Had an attack of epididymitis (inflammation of the tubes behind testicles where sperm accumulates) in August 2022. I went to see Dr Xiaolong Shawn Liu, M.D. for a second opinion, and to get insight into restarting exercise and using Traditional Chinese Medicine. The initial urologist I had seen told me to stop all exercise, but when I asked about how/when to restart exercises said that was out of their scope of practice. Meanwhile the chronic pain and discomfort were affecting my sleep, mood and daily life. The scientific literature says that the prognosis in chronic patients is unclear and that the average patient chronic epididymitis sees 4.5 different urologists while seeking a cure. Dr Liu reviewed my case file, ultrasound report, did a manual exam, and answered my questions. He was honest that two months of chronic inflammation was not at all unusual. Gave me advice about restarting physical activity (pace yourself, start very slowly and not at same intensity that you were before being sick, continue to wear compression shorts). In the meantime I had set up an appointment with a Chinese acupuncturist, (Wendy Li @ Acupuncture Herbs and Beyond) and after single visit had an impressive relief of pain for the first time in three months after getting acupuncture and taking the Chinese herbs prescribed for me. A concern when doing alternative medicine is that you could be ignoring real pathology. Dr.Liu explained that while it could not be explained by western medicine, TCM was successful for some people, the Chinese are very pragmatic people, have been doing TCM for thousands of years, and if it didn't work they would be doing something else. He said that there was no serious pathology that would preclude me from continuing with TCM treatment, and that if this didn't resolve in a years time, to come back to discuss potential surgery such as nerve blocks. So Dr. Liu knows his stuff and I was able to get an appointment within two weeks. (As for my case I continued with weekly visits for TCM for the next month and the pain and swelling subsided nicely over next three weeks.) read more

Hyannis location. My experience is subjective. The doctor wasn't bad. Not the greatest, but right on money. Front desk staff, however, that's a whole other thing. Some are borderline rude, some just don't care. Like, I've never seen follow up appointment that wasn't free. Not here. Do not expect them to volunteer that info though. I was like, ok, if I spent this long in some medical school, I'd want $180 for 5 minutes of my time too. OK. But getting records- good luck! For the services I paid for! They will be tossing you around until you get angry and take time off your work, the one that pays your bills, and march there and get it yourself. Meanwhile, with money this office charges for services, they don't even have electronic forms set up for patients' convenience! So, get lots of time, money, and patience, if you decide to come here. read more

Unfortunately, I have had the absolute worst experience with this practice and I still have ongoing issues. Lack of communication is the biggest issue. I had a large kidney stone that needed to be removed. Dr. Liu never explained my options but just told me that I needed a lithotripsy. (I learned later I could have opted for a stent). He never communicated that lithotripsies have a 20% failure rate. When my partner called the office (because I could not even speak) and communicated that I was in 10 out of 10 pain hours after the procedure, they told me to wait till they opened in the AM and to come in for an ultrasound. Had we listened, I might not have survived. I finally went to the ER where they found a six-stone blockage in my ureter which was pressing against my kidney and my kidney was three times the normal size. They admitted me and had to do immediate surgery to remove the blockage. Dr. Liu did this and put in a stent. Stent removal 7 days later was also awful. I called two days before to ask if I needed a ride home and he said no, it would be fine. They failed to communicate again that you can get spasms for hours that are so bad they feel like a kidney stone. I could barely keep the car on the road driving home and most definitely should not have driven. Then at my follow up, my kidney had not healed and was still swollen and enflamed. I asked about nutrition guidance to prevent this from happening again and instead of a conversation he shoved two pages of a printout from the Kidney Foundation website into my hands and never had a conversation with me about nutrition. When I told him my concerns with him and that we were having major communication issues, he laughed and said "to be fair, you did not present typically". Talk about gaslighting- like I could control my presentation. Now that I am trying to transfer to a new practice, they have failed to send my records despite two attempts to get them to do so. read more

I found out I had a malignant cyst in the veins and arteries of my right kidney. My oncologist recommended Dr. Liu of this practice. Dr. Liu wound up removing the kidney. He is very professional, but has a great personality and bedside manor. His follow up has been great through some issues with the remaining kidney. His staff is great and has been extremely helpful throughout this process. Since the operation July 9th, 2019 I have gotten healthier and healthier and am cancer free, back in the gym and eating great. I owe Dr. Liu and this practice my life and would recommend them to anyone. read more

I had a enlarged prostate back in October and it also affected everything in my body so after leaving the hospital Framingham they lined me up with Doctor Shawn Liu and as far as I'm concerned I'm so glad that they did do that for me because thanks to him I went through the prostate surgery back in January 2023. I had green light surgery on my prostate. I am back to my full health. Thanks to his care and also his staff also helped him if you're looking for someone cares about human beings, and you also want to take care of your health. Please see Doctor Liu and his staff because they are dynamite. When I went into the exam room, do you see that they have up on the wall human beings come first. I had a high PSA level today at the catheter and I thought it was cancerous and he said don't even worry about it so we kept me on this medication. I'm taking now so they did the test seven weeks later and he said I don't believe you have cancer whatsoever. Don't worry about it in the prostate well he called me after the test results were able to proceed with the surgery. It was so much better. He knew I did not have cancer. this man is amazing and as billy crystal used to say back in the 80s, he simply marvelous. He wants to help people so they can get better because he loves people and you can trust him! I told him when I first met him if you're not gonna be honest with me I want another urologist. Well Doctor Liu has been straight up with me. Thanks to him I'm back at the gym working out again. I had to see him in April, and everything has been improving my kidneys and everything else. Thanks to this man and all his talents that God has given him. This mean cares about his patients very much, so I would not trust anybody else, but Doctor Shawn Liu to take care of me. If he says not to worry about things, you can take his word for it and if you want a Doctor who does care about your health and your feelings then see Doctor Shawn, because he's dynamite. God has blessed me with a great urologist and I know this being a pastor I trust him. He also said to be Bob in good health. I was so scared about the PSA level being high and he said don't even worry about it. I don't believe you have prostate cancer whatsoever. The man knows his stuff that's all I can say about him. I had a kidney stone and was sent to Greater Boston Urology, I was set up with Dr Liu who said I had to go right away. The Minute I woke up form the surgery I had horrible pain, I specifically told him I was allergic to Percocet and he gave me percocet . He also put stents in both sides and I was in horrible pain. I went back to the office a few days later to have the stents removed , after I left I had the most horrible pain you can imagine, I thought I was having an Appendix attack that is how bad the pain was. My sister ended up calling the office and they said " oh its just spasms she is having. " They proceeded to give me more pain medicine with percocet in it when I told them I was allergic. I finally had to go to the ER for my pain. Forward to 3 months later I had a follow up ultrasound by my PCP and surprise the kidney stone was still there. I was referred to a different Urologist at a different practice and he was so wonderful to me. When I woke up from this surgery I felt 100% better. I was so scared to have another surgery and go through all that pain. Word to the wise, Do NOT go to Greater Boston Urology. The staff is rude and does not listen to your concerns at all !! Horrible Horrible experience and I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. read more
