When my home was listed for sale I received a note from Green Donations estimating the value of personal property to be $50K-$70K and touting their ability provide formal appraisal. After inspector review the estimate became $35-$50K and asked for $1500 to conduct a thorough appraisal. I paid. Formal appraisal is $46.5K BUT!! the kicker is their warning that the IRS could reject that tax deduction without an acceptable cost basis. My cost for their helping me determine an acceptable basis is now an additional $2,000. Also lots of disclaimers if the IRS questions the basis including additional costs to me that I face from their attorney costs if I need their assistance dealing with the IRS. Our builder recommended Green Donation Consultants as we explored the idea of deconstruction in lieu of demolition for the new home we planned to build in Vienna. My wife and I had recently purchased a tear down, but liked the lot and location. We never knew we could donate the old materials for a tax benefit. Our decision to proceed with deconstruction was a no-brainer once we saw all the benefits; giving the material a second life, helping a local non-profit and the tax deduction. Beware!!!!! This company is a scam!!!! my husband and I used them last year with hopeful thoughts of a great tax benefit. We ended up loosing money, no one there would help me. The worst customer service I have ever seen. The inspector who came to home looked like he just woke up. The staff ill-mannered and was continually changing, my interactions with angela was never pleasant, a terrible experience Also, I was interacting with kelly or kelsy which was no better.i tried talking to my appraiser Diana, she would never take my calls.
