The old fashion donuts are my favorite but I do feel like there could be a bit more flavor, like the cherry should taste more Cherry. The blueberry one too. Greenbush recently opened a branch on the Far East side of Madison, making this East Sider extremely happy! A major plus for Greenbush is that they are open until 6 pm--no weird, shortened hours that make it impossible to get there in time for their amazing donut selection. Hands down, there are no better donuts around! The chain donut shops pale in comparison to this local gem. Greenbush has a wide variety of donuts and my personal favorite, apple fritters. They are the size of your head! Light, fluffy, and decadent--these donuts are a real treat. The shop is located by where the former American TV and appliance used to be on High Crossing Blvd. It is easy to get to and the young men staffing the counter are courteous and professional. read more

If I could give them 10 stars I would. I placed a large order a week ago prior to the insanely cold polar vortex hit our area. The order was for Wednesday the coldest day (-30 degree weather before windchill). Tuesday they called to confirm if I still planned on picking up the order, I said yes. Wednesday morning I showed up and realized the only reason they opened was for my order. They made a small amount of donuts for the public but they were gone by the time I walked in the door at 8:30 am. On top of amazing customer service and DELICIOUS donuts, they gave me a deal on braving the weather and helped carry all the donuts to my car. These donuts made a lot of people happy! Everyone thought they were delicious. The fritters are as big as your head, I think the cherry are the best. Try the blueberry cake donut with maple frosting, ohhh so good! So disappointed. New to the area and this place was "voted" best bakery so I figured it would be good. I went by to get some donuts for the office and they were average at best. They sort of tasted stale/dry. We were all in agreement that even Dunkin donuts are way better. Not to mention I had to repeat the order at least four times - she couldn't comprehend that I wanted two dozen donuts. But, I'll give two stars just because I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I finally stopped here this afternoon when I was nearby. I selected a variety of donuts to taste. I did not buy a fritter though!! I have tried one of the cake style (blueberry) & one of the filled crullers. Both had great texture and taste. I'll let you know what we think of the rest when we've tried them. My only suggestion to the bakery is that nothing is labeled so for a "newb" like me and both of the other customers in the store we had to have the employee tell and show us when it was each of our turns. It's everything you love about the original location, plus better lighting, more space, and easier parking. I stopped in on a Friday evening around 5 or so to pick up a dozen donuts to share with my boyfriend's family while camping with them that weekend. While heading over I was a little worried the selection would be picked over due to the later hour/lack of college students needing donuts at all hours of the day but the cases were full and the donuts were fresh! I got two each of the caramel, raspberry, and strawberry Rabbi's Delights (filled crullers), then let my boyfriend round out the order with two cinnamon rolls, two Fruity Pebbles donuts, and two Oreo bismarcks. Service was friendly and the counter person answered all my BF's questions about what was what. The donuts were packed perfectly so nothing got squished on our journey and everything lasted to the next morning without drying out. Quality and flavor is identical to the Regent Street location. I have many fond memories of the original location and it's a little closer to my home, but I think in the future I'll be more likely to pick up donuts from the east side while running errands near the mall or heading to a movie in Sun Prairie. read more

just stopped in again tonight and I have to say the experience was a lot better! The cases were fully stocked and there were many options that weren't there the last time! I got to try out the red velvet donut (yes, it tastes as good as it sounds) along with my regular favorites. I think it just depends on what time you come for it can be hit or miss. A little something I would recommend would be to set up something online that shows which flavors are being offered for the day. I know the red velvet is one of my new favorites but the worker informed me they aren't made every day and there isn't a set schedule for when they have them which is kind of disappointing because I'll have to come in and look if I want to know if they have it (same applies to the fruity pebble donuts which I know are popular as well) I hope this is an idea greenbush will consider in the future! read more

Overall, I was pretty satisfied with Greenbush's offerings. The dough was not bland, the glazes and frostings not too sugary, and the elements blended well. Breakdown: Cake donuts The blueberry maple glaze was a pretty good combination. The oreo had a good crust and light topping flavors. A moister and doughier cake would have improved this. Yeast donuts The yeast with vanilla frosting was soft, lower on the sweetness scale, (but just above the point of being bland,) the frosting was a medium on the smooth/gritty scale. The flavor was outstanding. Sour Cream old fashioned The plain had good density and good sweetness- not too overwhelming, and good for dunking. The chocolate was very good. A recommended item here. The cocoa added an element of density and a whole new aspect of flavor. Good paired with coffee. The blueberry was good. Very good flavor, the glaze was good. The cinnamon sugar was good. Not too sweet, all things considered The cinnamon roll had a light glaze, a very light crust, and mild flavor. It wasn't the heaviest filling item on the menu and went light on the palatte. Stopped in to this new Greenbush Bakery for the first time this weekend. Wasn't really sure what to expect. It's a small and simple set up. A handful of small tables to sit at, a drink cooler with various beverages to choose from, and a self service coffee station are all in the main area. The glass display case/front counter has two registers set up and there is a large price board up on the wall behind that. Simple and utilitarian. I was in at about 10am, and there were quite a few donuts to choose from. There was a line, but both registers were open so it was moving along quickly. I didn't have to wait long. I picked out 3 different flavors of old-fashioned glazed donuts. Cherry, blueberry, and chocolate. I would have liked to try other donuts, but nothing was labeled so I wasn't sure what was what, and with a line, I didn't want to be "that person" - you know what I mean. I picked the old-fashioned because those are probably my favorite type of donuts anyway, and I knew I wouldn't be let down. The donuts themselves were AWESOME! The cherry especially, so yummy. I got a cup of coffee to go with, it was nothing special. Not bad at all. I will be back to try more things for sure. read more

Many years ago went int Green Bush Bakery and a member of the waitstaff called the police on me. I'm an African American person and I didn't do anything wrong. When I returned later to discuss the situation with the owner he refused to hear my side of the story and relied on a video without audio. Before this incident I was a patron of this bakery for over 30 years. I haven't been there since. I would suggest folks especially those of color boycott this bakery. I have to admit, I've been to the Regent St location, and it was always slim pickins. There were never any of the legendary apple fritters I've read about, and the other doughnuts were good, but they weren't "this is going to turn me into Jabba the Hut" good. I've read that you have to be there early, or the glorious fritters are long gone. I thought 8 am, was early, I was wrong. Fast forward to now, and they have a location on the far east side of Madison, which has ample parking, is easy to get to, and lo and behold the mighty fritters were aplenty at 10 am! My dining companions thought I was silly for only purchasing a fritter, and I did question whether it would be enough. I laugh now though, because the fritter was huge, somewhere around the equivalent of 4 or 5 doughnuts. It was crispy, chewy, deliciousness that overpowered me early on. I say early on, because I could only eat about 1/4 of it magical-ness. But greedy eyes were upon my 3/4 remaining magical fritter, and I had to protect it with threats and dirty looks, until I could bring myself to eat more of it. Next time I will try a cherry fritter. Will I cry tears of joy? Will I have to have my sword at the ready to fend off greedy eyes? Probably so. I am ready. read more

Simply scrumptious! I had a chance to chat with the owner, can't recall her name at the moment, but she was so upbeat and excited for a Friday evening! We chatted about their new location, getting the word out and making the East Side spot visible, and the fun fact about their "Donut of the evening"! A new employee had made the mistake of making a Boston cream filled, Oreo topped raised donut with banana-flavored cream instead. What fun!! I ordered one and my crew of four each ordered one as well. They were interesting in a good way, the banana flavor tasted was on the fake side and too subtle to balance the Oreo topping. But it was still fun!! The new space is very "far East Side", clean, spacious, 2000's decor, and all the same Donutty options as on Regent Street! I am definitely looking forward to returning, updating my review, and crafting it as creatively as my other Greenbush location review. read more

I love this place. They have a large selection of rolls and doughnuts to pick from and the staff is always very friendly. I call in at least twice a week and order doughnuts to be picked up later that same day. If by chance something arises with my order they always call me to let me know what it is. I have never had a bad doughnut, lemon filled, strawberry filled, apple fritter, cinnamon roll or bad service ever. I will be going there for as long as I live in this city. read more

An appointment yesterday brought me near the new Greenbush bakery - it was like donut fate! I missed the sign on my first drive-by, but they're located in a newly built strip mall right behind 'Mr. Brews'. It's a larger space than the Regent location with a coffee station and a seating area. They unfortunately did not have my usual favorite (cake donut with white icing & coconut), so, on recommendation from the pleasant owner, I tried a blueberry/maple cake donut and a coconut raised donut. The cake donut was perfectly delicious (doesn't take the place of my fave though), but the raised donut was pretty bland. The owner and staff were helpful and engaging, which was a welcome change from my late-night stops at Regent. read more

Stopped in to try this places doughnuts for ourselves to see if the hype was true! I want to go on the record to tell the world or at least all of Wisconsin!!!!! It's true thier tasty sweet treats are wonderful. So many flavors, so many styles, so many toppings to choose from. A few of our instant favorites were the huge apple fritters, the old fashion styled doughnuts, oreo custard filled, bavarian creames, and the maple bacon frosted one. I reccomend the next time you know you will have a house full of kids or adults to order ahead of time a few dozen or stop in early and pick out what looks good. Doughnuts are roughly $1.00 each except for the HUGE apple fritter is more expensive. They now have 2 locations! One downtown Madison and one in Sun Prarie, WI. So happy they opened up a second location! Greenbush has the best donuts I've ever had. Nothing special, just consistently amazing. An omg the fritters...so awesome. Plus, the east side usually doesn't run out as fast as Regent. My fiancé and I are regulars that haven't found a donut we didn't like here. Greenbush provided the donuts for our wedding. Ordering was really easy - we just had to submit an order by email 3 weeks ahead of time. We were able to pick from a variety of donuts, frostings, and toppings (including even choosing sprinkle colors). I was very happy with all of the customization. We were charged $1 per donut, which was great. Guests commented all night about how tasty the donuts were. We then were able to pick up the donuts day of. Super easy! Highly recommend! read more
