I hopped on bored with PRM in the middle of my second trimester, always wanting a homebirth with a…read moremidwife and COVID being the final push for me to do so. I had warned upfront that we would have to work with payment because we were also buying a house. We would be able to eventually swing it, we were just waiting to close. Unfortunately, the closing for the house took way longer than expected and while these women claim it wasn't about money, I'm almost sure it was. I kept asking to discuss a payment plan so we'd have more stability and so they could see we really were committed, but every time I brought it up they always told me it was "fine". I'm 35 weeks pregnant, was only seen 3 times (plus an additional home visit where I was served the discharge papers), and God forbid talked to Sera about how I felt. On their website they say they offer mental support and I began experiencing ante-natal anxiety and this last week I had become depressed as well. So I reached out to Sera to express concerns I had about how I had felt put on the back burner considering every text message I had sent her prior had been not responded to and the fact that I kept missing appointments, to the point where I just texted Sarah about whatever I needed or whatever questions I had. The first time I got a text from Sera was her cancelling my appointment for a birth this past Friday. They both in the discharge letter and in my follow-up text messages after the discharge kept emphasizing my "personal offense" that didn't exist due to their cancellation of my appointments because of births they had to attend and my words were purposely twisted. When Sera came to my house, she was fake. Did a normal home visit and everything and then said she thinks we may not be a good fit. I reassured her I highly disagreed but I didn't know she already had discharged me until I read the letter after she left. I'm now awaiting a bill I'll more than likely be slammed with for 3 visits and condescension while also being abandoned at 35 weeks, where it will be very difficult for me to find a new provider never mind a midwife. I expressed my confusion and disappointment in what transpired along with how I will likely be delivering at home by myself now. I was ignored by both women Sera never responded (shocker) and Sarah didn't respond after suggesting the same highly clinical midwifery that Sera did, knowing I was not interested in having a nurse as a midwife. If this baby, myself, or both dies, it may not legally be your fault but you women know you could have been the factor preventing that had I not been abandoned and anyone would agree with that. How Absolutely disgusting. I feel violated and not like I can trust anyone else now to even assist with my labor and now I have to rush to find someone I likely won't trust after my experiences both with an OB delivering my twins and midwife now with a Singleton. I had felt really optimistic about it and yet again my experience has to be ruined. If you go with these people, never speak up for yourself or be your own advocate or provide any sort of critique because they clearly have very fragile egos. They insist it was not for monetary reasons so if it wasn't this, then they aren't as woman-of-color friendly like they claim. I doubt they get many POC customers and they discharge the one they had. Protect yourself from having to deliver solo like I likely will and find a better provider.

My partner was 100% on board and we spoke to a family midwife friend for advice. She recommended Birth and Beyond. I looked at their website and made an appointment. From my first meeting with Vicki I felt like I found what I was looking for. We communicated well, we understood each other and spoke the same language. Whenever I left my wellness visits I felt positive and cared for. I had confidence every step of the way that I was in good hands. Yes birthing is unpredictable so a few of my appointments had to be rescheduled because of births but it was no big deal. The back office personal was helpful and caring. They answered whatever billing questions or scheduling concerns I had. I found the group thorough and operated like a well-oiled machine. I liked the down to earth touch and the authentic styles of both Vicki and Cheri. They offer 3 mandatory meetings that both parents attend. These meetings are held with 5 or 6 other couples expecting babies and the meeting is chock full of Information about the process. It's a great forum to ask and receive answers to questions. Having a home birth requires quite a bit of prep. There are many things to prepare for. Although they give you a list and walk you through everything, it's your responsibility to prepare your home with the supplies for the birth. We highly recommend renting a birth tub it was wonderful and so helpful with pain management. We also benefited greatly from the placenta encapsulation service. The post birth pediatric care is excellent and the best part of having a home birth is you don't have to leave your house until you've rested at least 2 weeks! Birth and Beyond offers a wonderful service with caring, devoted midwives who have 20+ years of expertise to support whatever your home birth vision is.

She was a source of immense comfort and reliable expertise at every step, starting with early labor while I was at home, and then over the course of a 15 hour day in the hospital. She came equipped with all kinds of labor support tools that she used at various points throughout the journey, but her gentle, steady, and encouraging demeanor played the most critical role. I felt that she was connected to me the entire time, physically through gentle touch or guiding me through various positions, as well as mentally, offering mantras, listening carefully, and helping me navigate tricky decisions as my labor presented some challenges--she felt like my ally and advocate at every moment, never putting pressure on me, letting me lead and supporting my instincts. Ultimately, we achieved the tremendous feat of an unmedicated natural birth together, and I absolutely know that I would not have been able to reach that goal without her help. One key strength of hers was the way she skillfully navigated working with the rest of the L&D team. Our doctor told us afterwards how impressed she was with Sooo-z's professionalism, her ability to collaborate smoothly with the nurses to get me what I needed, and her absolute focus on me--something they don't always see with doulas. She's also just a delightful person, easy to spend time with, caring and kind, un-fussy and down to earth. I'd recommend her a thousand times over!

If I could go back in time and have Sooo-z with me during both my births, I would. In a time during which everything revolved around taking care of my newborn and my toddler, Sooo-z made sure someone was caring for me. From helping with some nursing challenges, to making sure I was nourishing my body (her lactation cookies and spinach smoothies are amazing), to watching my baby so I could sleep, even to washing pumping parts - Sooo-z was a true gift. While I'm over the hump of sleepless newborn nights and days without routine or breaks, I still reach out to Sooo-z for questions, recommendations, or just to chat. She is one of a kind, and anyone who can include her in their birth or postpartum plans is truly lucky.

Thanks to the compassionate care provided by Dr. Marlaine Jean-Miller & the entire team, my previous fear of visiting the OB-GYN has transformed into a feeling of reassurance & ease. They genuinely care about their patients, taking the time to thoroughly discuss any concerns or questions, which makes all the difference. The triage nurse Kendra is also amazing and has helped to ease my anxiety going through my first and current pregnancy. The warm, professional environment and personalized attention make this practice a five-star choice for anyone seeking compassionate women's health care in Rocky Hill.
