Here comes your first bad review Salon Burke. And I'm not sorry. I had high expectations for my haircut with Esmirna. I found Salon Burke through a yelp search and was impressed by all the great reviews. I was equally impressed by the gorgeous decor and friendly staff when I got there. I'm originally from Boston and I've lived in Maine for 5 years now. And in that time I've been (unsuccessfully) searching for a salon as good as my old one back home. During my consultation, I said things like "I want to look like I have extensions, with body around my head and long layers flowing down" and "I want to thin out the ends a bit because its always so bottom heavy." We talked about Teresa Judice and how gorgeous her hair is. I have (used to have) super super thick long beautiful wavy/curly hair like that. My hair was my thing. Until last Wednesday night... Before my shampoo, she took out the thinning shears and went to town. I watched nervously, as she cut all the way up to my SCALP in most areas. She kept saying "trust me" so I did... After about 10min of this, there was a 5lb mound of hair-road-kill on the floor and I waved goodbye to it as we walked over to the shampooing area. She shampooed me and gave me a delightful neck massage back at her station and then she began the actual haircut. Side note: she bad mouthed the hell out of one of her other clients while she was shampooing me - isn't that a huge no no in the customer device biz? It def made me feel pretty awkward. Anyway, she finished the cut, giving me lots of nice layers, an angle in the front, and some long face-framing bangs, just like I asked. The cut was actually pretty good but I was left with less than half the amount of hair I walked in there with and I want to cry now every time I wash my hair in the shower or run my hands through it. It's borderline scraggly. I feel like part of my identity is gone. That's not how most people want to feel when they leave the hair salon after paying $70 (including tip). All I can say is, thank the sweet lord that hair grows back. Although, it's hard to look at the bright side of this since it's going to take me at least a year or two before mine is really back to the way it was. Ugh :( From now on, no more messing around...I'll be making the drive back down to Boston to my old high end salon whenever I need a cut. UPDATE: It has been two weeks since this dumb haircut, and now that I've had the chance to sleep on it and style it a few times, I'm noticing that I wake up with a strange cowlick in the back that I have never had before, and I also have SIDEBURNS now. WTF? I've never had any sideburns in my life. It's from the short little scalp hairs that she cut with the thinning shears. This may be the place to go if you have thin hair and want a typical long layered haircut, but I wouldn't recommend it for a high-quality, highly stylized cut if you have long thick hair! read more

Went to Green with Envy with the expectation of spending $200-$250 for highlights and a trim. Low and behold $350 later I was shocked! I mean I have long hair but I would never expect to be paying this kind of money for the service I received. When I asked for the price breakdown the stylist told me it was an extra $150 for toner and each "extra" bowl of color (they used 4 bowls)! WHAAAAT?! I don't even know what that means. I called the manager who gave me this spiel about how it's industry standard to charge for these costs. Also, like many of the previous reviewers, I never received my free brow wax either! I needed my mop of curls cut and a good friend of mine recommended Salon Burke and Esmirna. I'm very picky about my hair. Curls, for those of you who don't know, can be very tricky. Not everyone knows how to handle them. Esmirna asked me what I wanted, she took the time to talk and listen (something I'm not used to in a stylist). I showed her several photos. We decided on a direction and she started. From the first cut I knew she was a professional by the time the haircut was finished I knew she was an ARTIST! I am so happy with my haircut. I live in Chicago and I'm not sure if can live without Esmirna cutting my hair! I supposed I will have to fly back to Portland and visit my favorite salon and my favorite stylist. I called a week before I was going to be in town to get a color appointment. I am from Boston and knew that this was the only time I could get in, and they were very willing to accommodate. I didn't have a preference for a stylist, so they chose for me. I got there 15 minutes late and the staff was very understanding. I was the last appointment of the day so I felt a little bit guilty. I also was quite a bit nervous, as I live in Boston now, but I've been driving back to CT to see the stylist in my parents' hometown since I have been unable to find anyone local to Boston who understands what I want. I shouldn't have been worried, Esmirna was absolutely FABULOUS. She sat me down and listened to what I wanted (an update to my blond for the summer) and also recommended a cut as I have really thick hair. She worked on me for over two hours and I walked out looking exactly how I wanted. My hair was lighter but tasteful and natural. She even stayed late to finish my hair after all of the other employees had left! Total for the service (w/o tip): $165. You just can't beat that price in Boston, and my hair looked stunning. 3 weeks later I am still wearing my hair down without a blowdry and the color is flawless. I can't recommend Esmirna highly enough - she is awesome! read more

I was really looking forward to this as my go to salon but it will be my pass by salon. Just left a few hours ago and feel the need to write about this asap. I booked a cut and complimentary brow wax with Lacey. I was running late looking for parking but once I got there, she was ready for me. We went to get my hair washed and it was the quickest wash ever. The heated towel was nice, but she didn't lift the lever so my foot could also be up while my head was back. I just stretched out my feet in the air and it was a lot more comfortable. After that, she started the trim and it was done pretty fast. She didn't show me the back but just the length it was. Sure, why not? It's a trim so can't go wrong with that. I then asked if my brow wax is at the same time as the scalp massage. She said that it wasn't on the appointment and I told her on the website, it says it comes with it. She apologized and said we could do it next time since my hair would have to be rewashed. She curled my hair and while that was setting up, my brows got cleaned up. I love the shape! But not the wax that stayed on my face. I also asked for water. Isn't it standard to be offered water at a nice salon? The front desk was really helpful and friendly. If I didn't have a new client offer promotion, I would've asked for my money back. I still tipped generously because she did curl my hair (styling is also standard). She is a level 2 stylist so maybe that's why? I like her, I think she's nice but overall the service was subpar. Shouldn't you know what comes standard in a haircut? The best part was my brows and the front desk employee. I love Aveda products and this is one of their salons but I will not be coming back. Salon Burke is in my opinion the best place in Portland to get your hair cut. You definitely get the big city salon experience there. I had my hair cut by Michelle and she did a great job, she knew what will look good on me without me giving her so much explanation. Loved it However, I have a very big critique to the customer service. I shoed up for an appointment and it turned out they cancelled it without me knowing because the person did not write my phone number correctly and they called someone else who did not have an appointment there..obviously. Awful place. Terrible. Totally irresponsible. We booked a "wedding package" and went there before the wedding for a hair and makeup appointment. They told us they would do hair but they did not have anyone to do makeup when we arrived. The wedding was in three hours. I told them that I did not think the bride brought her own makeup with her and they knew that we were from out of town. The person at the front desk was rude when I tried to get her to find someone and had the audacity to tell me "that we did not have a contract with them". She suggested we go to Walmart to get makeup. The bride had her hair done and got a barely acceptable curling job, nothing worth the money. read more

Michelle Butler is amazing! She literally works magic with my hair. I have been a client of hers for over 10 years and for a few haircuts and a highlight I tried a couple other stylists, but I will never again. Michelle gets me, and my hair. And I just love the atmosphere and vibe at Salon Burke. It's beautifully designed and clean, sleek and comfortable. I love that you change into a robe for your service and the awesome scalp massage while the conditioner is in your hair, a good 3-5 mins. Then, after rinsing and toweling up your hair, you choose an Aveda scent and they massage your neck and shoulders for another 5-10 mins. It's heavenly!!! And I just love Aveda products. It's really just the best salon around, and there are a lot of salons in the greater Portland area. read more

If you live in Portland and you get your hair cut at any other salon, you're doing it wrong. The stylists at this salon are friendly and top-notch. They were able to squeeze me into their schedule on very short notice, and I wholly appreciated that. Luke cut my hair and did a superb job. I came in with a vague idea of the style I wanted, and he brought it to life and helped give it a modern edge. He was very nice and keenly professional, and the haircut that he gave me is perhaps the best I've ever had. Great customer service when calling and entering. My trim took the stylist all of 15 minutes and I was charged over 36 for it. I was definitely not treated with a traditional Aveda experience that I have always had at every Aveda salon. This has always included a complimentary scalp massage and hair wash, both of which I did not receive. I was however treated to a bundle of products at the end of my 15 min service that the stylist recommended for my hair type. I understand selling product is both how the stylist and salon keep their lights on, however, in the future I would appreciate it if I did receive a full Aveda experience in a salon with the Aveda name on it. One more thing: I was offered and I accepted over the phone upon booking the appt a complimentary eyebrow wax with my service which honestly would have helped ease the pain of the 36 dollar bill for the trim I received around my ears and neck. However, I was never offered nor received the eyebrow wax during my visit. The stylist did an average job with the cut or I would have given 2 stars. read more

At first, I thought it was going to be a bit high-brow for my tastes, but after being pampered and chatting with my stylist, Miranda, I left feeling like a million bucks (after spending a well-worth-it few) and I am completely won over. This place makes you feel right at home - great energy! All the stylists were super sweet, and Burke the owner is so welcoming and warm. You clan tell all these stylists enjoy what they do, and love working at the salon. This salon has a different feel to it, and it's refreshing! I popped into Salon Burke on business a few months ago, and it was Josh's charming and professional demeanor at the counter that made me call and ask for an appointment with him. PLUS this place is GORGEOUS ;) I came in for a partial highlight with Josh Williams, and it's sooo beautiful! Color is his specialty :) I told him I loved cool blonde tones, and that's what I got! Melissa is unbelievably fabulous. She fixed my hair today after I'd given up on my former salon. I'd had months of agonizing Barbie hair hack jobs & I didn't even think my hair was fixable. I needed to color my hair especially the roots and love aveda. I looked on the site and found this salon. What a disappointment. I even had my exact aveda formula for her to mix. 2 weeks after my color has faded terribly and my gray is all back. I I trusted this salon since they are aveda. I paid $75 for something I could have done in a bottle from cvs. I also waited and waited for my Sensory Ritual which never happened even after I asked/reminded the colorist and front desk several times. Amazing!!! Kayla was my stylist and gave me the best fade that I've ever had. This was my first visit to Green With Envy Salon and it will be most certainly be the only place I'll ever need to go. This review is completely long and over due I am writing this review because I am still suffering completely for the damage and effects done to my hair . Last year around November I had went to see Rachel miller for a consultation about possibly lightening up my hair for a balayage / ombré . I had made it clear and explained to her how I had have box colored dyed hair (black) in my hair and she had informed me how it would be absolutely no problem to lighten up my hair and achieve the color I wanted , I felt at ease at first because I assumed she was a professional and knew what she was doing , man do I completely REGRET ever sitting in her chair and going to this place , as she was bleaching my hair for over 40 mins my scalp literally felt like it was on fire to the point where I had to ask her to stop , she then checked my hair and I clearly herd an " oh no " and she asked another employee to come look , the other employee told her to wash my hair out immediately . She then washed my hair and as I went and sat back in her chair and looked in the mirror my hair was completely fired severely damaged and discolored . She informed me to come back tomorrow and she will fix the problem no worries she sent me home with soaked wet hair when it was legit beyond freezing out because she was scarred to apply any heat of any kind . I tried my best not to freak out . The next day I arrive she proceeded to dye my hair, after all the damage and processing she decided to take it upon herself to dye my hair back to a dark horrible brown color which I did NOTTT want at all to make it worse it was a perm color , I knew she only did that to make it seem like her huge mess up wasn't so bad she wanted to cover her mistake . I expressed how upset I was and she responded well come back a few months and it'll get better . I had called and spoke to the manager because I was beyond upset my hair is now so damaged and to make worse their was absolutely no fixing to it , after charging me over 200$ for this horrible experience they only refunded me 70$ .... 1 year later and about $2,000+ in hair treatments and yes I mean over $2000 my hair is still not nearly as healthy as it was before coming in and I am still paying the price of the damage , I literally have broken choppy hair pieces and my hair has fallen out so much . Please do your research before ever considering trusting someone with your hair !! read more

I've had excellent haircuts by not one but two of the stylists, the TLC you get during your appointment (thoughtful planning, aromatherapy scalp massage) is fab and the cut is so good. Miranda and Tommy are incredible stylists and hello - the helpful and lovely front desk staff is nothing to be sniffed at. I even bask in luxe treatments here like deep conditions and the occasional highlight because it's a genuinely relaxing place to get pampered. Adore this salon and worth every darn penny. read more

Michelle Butler is the best hairdresser, hands down. I've been coming to Salon Burke for over 10 years now and I've never ever had a bad haircut here. I have very thick and wavy hair and not many hair stylists know how to cut my hair. Once I found Michelle, I knew I found my hair stylist for life. I cannot say enough good things about her. When my mother visits from LA, she wants an appointment with Michelle because she said the LA hairdressers are not nearly as good as Michelle and they are more expensive! I love the whole experience at Salon Burke while getting my hair colored and cut. The scalp massages and the aromatherapy shoulder and neck massages are to die for!
