I have been craving Mediterranean cuisine for some time and my wife and I visited today. We were greeted with a huge welcome and smile from the owners daughter who is filling in while the regular waitress is out on vacation. She was very responsive, helpful, and courteous. The decor took me back to a few places I've been to in the Middle East, so the atmosphere and music playing set an ambiance of that region. Drinks came out and were refilled without asking and our salad was perhaps one of the finest I've ever tasted as the owner and his wife prepare each salad when the meal is ordered, it was seasoned to perfection and the dressing was exquisite. I ordered the gyro dinner and my wife ordered the chicken biryani. She absolutely loved it!!! The chicken was seasoned to perfection and the saffron basmati rice was the epitome of perfection. My gyro meal was a little dry, however, hit the spot as the vegetables, rice, and meat filled in the nan bread topped with tzatziki brought the entire meal together. To top it off the owner came out to check on all the patrons and asked how their meal was. This has been a fine establishment to eat at and in my opinion is better than 95%-99% of all he Mexican restaurants in town. Get outside of your comfort zone and give this place a try. We were asked by some friends to join them for dinner this past Saturday night. They said Green Zatar is their "go to" place when they want a nice dinner in Denton. We went and are so glad we did. It's a family-owned restaurant with everyone pitching in to help their guests have a wonderful meal. Two of us had a lamb dish which looked delicious. One had a ground beef (definitely NOT hamburger) cooked on a skewer. It was great. I had a beef tenderloin souvlaki which melted in my mouth. The appetizers were terrific. Baklava was sweet but not cloying. Salads were crisp and fresh. Their BYOB policy was no problem. We took in several bottles of rich red wine which was perfect with all our meals. Nice wine glasses appeared as if by magic on our table. While I can't say enough good things about the food, it was surpassed by the friendly service and truly nice people. Hugs and handshakes all around as we left. We will definitely go back, hopefully soon. My girlfriend and I have always leaned on Mexican cuisine as our own "go to". I'm thinking now that the Green Zatar will be replacing some refried beans with Baba Ghanoush. Go and enjoy!! read more

Every time I am in Denton, I try to come here. We live out of state, but the food here is absolutely fresh and delicious. The people are warm. I compare all chicken kebabs and all hummus and baba ghanouj to theirs. The iced tea has a touch of cardamom and the house salad is dusted with zatar. This place is definitely NOT a 4 1/2 star restaurant. Tiny portions, zero service, shabby atmosphere with big city prices. The wait staff are teenagers who know nothing about service. After waiting forever for our food, we never saw the waitress again until we had finished our plates. In the meantime we got our own salt, butter, sumac and a clean fork. One plate, the Bakhtiari kebob, was $21. For that you get one skewer of alternating chicken and overcooked beef shish kebob, some grilled peppers and onions, and about a cup of dry white rice. Not even a single piece of bread. My husband ordered the Sultani kebob, $25. For that he got a small portion of warm dry white rice, an overcooked skewer of tenderloin, even though we asked for medium rare, and a very thin piece of dried up ground beef kebob. For these same prices in Dallas you would get bigger portions, quality atmosphere, prompt service. and better quality food accompanied with bread, cheese and greens. We know good Persian food because we eat it regularly. For what you get at this restaurant, the prices are unacceptable. read more

Went for lunch a couple days ago and was pretty disappointed. Our server barely welcomed us and just seemed like she did not want to be there. There were only 2 other tables in the dining room but when she took our order (veggie combo and vegan verdura sandwich) she came back twice to confirm our order- write the damn thing down if you can't remember 2 things 10 steps away to the kitchen window. The veggie combo plate is literally laughable at $9.99. 2 sad scoops of dip, 1 falafel, and 2 baby sized dolmas with 1/2 of a cold pita bread. The vegan verdura sandwich was pretty tasty and the bread much better than what came with the combo. Just not worth $20 for lunch at all. The lights hung up were the highlight of our visit. read more

Fresh ingredients and nothing is greasy like the falafel at many other "Mediterranean" restaurants in town. You can't the more Persian dishes anywhere else in Denton. I hear from meat eaters that the kabab koobideh is tops. The little shop is excellent for picking up Middle Eastern ingredients (the only place in Denton that I know of to do this). The owners even sold me a package of dried fenugreek from their own kitchen after I explained that I couldn't find the ingredients to make ghormeh sabzi at home. FYI: It's BYOB. I have also been going to IFD since it was all grocery store, then added a few tables, then became almost all restaurant. As a grocery store they stocked foods from all over and so were truly international; now that the focus is on greek and persian cuisine, the name might be a little confusing to newer arrivals. It's easy to miss, tucked away in a strip center off the main drag, but well worth the search. The mural (which reminds me of Mikonos) along with the latticework and suspended lights creates a sweet, intimate little space. Hakima, Ali and Hormat always treat me like a family friend and take great care to make sure my every desire is catered to. I have never tasted better baba and their hummus is yummus, though I usually like lots more garlic (so that it bites back); I suspect they dial it down a notch or two for local tastes. Tasty kababs, zesty tabbouleh, succulent moussaka, tender and tangy Chicken Capri, all served on a generous bed of rice. No, there aren't a ton of different dishes which is okay by me; I prefer a few solid hits over well-intentioned variety anyway. As for portion size, I always leave full and you can probably tell by my pic that I've got some capacity. Spana is delish, though I recommend eating it there and not after it's had a sauna in the styrofoam box. And you absolutely must try the Ash e Reshte, a traditional Persian noodle soup with lots of lentils, beans and greens, served with a dollop of creamy yogurt. It's not served all the time, so you might want to call ahead. read more

Other than that at my last dining inside i was extremely irritated with whoever the young kid was serving us. I brought a family member to try it that doesnt get to have much like it & hoped it would go better than it did bigtime service wise. He takes our drink order, comes back & takes our order, then after a bit two tables have new customers sit to order. He then does nothing else as far as we're concerned & proceeds to suck up bigtime to the customers at the two new tables, getting their orders, drinks & food both to both tables first, & untill their food was ready was hovering around both tables making an effort to keep talking with the two seperate couples, then finally gets us our food & appetisers, all this time still not giving us our two waters with no ice. Its simple dip shit, pour water into two glasses & bring them to the table youve been skipping over the past 20 min. Anyways we finally get our waters after were halfway through our food and i tip his retarded ass nothing. He was playing dumb or legitimately forgot, either way no appology or anything else for that matter. Then when we checkout the wife of the owner gives us this dirty look & asked if everything was ok. I just replied the food was good anyways... & i really should've just complained on what happened but i'm now doing it here instead. Fire whoever that retarded young waiter kid is & get your daughter back in there, she actually understands customer service & other interacting with the public normal things. The foods great just dont mess with dining in if you see a young kid waiting, it'll be frustrating at the least. My family member was pleased with the food but the service was the exact opposite of what i had previously told him of the resturant. I recently visited and reviewed Yummy's which I thought was okay for Denton. I will caveat my review by saying I got slightly different foods so it isn't a true apples to apples comparison. At yummy's I had the falafel sandwich. At international food I had the falafel appetizer and a chicken and portabello dish. The falafel is better at Yummy's. Mine was overcooked and too flat/thin at International. The salad was very good and I added the falafel to the salad which was enjoyable. The chicken dish came and I actually had to figure out what it was on the plate. The chicken breast could hardly be called that. It was small, thin, tough and covered in melted cheese...like really bad Mexican. The portabello was covered in feta, red peppers and artihokes and looked very good. Unfortunately there was something off with it, maybe me having to look at the chicken did it to me. The whole dish was a disappointment. A number of people came in and out while I was there and the staff was exceptionally friendly. I may come back just for thy reason but I'll probably just go to Yummy's or wait until I get back to Houston. read more

First, just a heads up, the sign actually says "Green Zatar" (we almost drove past it looking for International Foods). This was one of the best Med. meals that we've had. My husband and I eat at Greek/Lebanese/Mediterranean places nearly every week (we just crave those flavors) and this place was well worth the drive from N. Ft Worth. It is a bit of a hole in the wall but it's quaint inside and the service couldn't be warmer or friendlier. We started with the Zatar Bread and falalels. That bread was so good--warm, salty and just the perfect amount of olive oil and feta. The falafels are flat disks but not overcooked (i.e. too crunchy/dry)--they were piping hot and just had enough crunch outside and tender inside. Believe me, we've had some bad falafel experiences... The main courses were: Chicken Biryani for the husband--spicy and delicious; and Beef Mousaka for me--nice crust of cheese on top and then creamy eggplant and beef inside. I ate every last bite and I normally do not eat red meat. I usually stick to chicken with hummus/babaganoush and dolmas but I really wanted to try a new dish today. I am so glad that I did. Yum! We ate every last thing that we were served (except for the salad--that was the only forgettable thing). Overall, great experience and will definitely be going back. read more

For the price, this place is mediocre, at best. My whole office ordered lunch from this place and for $24, my co-worker got a container that was ALMOST half full. There are several Greek restaurants nearby that have much better food for the price. Also, when my co-worker arrived, she noticed that all the prices were about $4 more than stated on the website. When my co-worker pointed this out, no accommodations were made. Don't waste your time when you can drive about 5 minutes down the road and have a small feast for less money! Very disappointed.
