We walked into this restaurant on our rainy Saturday afternoon to be greeted by warmth, friendliness, and a very homey atmosphere. Kim quickly allowed us to choose a table, proceeded to serve drinks and make a very honest and bold recommendation. When asked, what's the best thing on the menu? She said, if you close your eyes and point anything to the menu, you'll land on a winner. Well, she wasn't wrong! The three of us all had something different and everything was very tasty. We started off with the smoothest baba ghanoush I've ever had in my life! It was dotted with a beautiful olive in the middle. The presentation was comparable to a lot of high end restaurants, but with Mom and pop prices. We started with a greek salad and then I enjoyed the Chicken Scalappine and it was light, but satisfying. After finishing off with some baklava, I perused the market items and found some "hard to find ingredients" for a Persian dish that I would like to make. Although we were the only ones when we arrived, by the time we left two other tables had parties seated. Made me realize that I was late to the party on this hidden gem in Denton! When I Googled them, looked at "full menu", the prices were $5.99 for most of the appetizers and $17.99 for lamb kebab with a smattering of grilled veggies and some rice. Reasonable. We walked in, perused the menu, and wow, the prices have gone up since last updated on Google!!! The appetizers are roughly $10 and the lamb kebab is $35. There are a few menu items for less, but a lot was $35. I brought it to his attention and he said he would get it fixed. read more

Green Zatar is an absolute gem. From the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the owner and staff, genuinely some of the most hospitable people I've encountered in a restaurant setting. The space is clean, bright, and inviting, with a relaxed, family vibe that makes you feel immediately at ease. There is even a small grocery area, notably some of what they serve so you can go home with some ingredients or teas. Ordered the beef souvlaki , baba ghanoush, hummus, and a salad. The beef souvlaki in particular was phenomenal, truly one of the best meats I've ever tasted. Tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Easily in my top five of all time. Every dish was fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and delicious. Extra pita was brought without hesitation when asked, and every interaction felt welcoming and like you were family . Some have mentioned the price, but I found it absolutely fair for the quality and care that clearly goes into the food. You can taste the love and attention in every dish. It's surprising that the place isn't packed, it's tucked away in a not busy area with some construction , but absolutely worth seeking out. If you're craving Mediterranean food, GO. You won't regret it. Five stars, ten out of ten, I'd give more if I could. read more

The chicken scallopini was delicious. Moist chicken, seasoned with artichokes and capers. We're new to Texas so finding a good Mediterranean restaurant was a must. We have lived in Denton for 18 years and did not know this place existed. I ran across some reviews online and decided to give it a try since we love Mediterranean food. We usually order various appetizers on our first try at a restaurant. Green Zatar did not disappoint. My husband and I shared baba ghanoush, tabbouli, and dolmas. All were delicious. The dolmas were served warm with a delicious sauce, which I was told is a secret family recipe. We decided we wanted a little more so we added the spanakopita. It was warm and gooey with creamy feta cheese. They are BYOB so we'll go for dinner next time and take a bottle of wine. Green Zatar is on Sunset Street off University so you won't stumble upon it accidentally. But now that we know where it is we will be back. read more

Nice atmosphere. The owners were incredibly nice with the husband preparing the food and the wife serving. The iced tea is an herbal blend im unfamiliar with but quite refreshing after being used to the boring sort.Reasonably quick service. Food was excellent. My gripes are with the prices (and I don't complain about this normally) in relation to serving size and expense involved with purchasing the ingredients. Im not one of those who expects a gut buster but this was definitely a "light lunch" by most standards and it cost us around $60. All in all a very pleasant experience. read more

We were up in Denton for a concert and were craving some authentic Mediterranean food, so Green Zatar felt like the obvious choice. The staff was very kind and attentive, and the food was pretty good! The hummus was some of the best we've ever had. Stopped by for lunch while waiting for service at TCAP. Very pleased! Ordered the Chicken Biryani. The hostess warned it was spicy- I didn't taste much heat ‍ chicken was very tender and had great flavor. Good serving of food. Loved the giant plants in the lobby. Good place to eat, located in a strip mall in Denton. Went there after a graduation for a relaxing meal. The staff was nice and the food was pretty good. I enjoyed the chicken kabob more than the gyro meat, but that's just my preference. The strip mall it's in is older and has been kept up as well as they can, but it's still older. Every component of the meal was perfectly cooked, wonderfully seasoned, and appealingly presented. We were warmly welcomed and graciously served by a lovely person, helpful, fun, but not hovering. The environment was inviting. The music was the perfect accompaniment to our meal. There was just the right amount of light. I loved the gorgeous collection of glass bottles on display. What a hidden gem. We were in Denton looking for an impromptu place to dine and wanted to avoid town center given traffic and crowds. Yelp helped us find this deliciously ethnic family owned business that's been around for decades. Wonderful homemade Mediterranean/Greek fare. From the homemade hummus to the spanakopita to the moussaka to the baklava it was all delectable. Service was good as well with everyone there super friendly and helpful. I love it when I stumble on a true gem! I was driving around on a rainy night looking for a quiet place to get dinner, and turned down Sunset. Frankly, the name caught my eye and we took a chance. We had a pita bread appetizer that had a special house blend of herbs, the signature Zatar, feta, and olive oil that was truly unique and delicious. So glad I tried it! The lamb kabob was beautifully marinated superbly flavorful and moist. And since you asked, I'm a third generation Texan, raised in a house only a block from the restaurant, and I have learned to love lamb if it's well done. You should try it too. My wife had the Chicken Biryani, and swears by it. For desert we Baklava and hot Persian tea (w/cardamom) and we both highly recommend both. Find this place, you'll like it. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for a long while! The opportunity finally came last week when I had a ton of errands to run in the same area and was starving. After conferring with my husband on the phone I decided to call in an order. Now, there were no pictures of the menu on Yelp, so I had to go to the website. The website listed a very enticing menu, but did not include prices. I eat similar cuisine often enough, I figured I had an idea of the ballpark, so I went ahead with calling in the order. Celine was so sweet, helpful and patient. I was exhausted and could barely remember my order when on the phone with her. I ordered their Zatar Bread and then got a gyro for my husband. Since she said the gyro didn't come with a side, I added a side of fries. At this point I couldn't remember the name of the entrée I wanted to order and tried to describe it. She knew the one I wanted and even made additional suggestions. I was very pleased with her service, but when I asked what the difference in price was, I got some sticker shock. Apparently the entrees are in the $14-20 range and what I had ordered was $19.99. I'm not great on the fly with changing an order and was blanking on the rest of the menu items, so I stuck with the order as it was. She told me 20 minutes and that ended up being the perfect amount of time to finish up my errands. When I arrived I only had to wait a couple of minutes while it appeared that they were double checking everything. They have a small waiting area, but there are so many tables it's hard to imagine that they need it. There was also a charming little store area off to the right that Celine told me was kept on from the original business in the building. I was a bit bewildered when she came over juggling all the containers, but was pleased when I realized she waited to put them into the bag until she told me what was in each container. She then separated out the salad into a different bag, away from the hot items. Excellent attention to detail by Celine. I paid $39 and took my loot home. I ordered the Bakhtiari Kebab, which was $19.99 and the menu stated it was a combination of chicken and beef tenderloin on a skewer with bell pepper, mushroom and onion, served with rice and a salad. We ordered their famous Zatar Bread, which she had mentioned was $4.99. So I guess the gyro and fries together came out to about $10. The Zatar bread smelled amazing. I tried to think of a way to describe the taste and the spices, but there were so many layers of flavor I had a difficult time pinning it down. It's fabulous though, you should definitly get it. I feel a dining experience here wouldn't be complete without it and $4.99 is a good price. My husband liked the gyro, though he didn't care for the pickles that were on there. He wasn't sure why exactly, I guess it tasted different than he expected. The fries tasted fine, but weren't very crisp. Overall, it was a fair portion for $10. The salad leaked all over the place so I was relieved she had separated out the hot and cold stuff. I would have been so bummed if the entire meal was soggy. It tasted okay, but it was so wet and messy I just tossed it after a few bites. I guess they need a sealed container for their to go salads. Besides the salad fiasco, the Bakhtiari Kebab was quite good. There were four pieces each of the chicken and beef tenderloin. I actually thought it tasted extremely good and was cooked well. I found the beef tenderloin had good spices and was cooked correctly. The chicken was very tender and flavorful, I'll definitely order the chicken again. The rice also had a lot of spices, but it was not overwhelming, it was just right. I enjoyed the meal, I just think the price is too expensive for the portion. As great as the quality was, I still felt I paid too much. In fact, I'm left with the impression that the prices are super high, but I have no way of knowing if this is true for the restaurant as a whole, because they didn't have a to go menu when I asked. I really wish they would either print up some to go menus or add prices to their website. I'm still happy with the meal and would return, just not often. I would recommend you check it out, just be ready to empty your wallet. You might think it's worth it after you have the Zatar Bread. :) read more

Holy Pita bread, Batman! I cannot believe I've lived in Denton so long and have missed out on this family owned and operated gem! If you get the occasional craving for hummus and baba ghanoush then you simply must go in. Do not be dismayed at the humble strip mall that surrounds the small place. Go across the street to Kroger, get some wine as it is BYOB and peruse the pictures on Yelp so you can plot what all you're going to try. We ordered the Zatar bread, naan covered in fresh herbs, olive oil and feta. It was so good that we ordered another later in the meal. The Veggie Combo comes with the dips I mentioned above, some saffron rice, two homemade dolma and a single solitary falafel. I've only had homemade dolma once and it is soooooo good. You can tell fresh from the usual canned dolmas that most buffet places sling out. The hummus and baba g are the freshest and best I have ever had in my life. And, I've eaten A LOT of this stuff. Super lemony and garlicky and I loved it. My hubby ordered the lamb gyro plate with a side of tomato and raw onion. Delicious, small cut but oh so good. I went out on a limb and ordered beef mousakka, which reminded me of lasagna but instead of noodle, the layer was an eggplant and lots of cheese. Nothing remained on the table once we scarfed everything down with our friends. I hoarded the leftover rice to put in a soup but no scraps were left. The owner even came out and took a picture with our group. So, what are you waiting for? I seriously am thinking about that Zatar bread now and cannot WAIT to go back and try some new things! There is even a modest display of authentic items that you can buy (lemon juice, olive oil, etc) so peruse that for sure. Life is too short to eat boring food! read more

Also the atmosphere is unlike any other place I have been in Denton and was super relaxed and had a warm, at-home feeling. I try to never give 5 stars to a restaurant based on just one visit, no matter how good it is. You just never know if that's their normal or an aberration. When we first tried Green Zatar I was very tempted to break that rule however. Tonight we went back for our second visit and it was even better than the first. So I happily award them a fifth star that they very much deserve. Tonight I tried the Chicken Biryani. It was just fantastic. Spicy without being hot or overbearing, chicken so tender you don't need a knife, and the rice is like they harvested a cloud. Add in another serving of their delicious Zatar Bread, a wonderful little (NA) drink called Mango Nectar, and it really was a night to remember. Finally, I have to mention our waiter. He was such a friendly guy. Eager to help, to answer questions, it's just always so nice to get a server who excels at his job. It makes the whole experience better, and tonight was no difference.
