I did not buy anything nor get anything serviced by J & M. Instead I made a call to get information. Instead of trying to get a sale (or in this case service) that would cost me about $150, the person on the phone gave me options on getting my chainsaw running again. Not only options, but he took the time to give suggestions, advice and even a referral to another store to buy a new chain. Even though J & M realized that they would not make any money off of me, they took the time to explain options to me to assist me with my problem. If this is how well they treat a non paying customer - I can only imagine how great they are with paying customers. Thank you J & M for your assistance and great service. I went to J & M to drop off my Honda Lawn Mower for repairs. The Self Propelling system stopped working. Josh was working on a repair for another customer and told me he would be with me in a few minutes. Josh then helped me unload the mover and repaired the mower on the spot. The charge - NO CHARGE. I brought my toro snowblower in to be fixed, they got it running and then I picked it up about 5 days later, I brought it home and didn't need it right away, and a couple weeks later when I went to use it, I started it up and ran for about 2 minutes and then it shut off On me. I called them back about it, and Josh said to bring it back and he will go through it again, totally backing up his work, he also keep me up to date with his progress on it and then within a day or so, he called and said it was ready to go and when I got there, he fired it up on the first pull and he told me it was no charge, telling me that he stands behind his work and it was all good now. Josh's name was given to us by another shop that was too busy to look at our lawn mower. I called Josh from the other shop and he told us to come right over - his place is on the NE side of Crystal Lake. We explained to Josh the problem we were having and Josh was very knowledgeable. He explained that it was $50 to look at it & if it is a new belt then it would be less than $100. He said he would call us before doing any work if it was going to be more than $100. He also told us he would have it done in a week. We asked him if he could also sharpen the blades (we usually do that every spring) - no problem! Three days later Josh called and had our lawn mower fixed with sharp blades! Josh was great! He did a great job of communicating upfront and completed the job! Yelp has its system fixed so that you can't EVEN ANSWER the business' reply you complained about. So, you have to write another review. So, here is my answer to J&M. "Josh's J&M small engine repair's response is full of LIES. He states that "When you needed an oil filter and I did not have one in stock I went to Home Depot on a Sunday and purchase the filter out of my pocket as you were concerned about going to a a third store that day." First off, I spoke to the Manager of that Home Depot, & he located the filter, and the filter is in a plastic enclosed packaging, showing the filter through the plastic with NO BOX. The filter that Josh handed me was in what looked like a man-handled, old box. LIE #1 !! Then he states complete falsehood, stating: "When you needed an oil filter and I did not have one in stock I went to Home Depot on a Sunday and saying "purchase the filter out of my pocket as you were concerned about going to a a third store that day." He never left his house as he has a bunch of these filters he paid $8.00 for. When he states, "We did help with as much as we could without payment", he is referring to the 3 minute job of changing my dull & nicked blades, though I had to practically beg him to do so. Why did he take 3 minutes of his time to do so? Because he wanted to entice me to have him come to my house, pick up my tractor for some $100 or $150, & I would have no idea if he ripped me off, telling me parts were bad that were not. When I ended up calling his "business partner" shady friend who they both swapped out jobs with when they were to busy. Then this "partner" started to state lies about me when he NEVER MET ME. Fast, responsive, knowledgeable and reasonable. Like others I was referred to Josh by another shop in the area that doesn't work on my specific type of riding mower. Josh got back to me right away, came out shortly thereafter & showed/told me exactly what needed to be done (and why the damage happened, so I could avoid doing it again). The work was done faster than he initially estimated, and the total was a bit LESS than his initial estimate that I'd agreed to. The world needs more honest businesspeople like that! One last note: Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I would advise you to ignore the grumpy old man with the nasty review, who appears to be on Yelp just to leave one-star reviews of people who refuse to kiss his butt. My lawn mower started spewing white smoke. I called and Josh told me I could bring it right over. I feared an oil leak and in my head I was balancing the likely cost of repair versus buying a new mower. Fifteen minutes later I was at J&M. Josh checked for gas getting into the oil, but determined that my air filter had gotten clogged with my neighbor's cottonwood seeds. He offered to sell me a filter he had in stock ($10) and I was on my way. That could easily have been a "leave it and I'll take a look in a day or two" situation at some shops. Josh was pleasant, helpful and didn't overcharge me where others might. I recommend J&M and will use it again in the future. read more
