Quarantined days has meant lots of bike rides for the kids. Usually when the kids bike with my husband I get stuff done around the house, but yesterday we thought a family bike ride would be fun. The dishes, laundry and cleaning could wait since it's not like anyone is coming into our house soon. ' I hopped on my trusty bike purchased from Green Bay Cycles in 2013. To be honest it's probably been used a dozen times since then so while old it's still in pretty good condition. However, we immediately realized that I had a flat tire so the kids set off for bike riding fun with their dad. I saw Green Bay Cycles is closed on Sundays right now, so I enjoyed a rare moment of peace and silence while unloading the dishwasher. They reopened today (Monday) and my husband brought in my bike in his typical quarantine uniform (comfortable clothes, mask and gloves). They took the bike for him, fixed my tire, tuned it up and sprayed it with disinfectant spray. It didn't take them long at all and they were super sweet not to charge us for it either. My husband said he felt completely safe with the experience and will continue to go there for our biking needs during quarantine...and of course after. read more

Stopped in to this shop looking for a pre-owned woman's bike. Haven't been on a bike in decades (other than a Stationary bike at the gym) and wasn't sure I needed a brand new purchase. Pam spotted me (I must've looked like a deer in the headlights). Chatted about my thoughts and was told they didn't have any used bikes. They barely had any new bike inventory. But just as I was about to leave one of her guys rolled a brand new bike onto the floor which had just been assembled. She explained that it was a comfort type bike with a shock absorber in the seat and the front handlebars - made specifically for women. This intrigued me. She suggested I take it outside for a ride which I did. I knew I really wanted to have a bicycle and needed a little nudge. Also knew I did not want to purchase one at target or Walmart. Happy I stumbled upon this family owned shop. Also: The shop offers free delivery as it would've been hard to get that bike into my Volkswagen beetle. Amazing people, great shop to buy a starter bike. They have a solid assortment in the store, reasonable prices considering the North Shore and Winnetka location, and they are very nice, very knowledgeable, and very helpful. They really make it easy to choose and purchase a bike, and they even have free delivery of the bike, in the case that the bike is a gift, which it was in my case. In the case this bike isn't exactly what the recipient wanted, they even offered for us to bring it back so we could get credit towards another bike, assuming it hasn't been ridden. Delivery was better than expected - they delivered it out back, without a reminder that it was a surprise. They also left the bike when I couldn't get there right in time, but still said hello and thanks as they passed by, so no awkward question of whether they expect a tip for delivery. I'll give more feedback, the more that experiences I've had with them, but so far, so GREAT! read more

Went to this shop after hearing they were having a back-to-school sale. I ended up buying a bike from them and I had an issue with the factory-installed crankset. They were really good about diagnosing the problem and providing me with a viable solution. The owner Larry was really helpful in replacing the crankset and did it while I waited. Both he and his wife Pam were extremely courteous and were really interested in solving the problem to get me back on the trail. They also have a great trail to test ride your bike a short distance away, the Green Bay Trail. This shop epitomizes what a small shop can do that a larger chain often lacks, a high level of individualized customer service. I highly recommend this bike shop! read more

This shop has the the friendliest and most helpful owners I've come across in ages. I needed a bike box because I was going on a trip and didn't want to purchase a hard case. Called around to see who had boxes they were throwing away and GBC was the first store to oblige. They were just so helpful about an item they weren't making any money from and it surprised me frankly. I will be stopping through there the next time I need any supplies. read more

These guys are terrific. I had three bikes that hadn't been ridden in over 10 years. One was an old Schwinn tandem and the other two were expensive mountain bikes. Not only did they give me an unbelievable price to refurbish all three (Under $600), they came and picked all three bikes up and then dropped them off. The entire process took less than ten days. You should see the job they did on my bikes. Credible, dependable and all with a friendly face and smile. It's nice to know there are merchants out there that still give you a fair shake even though we live up here n the North shore. Don't bother going anywhere else. read more

Twice I've needed quick service, once while I was on the road, and once when I really wanted to get my newly powder-coated back back on the road. The first time, in 2018, I needed a bottom bracket adjustment. The 2nd time, today, I couldn't get the adjustable cup of my bottom bracket threaded on in rebuilding my bike. The adjustment in 2018 still held when I took my bike apart 3 weeks ago for powder-coating. Larry's experience came up with a solution to the adjustable cup problem for my 47 year old frame. Because of the state of the frame, the normal fixes just wouldn't work. The folks at this shop are highly experienced, which really counts when service is required. They have a wide range of highly recommendable bikes and accessories. I don't do a lot of business with bike shops, since I do my own maintenance when possible, but if I get a new bike, I'll go to Green Bay first, and if I need service I can't do myself, I'll just go to Green Bay. read more

I brought my 30 year old single speed road bike in to Alberto's in HP to get the bottom bracket fixed and they wanted $75 bucks just to look at it and estimated $75-$125 to fix it. So I shopped around. I found this place during a ride through winnetka by chance when chain kept failing off. Cool guy who owns it, Larry (used to work at Alberto's) looked at for free on the spot and estimated $50 bucks to fix it. I then asked him to true my front wheel and tighten the brakes. He said to bring it in on the following Tuesday, but still shortened my chain so I could bike back to HP right then for free When I brought it in on Tues he thought it'd be ready by Thursday. I got a call a few hours later and the bike was ready. Total charge was $52 dollars!!!! I'll be taking my bicycles to Larry from now on. Arrivederci, Alberto! read more

I had been shopping for a nice racing bike for myself for some time. I wanted a cyclocross because of its all around speed, agility, and usefulness for trails and pavement. Unfortunately, most other bike shops I visited wanted to push me into a men's bike leaving me disappointed with the fit and uncomfortable geometry. Then I stopped in at Green Bay Cycles and met Pam, one of the shop owners. Not only was Pam knowledgeable, but she also had a women's 2013 Giant TCX W Cyclocross in the shop, ready to go. They really seem to understand that for women cyclists, a men's bike might fit you, if you're lucky, but it really wasn't designed for you. I immediately fell in love with the TCX. It's a fantastic zippy ride and... it fit me!! The nice people at Green Bay Cycles were very accommodating. The bike was given its final adjustments to my size, accessorized and was ready to go in record time. In terms of price, GBC was reasonable. Their staff gave excellent advice and shared their expertise without any cycling snobbery. Just really nice folks who know their bikes. Green Bay Cycles has gained a customer and a fan. read more

Always get my road bike tuned up at the shop and they do a teriffic job. I started talking to Larry late in the summer about fat bikes. He told me he had some coming in late October or November. I got some great info from Larry and Pam about a number of bikes I had been reading about. After listening to me ramble on about a number of different models and what I was looking for in a fat bike Larry and Pam recommended an Otso Voytec without hesitation--just picked it up a few days ago and this bike is more fun then I could have have ever imagined---looking forward to to a very adventurous winter riding outside! This shop is simply the best. The owner and the staff, make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the store. I just started serious riding this year and didn't even know the difference between a schrader and a presta valve. They have taken the time to teach me to maintain a bike that I did not even buy there. Half the time I go in for an adjustment, they just charge me for parts and don't even charge for their labor. When I buy my next bike, there is no question where I will get it from. Now I send everyone I know there for their bikes and parts. As a side note despite being located smack dab in the middle of the north shore, their prices are very competitive even compared with the sporting goods superstores with no service and bikes made on the other side of the world. I bought my bike here about 3 years ago and have been in and out a few times during that time. Recently was hit by car and took my bike back to Green Bay Cycles to get it checked out. From a COVID standpoint, I felt completely safe. Everyone was wearing masks and customers were distancing themselves. They did a thorough check and got back to me in a couple days. Larry was up front about what was wrong and what needed to be replaced. Had the bike back in a week and it's better than ever with a sweet new wheelset. Bike store with attitude! I understand that the retail environment is super tricky during these days of COVID. Nevertheless, I think it's worth sharing this feedback for the owners of this place. There was no line outside the door, no signs about any protocols, and an open door. So I walked in with a mask on holding a punctured tube to get a replacement. I was shouted out of the store. Two stories. Story #1 I was riding last week on the perfect day, and wham! Side wall of my rear tire blew out. Beyond repair. I called three taxi companies..."we don't have any service there"..."we can get there in an hour..." etc. I called my LBS, Green Bay Cycles. Larry answered. "Can you recommend a taxi service? I need to get my bike to you to replace a blown out tire." "Where are you? Rodney will drive our truck to you. You don't need a taxi." Story #2 Riding the North Shore Century, my rear cassette shifter became "mushy" - to the point where shifting became risky. I went to see Green Bay Cycles the next day. "There is a Campagnolo dealer north of here. We will drive your bike there to have it fixed by the manufacturer." "Can I have it back by Wednesday - in two days?" "Sure." That afternoon, the same day that I brought my non-shifting bike in, Sam called to tell me my bike was ready to ride. You don't get service like this very often. I couldn't have had a better experience buying bikes from Green Bay Cycles. I came in late on a Friday and they built my bike so I could ride it home that night and had my wife's bike waiting to go the following morning. Larry, Sam and the entire staff were nothing but friendly and knowledgeable. I noticed their interactions with other customers while I was waiting and they treat everyone the same as if they are all friends or family in some way. On one of the first beautiful days of spring, after a very long and cold winter, I dusted off the bike and attempted a ride. It was quickly discovered that the tires needed air -- lots of air. My bike pump was nowhere to be found so I carefully cycled/walked the bike to the closest resource for air-- Green Bay Cycles. It was a Sunday and the shop closed at 4pm. I arrived at 4:03, just as the front door was being locked. A friendly employee, Rodney, didn't hesitate to open the door for me and, when I told him that my tires were low on air, he offered to fill them for me. Other employees in the store were equally friendly, even though it was now after-hours and they were preparing to go home. Rodney told me that filling tires is a free service offered by the store. Based on the friendly staff and what looks to be an excellent selection of bikes and equipment, I'll soon return to this shop. read more
