A positive affirmation that we all need to remind ourselves more often than you'd realize and on this day I am focused to clear some unused items that I did in just minutes and dropped them off for donation at a neighborhood Goodwill. The positive feeling to reduce the stress of decluttering and making a space for myself to relax and enjoy it with moments to do what I enjoy and to donate them hoping it will go to someone who needs it. This Goodwill on Beretania is very convenient with a drive thru drop off and you're given a paper which you can claim in for your tax receipt though the feeling to help is always great and along with Goodwill we can make a difference. It's not too hard to get to, and once you get there, you drive in to their garage and there's a pull-through spot where you can stop and drop off your donations. Every time I've gone, there's been a worker there who responds quickly and comes over to my car with a rolling cart to help collect donations. They always ask me if I need a receipt for donation purposes. It's quick and simple and I don't have to do much more than unload my trunk. I've never been behind more than one car, and usually there's no line at all. Easy, helpful spot to donate your goods or to buy new-to-you items.

We left Weinberg after 2 years and started renting a home in Pearl city and eventually we had our finances set well enough that in 2017 we bought our first home together. I was so ashamed to say that I lived here when I was in high school but looking back on it today as a grown man I have to say that IHS was an absolute blessing for me and my family. I was looking for a place where I could donate some of my belongings that could be of better use…read morethan just sitting in my closet and drawers being unused, but I wanted to make sure the donation would go directly to the people in need right here in Hawaii. And specifically, to women and children in need. Surprisingly, I couldn't find many places that fit these specifications till I came across the the Women's & Family Shelter, an emergency shelter from the Institute for Human Services (IHS). IHS is an independent, local 501c3 nonprofit organization that makes sure 100% of all donations stays in Hawaii. Drop off was really simple. The donation drop off area is open Monday thru Friday from 0800-1600. You can park your vehicle temporarily right in front of the garage while you offload your items. On their website, there are 5 different ways you can help: 1. Monetary Donation. A link is provided on the website for your convenience. This can be a one time donation or you can set up a monthly donation. 2. An In-Kind Donation. The donation center is located around the corner of IHS at the garage entrance on Kaamahu Place. On the website " Wish List" you can find a list of what type of items are in need. Items needed are gently used clothing (all types) household toiletries (even makeup), school items, food, baby related items to name a few. Basically just think of what you use and need and eat on a daily basis to give yourself an idea of what you could donate to help another person/child. 3. Planned Giving, such as bequests from an estate plan or will, real estate, personal property, etc. 4. Cooperate and foundation giving, such as scholarships, grants, direct donations, etc. 5. Volunteer. There are many different types of volunteer opportunities, such as tutoring children, kitchen help, serving meals, working at the health clinic, sorting donations, etc. There's an opportunity for everyone to give in whatever form you choose. So instead of letting your drawers, closet, garage, shoe rack, etc get cluttered with unused or unwanted items, why not give it back to the community to help another person or child out? Or if you're not ready to part with your treasures a monetary gift is always appreciated. Donating my belongings not only made my house much tidier, but I was also happy knowing my items had a 2nd life while helping to meet the needs of a person/child right here in Hawaii.

I like that Helping Hands is truly a nonprofit organization because they don't sell your donated goods to the people who need them. People can come get the goods for free at helping hands. Staff were always very friendly and helpful with unloading my car. They are also very good about giving me the tax write off forms. (Salvation Army has you go to a website to get tax form and I couldn't even create an account successfully on the website. Kept getting error message.) Helping hands drop off times are Monday to Friday from 11 AM to 2 PM so the drop off window is pretty limited.

I always refer my clients there to get free household goods such as bedding, pots and pans, dishes, etc. I always drop off my donations there. Every Christmas - they have Adopt A Family and I love seeing our clients get items they wouldn't be able to get for their family since it is so expensive living here in Hawaii. They also have the Ready To Learn program which gives students school supplies for the upcoming year. I've been blessed to have traveled to places that excite and gives me the option to shop and with that I try my best to not hold on to items that no longer gives me that purpose and create a lovely tote of donation hoping that it will find new home and purpose to someone else. This donation container is found at Kahala Mall you just need to go to the back side of the mall just below the Queens Urgent Care and there's always a staff there seven days a week happily take your items and is super convenient. Many folks are in need to have items for work, school or just to fill your home and know that every item has it's purpose as long it's useable so to parting with them not only saves it from unnecessarily being dumped but an affordable way to give. We were in the Kahala area and remembered that there's a small donation center in the covered parking lot by the theater wing of Kahala Mall. Located across the parking lot from Panda Express, it was a quick, convenient drop off. The friendly man asked if we needed a receipt... Yes, please! We will be back!

The store is FOR profit, but does donate some items to a non for profit. This location offers some unusual merchandise due to the international population in Hawaii. I found several interesting paintings and vintage Christmas decor. My daughter likes to find craft supplies for the kids. The prices have gone way up on some merchandise since my visit last year. The store is well organized with most of the inventory being clothing. The parking on the lower level is hard to come by, but there is plenty of parking in the upstairs parking garage. If you donate something, they will give you a coupon for 20% off. Also, on Tuesdays, seniors receive 30% off. I've never bought anything after several visits. Time would be better spent at the beach.

Especially if you are there when people are donating as donors will often block the every car in the small lot by parking in the middle and having volunteers help unload. The parking is one way which creates the problem. I strongly recommend parking on Young street to avoid getting blocked in. Hours are very limited. Now on to the good: - Friendly volunteers with good organizational skills. - Low prices for most items especially home goods and they also test the electronic home goods. - Lots of seasonal items and a fair amount of non seasonal arts and crafts. - Air conditioned. - Very central location for people who live in town and you can make this a thrift shop crawl as as Central Union's thrift shop is 1/4 of a mile away and Goodwill is 1/2 a mile away. - Tax deductible if you donate. So you may only have $20 in your pocket, but that is enough to walk out of here with plenty of quality goods.

21 November 2020…read more Donation season! On my walk this morning, I stopped by the drop box to check if there were hours posted; no hours are posted. However, it seems a new addition was made...an after hours drop box! I like that they added an after hours drop box (I think its new because I've gone in the past and there was not one before). Irregardless, it is only for small items and people still leave their larger items at the side of the container. When I went back to drop my items off, it seems the drop box was almost full because once I closed the hatch and open it to put in another bag, the first one was still there. I had to physically push it in with a little force. This indicates that either they haven't emptied it in a few days or there were a lot of donations in a short period! ‍ I wish they had hours posted. I think that would be more helpful and would deter people from leaving their items outside in the elements. While their intent to donate is good, leaving items on the outside just creates the potential for weather damage and the items becoming unusable! I do like donating to BB/BS though as they state that the profits from clothing donations or household goods donations go  toward funding the specialized mentoring programs for young people. The added after hours drop box is a convenient addition!!
