The drive to rural Virginia is beautifully scenic and worth the extra oil changes (avoid 66). The rescue is disguised as an ordinary garage of a beautiful house amongst farms. However, once you step foot inside the garage you'll see that it's anything but ordinary. The garage was transformed and custom built into a Siamese cat sanctuary. The building is equipped with state of the art equipment and laboratory supplies for cat care. Sanitation is a major priority at VA Siamese Rescue from the quarantine room right down to hair brushes. The extremely immaculate facility is also cat-friendly. The lower level boasts a "jungle gym" for feline enjoyment, as well as many climbing apparatuses and spacious cat condos. Each cat is given individualized diet and their own litter box. Careful attention is paid to dietary and digestive habits of each cat. Their health is monitored daily to ensure any illness or ailment is immediately addressed. The rescue staff have very close relationship with veterinarians. Upstairs reside the elderly Siamese. These cats are reasonably separated from the younger ones due to greater health requirements and a less playful (and more lazy) lifestyle. The quarantine room is located on this level, where cats are isolated and treated for any contagious diseases. What about the cats themselves? ALL of them are lovely and beautiful but each possesses different and distinct personality traits. There are true Meezers that are talkative and loyal, the Divas that shift from charismatic to "Garfield-esque" without a moment's notice, the rambunctious and mischievous teenagers, the gentle yet shy gentry, and so forth. The best part of visiting the rescue is getting to play with the cats and learn about their personalities. Siri co-operates the rescue, and she's very knowledgeable and attentive to the cats' needs. These cats have been abandoned and rescued several times throughout their lives. She's a straight shooter, not a used car salesperson trying to send an adopter off with a lemon. Siri is particular to ensure that you and the cat are a compatible match. She does not sugarcoat the flaws of the cats, but only has their best interest in mind. Only the qualified to own and care for a Siamese will be considered as their adoption process is elaborate (but not daunting). While all of this seem like overkill, bringing a pet into your home is not unlike having a child. A lot of planning and attention to detail must be paid. The Siamese Rescue is a wonderful, and reputable non-profit organization specializing in one of the most intelligent and captivating cat breeds. Curtis and I give them our strongest recommendations.
