Even from our first consultation, we exchanged contact information and before my first appointment had time for me to send pictures from Pinterest of what I wanted my dyed hair to look like. Not only that, but she then did her own looking online to find similar ideas and photos to send to me to really verify that she was certain about the specific look I was going for. You can feel that they really CARE about how your look turns out here, which is a nice feeling - instilled from the first moment I walked in and was immediately offered a drink while I waited on a comfortable couch for my appointment to start. (their shop is SO CUTE.) When it came to actually getting the hair dyed and trimmed, again the process was very communicative and all about MY input on what I wanted, which was great. Natalie also is a joy to talk to and kept me entertained with a string of friendly conversation the whole way through. Price-wise, I have had my hair dyed at a fair amount of places and this was definitely the cheapest, by at least $30-$40 dollars, yet I had not a single complaint with my hair and have been so incredibly happy with how the dyeing turned out. If you want a place that actually listens to your requests and values communication, has a cozy and home-y aesthetic, and is not going to be the biggest burden on your wallet, check out Natalie at Gloss. I let her know I had a wedding coming up and I chose here because they explicitly advertise low maintenance highlights that grow out without harsh lines. As soon as I got back from the shampoo bowl I noticed my blonde was multiple shades lighter than anything I would be able to keep up with, and panicked a bit. Kristen acknowledged it was a lot. When we looked at the line of where the highlights started versus my root she expressed understanding that this wasn't super blended and tried to put some color on it to fix it. There were also spots where the bleach bled, so there are random (literal) spots in my hair that are much brighter than other areas (see pics). I was stressing since this was the very front of my hair that would show in an updo, and the side of my head looked like there was a bald spot from the bleach lol. She assured me I could come back to get some lowlights or some kind of correction so I tipped well and left, despite being pretty anxious. I reached out to Kristen the next day to schedule a fix like she said and this was her response: "Sorry you're not happy with your color! I feel as though my hair coloring technique isn't what you're looking for and another artist will have the technique you're looking for. In this case, we will refund you for your service." What??? I have two weeks until a wedding and if that's not your technique, then why do you advertise highlights with "optimal brightness without noticeable lines or harsh grow out"? Such a strange way of handling it when you don't deliver well. Leaving me high and dry, stressing out trying to find an appointment somewhere rather than fixing it. And I personally think if you can't fix highlights that don't look good or bleach bleeds, you shouldn't be doing highlights in the first place. Like I said strange, disappointing experience. I can see that someone else on here had a similar one, too. Also the owner responded to my google review by accusing me of making the stylist feel "unsafe." The same stylist who had me get my phone out while I was in the chair, look up her personal instagram, follow her, and told me to reach out to her on there to book a lowlight to fix my hair. Very strange thing to do with someone you feel "unsafe with." Accusing me of making the stylist feel unsafe and trying to shame me into deleting my review rather than just admitting they handled this situation poorly and didn't have the ability to deliver or fix their mistakes just underscores my experience.

And then I read about this rare (what I thought was a mythical) creature - a stylist who actively cared about what her clients wanted, while also providing brutally honest feedback about their current hair situation and their hair vision, but then worked with them to achieve something otherworldly. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but that's how I've felt. I came to Kaitlyn with a tangly brown limp mess. I wanted an ombre (a multi toned hair effect) of my natural hair color to white then blue. Instead she offered up a moderate balyage (highlights blending seamlessly) of aquatic. The next time I saw her, more of my hair was balayaged with aquatic, and now basically my whole head is aquatic colored. She transformed me into a sea queen, and everywhere I go people compliment my mermaid hair (no, really, they do). And I legit had nothing to do with it. I never thought I'd have ocean-inspired hair, but it looks so natural that the first time I did it people were like "yeah, that's how you were always supposed to look." WHAT? She also trims me up and offers advice on how to manage the style (french braids are a go, messy buns always work, pony's should be avoided, and can we bring back the scrunchie already?). And I know, without a doubt, that the moment I were to walk in and say, "I'm done with this, could I have something 'normal' please?" she'd find the exact perfect look for me, my face structure, my skin tone, my personality. My partner also sees her every four to five weeks; she keeps his hair and beard line fresh. Love the studio itself - it's small but very modern, minimalist chic. There's ONLY street parking, so if you're in it for more than two hours you might wanna consider Ubering. Also, there are other talented stylists who work here, so maybe go see them? Because Kaitlyn's booking up way to fast and far out now for my liking. (No, it's okay, really, you can see her too... Iet's live in a world where everyone loves their gorgeous hairdos).

The salon has a wonderful vibe and esthetic for young women to discover their style and explore different hairstyles. The people who work there are friendly and welcoming. They pay attention to each customer's specific needs, making sure to care for them in a way that feels comfortable and easy so they can be themselves. Every time my daughter has an appointment she leaves feeling so good about herself, and is so happy - this is a such a gift! The appointment scheduling is easy, and they do text appointment reminders and confirmations, and it is easy to reschedule if needed. The prices are the average of what one would pay anywhere for hair services...they definitely are not more expensive than other places. The only slightly negative thing is they do seem to recommend a lot of hair products...and at our last visit...they recommended $150 worth of products...and one product...a small bottle of some kind of styling gel was $53 by itself. This seems a bit excessive. When I declined to purchase, there was no attitude or pressure to reconsider....Thank goodness!

I had it narrowed down to one, and then I had two choices of stylists when I called to make my appointment. I'm big on the vibe, so I pulled up the website and chose Jessica purely based on the vibe I felt she had in her photo, which was chill but professional. I am SO GLAD I went out on a limb and established with her because my hair has been so much happier since! I have followed her through each step of her career, most recently in her very own space within Mint Salon Block in Scarborough. I have seen her grown tremendously over these past few years, and she has been able to help me through all the different hair colors I have chosen over the years. I had only ever had one shade of blonde hair (my own) when I visited her (with the exception of highlights from time to time) and she was able to convince me to try lowlights the first time I met her (for dimension). I'm glad I trusted her enough to take that jump, because that was just the starting off point. I've been blonde, brunette, dark dark brown with purple, blue, etc, and now copper WHICH I LOVE. She is adventurous and is always up for a challenge. Any time I come to her with a thought, she gladly accepts it and works with me on it. She has a true talent and eye for what looks good for the client, and she hits the mark each and every time. In addition to her amazing technical skills, she is also a joy to be around. She keeps it light, is super fun to talk with, and is attentive to your every need (coffee? water? wine? She's got you covered!).
