Smuggler's Notch State Park provides hiking, camping, nature programs, and mountain biking…read more Smuggler's Notch Park got its name because In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson passed an embargo act forbidding American trade with Great Britain and Canada. This was a severe hardship for northern Vermonters, since Montreal was closer than other markets in the US. Many local people continued illegal trade with Canada, herding cattle and carrying other goods through the Notch. Later, fugitive slaves used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. During the Prohibition years, liquor was smuggled from Canada over the improved road built in 1922. My mother and I just rode through and it was miles of the park with different areas to explore. The we're many hikers and explorers out. All I can say is the mountains are beautiful and the atmosphere is amazing. I would definitely want to come back in fall to see the trees change colors.

The scenery, river location, and spacious sites are beautiful. That alone would be 5 stars for us. Unfortunately, there were several issues that made the overall experience disappointing, especially considering the nightly price. 2 people engaging in sexual activitities on 2 occasions We witnessed very young children being given rides on ATVs/side-by-sides without helmets, including one child who appeared to be around 2 years old and another child riding in a milk crate on a four-wheeler. We have video of these incidents and have made reports. We also frequently saw ATVs, UTVs, e-bikes, and e-scooters traveling quickly and/or the wrong direction through the campground, which felt unsafe with children around. The bathrooms were visibly dirty, with green algae/mold growth, and there were times when there was no toilet paper. We also observed inappropriate behavior occurring in the men's bathroom during one of our stays, which was especially concerning for a campground advertised as family-friendly. The campground itself needs more upkeep. We noticed trash in wooded areas, an abandoned basketball hoop, overgrown horseshoe pits, broken boards, tall weeds around common areas and bathrooms, worn picnic tables, and fire pits that hadn't been cleaned. The pool area also needs attention, including clearer depth signage and repairs to what appeared to be a heavily patched liner. The camp store was rarely open when we visited on weekends, and prices were high with limited basic supplies. Some online photos also do not seem to reflect the campground's current condition. Customer service has been inconsistent. One staff member with short black hair has always been very kind and welcoming, which we appreciate. Unfortunately, we have also experienced rude and unwelcoming behavior from another staff member. We have mentioned some concerns during our stays, but did not feel they were handled very well, which is why we chose to include them in this review. Overall, Rivers Bend has beautiful scenery, a great location, and a lot of potential. The location and river views are what will keep bringing us back, but the safety concerns, upkeep, lack of activities, and customer service need significant improvement.

A gate code is needed to access the campground. We rented a cabin here. There are four. Two of them are 'deluxe' and have indoor cook tops. The others do not allow indoor cooking and have grills outside. The kitchen was very well kitted with everything you could need. The Deluxe cabin we rented was decorated in a cabin style with bear and moose motif items. A table for two in the kitchen, a couch for two or three and a nice rocker. A small desk is in the corner of the livingroom with a kitchen chair for seating. Hooks for coats and a place for shoes by the door. The gas fireplace is shut off in the summer because the pilot heats up the cabin. They are on from Septemer 1st. The bedroom has a queen bed, (linens and blankets provided) full dresser, bedside tables, another kitchen chair (a total of four in the cabin) and luggage rack. Two narrow closets included hangers, extra pillows and towels for the pool or hot tub. Three quarter bath was well maintained. Two bath towels and one hand towel. Hand soap on vanity. Hair dryer and extra TP under sink. Shelves for toiletries. Clothes hook on back of door. Two seats and a table are on the front porch. Our parking space was in front of the porch. A picnic table and firepit are to the right of the porch, at the end of the parking space. Our porch faced the gravel road into the campground. The campground is tiered from the road down to the river with camper spots on each tier. No spots are directly on the river. A field designated as a dog exercise area is next to the river, then a small, rocky beach to the river. The road noise is heard throughout the campground, even at the brook where the river babbles over the stones, which is very pleasant. The onsite store rents tubes for riding the river. A path to the left of the dog area ends where you can put the tube in the water, ride it to the end of the beach and repeat the process. Laundry, public bathrooms and shower bathrooms are in a newer, climate controlled building near the playground. A pass code is needed to enter. Two pools and a hot tub are near the office/store. Mini-golf is behind the store. Dump station on the way out near the dumpsters. Gravel roads are maintained. Some site have full hook-up, fire pit and picnic table. Very pet friendly.

The owners take great pride in the property that they have curated, and it is evident in every inch of the campsite. The facilities are cleaned daily, firewood is available, and the owners are a wealth of local knowledge and insight. this is by far the best campsite we have ever stayed at, the tone set by the owners really does attract a certain level of campers that are respectful and pleasant, there was no loud music, late nights or bright lights blazing through the night. This is an absolutely perfect place to decompress and enjoy the scenery. We cannot wait to come back!

Gifford Woods State Park is a great location for hikers (or any visitor to the Killington area for…read morethat matter) to bunk for a couple of nights. The park hosts 4 cabins, 22 tent/RV sites, and 21 lean-to sites located around two paved/well-maintained dirt roads on the premises. It appears to be open Memorial Day weekend to late October. It is a breeze to find, easily located just off Route 100. The Appalachian Trail runs right through the park so you may catch a glimpse of some thru-hikers on their journey between Maine and Georgia! The park is very well-maintained! The campsite was neatly raked, the fire pit cleaned out for use. I stayed at campsite #1 and it was quite spacious...a bit further removed from the road than the other campsites. The whole site was marked out with a fine gravel, plenty of room for parking and maneuvering the car. Each road loop contains modern bathrooms and coin-operated hot showers. There are areas for picnicking, volleyball, horseshoes, trash/recycling, and drinking water. Kent Pond is just across the way complete with boat launch and fishing! Booking and check-in were a breeze for this location. I called 10 days before our intended arrival and got a site no problem. On arrival, the ranger at the park office was very friendly and sold us firewood and ice straight from there. If you need any assistance during off-hours, the ranger lives in a cute house attached to the park office. They encouraged us to knock on the door at any time if we needed help. The campsite is pet-friendly and I came across quite a few well-behaved dogs during my stay. Quiet hours are from 10pm-7am. The park itself is pretty quiet all day long... I heard nothing but birds chirping, trees rustling, and a bit less-welcoming: the traffic from Route 100. This didn't bother me so much since I generally wear earplugs to sleep but something to consider if you prefer a more rustic atmosphere when camping. Tent sites are between $20-$22/night, $27-$29 for a lean-to site, and $50 for cabins. There is a 2-night minimum for reservations. Affordable, clean, convenient... I would definitely stay here again!

Given that said elderly lady needs a walker to get around, this was a less than ideal arrangement. Upon speaking to the management, we were informed that they were unwilling to accommodate her disability by switching her to a first floor unit. Right then and there, they lost any future business we would ever have with them. Edit: Day 2, upon using the oven this morning, and trying to turn it off, the knob came off in my hand. At least maintenance came by fairly swiftly, otherwise the hotel might have burned down.
