After bringing my Toro snow blower to my regular service company (sorry, I don't feel comfortable naming), I was told that I had damaged the scrapper bar and it was too bad to fix. I took a chance and stopped in to Greg's for a second opinion. He shook my hand and said he'd have a look. He did look and said yep .. damaged the scrapper bar and the paddles but he could fix it. One day later his staff person calls to say it is done and they delivered to my home. Just in time for the next snow. Run's like new now. stay away $500 thrown away 3 months after my stuff was picked up and after I needed it last season. i put it in the shed and tried to use them this spring. they broke my tiller - took my chainsaw after saying it couldn't be fixed - then sold me a used one that was worse and overheats after 5 minutes. the tune up on my snow thrower is a maybe. it did work, it it worked before too. do not trust them with a manual screw driver. read more

Beware. DO NOT USE THIS BUSINESS!! I only gave it one star because you can't give zero. No communication. Kept two of our machines (zero turn mower and 25hp tractor) for 7 months. My husband had to go there in person to get any kind of answer because no one would answer the phone or return calls. We asked for the machines back on multiple occasions, got the mower dropped off without warning, but it wouldn't run and we still had to repair it. We finally had to arrange pick up ourselves to get the tractor back before they finally dropped it off. They claimed it took them 5 hours to load the machine (seriously?! Put a winch on it and drag it! Takes 10 minutes tops) and charged us by the hour. Get the machines home and NONE of the repairs they were supposed to do were done. NEITHER MACHINE RAN AT ALL! The tractor had NO FLUID in it and the mower was clearly not serviced as they claimed. They charged us over $800 but refused to produce an invoice listing what they allegedly did, both of our machines needed to be serviced still, and the repairs that we sent them in for still had to be done too. This place is great for service and small engines. Very friendly people. I brought in my new Craftsman leaf blower, (as it broke down after 3 uses, that's another issue) for warranty repair. Greg, the owner of the shop said he would repair it while I waited, as I was coming from the City, he even sent me to a great restaurant down the street (Rita's). My lawnmower wasn't doing so well, and so I asked Greg's to pick it up and fix it. The guy who picked it up said that it would be about $70 to fix it, and upon returning it he handed me a bill for $170. They said they normally call you after they take a look at it to give you what the actual price is and to see if you are ok with it, but that certainly did not happen with me. To top it all off, my lawnmower wasn't even working properly after they fixed it! It sounded like a broken down motorcycle when I mowed the lawn. They had to take it back and fix it again. I was crystal clear with Greg to let me know if there were going to be any costs other than the service charge for the lawn mower to PLEASE let me know before making repairs. I even called to follow up next day and he confirmed all should be good and he'll let me know if there will be additional costs. Fast forward 4 days and the lawn mower is back at my house with a final bill for $400 in repairs on a $250 lawn mower. Man!!!! I should have read the reviews for this place before I brought my snow blower. I can only say 3 words for their customer service: SUCKS, RUDE, AVOID. I took my snow blower on a Sunday afternoon for a belt replacement (warranty) and Greg told me should be ready the next day. I called him late the next day and he told me that he don't know if it's done and that he will get to it when he can get to it and hung-up the phone. I waited until Thursday and called again to ask. he told me the same thing and hung-up the phone again so today, Friday I went and pick-up my snow blower (not repaired) and I couldn't believe when he told me it needs a belt, I just left. They picked up a 2 stage snowblower for a simple tune up and replace a worn belt. Called when it was ready to be dropped off and told me the bill was 400.00. When I asked for what, he named off a bunch of parts he felt needed to be replaced. We bought a brand new Toro Lawn mower from Home Depot--had to return it and the second one had problems also. We decided to get it fixed and let the Toro warranty cover it. We took it to Greg's,---he said it would take about 15 minutes to fix---I asked him if he wanted the warranty information. He said that it was a quick fix and it wasn't even worth filing the claim. I was already late for work so didn't want to wait and would come by later to pickup. He very graciously said that they could just drop it at our house. Have had two poor experiences with Greg's, one years ago and another just recently that prompted me to write this review. Because he grew up in the area there are lots of locals with that refer friends to him on the local lake bluff and lake forest referral Facebook group. My first experience was with a routine tune-up for an expensive Toro track-driven snowblower. When he picked it up I told them the protective rain cover on the vertical exhaust pipe was damaged and the unit could not be left outside in the rain. He called a month later and said the engine was blown and wanted several hundred for his "analysis". The machine I gave him was running well and I am certain he left out in the rain and water got in the engine. He then held my $2200 machine ransom for a $200 charge which I never was informed about. I sent a friend to pick it up for me that was going to scrap it and Greg refused to release it. I was SOO angry I just left him with the machine. Fast forward to now. My boyfriend dropped off his $400 Honda lawnmower at Greg's and said to call him with an estimate for repairs because it does not make sense to put more than $100 in it. Without any communication at all the machine appeared on the driveway a few days later with a bill for well over $200. Not only that it was repaired with a used part. Greg did not have any explanation for this poor communication and said he would pick up the machine and take out the part. I think this is just his way of doing business. Beware! read more

They picked it up Saturday morning, replaced the belt, and had it back to me on Tuesday after noon (before it started snowing again on Thursday!) Was looking to either trade in my current snow blower or have it repaired with this business. They came and picked it up, their best feature, in late October ... then nothing. No calls for three weeks. When I finally got thru, after 10 or so messages they tell me mine was rusted out and would cost too much to fix. Fine .. sell me a decent used one and I am happy. We agree on a price. Three weeks and several calls later and snow coming they finally return my call. 3times they said they would deliver and three times it doesn't show up!!!Then finally, they leave a very old snowblower on my driveway with a bill. No calls ...nothing. The amount is higher than we discussed and the thing is really hard to start. Don't use these guys they have no clue on customer service. Go elsewhere. read more

I would love to give it even more than five stars. My lawn mower was leaking oil. I dropped it off on Thursday morning and it was returned on Friday morning at no extra charge. A oil ring was replaced $4.95. I could have been told that it needed a new oil tank or new oil pump but I wasn't. That is called being SUPER HONEST. I just want to give a heads up, I usually never say anything bad about a company. I had Greg's Lawnmower/Snow blower Service from Lake Bluff pick up our snow blower for service. We asked for an estimate before servicing. We just wanted to make sure it was worth fixing. It was picked up on Monday, February 1st. By Wednesday of that week we didn't hear anything so my husband called. Greg said he had not had a chance to look at it yet. By Friday my husband called again. Greg said he was very busy and couldn't talk. Wednesday, Feb. 10th he called in the morning and told me the few things that were wrong and it would be about $200 to fix. I said I would have my husband call him back when he got home. My husband called and left a message to go ahead and fix it. By yesterday morning, we still didn't hear back, so I called to find out what was going on. Greg said he will make it a priority to fix it immediately and since he didn't have a driver he would bring it to us by yesterday evening. By today we still didn't hear from him. So I called and when he picked up the phone I started to say who I was and he rudely said HOLD ON. Left me hanging for about 5-7 minutes got back on and I asked him when we can get the snow blower back since he has had for over 2 weeks. He said it wasn't worth fixing and he was very busy and hung up on me. I have never come across anyone so rude from a company like this man. All he had too do was tell us from the very beginning that it wasn't worth fixing and we would've purchased a refurbished once from him, which is what I had originally asked him. This company is not worth working with to have an owner be so rude to a customer. If I could give a negative star review of this company, I would do it. I received an advertisement in the mail of Greg's Repair business. The free pickup and drop off of the snowblower is what helped me decide to use them. It was a huge mistake from the start. I had called the company asking if they could pick up my snowblower in December to fix the unit since it didn't start well and it acted liked it wanted to die each and every use. I asked the company to call me with a quote before starting any work. The company picked up my unit. Then weeks go by, and the unit was delivered back to me with an invoice. The company had done the work without notifying me of the cost of the repair, and I did NOT authorize work to be done. It gets much worse. The next big snow did not happen until January. So after the snow arrived, I tried to use the snowblower, and it was NOT fixed at all. It actually ran worse, didn't start, and kept killing when trying to use it. Needless to say I wasn't happy paying a huge repair bill and being charged for work that wasn't done. Plus on top of everything, I had to shovel out from the snowstorm. I DO NOT recommend this company. Please stay far away. I wish I had read the reviews out here before having them pick up my snowblower. I ended up having a different company fix my unit, and now it runs better than ever. The other company mentioned that a tune-up was NOT done by Greg's Repair, it was very low on oil, and it needed a major tune-up to run properly. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! read more

The negative reviews appear accurate. Poor customer service and poor communication. When a business has a full voicemail inbox unable to receive new messages, that seems less than optimal. They were the only show in town for pick up/drop off service for my riding mower, so I had to use them. ****Disclaimer......The work actually looks good and fair priced, but being kept in the loop about your repairs may not happen.**** Multiple times they would tell me they were picking up or dropping off my mower and when it would not happen, I had to call them to find out what changed, which was frustrating. If they could improve this easily fixable (but very important) aspect of their company I believe everyone would benefit, especially because their work appears quality and well priced. read more

The riding mower runs well now, and it is well balanced and cuts cleanly. However, the price for a tuneup was exorbitant (almost $300) and no estimate was provided before the work was done. I have been going to Greg's for years and have always been given great advice and service on repairs for all of my power equipment. I've taken advantage of a few of the sales that he's had as an authorized Echo dealer as well and was able to get 20% off last year on a chainsaw that I wanted. He has a lot of parts that others do not and his team can get just about anything back to working. I've had them pick up and drop off, although I prefer to just bring it in myself because it I usually wait until my equipment is broken and I need it, so I'd rather save the time by getting to them and back ASAP. Greg is a hard working small business owner and I personally would rather be able to go to a shop like his locally than to deal with a big box store where there is constant turnover and a new face every time I come in. read more

If I could give it a negative review I would We called to get an estimate in our Lawn mower not knowing why it wasn't working, we were told they would pick it up and call and give us an estimate. WRONG the very next day after picking up the lawn mower it was dropped off in my driveway with a bill for $383 attached to the steering wheel . No call with an estimate and work we would never have approved that had been done. $383.00 worth of work that was never approved. We would never told them to fix it for that price, rather just buy a new mower. So I had my snowblower serviced by Greg's last year & it had an electric start. So one would think when repairing the engine, the electric start would be tested & also repaired if not working properly. One would be wrong. They fixed engine & sent it back w/o fixing electric start! And their reasoning was that we didn't specifically ask them to fix that! And now they were too busy to work on it again so to call them in the off season. I wasn't happy at all but gave them a call anyway this summer & and they said they'd look for the part. Weeks would go by & no one would return my call. So I called again & again & every time it was the same story - they couldn't find the part. Turns out they were looking for a used part to save $ but never told me! You'd think they'd give u a choice & search accordingly but no they just wasted months searching for a used part when I was willing to pay for a new one! Then I finally give the green light to put new part, but unfortunately the receptionist (Kathy) who knew my case wasn't there so the guy said he'd hv her call when she got in. She never called so I called her & when talking to her abt when they could pick it up, she were very rude & said "well, pick a day...u need to pick a specific day" so I said today or tmrw. She says "ok Greg will call u before coming" (cuz I wanted an estimate of cost before they started work). I waited& waited but no call so ard 5 I called them to see what was up cuz there was no way they were coming tday at this rate. Turns out the shop closed at noon so they totally gv me wrong info & a total run around!! So I gave them a piece of my mind on the msg I left & here's the icing on the cake....she calls me next day & yells at me abt calling her dumb & not knowing her etc etc! I shdve hung up on her but I took the time to tell her I never called her dumb...I said it was dumb to tell me they'd call me &/or pick up my machine when the store wasn't even open! But the crazy lady kept yelling & said they may not even take my business was now...as if they're the only shop in town! Greg's is a low-key kind of company that just gets things done...no hassels, no mistakes and at a fair price. And they won't sell you something you don't need. Asked for an estimate before repair on two mowers. As I had two I did not need to have both repaired. Greg returned one and left it in the pouring rain with a bill. A bill for more than I paid for the mower. I called and told him not to repair the other mower without calling me with an estimate first. He returned the second mower with another bill and no call. I called. Got no apology. He acknowledged that I wanted an estimate and said "they were worth repairing". Well Greg. That wasn't $500 you get to decided to spend. read more

I wish I had read the reviews before blindly calling Greg's Lawn Mower repair when I saw their ad in the Green Oaks newsletter. Same disappointing experience described by other Yelpes. No business deservers the customer's money with this level of customer service. I can't question their repair services because I was not going to take an offer to repair a product that is as expensive or more than the product. Here's how my experience went: Day 1 - Me: Hi, I live in the area and saw you ad. I need a small tractor repaired and serviced. Do you also repair snow blowers? - Grumpy woman: Yes, what do you need? - Me: Can you also pick them up? - Grumpy woman: Yes - When can you pick them up so I get an estimate? - Grumpy woman: Tomorrow - Me: Do you need my address? - Grumpy woman: What is it? - Me: It is.... - Grumpy woman: OK, we'll pick them tomorrow, just leave them outside Day 2 - My equipment outside under the rain all day, nobody shows up Day 3 - Me: You said you would pick up my equipment, when will you? - Grumpy woman: Tomorrow, sorry, our guy was sick Day 4 - My equipment outside under the rain all day, nobody shows up. - Me: (thinking) Forget it Day 5 - I get a call at 8:00 - - Greg: I am here to pick you equipment - Me: I've been waiting and decided not to leave it outside again, it's been under the rain for two days - Greg: I will be here at 7:00 AM tomorrow - Me: (thinking) Maybe they're ok The rest is too long to write but long story short, they want to charge the same or more of the cost of theequipment to repair it and then they try to force me to junk it so they can sell it. My only choice was to pay to pay $80 per equipment for the "quote", otherwise I would have spent close to $1,000 for equipment that new is $1,500. After that I had a couple of quotes that were less than half for both the mower and blower with a person that actually helps with a smile. read more

Took my kids go cart there in the beginning of the summer. They said they could fix it. 2 months later it was not fixed and zero communication about it. Each time I called for an update they said they were looking for parts. I actually had to give them the website for parts and they still never fixed it. I finally gave up. Greg's has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember. I've always had a great experience dealing with Greg and his employees. 2 years ago, I had a temporary touch of insanity and purchased a snowblower from one of Greg's competitors because I received a gift card for said competitor from a friend. This past fall I received an advertisement from that competitor for a tune up. Who better to take it to than the place I bought it from right? Plus, I was embarrassed to take it to Greg because he surely would've seen their sticker on it. I got the snowblower back and it ran mediocre. This year has been pretty crazy with snow and it seemed the more I used it, the worse it ran. This past weekend, I took the snowblower to my dad's house in northern Wisconsin where they're having a record year for snowfall! When I tried to use the snowblower, it wouldn't do anything but die when I tried moving some snow. I brought the snowblower home last night. This morning, I prepared for the walk of shame into Greg's to explain what was going on, where I bought the snowblower from, and how they charged for me for a tune up that didn't do anything. Greg was great! He wouldn't comment on the competitor because he said "its not nice". I think it speaks to Greg's character because I opened the door for him to rip on me and the competitor and he chose not to. He simply told me what he thought the problem might be and that he would have my snowblower running good. He also said he would drop it off to me later this afternoon. I was surprised when he said that and figured due to my straying from his shop, I wouldn't hold him to it. I was working from home when I heard something in the driveway later in the afternoon. I was shocked when I saw Greg, himself, unloading my snowblower! He explained what they found without throwing his competitor under the bus and handed me my invoice. The price was awesome for the work they had completed and they even cleaned my snowblower - made it look brand new!! I certainly learned my lesson! Thanks Greg.....see you this summer! read more
