When I called the owner after the burial to report this bad behavior, rather than receiving an apology or explanation, I was curtly told that no employee there would do such a thing and that what he thew at me was likely just a box of Sunny Delight. Knoxville's National Cemetery was established during the Civil War and in the last 150 years now has over 9000 interments. Unlike others I have been to that are arranged in straight lines, Knoxville is arranged in a circular pattern surrounding a flagpole at the center. Though the main piece is a 50-foot tall marble Union soldier. It looks a bit like a fortress, complete with stained glass windows. The cemetery includes two Medal of Honor recipients and at least two Generals. I also spotted a number of "unknown Union soldier" markers. Listed on the National Historic Register, the cemetery has a circular design and is a patch of green in an urban, concrete, jungle. The cemetery has two Medal of Honor recipients, one from the Civil War and the second from World War II. In the northeast corner of the cemetery is the Union Monument. First erected in 1901, the bronze eagle on top of that monument was struck by lightning in August of 1904, shattering it and forcing the replacement of the roughly 50 ft high structure. Noted architects, Baumann Brothers designed the new structure in keeping with the previous design but with a Union soldier on top this time. It was finished on October 15, 1906. Also, of note to Tennessee VOLS fans is the gravesite of Brigadier General Robert Neyland and his wife Ada. This is a wonderful piece of Knoxville history and a great place to teach your kids about honor, service, and sacrifice. Memorial Day weekend is a wonderful day to visit when flags mark each grave.

This cemetery is in complete shambles with graves that are caving in, markers that are unrecognizable because dirt is piled up, and completely dead grass and dying trees. . I stopped by several weeks later to pick up something and they remembered who I was and were able to locate the certificate I needed. Everyone in my family has been through this mortuary at various times, and I would highly recommend them. This was the first time I had to do all of this with my sister who was out of town-just the two of us.
