I'm embarrassed to admit hat we were negligent in caring for our inherited grandfather's grandfather clock. Haha. We moved it across country and didn't oil it at all for 6 years! Yes, that's dumb. We made an in home appointment with Sam who is friendly and respectful, wears shoe covers and a mask. He got right to work taking the works out and checking everything inside. Surprisingly the clock wasn't dirty but desperately needed oil. Delaying oiling it caused some minor wear on 2 gears. But he said it's not enough to need replacement or repair. I wouldn't have known the difference if he had said it did but he was honest. He oiled it, answered all my many questions as he worked and was done in 30 minutes. He asked if we would like to make an appointment for an oiling in 2 years! If you sign up for routine maintenance the price is discounted. And I need reminders! My friend had an appointment same day. Her clock needed some repairs but his estimate was way less than other clock repairs we've had done in the past. He is in great demand and has a few months wait for repairs to be completed but it'll be done right and with quality parts some of which he hand makes. read more

My husband and I have received a superb service by Sam's Clock Repair. Sam came to our house to check our grandfather's clock that belonged to my mother in-law, and the clock was not chiming nor was it keeping a time for quite some time. However, Sam brought it back to life for us and now the clock is ticking on time and chiming my favorite Westminster chime. Since we knew how old the mechanism or the heart of the clock, we were happy to have Sam get a new mechanism for our clock. Sam has an outstanding customer service, and he is very diligent about his work. Repairing a grandfather clock requires lots of patience and we don't have that nowadays. We trusted as he repaired the grandfather clock that belonged to my brother-in law. It's hard to find such an honest clock repair and we defiantly recommend his business. I inherited a floor clock from my father and moved it to my house. The chimes weren't working, nor the moon phase and the second hand was missing. I called Sam and he came out the next day. Sam was accommodating on the time, prompt, friendly and courteous. Sam assessed the situation, fixed the moon phase by trimming down some gears so they would properly mesh. He replaced the missing second hand and to my amazement calibrated the clock to the exact number of beats it is supposed to have. The clock works perfectly now and keeps excellent time. I've setup a standard maintenance schedule with Sam to keep the clock on good working order. Highly recommend Sam's work. read more

Two separate and distinct examples will justify my rating: (1) I used this vendor to set up a Herschede Grandfather Clock which I had moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 2017. While there was initially no problem, within six months the clock had stopped chiming and eventually stopped altogether. I called Sam's Clock Repair back and he "fixed" the problem but said that it needed a complete overhaul which would necessitate moving it to his shop and a potential cost of c. $2,000. I noted that I had had a complete refurbishment done in Pennsylvania in July 2017 which cost over $2,800. His response was that the overhaul was necessary and that the current "fix" would be temporary. It was very temporary and the clock stopped within two days. Charge: $225 I called another repair shop and the technician fixed the clock by making adjustments to the mechanisms behind the clock face -- no need for a major repair. The repair took less than twenty minutes. (2) Earlier, I had left a Waltham desk clock with Sam's for repair. He had a minimum charge of $350. After a year and a half, he said it was fixed, but when I picked it up, it gained six minutes per hour. I returned it to him and after several additional months, he told me that it was not a clock, but rather a pocket watch enclosed within a brass ship's wheel and he could not fix it. The only saving grace was that he refunded my payment. Update: "In terms of the $225 service call for the Tubular Herschede granfather clock, it was only for the setup which we performed"; actually, there was a $225 charge for installation (paid by check on 11/13/18) and an additional $225 charge for service (paid by credit card on 06/03/19). The vendor states that I never contacted him to say that the repair was not working; he had stated at the time that any further repair would necessitate moving it to his shop for a detailed refurbishment -- a repair which would have been unnecessary! He did apologize for the delay with the Waltham watch, but claimed that it was due to Covid. I can agree that this would have been true for a six month period, but this does not account for the additional year he had it in his possession. read more

We took our 50 year old Cuckoo Clock to Sam for repair so that we could present it to our daughter for her birthday. We purchased it in Germany, so it held many wonderful memories for us. Sam was very knowledgeable about cuckoo clocks. He took the time to explain the mechanism & the repairs needed. He had many clocks to repair, but because he knew this was for our daughter's birthday, he made a special effort to complete it before that day. Our daughter was thrilled. I'd like to take a moment to review the 5 star service I received. I brought an old piece of junk Cuckoo Clock to Sam's shop. It used to hang on my grandparent wall and as a kid I would get yelled at for pulling the chains. My uncle passed away and it was found in their basement. I brought it to the shop and Sam looked at it and said the parts were all worn out and couldn't be fixed. After telling him the story and it was a sentimental piece he said he would try and fix it, but would take time. Couple of months later I received a surprise call that the clock was fixed and it was ready to be picked up. Not sure why this clock means so much to me, but now I get to enjoy it for many years to come. Thank you!! read more

Sam has worked on two of our clocks. A Chelsea clock that just stopped. He fixed the problem and cleaned and oiled the clock while I waited. I called him when our grandfather clock just stopped running after about 35 years. He told me the works had worn out. Getting new works or repairing the old was about the same amount of money, but the new works came with a warranty. Unfortunately the clock works factory, in Germany, had gone out of business and sold the rights to another German clock works manufacturing company. The first works they sent was totally wrong. The second works was very close but made for a longer pendulum. Sam had to make a special piece to get the clock to run at the correct time. This took several tries, but in the end, his skill paid off and our clock runs perfectly. read more

Sam is an expert horologist. He treated my parent's fine clock with the care and finesse deserving of a fine timepiece. He not only sells and repairs but he also buys fine clocks. He quickly diagnosed and made a minor repair and the Chelsea clock now runs like a charm, pun intended. read more

Excellent service, reasonable price for repair of old cuckoo clock.

My 15-year-old grandfather clock needed maintenance and began stopping during the night. Sam came out to my house on a house call and went right to work on my Hermle movement. He discovered I was not thoroughly oiling all bushings and probably hadn't oiled an important bearing in the last 10 years, resulting in excessive wear. I will soon have to procure a new movement. Sam emphasized the importance of regular cleaning and lubrication with the correct oils. In just a few minutes he was able to lubricate, reassemble and tune up the clock. It is running better than ever, despite the worn bushings. When replacement day comes I'll be calling Sam for sure. read more

Sam's Clock Repair is top notch. I have over the years used them to do in home grandfather clock tune up. Work was superb then and continues to be. Shop was recommended me by the Service Manager at Fort Belvoir Post Exchange many years. A most positive recommendation. Recently I visited the shop three separate times. One to fixed one of a pair of decorative clocks, second was to evaluate a watch that I used in Vietnam, and finally to make operational a decorative Seiko clock that I have set on fireplace mental for years, even though one part did not work. I all three separate cases my expectations were met with technical skill, outstanding customer, and very reasonable cost. I drive over 80 miles around trip to have Sam work on my clocks, and to be rather frank, "I would not even consider, based on the service that I have received over the years of going any place else for similar service even though they might be closer."
