You can rely on Dino at Greg's Automotive Service (GAS) to carefully diagnose your automotive problem BEFORE proposing a solution. For example, the driver's side window of my car stuttered several times before finally closing. This was especially irritating when I needed to lock and park the car but had to wait for the window to stutter several times before closing. When I took my car to the dealership for a repair estimate, I was told that the electric motor and all mechanical components associated with had to be replaced. The cost of doing so would be about $600. When I took the car to GAS, Dino diagnosed the problem and concluded that lubricating the mechanical components would likely solve the problem. The cost of doing that was about $550 less than the dealership's solution. The window's worked perfectly for years now. GAS' ability to diagnose a problem closely before offering solutions happened again when I took my car in for a loud whirring sound it made at highway speeds. The dealership proposed replacing both bearings. Dino proposed replacing only the noisy one. Finally, when I began hearing a rattling sound under the hood, GAS isolated the problem to one of the gears driven by the serpentine belt. Rather than replace the all the gears and the belt, GAS took the time to isolate and then replace the one offending gear. When my cars aren't under factory warranty, I will always take them to GAS. To do otherwise would be foolish. I suggest you take your cars to Greg's Automotive Service, too. read more

I brought my car in with an issue that they couldn't replicate once in the shop, and they double checked multiple times to make sure I wanted to do the costly preventative work. It ended up that wasn't the issue so had to bring my car back, and they gave me a discounted rate on the second fix and also got the part from a more affordable manufacturer. Quick, honest, reliable and like family! I have been taking all my vehicles to Greg's for over 20 years. They are always upfront with what the charges will be, they call if they find something that may run extra and give you an analysis of if you can wait to get it done or you must do it to preserve the car. They are very knowledgeable in foreign cars, they have worked on my 2013 BMW, 2004 VW and 2005 Nissan (has over 323,300 miles and still going thanks to the team at Greg's). Leo is like a father figure and has looked out for my sister and I cars lIke my dad used to do. Greg and his son Deno are super hospitable and congenial and go above an beyond. I took my truck in to replace the brake light and while Deno worked on the light Greg noticed my door was hard to close and generously fixed it for me without being asked. He said I could take that report to any mechanic and they'd know what to do, so I liked the transparency and that he didn't put pressure on me. While searching and trying garage after garage in NoVa searching for a reliable & honest place to have my Jeep worked on I finally found Greg's Automotive. I haven't been to another garage since. At most garages you walk out feeling like you have just been gouged. I realize everything is expensive in NoVa but I always feel like Greg has gave me a fair deal. The owner gave me a 1300 estimate to replace coolant tube because they had to take the engine apart I order to identify where the leak was, when I decided to have the car towed to another place the story changed saying they identified where the leak was to justify the 95 dollar diagnostic fee. This review is long overdue. Both my husband and I have visited Greg's on several different occasions over the last few years and have had only the best experiences! I first visited Greg's shortly after moving to Alexandria. Being a woman, I have found it necessary over the years to do my research once I am told the problems with my car, getting price estimates from several shops so as not to get ripped off. I had gone to another auto shop in Alexandria (to remain unnamed) and the men there attempted to charge me triple the price on a repair making me swear that I would find a new shop. I took a chance on Greg's and didn't look any further after that. First, Greg and his employees ALWAYS treated me with kindness and respect (not as if I were stupid). They answered my questions and explained the problems in detail and with patience. When I had a very bad problem and needed expensive parts, Greg took me into the garage, walked me under my own car and showed me what part I had, what had happened, discussed a couple of different options, and the benefits to each. And it ended up being cheaper than I thought! After being treated as completely ignorant by men in other repair shops and always dreading taking my car in for anything, I felt I had found a friend in Greg's. After using them for 3 years, I simply cannot recommend Greg's Automotive enough. The prices are competitive, they allow drop-offs before they open, they call you when it's done, they have even offered me coffee in the morning when they were making a pot. I've brought my Volkswagen Passat, over the past many years, to a half dozen places in Alexandria. By far, Greg's has been the best. Repairs have included suspension, engine repairs, brakes, and maintenance items like replacing fluids/timing belt/water pump/etc. He has always given me an accurate estimate to the actual repairs. and work is generally ready when he said it would be. I've never had to bring it back for something not done correctly (like I have for virtually every other place I've brought it to). For some bigger repairs, I've also brought it to the dealer for an estimate on the same repairs. His prices are significantly (maybe 35% or so) lower than the dealer for the same service. I brought my car in because the airbag light was on. When I dropped it off, the man behind the counter asked me if I had called the dealership about possible recalls. I told him I had not. He said that HE WOULD CALL THEM FOR ME. Maybe it was my own fault for trusting that they would do what they said they would do. However, they did not contact the dealership as they said. Later that week I found out there was in fact a recall for my airbag. Greg's Automotive charged me $650 for work that would have been free at the dealership. Either they are INCOMPETENT or DISHONEST, but which one of these qualities do you want in a mechanic? There are better options nearby. Avoid this shop. read more

I took it there because they said they could fix my coil and strut for 160.00 . Was told by another they would fix a left (shock ) strut and a coil for 455.00 !!! . Then they called me and said they had to fix the other side because it was ABOUT to break( not broken ) and they could not get one had to be bought in pairs (total BS) but what ya going to do drive all over the place to find a honest mechanic! I am traveling with my wife and two daughters. We are visiting Washington DC on route to our vacation in North Carolina. Here's the background: One day before our travels, I had my 2008 Chrysler T/C van serviced at a dealership in Ohio. It needed an oil change and new tires...usual care and upkeep. However, just before I took it in, the REAR a/c stopped blowing cold. The dealership "claimed" that they couldn't repair the rear expansion valve and instead "capped" the a/c lines so that the rear a/c unit would be rendered unusable. So, now I had to pay $300 to do a repair that was not needed in the first place. I had the "repair" done and went home to pack for vacation. Where we are now: After 7 hours of traveling, we stopped in Alexandria, Va. for the night...all was well. The next morning we left to tour Washington DC and low and behold no a/c and a horrible smell. Drove the morning with 88 degree outer temperature to do our touring. At about 3 pm, we decided we have to get this repaired before leaving for NC. Called many other Chrysler dealerships and got "gee, sorry you're traveling, we can't see your car until Monday". This would mean 3 days of layover in Va. Finally decided I might just go to Autozone and recharge the a/c and hope it worked. On the way to Autozone, we saw Greg's Automotive and they were OPEN! Pulled in an here's "the rest of the story": Al was behind the counter talking to a customer on the phone, and after he finished, I explained the situation. He called Eduardo over and they said they could look at the car. Long and the short of it, they found that one of the "caps" that the dealership put on fell off and all of the refrigerant was gone and the oil was all over the underside of the van. After a time, they figured a way to fabricate a plan to take the a/c line to an auto body shop and weld it closed since there were no "caps" available without ordering them. Al and Eduardo went above and beyond the call of duty, spent over 2 1/2 hours on the vehicle, drove to an auto body shop and repaired the van. Final cost...wait for it...$229. I don't know if the fabrication will hold, or if it will require further repair, but as it is now, we are on our way to a wonderful family vacation. I just moved to the area and am a first time owner of a care. I was pretty worried about trying to find a reliable auto place. I am so glad I found Gregs! I was rear-ended and took my car in to make sure nothing other than the bumper was affected. Greg took me under the car to show me that everything was okay, except for the alignment. I went back just recently for an oil change. The oil was actually leaking. He took into the garage once again to show me under the hood. And while I was waiting, they ordered pizza for lunch and insisted I eat with them! I never feel like they are trying to rip me off, even though I'm a young woman. Hello, Greg's automotive is good, make sure you talk to the owner Greg first before talking to anybody else. Greg is honest, when I got a used car, he put up my number plates with brand new screws and lug nuts and didnt charge me for it. However another employee I interacted with a few days later was trying to make money off me. When i reported that my car (Honda Civic 97) does not seem to have power, even before he looked under the hood he said that I needed a full fuel injection cleaning for $150. I mean at least make an attempt to look under the hood first mate and make it look believable. So my advise will be to talk to Greg first about the car problems and you should be ok. There are quite a few good reviews about this place and I think you should give this place a chance. I would have given this place a 5 star but the other employee has pissed me off a little with his armchair diagnosis and so it is 3 stars as of now. read more

My car was taken to Greg's Automotive Service & I'll be honest I first tested my care before and after I gave them a 5 star and posted a comment. It's been almost seven days that I had my car back from Greg's automotive service and I haven't had any issues with my Volkswagen 2017 Jetta gli. First time I took it to do an transmission fluid and oil change and they did a great job. Then in three days after I went back to change my brakes and they did a good job too. Price was fair he didn't charge me extra for bring my parts and fluids he did say that, "we do charge extra for bring your bring your Owen parts". But the mechanic was honest & knowledgeable about what he was saying. And I agree what he said because first if it was I and I had a shop I would charge customers for bring their parts and fluids and second if something happen to your car for not having the right part number or right fluid that would be the customer fault. But this mechanic was fair. I just wish he would of gave me the old brake pads and if I had extra oil or fluid transmission to gave it to me. But next I'll just ask if their was extra oil from the one I brought because that could me useful if my car eats a lot off oil knowing me I like to put the paddle to the mettle. Well anyways I just wanna give thanks to all the mechanics and Greg's automotive for everything they do know about Germany cars. After getting ripped off at another local mechanic (hint: located in Shirlington), I took my car to Greg's on a recommendation and I was happy with the service. I've been back a few times since, and I always felt like they were dealing with me fairly. You can leave your car there at night and often pick it up fixed the next day. Sometimes the price is more than they estimated, but I suppose that's the nature of the business, and they are always willing to show you the reason why on the car itself. For example, your car may require special steps or something else might be broken. I've never caught them doing anything dishonest, and the last time they found a cheaper part while I was waiting and actually saved me some money. I recommend trying them out. read more

I called BMW Alexandria for a new battery installed and they quoted $530.00. Aghast at paying such a fee for something I had always done myself before cars required a computer reset for something as simple as a battery change, I researched options and found Greg's. I spoke to Greg, the owner and a Greek from Thessaloniki, who assured me they were skilled working on BMW's and Mercedes' and he quoted me $330. After finding positive reviews on Yelp, I took my car to him and ultimately paid $270.00, about half what BMW wanted to charge. I am definitely going back when I need service. As he explained, their only limitation with BMW repairs is if it involves 3 computer modules on the car; in those cases it must go to a BMW service center. Greg commented that apart from those 3 modules, they can AND DO repair anything else on a BMW. read more

On one of the hottest days of the summer, my car stopped on me. The radiator had a leak that cause the car to overheat. Got the car running again by adding water to the radiator. I was referred to this shop and had no choice but to consider this place because it was close to work. I did not want to risk causing further damage to the engine by driving to my mechanic close to home. Let's just simply say that I felt robbed as a single woman in need of service. The cost of the parts was bearable but the cost of labor was unreasonable. I truly feel that I was charged double the amount for labor due to the time it should have taken to fix the problem. In addition, there was no explanation of what was done to justify the inflated labor charge. I was not given a call to inform me the car was ready for pick up. Did not get a follow up call to let me know about a seond issue I brought up (wanted my brakes checked). When I asked about the brakes when picking up the car, I was told that they are ok even though I hear squeaking. I will never have service done there again nor recommend this shop no matter what!! They have repaired A/C, brakes, rotors, and fuel pump for me, always fast service, usually same day or next day service if they're busy. Been to other mechanics and dealerships in this area, with truly awful results, but all the work Greg and Leo have done has been solid so far. As others said, they will explain in detail to you what the cost breakdown is and what parts they are going to use. They charge a fee for diagnosing a problem ($70-80?) but will apply that to the cost of your repair. They have also been willing to use parts I brought. They also don't mind showing you on the car what the problem is if you ask. They are great about keeping the prices low for you, if you want higher quality parts I would make sure to request that specially, and of course, expect a higher estimate. :) My recommendation for mechanics is ideally to come prepared: know what is wrong with your car so you don't pay the diagnostic fee, and use rockauto.com to get an estimate of what the parts should cost so you know the ballpark. Pricing here is fair compared to my home mechanic in NJ. read more
