If I could give this spa a zero, I would. I booked my appointment online, was never required to complete a health assessment form before I booked the appointment. I made the 45 minute trip, to their place of business. Arrived early as instructed to complete their health assessment form. I waited another 10 minutes before being escorted to the treatment room. Once inside, I was told that because I had a medical condition listed on the form, they could not service me. When I explained my dissatisfaction at the front desk, I received excuse after excuse after excuse. Do not, I repeat do not go to this business unless you have completed theor health assessment form in advance and ask them specifically to review it before you make the drive and if you will be allowed to receive their services. read more

Angela gave me such a relaxing facial - she explained everything and even made on the fly changes to accommodate my allergies. Wendy gave me my massage, and I was a wet noodle afterwards. The spa is well appointed with everything you could need. I am not a sauna person, but they have a lovely one that can be used when there for any other service. The robes and sandals are comfy and come in all sizes. The showers and restrooms are clean and private. The only drawback is that parking is tough to find on the street or expensive in the garage. What a pleasant and relaxing experience this was. I arrived a little bit early as they recommended and was greeted by a very cozy changing room with a built-in sauna. The sauna was occupied at the time as it is only for one person, but I was able to use it at the end. After putting on my robe and sandals, I was able to sit in a very comfortable chair drink some tea and wait for my masseuse. My wife and I came for a couples massage while visiting Portland. I have never been to a massage spa so had no clue what to expect. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. The facilities were modern, clean, and stocked with trendy teas and remedies to try. Our massage therapists were very nice and kept in good communication with us both to make sure they were delivering the perfect massage. I definitely left well rested and relaxed. This was my first visit to Nine Stones Spa. I had an appointment for a facial, it had been years since having one. I arrived to check in and immediately was already relaxed. The sounds of nature softly playing in the background, the smell was clean and fresh. I was given a tour and brought to the locker room to change, which was not your typical locker room. A sauna to use before your treatment if you'd like, cold lemon infused washcloths. The next room is the lounge where you wait for your Esthetician(tea&water available)I was warmly greeted by Angela who was incredible!! She first asked if I had any questions or concerns with my skin, gave me an overview of what to except and gave me a few minutes to get comfortable on the bed. The next hour was heaven. This visit was a holiday gift, so it was my first visit to Nine Stones. I was not sure what to expect. I have heard great things, but thought it might be a bit to fru fru for me...which if you know me...is stupid. But anyway... From the moment you walk into Nine Stones you immediately feel a difference in your body. The sounds and smells set the tone the moment you open the door. The staff at the desk greets you with a smile and walks you through the process. Since it was my first time, they gave me a quick tour and explained the process to me. The waiting area looked so comfortable and the offer you teas and water to enjoy while you relax and wait for your session. For a group, it would be a perfect environment to all meet and chat and relax before your massage. The bathrooms are clean, and offer showers, lockers for your belongs and a sauna. You go in change into a full robe and sandals. Then walk out to the waiting area for your massage. Well, since I was the last appointment for the day, my masseuse was waiting for me and brought me to my room. The hour session seemed like two and the combination of oils, maybe stones and hot towels were incredible. I still could not believe all that took place in just an hour session. I was so relaxed. Then back to the bathroom to change and go home, which was a bummer. If I had known about all the prep and after, I would have scheduled my appointment with more of a time buffer. Easily scheduled my appointment online when I was in town. I had a quick wax so I got a same day appointment. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment and everything was exactly on time. Super clean spa and it smelled of Naturopathic products, the spa was much larger than I thought. The mani/pedi room is directly off the lobby, there's another waiting room -- for people awaiting massages, waxes and other treatments -- where you can chill before or between appointments. There's a well-appointed ladies locker room and various treatment rooms. Everything smells great! I didn't know until I arrived at my appointment that I could use the sauna & shower before/after my appointment. Huge plus. You'll probably need to make an appointment well in advance if you want a massage, or longer facial. But most spas are like that. My services were handled with competence, great care & smiling customer service. There's a parking garage next door or you could easily walk there from The Residence Inn or the AC Hotel. read more

Not having success finding a nail salon with availability in the town where I am staying, I stumbled upon information for Nine Stones Spa in Portland. Fortunately, they had an opening while I was staying in Freeport and it was just a 15 minute drive. The Spa was easy to find and I was able to park on the street in front of the building. I was greeted promptly and the nail tech came to the lobby to meet me within minutes. I had a wonderful pedicure; the massage chairs work well, the foot massage was the best. Not having enough time for the gel pedicure, I opted for their Dazzle Dry-quick dry polish. They had so many colors to chose from! I was in and out in an hour and my nails look amazing! read more

Even better, she didn't try to sell me tons of products that would fix it, but made general recommendations on what the problem is and inexpensive options on how to make it better. This Spa must cater to wealthy tourists because $110 for a 60 minute Swedish massage with no parking?? OMG. I called on the way to my massage to ask if they had parking and it went right to the answering machine twice. I parked in the parking garage right next to their new location assuming they must validate parking.... they don't! The locker room area is nice and equipped with a sauna, shower and robes/slippers to change into. However I didn't know they had a sauna because they don't mention this when booking your appointment or confirming it 5 times. I wish they would have let me know ahead of time because I would have brought a day bag and taken advantage of the sauna and showers. The spa itself and the massage room were HOT on a hot day. The air was almost stuffy. No AC. I had a decent massage but would never pay $110 for it again. There are much better options out there... especially places that have parking! read more

Highly recommend the hot stone massage. Cersei (Apologies if I spell her name wrong) was amazing. Worth every penny, this is a high end spa with talented massage therapists. I appreciated the waiting room with lovely teas and spent a little time in the sauna (will be back in the winter for sure!!). I also really appreciated all of the real artwork in the spa. It is a lovely space. I was given a choice of aroma therapies to use and chose the one that smelled best to me. Such a treat. I notice alot of criticisms about parking, and that is not a reflection of the spa. There is no parking in Portland people, get used to it. I didn't park in the garage. 2 blocks away were meters-$2 for 2 hours. Yes you have to walk a block or two to save that $. Same thing applies to other spas in the area. I am familiar with mini pedicures from many nail salons. A mini pedicure here was unsatisfactory. For the price of $35. I received a soak ,cuticle care,nail filing and polish. Lotion was applied. No brush cleaning scrub was offered. My request for short nail cutting was ignored. The staff member appeared to me as condescending and inexperienced. The spa is very "new age"including a fake gas fireplace in the waiting room: in the summer. Perhaps the other spa services offer more than atmosphere, hype and high prices. read more

I arrived early and filled out my form. Once I finished I looked around to try to find face products but never finished looking as the lady interrupted to make sure to show me to the back. She rushed through a short tour and left me in the locker room. It was very hard for me to relax between the women behind the desk whispering when I checked in and the loud conversations and loud laughter throughout the facility. There were also whispers the whole time I showered that magically disappeared when I turned the water off. This was my first stop after being checked in. I'm not sure if there is a time limit or if I may have "checked in too early" for their convenience. I'm use to day spas where you can stay all day if needed. The only relaxing semi-quiet area is the locker rooms but they are so small that you're on top of each other. Only one bench to sit besides the sauna. I enjoyed the water/tea station but I wish there were more refreshment options. Or a pool or hot tub. Sitting in the lobby to enjoy a drink was very noisy. As mentioned loud conversations and laughter left me in the head space that I was at a local store or shop as opposed to the spa. The lobby is right off of the busy downtown street so you also accumulated the noise from the street. Horns, music, more conversations from the people walking by. The massage was good honestly. She was nice, great hands and technique. I wanted her to focus on my problem areas a little more and really work them all the way out considering we were limited on time. Otherwise she was great. But I personally felt awkward. Like any interaction I had would be spoken about as soon as I was not in earshot. Besides my personal feelings, the facility is a bit too small for my liking, I felt rushed and never got to relax, I would prefer more amenities or even a view. I felt crowded. There is relaxing music but not my preference and the loud interactions drowned the music out. I honestly did not feel comfortable here as the only woman of color in the building. I personally feel it was a bit of a waste of money, even with me only buying one treatment. This is somewhere you go if you have no other choice but I would not recommend it as a first choice or a choice at all honestly. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. read more

Nine Stones was able to accomodate us all and also gave us a semi-private area in their lounge to hang out after the spa services. Their facility is amazing! The women's changing room had lockers, showers, bathrooms, and SAUNA! Yes, after your spa service, go wrap yourself in a towel and head into the sauna for some additional relaxation. We also loved the semi-private area in their lounge. Their lounge had tea and water to rehydrate. Also the facilities let us bring in some snacks to let us celebrate one of our friend's special occasion. read more

This is a wonderful spa. I came for a prenatal massage and it did not disappoint. Andrea at reception was lovely, and Andrea my masseuse was supremely talented! They made the experience so easy and comfortable/decadent. The spa itself is gorgeous with just enough luxury and frills to make you feel pampered. They have not overlooked key details like comfy robes and slippers, nice tea, and I think overall this is fairly priced for the quality. I left feeling relaxed and renewed. Despite others' rave reviews I didn't have a good experience at Nine Stones. After finally cashing in a holiday gift certificate for my hour of pampering I left unsatisfied. From walking in the door to greeted by no one and then to be told by two or three people someone would help me I felt like I walked into an auto mechanics garage not a spa. My neuromuscular massage was okay. Technique was fine, pressure was too light, and there just wasn't a connection where the massage therapist just "knew the spots." The massage was highly transactional; just going through the motions. The massage therapist was very kind otherwise. I won't return to nine stones nor recommend it to others. There are simply better services in town and at better prices. read more

I feel soooo bad for giving this place a 2 star review but let me tell you why... First of all the good. Everyone is really nice and the spa itself is nice. Nice products out front to sample which I had lots of fun with. But here's the bad... I got a Brazilian wax.. The wax was pretty expensive. But I notice in places like Boston and Portland that aren't really big cities like LA or NYC it typically is more expensive because less people offer it. It was $70 for my Brazilian. But still I expect a service that lives up to the price tag... My waxer was a nice girl but the wax itself was the most painful wax I've ever gotten. I've gotten waxed in LA, Atlanta, NYC and Boston... To be honest it wasn't horribly painful or anything but I have a really ridiculous pain tolerance. Brazilian waxes are a walk in the park for me. But this one wasn't as much as others... I've counted the waxes I've gotten and it's around 15. So I'm not a newbie at this... Afterwards, one side of skin between my thigh and my vagina stung to the touch. It went away by the next two days but I have never experienced that before, ever. I'm typically red but that area's skin has never actually hurt to the touch... Really weird. My waxer missed a few spots as well, but the main thing that prompted this review was this big cyst/pimple thing down there. It looks worrying and it has never happened to me. I'm honestly worried. I have had little ingrowns that look like little pimples but this one is noticeably bigger and really hurts to the touch. I hope they address this because this is unacceptable. I have gotten waxes and this has never happened to me. Two stars because everyone was really nice. I really feel bad for this review but paying $70 and leaving with painful skin and a big cyst/pimple near my butt is not a good time. read more

So, facials are my thing. I've always chosen a facial over a massage, probably because I went to massage school so I'm pretty particular... As for my facial at Nine Stones, I probably will look elsewhere first. Don't get me wrong, the receptionist was very pleasant, but the space, not relaxing or tranquil. The entrance has the nail room immediately to the right, which is often a very chatty space :) My facial was upstairs, in a very bright, chilly room. When she got to my feet for a quick massage, she gasped at how purple they were (after being under two blankets for 30 min already). Her techniques were very clinical with quick massage strokes, as if she didn't really want to focus on the relaxing aspect. She was very informative and knew her stuff, but from many previous experiences, there are plenty of ways to teach your client about product and routine other than talking thru the appointment. I stopped responding at one point to try and relax. I believe a dimmer space with soothing music (Congo drums didn't do it for me) and to focus on also relaxing the customer would be a great change for them. Their prices are also pretty exorbitant for what you get in return, being downtown Portland shouldn't be a selling point because it's not peaceful. I may try a different treatment in the future, but as for now, there are plenty of beautiful and quiet spas around town that I'd like to spread the love first :) read more

This spa lost a star from me only because the seating area is very exposed next to a busy hallway. i go to Nine Stones sometimes for massage and nail treatments. my experience is always really stellar and the staff are very genuine, kind, and attentive human beings. Mia in nails is the nicest, and Pam (the owner) is a very skilled massage therapist. if not for the price point, i'd give 4 stars. but *why* is it *Sooo* expensive?? i know, many of you say that nice spas are always pricey. fine. except i've lived in Boston/Cambridge and in NYC, and never paid as much for a massage as Nine Stones charges. that said, they offer some really wonderful options for holistic body treatment (also overpriced). so if you want a nice experience and you don't care about the price tag, make an appointment here. if you want to save some dough, shop around or consider some independently practicing body workers, there are a bunch in town. read more

I had my first spa experience here at Nine Stones and now I know what the fuss is about. I had a 60 minute Swedish massage that made transported me to Narnia. Heaven, I tell you, but at a price. My massage was $85. Yikes. I was on vacation and willing to splurge, but I wouldn't pay this much again. The spa was really nice and relaxing and my massage lady/artist/engineer was patient and made me feel very comfortable, especially since I have a neck problem. I was worried she'd do something to exacerbate it, but she asked all the right questions and knew just what to do and not do. Nine Stones also does nails. A quick polish change is $20. Where I live, that's more than the price of a full 30-minute manicure with a hand massage. Crazy. And Nine Stones has parking! Huzzah! In this town of unbelievably impossible parking even in the off-season, a parking lot, however small, is a god-send. read more
