I'm a meat cutter and got some "hand me down" knifes. I looked up a sharpening place in San Diego and found Greg. A friend and I went to his shop and brought in 5 knifes and he only charged $3.50 for each! After grabbing a bite to eat he called and said they were ready to pick up already! He said they were so dull he even had to do some reshaping, with no extra costs. Also had a conversation about swords and weapons he has in his shop as well. 10/10 will definitely go back, its the perfect mom and pop shop everyone loves to see! read more

Greg does a absolutely terrific job with my sharpening needs. Moreover, his prices are unbelievably low. He charged me $3.50 per blade. WOW!! I have Henckels top of the line chef knives. The first time I went in I asked what angle he sharpened them at. When he said about 15 degrees I knew I was in the right place. Not only did he make my knives scalpel sharp, he did it within the day. I have taken other items to Greg for sharpening and have been more than satisfied each and every time. I've been going to Greg's now for a couple of years. He's worked on some of my garden type tools and everything cuts like they were brand new. The main thing that I get sharpened is my chef's knife. I cut a lot of produce, which can be hard on the blade edge, so I go as a routine every couple of months. Greg has done a fantastic job every time. He even noted the tip was slightly bent, and was able to get it straitened out. The prices are great. I pay $3.50 a knife, (as of this writing) which is a bit lower than some other places I've seen, and they did not have the quality tools that Greg uses. As far as the edge after it's been sharpened- I usually forget that I had my knife sharpened by the next time I use it, and within the first 1-2 cuts, I immediately notice a big difference (which reminded me). So, I feel that it's very sharp. read more

I have been here twice to have my kitchen (professional quality) knives, a scissors and even my blender blade sharpened by Greg before. He does great work and was friendly except for the last time I went to pick up my stuff. As I was walking out and closing the door I distinctly heard him say "Now get the hell out." I was so shocked and running late that I did not want to deal with a confrontation but I will never be back. That was so rude and disrespectful. So glad I found Greg after searching for the best place to take my full set of Wuthof chef's knives, paring knives, carving knives, kitchen shears and 12 steak knives; 25 pieces in all. Having a couple thousand dollars invested in these knives--and using them every day--I wasn't going to trust them to just anyone. Greg did a fabulous job, was friendly and professional. Will definitely go back. Only one tiny suggestion. Greg, I think you need to send every customer home with a box of bandaids. Don't work with dull blades. Take your knives and garden tools into Greg's. He is a master at blade sharpening. I took several kitchen knives as well as some pocket knives to Greg's to have them sharpened. His prices are very reasonable and he does a great job. He is also a very nice man and provides great customer service. I am planing on taking our garden tools in next. Sharp blades are safer blades. I took my newly sharpened knives to a group cooking event at the Ronald Mc Donald House. Everyone wanted to use my knives because they were so much sharper and made the vegetable chopping quick and easy. read more

I took 5 blades for him to sharpen (2 serrated, 3 regular blades, some quite long)- for all of them it was only $20. He was very quick and prompt- even if you wait, it's a nice walk through the La Mesa Village with a coffee shop across the street. I had a bent tip on my chef's blade. It dropped on the floor and I wanted to cry. I took it and the rest of my knives into greg. He did an AMAZING job! He said if it wasnt able to be straightened in his press, then a little reshaping would fix it. Since my knives aren't made anymore... I would do anything to get it fixed. He straightened out my blade and its better than new! I also had him sharpen the rest of my knife set. Everything cost me 17 bucks! I cannot give this guy enough praise. Super nice old navy vet. First of all, Greg's motto is "if it's dull, it's dangerous" and browsing through Greg's store I soon realized I wasn't in any danger because every item he owned was far from dull! There were many specialty knives, throwing knives, machetes, and if you need to take out a vampire anytime soon he even has silver stakes for sale! Some of the brands he carries are Boker, Uzi, and Anza; to name a few. He also carries some specialty knives that have Military ribbon designs on the handles of the knives. Very cool stuff! Greg is also working with the communities disabled veterans. He carries wood work made by disabled veterans and doesn't change them anything for doing so! His wife makes and sells beautiful stained glass and knit hats. His son carves stone and there are many unique stone pieces in the shop for sale. Greg's Sharpening and Cutlery is a full service shop! Greg sharpens anything that is dull! They also make copies of keys, sell used equipment, and he even has a wall of fabulous detailed wooden walking sticks! Talking with Greg we asked him how he chooses what he sells in his shop and he immediately responded with "Everything I purchase I try first and if I don't like it I will not carry it." He also said "I back up every purchase made at my store" Meaning, if you have any issues with your purchase he'd be more than willing to go above and beyond to help you solve it! Greg is all about customer service! He's been doing this since 1990 or longer; Greg knows his stuff! He started out in his garage after becoming a disabled veteran. Greg since moved his business from Spring Valley to La Mesa. He's been doing what he does best for over over 22 years! I got to check out his work station in the back of the store and, wow, he has some amazing equipment! One thing that impressed me was his 31 inch Bed Knife grinder and it was in perfect shape! Greg can handle it all and he does, well. This is truly a gem in the heart of La Mesa and I know I'll be back to talk with Greg - not as a reporter but as friend! Great service, Great price. I used to wait for Henry's grocery sharpening service, then I discovered Greg's. They charge essentially the same price as the traveling guys and do a phenomenal job!! This shop is the best! I used to use another shop who charged a whole lot more, took a lot longer, and the edges were not as sharp. I took a old pair of pruning loppers and asked him if they were worth saving. HeI very confidently said, "Oh yeah." When I picked them up (a scant three hours later!), they were as good - maybe even better - then when they were new! Kitchen knives - beautifully sharp! He even sharpened a20 year old, serrated edged bread knife that had never been sharpened and now it is as good as new! My little pocket knife now slices paper like a razor. Greg had them ready to go when they opened the next morning, in better condition than when I dropped them off to him, and of course, as sharp as the knives will ever get. Greg has always given me great service at bargain prices. In this economy with things tight for a lot of people, he makes good on redoing your old tools/knives so they are (probably) better than new. I I know for sure that my Swiss Army knife was never as sharp new as when he sharpened it for me a couple of months ago, And he's always happy to do it. Plus he is really fair, he is not going to tell you to sharpen or fix something, if he doesn't think he can make it better. It's really worth going in just to see some of the one of a kind stuff he sells. Probably great place to shop for father's day. read more

Just visited Greg for the first time this afternoon. I had two pairs of scissors that I've had for years without any service. Not only did Greg sharpen them quickly, he also adjusted the tension on my Ginghers. They had always been difficult to use, but I just assumed that I did not have very strong hands. He adjusted them and told me how to keep them in well working order. Great local find. Will be returning with the kitchen knives soon. read more

I took in two hunting hatchets and a knife with a "gut hook" that were all dull. I purchased them from EBay and in fact the hatchets were in pretty bad shape as someone had tried to sharpen them that didn't know what they were doing. I dropped them off late Friday afternoon and he called the next moring and they were ready. They looked incredible! I will for sure go to him the next time I something sharpened.
