 and not yet receiving results from the tests they already took samples for. Despite me literally being in tears when talking to the vet after she implied that my dog would die if I couldn't afford a $13,000 surgery for a colon blockage (that I later found out she didn't even have) they continued to try to upsell me. Despite 3 different staff members commenting on my "financial concerns" they still felt it was appropriate to take advantage of my vulnerability to try to guilt me into paying for expensive and unnecessary tests and treatment. They make you submit a credit card and a 65 dollar deposit before you schedule an appointment. That is very disappointing. The person answering the phone was nice but not very clear. The office manager was not nice at all. Answered the phone on speaker and spoke to me on speaker phone which is poor office etiquette. Don't make it to schedule an appointment but the payment prior to appointment makes me think that they really don't care about the animals just your fee. I'll go somewhere else. read more

We had been pretty pleased with the staff and level of care offered at Happy Tails. My husband took our pup in today for her 1 year appointment only to find out the had cancelled our wellness plan without notifying us. They handed him a bill for over $400 for services covered by the wellness plan we are on. Why not tell us when we made the appointment? He took the day off, lost pay, to show up for an appointment that they tried to charge him for when it all should have been covered. They wouldn't even give him the monthly flea/heart worm. Very poor way to treat your customers! We won't be back. read more

I pity the staff at this establishment. While the technicians and receptionists are bright and welcoming, the vet is very rude, unprofessional, and extremely biased. They need to learn how to whisper seeing that their walls are very thin. I did not see the black female they were discussing while in another room with my animal but I heard each and every last disgusting word spoken by Vera Calpeno and another staff member. We switched to Happy Tails when our vet moved to the practice. She left shortly after she arrived. Our first experience after she left was very disappointing to say the least. We will be finding another vet and do not recommend this practice to anyone. read more

Exotic vets are non-existent in the Annapolis area but somehow I found Happy Tails and I'm so glad I did. I used to take my chickens all the way to Westminster to get seen and it's comforting knowing there's someone a lot closer. My rooster was very cold, pale and lethargic and he was on death's door. I called desperately on a Friday- they don't take appts on Fridays and I was so afraid my roo wouldn't make it but but Dr. Vera took him in anyways. It was $254 after an emergency visit and meds but he is thriving 2 weeks later and I am so pleased! He crowed for the first time in weeks and his color and behavior are so much better. My Clutchers got sick very suddenly, Happy Tails was the first place I personally called as it was close to my house. My boy had never been to this facility and these girls didn't know me from Adam... but they treated us with such empathy and compassion. Unfortunately, the first time they got to meet my old pup was the last time, as I had to put him down. The staff here couldn't have been any better and I can't thank them enough for absolutely everything. Even with this COVID19 going on they still treated my dog and my family like we had been going there for years. I can't say I'll ever get another dog because I could never replace Clutch... but I will speak of this veterinary hospital in the highest respects!! Thank you guys again for everything! read more

I have had several vet's in the last 10 years and I can not say enough good things about this one, not only the doctor but the entire staff. Thanks to the entire staff I know I will have my fur babies around for many years to come. The quality of life my dogs experience since starting with happy tails is amazing. My 10 year old male is acting like a puppy again and I couldn't be happier!!!!! They looked at my dogs holistically and not just as another patient to push thru the door. They always take their time and explain what they are doing and why. They schedule appointments so my smaller dogs are not met in the lobby by a larger rambunctious puppy or a pet that really doesn't like other dogs. I went to an interview, the doctor was so rude and the place smelled horrible and said I was unqualified and was late to the interview and she said I wasted her time and yelled at me when I didn't bring a new resume when her receptionist said I didn't need to bring one. We have brought my dogs here since the week we got the first one. I am very pleased with their services and am very sad to be moving to another state. The staff here was absolutely great and really cared about our dogs. Our older pup, Louie had to go in a few times when he was a puppy and they were always so great with him and working with my work schedule. I was even able to drop him off for the day and come back later to get him. I was thinking he would be in the back in a crate but he was walking around kissing all the girls in the back when I got there! When he was fixed I walked in to see him cuddled up in blankets at the feet of the receptionist. Vera is always extremely helpful and happy to see our dogs. I will really miss this place! read more

Well I have been driving by Happy Tails for 5 years now and wished I could see Dr Calpeno but I am loyal to my other veterinarian. On Monday I had an emergency with one of my cats who had intestinal problems since Saturday. I decided to call and see if I could get an appointment. So glad I did. My poor gatito has been ill for quite some time and didn't know it. She is getting the care she needs and thanks to Dr Calpeno I will hopefully have her for a long time. The staff are also amazing. Originally I like our first visits a year ago. The Dr is nice and so is the staff, a bit pricey for the services you receive lately. From the last couple of visits I saw that the registered tech she had is not there and it took 3 people to draw blood. The tech assistants are nice but not at all experienced. I stopped by on a Tuesday, I gathered it was Surgery Day and it was utter chaos and the Dr. was speaking very demeaning to her staff. After seeing this we decided to have our dogs spay done elsewhere, we saved money and our dog wasn't put in that chaos. Lastly at our last visit she recommended several tests to be done on our pet that would costs close to 600 dollars, with no guarantees that we would get out answers and when we decided against it, her attitude changed and she started talking down to us. That was it for my husband and niece we politely listened but when we left, he said we will not be going back, All in all she seems to be a good doctor, but her manner with the staff and clients is not what one would expect. read more

The best vet experience I've ever had. They were very accommodating. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly. The veterinarian was very sweet and did very well at making my extremely anxious dog feel comfortable. She also made recommendations according to what was most cost effective for us.
