This movie theatre is one of the best places on the planet. They show niche movies, they show current movies, and their cult classic nights always ensure a full house. I know they partner with Amherst College's film club as well. They host special screenings with talks beforehand. The theaters range from small to super small and intimate, offering a unique viewing experience that no other place in the area can provide. This cinema is ensuring the film doesn't die and that no one is left behind. They were particularly influential in my film journey because of all the international films that they show. I've seen Norwegian, Brazilian, French, and Japanese movies to name a few. Thank you for such a great experience and I hope to return sometime soon. Where to begin.....???? Spent an hour on a bus and walked half a mile in the pouring rain to see a movie that was allegedly SOLD OUT. Upon arrival, both front desk staff were rude and short with myself and my friend. We were forced to buy tickets for a later showing, and during our purchase a group of women came in with a ticket they weren't using because a friend couldn't make it. We made a comment to the front desk about how we wished there was one more ticket so we could see the movie. They told us that we were actually the ones winning because we got the bigger theater. I replied by saying that we were going to miss our dinner because of their mishap and I received a half-hearted apology. Definitely not a win. Then as we were walking out, they sold a ticket to the woman who came in right behind us for the showing we tried to see. This means there were actually two unoccupied seats in the theatre. Easily my favorite place in Amherst. The staff is super friendly, the special events are wonderful and give you an opportunity to see movies that you otherwise wouldn't have the chance to, and the food is good! We need more cinemas like this. It gets especially popular during Oscar season because it's the only cinema in the area that'll play the oscar-nominated movies. read more

Great little theatre in Amherst. Most of the screens are small, but one of them is large. They have a nice selection of local beer that they let you bring into the movie with you. I saw Lion here the other day and loved it. Seating is not reserved, and they actually don't even check your tickets on the way in. It's a trust system, since you buy upon entering and just proceed directly to your theatre. Since the theatres are small it does fill up so get there early! read more

Im so happy that this exists especially since Northampton cinema closed. Live that I can keep up with offbeat and indie movies I love. I can keep up with Sundance and other film festivals and know that I will probably get to see those movies! They keep a classy yet not snooty vibe. This is such a cute, unique movie theater that I just cannot get enough of. They typically show more independent movies, or documentaries that you might not be able to see anywhere else. This is definitely my favorite cinema in town! It's very sleek & modern, but not sterile. The film selection is always great & especially good around Oscar time since they, along with their companion theater (Pleasant Street), have most of the nominees for best film. And the prices are really reasonable, about $7 for a student and $8 w/out a student ID (for matinee shows). They also have a great snack bar! The theaters themselves are small so it's best to get there early to buy your tickets. I've been there about 25 minutes in advance and had them call out 'SOLD OUT' as soon as I got through the door. So if you really want to catch a certain flick, I recommend getting there in advance and them roaming around the town after you have your tickets in hand. But it's worth the wait, plus you can always grab a bite to eat at one of Amherst's yummy restaurants. read more

Yes, I like it. I do not see a lot of movies here, but I don't see a lot of movies period. I love that the whole plaza is evolving and that you can get a Go Berry before or after a movie. I love the cheese to sprinkle on the popcorn. Hipster attitude with some of the staff, but it's an arthouse theater, right? I love the film series which focus on different directors, but I was really surprised how empty some of the Woody Allen movies were. But I also don't get to a lot of movies so I'm not sure if it's a lack of advertising and outreach or what. A whole younger generation is missing these films. It is true that most of the audience is 45 and up.... We are long-time supporters of Amherst Cinema. I am so glad it's here. read more

I love this theater, and just saw "The Artist" with fresh popped corn and lots of real butter ( a guilty pleasure). My only complaint has to do with the seating. There just is not a whole lot of leg room, and at 5'7" with very long legs, I spent a lot of time shifting. I just wish that whomever designed the screening rooms took that into consideration. I am not the only person who has complained of it. But it is what it is. So I heartily recommend that if you have long legs, or are a large person, to sit in the first row (there is ample room there, but your neck will probably ache in exchange) or the row of seats before the break of another set of seats. Customer service was great! Love to see a smiling face when I plop down my hard earned cash! read more

A good change from the commercialized scene. The theaters maybe small except for 1 but the smaller style makes for a better experience. You'll ditch the megaplex feeling and appreciate the more intimate vibe and if that doesn't happen order some beer or wine. I will be seeing more pictures here soon. read more

I have so much love for this place. It's brighter and larger than its sister in Northampton, but still has cream of the crop movies at decent prices that you wouldn't see anywhere else. Also, they have the best concessions anywhere! Flavored salts for my popcorn, vegan brownies AND italian sodas? Yes please! They also have baby-friendly shows. I'm not a parent, nor do I wish to become one anytime soon, but I've sat in enough theatres with screaming children to appreciate this move on their part (and also know in advance which screenings to avoid!). One minor complaint? Parking is a huge pain. But I've parked in the adjacent bank lot after hours with no trouble. Don't waste your time elsewhere, except maybe Pleasant Street. This is as good as it gets. read more

I really enjoy this cinema and the fact that it is non-profit and I totally support that! I do feel sorry for their employees because they probably don't get paid well, because well you've guessed it. Pleasant Street Theater is way up their in customer service but there shouldn't be such things as customer service at a non-profit. Paradoxical. The better selections usually end up at this bigger, newer theater. I saw Exit Through the gift Shop twice here and the first time the end of the film ended up cutting up all weird so I didn't get the ending. I like that I can have coffee and a vegan cookie with a nice film. And I appreciate their events they hold including a showcasing of a certain film maker or student work. read more

This is not the type of theater you would expect in such a small town. It is absolutely beautiful inside! From the snack bar to the comfortable seats, gorgeous screen, and interesting film choices I wouldn't change a thing. Even the employees have a great attitude about things. I would go here any day over the personality-less and overpopulated theaters nearby like the one at the Hampshire Mall. Going to see a movie here is less of a thing to do when there's nothing else to do and more of an event. One of my favorite things about living in the valley! Keep supporting small, independent, unique films and I will keep coming! Also, you should check out their sister theater (Pleasant St.) in NoHo! This is a good place to see independent and/or foreign films that aren't screened at Cinemark. I've been here three times to see Dear White People, Lady Bird, and I, Tonya. I would only recommend visiting the cinema if the film were screened in the larger room. It can be a bummer to see a film in a tiny room on a small screen. The cost of a ticket is reasonable and the popcorn is great. read more

This is a theatre done correctly, with screens whose girth will not abandon you in a too-widescreen projection pulling your eyes and head and reactions across the room, reasonable ticket prices, serving healthy snacks (including goat's milk yogurt and offering nutritional yeast for vegans' popcorn) alongside mandatory snow caps and the like, and offering truly choice films and events. Memberships for devotees are far from what you'd expect in price (cheaper, that is), and students receive discounts. Tucked behind Amhersts' main streets' storefronts, the theatre is modest, and understated, elegant and comfortable, truly enriching the community as it brings a life, crowds, and energy to Amherst that is not limited to the college population. read more

I've always dreamed of building my own movie theater - and somehow those bastards over at the Amherst Cinema snuck into my dreams and stole my ideas. Seriously, a very nice theater, very modern with a classic art deco touch. Incredibly comfortable seats, great tickets prices, stadium seating, and real butter on the popcorn. Can't beat that. The only downside in my opinion is that I can't see ALL movies in this theater, because it only shows the more indie stuff. Hell, I would recommend seeing a movie here even if it's not something that interests you, the theater is THAT nice. read more

The film selection is great, and I can even deal with the smaller screens (though I do enjoy the big screen of a multi-plex) - only problem is that the space between the rows of seats is very tight. I'm only 5'7" and my knees were crushed into the seat in front of me, and when the theater is full (which is common since the movies are great and the individual theaters are small) it's tricky business to cross your legs without kicking someone - and forget having a place to put your coat. read more

Rumors of "great film selection" are remnants of the past. Good seats, OK theaters (But, if I'm not the first 4 people in, I rarely get a 'Good position'), but when they stop having a rotation of new flicks it is all for nothing. Concessions is way too overpriced. I used to be a member of the organization and was happy to support them, but let that lapse a few months ago and now will opt for other options most times. I'll be the first to change this rating if things change, but the downward trajectory is no fun. read more

Brand new non-profit theatre showing hot indie films--I love it! Having grown up in this area, it's good to see the town taking on such an ambitious new project to revive the old Amherst Cinema. The tickets are reasonably priced around $6-8. You can also purchase them online, or get annual membership if you're a real movie lover. The seating is awesome (but doesn't recline). I saw "Babel" here and it was a great experience--they didn't even show those stupid commercials! And I must say, the concession stand is a real stunner--fresh popcorn with real butter, Pocky, homemade ice cream sandwiches, pastries, etc.... I'm in love. read more

This authentic little theater is tucked behind Amherst Coffee and Bank of America and definitely easy to miss. It gets my 5++ star review. This establishment screams, "I'm the best" and is certainly a flagship experience of downtown. Once you visit Amherst Cinema, it will be difficult to go back to the big-box theaters. Very cute and clean movie theater in Amherst Center. It usually shows independent/artsy movies. If you're a movie snob, this is your place.

This is a great place for a date night. My wife and i saw "The Artist" last night in the main theater, and the first thing we both realized was the age of the audience. Grown-ups filled the place. No talking teens, no over the top glow of text replies during the movie, and everyone one was there to enjoy the movie. I had a great XPA beer and my wife had a nice glass of Cab. What a treat it is to relax with a drink have incredible popcorn (no butter needed) and enjoy a wonderful movie. I will return for quality movies in a wonderful place. read more

Quaint, cute little theater that shows mostly offbeat indie and classic/cult films. It's a small place and there are only a few showings at once but this creates a cozy, comfortable atmosphere that you don't get at a big chain cinema. Good popcorn, great picture quality and a nice sloping theater so people can't sit right down in front of you and block your view. The only complaint I have is that the seats are somewhat uncomfortable, being just like plain slightly cushioned chairs with no reclining at all, which creates a problem for people with back problems. Otherwise, a nice place and one I would strongly recommend! They show some really cool movies here and ones that aren't currently showing in other theaters, so keep a look at the schedule. read more

Amherst Cinema has a great selection of films, many of which you can't find anywhere else in the valley. The seats are good enough and the theater is small but comfy. I haven't tried their concession stand, but they have quite a few options. The ticket prices are fair, and if you're a student with an ID, there is a discount. read more
