I am a chef. As such, I have some pretty expensive Wusthof knives. To sharpen them I bought a Wusthof sharpener made specifically for my knives. For everything else that needs sharpening I go to Greg's. I've had him sharpen hedge shears, chain saws, and a number of drill bits that I totally wrecked doing a remodel at home and I considered trash but he managed to save them. The man knows just about every type of cutting instrument out there and his prices are super reasonable. Sometimes it takes a few extra days to get stuff back but you know the work will be done to a very high standard. I imagine if you are in a rush he'd get it done sooner for a bit extra which likely would not be a big deal since his prices, as I mentioned, are very reasonable. Great little shop, great customer service and excellent quality of work. He really took the time to explain things to me and everything turned out wonderfully. I took in a Chef Knife, 2 pockets knives and a set of pinking sheers. The bill was only $18. I purchased a set of rather expensive Cutco knives some years back. They worked well for a while but required sharpening roughly a year after the purchase. Cutco sent out a "rep" to sharpen them at my house for free. This service was hardly free. The whole time the Cutco rep was sharpening my knives, he tried over and over to sell me more Cutco products. After twenty minutes, I made it crystal clear that I was not interested in buying more Cutco products because I was not overly impressed with the ones previously purchased. Angered by this ridiculous sales pitch, I said to myself "forget the warranty, I will find a local merchant to work on my knives". Fast forward a few years later, I found Greg's Sharpening Service. When I took my Cutco set into Greg he said that if he performed the sharpening, it would void the Cutco warranty. I couldn't accept his terms fast enough. With a one-day turnaround, I was thoroughly pleased with his work. Not only were the knives razor sharp, he did a far better job than the Cutco rep! If you have a set of knives that can only be sharpened by the manufacturer and have had a similar experience, take my advice and go see Greg. I have since taken several pairs of scissors and other edged tools to Greg's Sharpening and do not intend on looking elsewhere for another sharpening service. Quick, inexpensive, expert sharpening. Brought my two good kitchen knives for sharpening. Can't beat it at $3.50 each, especially when the place in Grossmont Center wanted $40 to do one of them, because they said it was too worn. I found this place via Yelp! and saw all the reviews on here, So that was a good start. I took in a machete and an ax. I showed him the machete and said the only problem is this big nick that made the blade dull in this one spot from hitting a rock. To which he replied it wont even be there. Perfect, just what I was looking to hear. I was expected to have to come back another day. I was pleasantly surprised when I was told come back in 20 mins. Greg is so friendly and knowledgeable about cutlery. I had him sharpen 3 knives that were so dull and nicked, Greg took a look and asked if I was using them to cut lumber. LOL! He quoted me a price of about 4 dollars per blade. When I returned the blades had a great edge that withstood the paper test and all the nicks were gone and smoothed out so you wouldn't have known the were there in the first place. He is also great when you are looking to buy knives by brand. He showed me the correct way of steeling my blade to maintain its edge. His prices are so good I wonder how he stays in business. This is my first time going after hearing about it via the Nextdoor app. I needed a new key made ASAP and this is the place I chose. The people working there were very nice. I didn't realize the minimum amount for a purchase with a debit card, but they were very accomodating! I took my kitchen knives and a hatchet I use for firewood to Greg's, after my parents recommended them. Super friendly service, fast work, really good price, and a beautiful job on all of my stuff - the hatchet has seen a lot of campouts in various climates over the past few years, and not only did they put a shiny new edge on the blade, but cleaned up all the wear on it to make it look nice. Greg's deserves 100 stars out of 5! I took in a barely used Dewalt hedge trimmer that was barely working, and I would have thrown away if it wasn't for Greg's. I also brought along a kitchen knife that I had sharpened myself a few times using a highly recommended sharpening kit. I asked if it was even worth sharpening, because it wasn't super a very expensive knife. He asked if I used it, which I do. In less than a minute he had sharpened the knife 100 times better than when it was new. He demonstrated its sharpness by slicing through newspaper like it was butter. When I took it home I was able to cut things like I never had before. I'm hooked, and am going to take every thing I own that can be sharpened to Greg. Plus he was super friendly, and the bandaids he gave me was a hilarious touch. And it was extremely inexpensive to boot. read more

Great place brought in 5 knives of different sizes, and a pair of kitchen shears. Every one is now wicked sharp, and one of the smaller knives he put a new edge on (as requested) He could have gotten the blades back to us that afternoon if we had wanted.The blades all come nice wrapped so you can get them home with out cutting yourself. I thought the prices were crazy cheap. I will be bringing in my good fabric and pinking shears, and my husband has a few saw blades that need sharpening. He better not retire ;) read more

Very friendly and great customer service. Had a pair of meat cutting scissors he sharpened. I brought them back because a certain area wouldn't cut. He took a lot of time with me and the scissors and found out and showed me they were tweaked in the middle. They weren't really quality scissors. He had a pair of Buck Knife brand I bought and he deducted the cost of sharpening my pair. Also added my first sharpening would be free. He explained all the different things they could do, how to clean them, plus. These new ones are GREAT! I am taking all my knives and scissors to him soon and recommend him very highly. My wife got some hedge shears and a old steel cleaver at a yard sale for a few dollars. Neither of them could cut thru water they were so dull. After a trip to Greg's they are like new. And the $9.25 he charged to sharpen both was well worth it. New hedge shears cost $30.00 at home depot, take your old tools to Greg instead. read more

I took my dog grooming shears to Greg this morning, he had them ready for me in about 2 hours. When I went to pick them up, I also brought in my clipper blades to find out if he was able to sharpen them as well, he was. Last Friday I had an important interview for a sushi chef position. i flew in the night before from sacramento and my knives were in pretty poor shape. The place i went to was closed on friday and thursday, something they didn't put on their website. it was 11 AM and my interview was at 4 PM. in desperation i went to Greg's Sharpening Service. My knives are my life, more so as a sushi chef then any other chef. i was extremely nervous about handling over my knives to a complete stranger. Greg assured me that he worked on sushi knives all the time. I showed him my 9 inch yanagiba that was bent from a mishap. Greg said he could make it true. I left him my knives and the trust of a sushi chef to a professional sharpener. i had scheduled another interview at 2 PM and my wife picked up the knives for me. Greg warned her to be careful since they were extremely sharp! once i had my knives back i inspected them closely. Greg did an amazing job. for 3.50 a knife plus polishing and no charge to correct the bend total came out to 21 bucks for all my knives. Money well spent for a bang up job. While I was happy with the price and the sharpness, I am very disappointed with the fact that I didn't get back what I gave. I brought in a pair of beauty shears with spacers in the finger holes to be sharpened. I got the shears back minus a spacer. That alone upset me because no one sells the spacers anymore. I can't use my shears without them. I called and left a message only to never hear back...until I called 2 weeks later where he denied ever seeing them. Just weird that I go in with two and comeback with one. I guess it was a waste to have them sharpened when I can't even use them. Not Happy... won't be back. read more

Went into Greg's today and brought my Leatherman, a butcher knife, a carving knife and two boning knives. Greg was extremely nice and welcoming. I was expecting to leave my 5 knives and figured on a week for turnaround. Greg told me he would have them done within 30 minutes. I was stunned and skeptical... But he finished early and my knives are so dang sharp it is unbelievable. They sliced though paper like a hot knife through butter. I got home and I used my butcher knife on a London broil and it just parted the meat like Moses parting the Red Sea! I've never owned knives this sharp! My Leatherman is sharp enough that I could shave with it! Oh and the best part? $3,50 a knife... Less than $20 for all 5 knives. I'll be bringing more of my knives in for sharpening. Greg is incredible! And a truly nice gentleman! He even took the time to show me how to use my honing steel. I have found my sharpening service! Thank you Greg! Came in and sharpened four of my cutting knives for 3.50 each. Done in thirty minutes. Shop is located in the quaint area of La Mesa Village, so enough time to window shop and grab a yogurt. If my man was with me would have been enough time to do lunch. When I came in to pick them up he gave me a pack of Band-Aids and said that was just in case I cut myself because my knives were now deadly sharp. Then proceeded to slice the knife through a single piece of paper effortlessly. For certain will be taking my blades back here. read more

I purchased a new folding knife valued at over $200. The blade was a tad dull, and I wanted the bevel re-profiled. After reading the reviews, and seeing that Greg has been sharpening knives for decades, I thought he would be able to make the desired adjustments. I brought my knife in, described that I was looking for a 40 degree bevel, and he seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. Greg took the knife into his workshop and I heard the sounds of a bench grinder. I should have ran back and stopped him then. He spent just a few moments grinding away before he brought the knife back out. He demonstrated that it could cut paper, but upon closer inspection the blade was basically ruined. The tip was rounded off, and the bevel was uneven. Not to mention it looked like it was sharpened on a cinder block. I was in shock. I paid him ($3.50), and thought to myself that I could fix it at home with the sharpening stones that I have. At home, I examined the knife further and realized so much material had been removed that it was beyond repair. I drove back to Gregs to determine what recourse I had. I politely explained that I was not satisfied, and the knife had been ruined. He took the knife back into his shop for more grinding (even after I asked him not to). I guess he wanted to just totally finish it off for me. At this point, I wanted my knife replaced, and I asked if he had any insurance to cover such events. He became agitated, told me he wasn't going to give me $200, and he threw my $3.50 down on the counter as to wash his hands of me. And that was that. End of discussion. I'm sure Greg can take great care of your lawnmower blade or other hard use tools, but knives require a more meticulous technique than a bench grinder. If you value your knives, I suggest looking elsewhere for sharpening. read more
