Cool bar to drink a beer/cider w friends after a morning of hiking. The bartender was very helpful and nice. She also has a sweet German Shepherd. Tables outdoors to enjoy the river view, and picnic tables on the side of the building.

Along the banks of the Dan River in Danbury, NC, a short drive down a bumpy dirt road, you will find the Green Heron. Dogs run off-leash, kayaks float by lazily on the river, and people can choose from one of 20 beers and 8 wines on tap, aided by the affable bartenders. It's as laid back as laid back gets, somewhat tempered by the heat, or perhaps things slow down because of the calming effect of the river. Located just 2 miles from the front gate of Hanging Rock State Park, its in the perfect location to stop by after a day of hiking or kayaking, or an easy destination drive from the Triad. (40 minutes from Winston-Salem, and 60 minutes from Greensboro.) They often have live music, but always have cold A/C on the inside, and great views of the river on the outside. It's tin roof, rusted. It's the Green Dragon on the Bywater. There is no phone reception here, no TV blaring sports or politics either. Leave your phone in the car, grab a locally brewed beer, and listen to the river, listen to your friends, listen to the hounds baying, listen to someone singing and playing guitar, or listen to your own thoughts as the river drifts slowly by. (Ok, so they do have free WiFi, but I STILL recommend leaving your phone in the car.)

There is so much they offer. As far as eating they have Breakfast (smoked salmon bagel!), hot if cold sandwiches (the Jezabel ham!), salads (green ones but I love chicken salad), specialty pizzas (Neapolitan Nod!), and charcuterie boards! Then there is an extensive selection of teas, espresso based drinks, and wines (white, red, or sparking). You can enjoy a glass or a bottle. I've been to my share of coffee shops where the espresso based drinks either tasted burned or were so sugary you feel a diabetic coma upcoming. Not so here. Theirs are perfection with perfect balance of strong and sweet if you like flavors. Then there's a rotating bit of seasonal syrups and house-curated drink options. My favorite is the atmosphere. Couches and comfy large armed chairs, great art, tables outside, what's not to love? The owners take such pride in their shop. They keep it clean, always have a smile and kind word, and make sure their staff has that same spirit. This places puts the best out there for Danville.

The breakfast menu did not have much for me, but I was happy that I settled on a texturally intriguing apple crumble cake and paired it with a contrasting vegetal tea, which came loose leaf and ready to steep. Service was on the only slow side with only one person, presumably the owner, working. It was the sort of place where many would come for ambiance and sit a while.

She is knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and willing to have a nice conversation while doing our tasting along with another couple beside us. We loved all the wines we tasted, especially the sweet vermouth which was a surprise. We immediately joined the Enthusiast wine club. We took home 3 bottles of wine that day. After our tasting, which took about an hour, we had a reservation for lunch. We were seated inside the restaurant in front of a large window with a great view. We had the Mahi Mahi sandwich and Steak Diane. We also recommend the Tuna Carpacio appetizer and the goat cheese appetizer. We met the owners that day and have seen JW a couple times at our subsequent visits. We have also visited their sister winery, Rayson, and had a lovely time there as well. Nice people and good food enhanced our experience on my husband's birthday. Levi is another outstanding member of their team. We love both wineries and the staff is just fantastic at both!

And free refills on a bread service which I couldn't understand at first but I was on board ! Elena our server was awesome and super sweet and accommodating. Loved her ! Let me say from my last review everything else at this place is still on the pricier side especially the drinks. We started with a lemon drop martini for my friend and I tried the sage and salt spritz. Both excellent. Loved the light refreshing spritz. Then on Elena's recommendation we tried the Bloody Mary gazpacho which was soup of the day. Wow. I could have eaten this bowl and maybe another. Chunky veggies, celery, cucumber, onions and tomatoes and in a tomato base with that hint of Bloody Mary spice. Delicious. The bread service was also great loved the whole grain. Then the oysters. We had a dozen and they went down well. Love how they present these. All the trimmings. Perfect warm evening dinner outside. The patio here is the best. Not sure why so many people were sitting inside on a perfectly sunny warm evening and hardly anyone sat outside. Beats me. Elena then told us about the free bread service refill so yes we jumped on that and a order of their double battered fries which are super crunchy and hit the spot. My friend also tried the spritz as she liked mine. Ended with an espresso martini and I have to say it was ok . For $21 and hardly any foam I've had better in town. We also tried the in house made raspberry Bundt cake with vanilla cream and this also was just ok. Little dry and hard to cut into. Was expecting softer cake. Not what I was hoping it to be. The raspberry sauce was good though. I would maybe try something else. They have some other nice choices for desserts. Had a great night here otherwise. Will most definitely be back for those oysters. Thanks Elena for such great service and a wonderful girls night!

Juicy and flavorful. Lasagna had a bit too much lemon in the ricotta for me, and not enough bechamel. Overall a really nice experience. I would return.
