While it does feel a little bit sticky at times, the fact that they screen some nice films every now and then is a great idea. I attended this cinema with my children for a special screening of a movie with my three young children and husband. The facility was overall dirty and run down, and the smell in the auditorium was quite awful. The seats are beat and need to be upgraded. It definitely took away from the excitement of the first movie we have ever seen together as a family. I've been to many theaters over the years and this one is the worst. As someone who adores history and historical buildings, I was really excited to go... however, I will absolutely not return. read more

I was lucky enough to take advantage of the deal to rent out a private theatre for 10 people! We had a great time singing along to the DVD we brought from home and got to play on the big screen. What a wonderful bonus that they also sell alcoholic beverages now as well! The building is newly renovated, and looks beautiful. They've kept the old charm and simply made repairs to bring it up to code. The new owners are great to work with and extremely welcoming. They are also very diligent when it comes to sanitation. We were required to wear masks until we got to our seats in our private booked theatre. The bathrooms were spotless and frequently cleaned. Popcorn was perfect and there are many great new concession options. I highly recommend this theatre, and if you haven't been since it's changed ownership: I guarantee you will have a better experience now. Support locally owned businesses! read more

This place is falling apart. I don't know if the current owners can't afford repairs or what is going on, but it's bad. On a rainy or wet day they'll have to place mop buckets all over the building to catch ceiling leaks. The place doesn't seem to have been cleaned anytime recently, and last time we were there a psychotic dude was wandering around the theater ranting to himself. When we asked the employees to do something about it they basically shrugged. The actual movie experience is also a mess. I've been to several movies where the volume was too low and the employees didn't know how to fix it. The thin walls mean that a loud movie in the theater next door can be audible to the point of ruining your viewing (as happened to us when we saw a movie with Ford v. Ferrari playing next door). It's such a bummer, I want to support a local independent theater, but the Greenfield Garden experience has gotten so unpleasant and gross that I'll pay twice the price and drive twice as far to have a civilized experience in Hadley or Amherst. read more

Man, I love this place so much! The Garden Cinema has to be one of our favorite movie theaters! The reasons that we love it so much are that it is a small local cinema, it has a ton of character, and when you go to a movie during an off peak time you are generally guaranteed to have the whole cinema to yourself. The past 5 times we have been to this theater my partner and I were able to see the movies alone which meant that we didn't have to hold back on the laughing and crying. The staff here is also really great and it is nice that the theater always has great movies playing. The theater could use a little remodeling and cleaning, but overall it is great! read more

Been coming to this place since I was 4, back when their was only one screen. An old Godzilla movie was my 1st flick I seen their. Now I bring my son to see all the cool movies. I love it -- how many downtowns still have a theater, without a giant parking lot yet? My compliments pretty much echo Judith's ... and one extra fillip is that in doing some renovations a year back, they pulled down what turned out to be a false wall which revealed the theater's original 1920s-era organ! After a bit of restoration, it has pride of place in the lobby. Prices are dirt cheap, and they have $6.50 matinees. That being said, it's a clean place, with modern seating, and a perfectly good place to see a show. read more

This theater is the only local place to catch a movie. The theaters are old and dated. The snacks are expensive and admission is average price. There are ceiling tiles missing from the ceiling and the sound system sucks. That being said, the place is seldom packed and it's usually fairly clean. I wouldn't wait in line to see a blockbuster here, but it's okay for an occasional visit to see a new release. read more

I just brought my daughter here to see a movie and I was very impressed with the new ownership. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Lobby, theater, and bathrooms were all very clean. Owners have done a great job so far of improving without sacrificing any nostalgia. I am thankful that this theater is being preserved. I will definitely be returning! read more

What a place! Why go to a soulless super maxi modern theater where everything is way too expensive when you can go to this one-of-a-kind, historic venue?? Super cheap matinee and Tuesday shows, solid snack selection (free refills on large drinks and popcorn!) and amazing Simpsons pinball if you have time to wait before your movie. The owners and all the employees are lovely and so very kind, they keep the atmosphere very friendly and welcoming, and take such good care of customers! I love that they show locally made films, too! The facilities may be a little tiny bit rough around the edges, but hey, it the charming antique ambiance! A nice,old fashioned theatre. Although they have broken up a big, old theater into many small venues, it is a treat to go to the Garden Cinema in Greenfield, MA. The people who work there are nice, the popcorn is good (but could be a lot better with real butter), and the. atmospheric, decades old organ in the lobby brings back old memories. If you're looking for a quaint little movie theater with a rich history and a decent movie selection, then the Greenfield Garden Cinemas is the place for you. I've been seeing movies here since I was about four years old, and every time I go back I'm almost crushed by a giant wave of nostalgia. It's a humble little place that makes the most of what it has without trying to mimic some of the fancier and more grandiose theaters in existence, which makes attending a movie here feel more like a treat than an entitlement. When the building was built in 1929, it was intended to be a performance theatre with a stage instead of movie screens. It wasn't sectioned off into separate cinemas until the mid-1980s, but as soon as you walk in you can tell that it hasn't lost much of its class. The original red and gold sign catches your eye as you walk in, right next to its billboard which is always up-to-date with seven of the most popular new releases. The aroma of popcorn wafts through the air and yanks you away from the ticket window to the concession stand, where there are some video games and a pinball machine if you've got some extra quarters and time to burn. The theater's individual cinemas have all been renovated fairly recently with new chairs as soft as clouds and a few 3-D capable screens, but each one still has its own personality. The cinemas that used to be part of the balcony, for example, have a big stage-like section that acts as an invisible barrier between the screen and the seats, presumably so that nobody accidentally falls into the cinema below. It's not the cleanest theater I've ever been to, however, and the bathrooms leave much to be desired. The women's bathroom in particular seems as though the designers were so worried about squeezing as many toilets they could into the small room that they forgot that people would actually be using them. Trying to go to the bathroom after a sold-out movie feels like you're an animal being herded to the slaughterhouse, and the unrecognizable stains on the walls certainly add to this effect. The ticket prices are reasonable: $6.50 for matinees and $8 for evening showings with discounts for children, students, and seniors. The price of concessions isn't too bad either, with a wide variety of candy, soda, and free popcorn refills. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, too, and it's easy to reserve an individual cinema for a birthday party or special event. Parking may be a bit tricky to figure out if you've never been here before. There's a parking lot across the street from the theater next to the fire station if you can't get a spot in front of the theater, but parking there isn't free until 6pm on weekdays. The theater is also handicap accessible, although "accessible" definitely doesn't mean "easy". Right when you walk in there are stairs headed down toward the concession stand, and although there's an elevator off to the side for those who might need it, finding it is a lot like looking for a three-letter word in a word search: it's very well-hidden if you're not looking hard enough for it. Despite some of its minor flaws, the Greenfield Garden Cinemas is a wonderful small-town movie theater and I highly recommend you go there if you're in the Greenfield, MA area. read more

The old timey charm made me feel like I was in a historic theater but the new age theater systems and high tech sound system made for a wonderful experience.
