I purchased a new folding knife valued at over $200. The blade was a tad dull, and I wanted the bevel re-profiled. After reading the reviews, and seeing that Greg has been sharpening knives for decades, I thought he would be able to make the desired adjustments. I brought my knife in, described that I was looking for a 40 degree bevel, and he seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. Greg took the knife into his workshop and I heard the sounds of a bench grinder. I should have ran back and stopped him then. He spent just a few moments grinding away before he brought the knife back out. He demonstrated that it could cut paper, but upon closer inspection the blade was basically ruined. The tip was rounded off, and the bevel was uneven. Not to mention it looked like it was sharpened on a cinder block. I was in shock. I paid him ($3.50), and thought to myself that I could fix it at home with the sharpening stones that I have. At home, I examined the knife further and realized so much material had been removed that it was beyond repair. I drove back to Gregs to determine what recourse I had. I politely explained that I was not satisfied, and the knife had been ruined. He took the knife back into his shop for more grinding (even after I asked him not to). I guess he wanted to just totally finish it off for me. At this point, I wanted my knife replaced, and I asked if he had any insurance to cover such events. He became agitated, told me he wasn't going to give me $200, and he threw my $3.50 down on the counter as to wash his hands of me. And that was that. End of discussion. I'm sure Greg can take great care of your lawnmower blade or other hard use tools, but knives require a more meticulous technique than a bench grinder. If you value your knives, I suggest looking elsewhere for sharpening. read more

My chef knife which I use all day every day happened to chip a couple days ago. It went about 1/16 of an inch into the steel. I was worried about getting it fixed and was recommended to go here to get it worked on. When I got in he looked at it like it was no big deal told me he'd be done with it in 30 minutes. 30 minutes later new edge. New tip. Nice polish all for $3.50 and a tip. Came in to sharpen 4 of my pocket knives and a bayonet. My pocket knives were duller than a butter knife and my bayonet though sharp, needed some fine sharpening. Tested them out on some paper and cardboard today and was happy to say that it cut through it like butter! One of my pocket knives i tried to sharpen myself also (before i had greg sharpen it) had a nick on it and greg straightened and resharpened it to a fine point. This review was done 6 years ago on my wife's account... thought i would transfer it over here. Last Friday I had an important interview for a sushi chef position. i flew in the night before from sacramento and my knives were in pretty poor shape. The place i went to was closed on friday and thursday, something they didn't put on their website. it was 11 AM and my interview was at 4 PM. in desperation i went to Greg's Sharpening Service. My knives are my life, more so as a sushi chef then any other chef. i was extremely nervous about handling over my knives to a complete stranger. Greg assured me that he worked on sushi knives all the time. I showed him my 9 inch yanagiba that was bent from a mishap. Greg said he could make it true. I left him my knives and the trust of a sushi chef to a professional sharpener. i had scheduled another interview at 2 PM and my wife picked up the knives for me. Greg warned her to be careful since they were extremely sharp! once i had my knives back i inspected them closely. Greg did an amazing job. for 3.50 a knife plus polishing and no charge to correct the bend total came out to 21 bucks for all my knives. Money well spent for a bang up job. This is a small unassuming shop which might easily be mistaken for the bookstore next door. You have to look very carefully to enter the right door. Everything about this place is unassuming except the service which is spectacular! Knives are sharpened, artistically wrapped and return to you in almost no time at all or an incredibly reasonable price. The result is first-rate. Formerly, all my knives were sharpened in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood. So I was very leery about going to this shop which as I said is small and unassuming. This guy is great! He sharpened up my Ka-Bar in about 10 mins. He put an edge on it that can split hairs. He even sharpened the clip on the spine of the knife, which if you have ever tried to sharpen that part of a Ka-Bar with a regular whetstone you know it can be a real pain. I signed up just to say Greg is awesome. I dropped off 4 knives before work and didn't have a chance to pick them up until the following morning. All 4 knives were shaving sharp, even a thick boot knife with a 1.5" blade. He reprofiled the edge on my Emerson from the chisel grind to a sharper V and backed up the relief a tad bit for a shallower angle. To top things off, while dropping the knives off, the meter lady came in to warn us about expired meters (nice of her) and Greg gave me a quarter for parking without hesitation. After searching for a knife sharpening service a few months ago, I found Greg's place. It took me a month to finally get a Saturday off so I could go in. The reviews I saw last month were mostly favorable. When I checked this last Saturday, I saw the posting by Jared. I was somewhat concerned as I was planning to bring in several chef's knives and my trusty Kershaw pocket knife. So this last Saturday, my wife and I decided to go and see if we were comfortable leaving about $800.00 worth of knves to be sharpened. In addition to the Kershaw, I have 3 Shun knives, two with single bevels and a Hattori 8" chef's knife made from 63 layers of folded Damascus steel. One of my Henkel's,and my Ken Onion Shun, were beyond my ability to properly sharpen. I have been using my Chef's Choice 3 stage sharpener, but it has worn down the blade at the butt and no longer allows a proper rocking motion. I asked Greg about his experience with Jared, as I wanted to hear both sides. His explanation was, in my opinion, believable, so we decided to leave the knives and go on our way to do some shopping. The knives were done in about two hours. Greg explained to me that he had ground down the butt of the Henkel so that it could be used in a proper rocking motion. All of the knives are razor sharp. As anyone knows, a dull knife is far more dangerous than a properly sharpened one. What I took away from the experience is that Greg is a hard working person trying to make it in this economy. His prices are reasonable and his work is more than worth the cost of the sharpening. Now that a third of my knives are sharpened, I am looking forward to bringing the rest in. I truly recommend his place, the quality of his work, and the honesty I felt while there. read more

I'm a meat cutter and got some "hand me down" knifes. I looked up a sharpening place in San Diego and found Greg. A friend and I went to his shop and brought in 5 knifes and he only charged $3.50 for each! After grabbing a bite to eat he called and said they were ready to pick up already! He said they were so dull he even had to do some reshaping, with no extra costs. Also had a conversation about swords and weapons he has in his shop as well. 10/10 will definitely go back, its the perfect mom and pop shop everyone loves to see! read more
