Took my kids go cart there in the beginning of the summer. They said they could fix it. 2 months later it was not fixed and zero communication about it. Each time I called for an update they said they were looking for parts. I actually had to give them the website for parts and they still never fixed it. I finally gave up. A first time user. With free pick up and delivery and only a small estimate charge if I didn't have any service on my lawn mower I decided to give Greg's a chance. From the first phone call to the return of the mower everything was great. They called with a very reasonable estimate and didn't charge me for any extras that I didn't need. They were fast, efficient and fairly priced. The lawn mower works better now than when it was new. To show you how honest they are they delivered the lawn mower without my paying for it. Worst, most dishonest business I have ever used. In February of 2010, Greg came to the house, looked at the snowblower, said he could fix it (tighten the belts, etc.). After many phone calls (every month) and promises to repair, it is now December, 2010 and in my conversation today, Greg told me: "we lost the snow blower, " and "the snow blower is not worth fixing." and "I'll bring the snow blower to your house." Do not send your equiptment to them! They picked up my blower for repair in the summer because I wanted to get a head start and beat the rush. It is now dec and they still haven't started fixing my blower. I called them many times to ask about a quote and never received one. They kept referring to my blower as the Chinese brand instead of it being marked with my name and number on it. So every time I called I had to refer to my blower as the Chinese one or else they couldn't locate it. So when speaking with Kathy ( who doesn't work there she just answers the phones? ) I asked her if I could speak with Greg and he was busy sharpening blades and that he would contact me. I asked her if that would be today because I was still waiting for a call back from last weeks inquiry. She goes on to say that she was not him and that he does what he wants. So I told her that she was rude and that I do not wish for them to fix my blower anymore. She then hung up on me. So after 7 times of calling back and being hung up on I had to get the police involved. Very unprofessional I honestly do not think that anyone who bought there blowers from menards or Home Depot will have any luck here. Greg is old school guy.Man of his words.He can fix Any brand lawn mover.I read all this negative review and thought if they are true then why he is in business for 40 years.If u go to Home Depot,Lowe's or menards they will not even fix the lawn mover.They will ask u to buy new one compare to that this place has service of pick up and drop off.Nothing is free in today's world so I m fine with the charge of tune up,pick up and delivered all in $80.For some people it might not work because they want see what's wrong and why it's not fixable.They they should do it them self but I will give this place AAA for experience I had.thanks Greg. read more

I've used Greg's a couple of times to fix and/or tune up my snowblower and have had good results. I dropped off my push mower recently and had an entirely different experience. My mower was running fine last fall but I wanted to get a tune up before mowing this season. They called and said I had a bent crankshaft and should just junk the mower. They also charged me $24 for not doing any work, though I can see charging a little for your time. I was skeptical because my mower was working just fine the last time I used it. They couldn't believe I actually wanted my mower back...are they trying to get people to buy THEIR new/used mowers??? I get my mower home and discover that my spark plug is missing - I can't even try out the mower to see if my mower's ok or if it was tampered with to make it unusable. Terrible!!! I'll be taking my business elsewhere. Also, the lady at the front desk (same lady who answers the phone), was very rude...both in person and on the phone. She was fine today, but the last two interactions have made me not want to deal with Greg's again. I agree with Matt B.'s comments that this person needs to learn some customer service skills if she's the one dealing with customers. read more

I am adding an additional review because the bad reviews in this site do not represent the quality and service that Greg's lawnmower repair offers. I have recently spent quite a bit of time at this shop and am amazed at the service they give to their clients. Free pickup and delivery of your equipment, master technicians repairing your equipment and they are always pleasant. There was a big snowstorm recently and the staff/mechanics worked overtime to be sure every person received their equipment returned to them within a couple of days. They went over and above for their customers. Kudos to Greg and his staff. They are amazing. read more

We called Greg to fix a really old lawn mower. He was completely honest with us that it would cost more to repair and he could not guarantee that it would last. He did not charge us for the work done and we were able to buy/trade in the old lawn mower for a newer rebuilt model. The new one works great and we will definitely be using them again! It's refreshing to have a business be honest instead of just trying to get our money. I had read some of the other reviews, I personally had great customer service and Greg was very quick to call back so it looks like they have been working hard on fixing some of the issues they had in the past. Three days later I called again...he clearly had no idea who I was and asked "riding or push?" He then informed me he would have it to me the next day. Great....that would be Friday and ready for weekend. No mower Friday when I get home...left 6 messages Saturday...no return call. Monday was holiday, Tuesday we call and are told our mower "is a piece of junk and needs a drive shaft". My husband asks him to return the mower...get it next day, minus the spark plug!!!! I used them for years, but things have changed. On 3/1/15 I had them pickup my rider for normal spring tune-up, they said they needed 1 1/2 weeks. two weeks later I called, they didn't look at it yet. Three weeks later, they still have not looked at it. Four weeks later, still have not looked at it. Five weeks later they checked it out, called with an estimate for $990.00, I asked to speak to Greg, they said he would call. Greg called 3 days later. We went over the estimate and $500.00 of work was not necessary. Told him ok to do the other work. He said it would take a week. Called a week later, they said they had to order parts. Had my snowed picked up for a no start I live in Gurnee. Quoted 20 each way for pick and drop. Dropped off the next day with a 354.00 bill. I went to start it no start I called back said they would come pick it back up. The owner showed started it and left. Now my auto drive won't work the machine is 1 year old. This company has the worst customer service and their prices are way to high. I recommend NOT USING THIS COMPANY plus I pretty sure the broke other stuff on my blower to get repeat business or the mechanic just sucks!! read more

I was called by my neighbor while out of town, telling me my mower was on my driveway. Greg just dumped it off after telling me he would call me with an estimate. I asked my neighbor to move it, and he reported that it had an invoice on it for all kinds of work, none of which was authorized. I am out of town for 10 more days. What the hell were they thinking? I wish I had read reviews about this place before having them to tune up my snow blower. They did work with out calling to give estimate and get authorization to do the work. In my recollection this has been the worst winter. Below zero temperature and snowing every other week, as such I put my hand dandy ever present Troy-bilt snow blower to good use. The problem was that snow in cold eventually freezes and locks the gears while wearing the belt out. It was a Saturday and I wanted my snow blower repaired as soon as possible, so I try to look for a service center. Lowe's service pickup and turn around is only on Friday and they take it away to repair meaning that not only would I wait 7 days to drop it off, but I would have to wait another 7 to pick it up. It would be the end of February and hopefully I wouldn't need it by then. Every other service center was either closed for the weekend or they asked well over $200. Greg's was not only open (a big plus) but we dropped it off at 3 P.M. on Saturday and got it back less than 24 hours later. I should point out Greg's is closed on Sundays, but he still came to drop it off and had a bunch of other snow blowers he had to drop off, so that just goes to show that the guy literally is a Mr. no day's off kind of guy, and I can respect that. The full cost was $175 and he even mentioned that he would have picked it up and dropped it off as part of the service meaning that we didn't have to drop it at his shop to begin with. Would have been nice to know at the time but I am not complaining about it as it is minor and something I didn't expect. Once he dropped it off, he even turned on the machine and started blowing some snow to show it is back to good condition. Long story short Greg's is great and I will go to him if I have future problems, and if I had a lawn mower I would most likely go to him as well. read more

This was my first time using Greg's. My snowblower stopped blowing a week ago, and I've been out of town since then. Forecast says up to 6" of snow tonight, so I was hoping against hope to get it repaired today. First place I called wouldn't repair my make of blower. I found Greg's on-line, called, and the pleasant woman on the phone explained the mechanics left at 12 noon, but if I got it there quickly they'd see if they could repair it sameday. I arrived at 11:05 am, they took it in immediately, abd within 10 minutes found worn belts. After paying for repair, Greg was going to help me load it in my van. He pushed it a few feet, stopped and said he didn't like the noise the transmission was making - no charge to grease it up. The mechanic came back over, opened up the bottom and began greasing it while telling Greg the bushings were bad, too. I wanted the blower to be fully repaired, and agreed to the additional repairs. I GREATLY appreciated that Greg made me aware of the additional repairs needed, if for no other reason than it was a pain in the neck to get it into my van and doing all the repairs at once saved me from doing that again. I don't understand the previous review claiming the rates are crazy high. The labor rate was very reasonable (less than $60/hour). If I need other lawn/garden equipment repairs, I'll be sure to return to Greg's! read more

This guy is a ripoff. I called him because i had a free pickup & drop off service coupon. He said thats only for tuneup work. I told him that his coupon didn't specify that. I gave him my name and address and told him what when he'd be by about 10 am. Half an hour later he called back asking for my address again and what i needed done. I repeated both, change the blades to the mulching blades and sharpen the old ones. I specified that was ALL I wanted no oil change, nothing extra. When it was returned i was given a bill that indicated that he gave the lawn mower an oil change, even though i specifically told i dudnt want it. He charged 2 hours to change the blades, and he dud not sharpen the old blades. It is my belief that changung the blades should not have taken 2 hours. Some one who knows what to do should take less than 1 hour to do the work. My opinion us that the guy is a raging alcoholic or drug abuser based upon the additional phone call and his inability to follow instructions. I will NEVER use this company EVER again. read more

My roommate, who can fix anything, spent three hours trying to fix our snowblower; I finally told him to take it in somewhere. So he pulls this clown's info from the Yellow Pages and takes it to him. Greg tells him he'll call with an estimate; never called, just went ahead and repaired it and then charged us over $500! We could have bought a NEW one for that kind of money! The jerk wanted his credit card number over the phone for payment, fool roommate gave it to him with the promise that Greg will drop the snowblower off on his way home from work and NEVER SHOWED! It's now 9:27pm and not even a phone call. I have asked said roommate to call the credit card company and have a chargeback issued for the entire amount. I'm quite sure he's padded his labor time handsomely and ripped us off royally. I am going to follow this up by contacting the BBB as well as the Illinois Attorney General's Office. What a lousy excuse he is for a small businessman. Update: Greg apparently was dumping the snowblower off on our driveway just like he did with Poster Armen T at 7am this morning when roommate heard him and went out there. He told him that he had family problems and that's why he didn't drop it off last night as he was supposed to; no cell? No family phone? When told the additional work this clown did was NOT authorized, Greg responded that belts were worn and other parts needed replacement and it wouldn't have worked without his having done the additional work; blatant lie, and roommate told him he could have done that work himself and, again, he did not have authorization to do this additional work and charge us for the parts and labor. Roommate told him that he'll give him half of what he'd charged and the offer was refused; Clown then told that the cc co has been contacted and the amount and service disputed, he says then it's now between Clown and the cc co and he left. What a POS!! PS - BBB rating = D! Apparently they've had several complaints about this business already!! read more

Does not know how to trouble shoot, replaces parts that you have already replaced and told him not too, does not provide estimate but provides the worst service I have ever had from any place! Dropped off lawn tractor to tune of $550 worth of useless poorly done repairs. Had to have him come back out while I was at work because the fuel filter clamp leaked and left a puddle of gas on my driveway. Everyone.I am a small business owner and I make it a point to support small business. I like no name coffee shops and places who put there name in the title. I was a newcomer to Greg's repair from a flyer in the Mail. PLEASE NOTE; It does not say the WORD "SERVICE" in its Title of their shop. I whole experience was a Nightmare. Bad Communication from the Start but they had picked up my professional 3-blade mower almost immediately after I called. Get a WRITTEN Quote and Do not get sucked in like I did with the Advertised FREE Pick up and Delivery. Labor fee was not reasonable but I was in no position to barter - they quickly picked up my mower. I think if you are a past customer you are going to get good service and probably be ASK to write a review to offset and confuse the inquiry of a potential Newcomer, if you are a new customer and don't have any ties to this group - then Consumer Beware. ASK over the phone BEFORE they pick up your mower - What do they CHARGE for THIS service and what do you charge for THAT service. THEN the BIG Question - How long will it TAKE ? They add another week. Get your neighborhood sophmore lawn mowing student on board to cut your lawn for a month like I did. Mower is home and it does work. Final Invoice was way too high. I've lived in the area since 1985. I've always used Greg's for lawnmower and snow-thrower maintenance and repair. For all those years, they pick up and drop off on time, as promised, with the machine ready to go. I don't know how they do it, but when it's "in-season" and there's a breakdown, they make time to pick it up, get it repaired pronto, and drop it off right away so you're not waiting for a mower or breaking your back shoveling. read more

Based on my experience with Greg's Lawnmower, the low reviews on Yelp are very misleading. My experience with this company, and Greg the owner, has been a breath of fresh air. Let me explain. On Friday before Memorial Day at 4pm, I ran over a piece of metal with my Honda Lawnmower. Extreme vibration...Bent the crankshaft. Called a local Honda dealer. They said it was toast, they couldn't fix it, and I would have to buy a new one (over $600). So I called Greg's. He answered and said he thought they could fix it, and he would also wait till I could bring it in, even if after closing at 5:30. I said I didn't want them to wait for me given the Holiday, and Greg said he would be there at 6am if I wanted to bring it in, in the morning. I did get there about 8:30. His service guys said it wasn't fixable on their crankshaft machine (Toro based). Greg said he could machine the part with his extensive shop (it is impressive). 2 hours later I picked up a perfectly running Honda mower, blades sharpened, even washed. Greg called me 3 times to give me updates during that wait time. Service was excellent, price was very reasonable. He essentially fixed something that nobody else could, and did it with a smile. He even gave me tips on my snowblower maintenance when I was in the shop. I am so happy a place like this is in the area, to take care of all my motor tools. read more

My family has been using Greg for lawnmower and lawn care equipment maintenance and service since I was a kid (late-80's I'd guess). Now that I have my own house and yard, I too use Greg for my needs. Greg is an honest and local small-business owner who likes the business he is in. He provides dependable services and has always returned our equipment in tip top shape. He even gave us a loaner when he knew the necessary repairs would take time to bring parts in and have them installed. He will pick up riding mowers and return them to make the whole process a no-hassle experience. I had recently dropped off a push mower for some service work and he delivered it back to me later that afternoon. I realize this isn't the height of his season so that was possible but it is that touch that has made Greg's Lawnmower a long standing name in the North Shore area.
