I was in the pro shop for 5-10 minutes, which was long enough to listen to the three distinguished pro shop staffers, including the head pro, talk sh** condescendingly about two members or players who had recently communicated with them. One of the players they dissed because she was "probably 8 over after 3 holes," as one stellar employee put it. I was standing maybe 10 feet away the whole time. A few minutes later, I called the pro shop to follow up on the issue I had come there for. The pro responded in a VERY sarcastic, passive aggressive, rude tone that made it crystal clear he thought I was beneath his attention. I'm pretty sure that after we hung up I was at least the third customer they talked sh** about that day, but based on my experience I'd say the number is a lot higher than that. I guess the pro shop guys like impressing each other by critiquing the people who fund their salaries. read more

This is one of the best kept "muny" golf courses in Austin. The greens are great, speed can be a bit variable at times, but great compared to other courses in Austin! Good layout with some interesting designs to keep you thinking, although no large hills to contend with or really sharp corners. There's a relatively affordable range program that has good rates on the course, definitely worth it even if just for playing on the course, but the range makes it more than worth it. The 19th hole has a great margarita, albeit a little bit $$ for the size but still a great marg in town!! read more

Course was in good shape, but ultimately service plays a large part in the overall experience. I booked a twilight tee time- due to an application, we expected the pace to be slow. (See attached) Not the issue here. When we made the turn, five groups were backed up. Taking a 2 1/2 hour front nine and making the rest of the round unplayable. So, we check into the clubhouse and ask for a refund or rain check on nine. Simple request, we live a short distance course and would be back frequently. Pro shop employee proceeded to challenge my stance on the remaining 9 holes in a couple of ways: - cart analytics: fair response, try to account for multiple walkers next time. Not sure how you pick that up on your software. - twilight rate: doesn't make sense to reimburse or provide rain check because we already got a discounted rate. It's a Tuesday- the rate isn't drastically different. SIMPLE FIX- make it only good for 9 during twilight. We had a threesome and all would be back. Pro shop employee was rude, combative, and standoffish. Interesting experience to say the least. Either Grey Rock is hurting for revenue or they just don't understand that guests are the lifeblood of their business. Probably won't be back, better clubs out there. read more

Typically a great course, but played today (booked 2 days ago) at a 71$ rate. Showed up, checked in, hit the range & when we go to the starter he lets us know they sanded the greens this morning. It wasn't a lite sanding either...every roll of the ball threw sand. Post round I asked the pro shop if they were really charging me full price after they made the greens pretty much unplayable. A simple yes they were and they turned around. Just make sure before you go what the course conditions are. Def wasn't worth $70+ that I paid read more

My husband and I met up with our colleagues for an early morning round of golf. The Texas hill country landscape of the fairway is phenomenal. We were greeted by one of the golf pros upon arrival. I am a member of an employee resource group with my job and last week we hosted our 3rd annual golf tournament fundraiser at this course and boy was I impressed by the hospitality! I have been a volunteer at all 3 events now and this course has been the best yet in my opinion. We had about 100 golfers that signed up for the tournament and 15-20 volunteers running the show. The course is located in south Austin just off Mopac and about a mile west on 45. The property has an abundance of trees and the club house is located down a short walk behind the stonewall. As I explored the course I could tell it was well kept. The staff that was working with us through the tournament were so attentive. I was sitting out at a hold watching for a hole in one ... (no winners sadly, but maybe next year) and the marshals made sure I had a chair and then eventually came by with a gold cart so I could sit in that. There seemed to be a couple of people that were in charge at the course and they were awesome too. We provided food for the golfers and it was good, definitely better than other golf course food we have had in the past. They have a nice pavilion area with tables and chairs that ended up being perfect for us to gather after to eat, do all the results and door prizes. If you are looking to just play a course or for a place to host a tournament I would definitely recommend checking out Grey Rock! They are top notch here. read more

Played on Thursday 3/23. Fairways were in good shape. Had just rained so a little muddy but overall they were well kept. The thing that killed the experience was both the tee boxes and Greens were in extremely rough shape. Especially the greens, there were several dirt patches, places where the grass was either dormant or non-existent. Especially when you consider how expensive the tee times were, I found it not really worth anything close to what I paid. read more

Beautiful course and very affordable, but if you're a woman, this is not the course for you! First there are only 6 or so women's shirts for purchase in the shop and the dress code is only geared towards men. There are not women options. That's not even the worst part. My girlfriend and I were paired up with two other players, who were men, not a big deal. On our first hole as we were about to move to the green, an employee drove up on a cart and told us we were taking too long and needed to pick up the pace. This was several minutes before the next tee time which was set 20 minutes after ours. He was very rude and didn't even ask for an explanation. We are women so we teed off closer to the hole from the men we were with, and I'm a beginner so I'm a bit slower, but we weren't messing around or breaking any rules. On the next hole, he drove up again and just sat there and watched us. After we teed off he said "awesome" and drove away. Soon after that, another employee drove up. We could tell he was shocked when he saw we were women just playing the game and not doing anything wrong. I asked if he was there because of us. He said he was just there to watch. He got out of his cart and stood there until my girlfriend and I teed off. He then said there wasn't a problem and for us to continue to play and then drove off. He never stayed to watch the men we were with tee off, and he never apologized for his actions or whatever undeserved complaint he received. During our entire 18 holes, the first employee continued to basically stalk us. He kept driving by, stopping to watching us (the women) and then giving us thumbs up before driving off. This made our game very uncomfortable and actually a bit scary. The two men golfing with us were also confused by their behavior. Not once were we doing anything wrong and did not deserve the harassment we received! The reason I even gave them one star is because the course is nice despite there not being any hole number signs or any directions on where to go next. This was our first time, so if it wasn't for the people we golfed with, we would have been very lost. We will not be returning to Grey Rock, and I hope you decide to golf somewhere else as well. read more

Love this golf course and the staff, everyone i friendly and super welcoming. Pro shop is great, range is huge so there is always places to hit. Pace of play can be a little bumpy on 6-8 due to the drivable par 4 6 however a signature hole. Food is great and bartenders are always nice and have good drinks. All around great experience, only thing i would recommend is getting rid of the 3rd party tee time cancellation process on the phone or make it possible to cancel online. Other than that I will be playing here for years to come. read more

The course was kept in great shape. Fairways were plush and greens were cut perfectly; not to fast, not too slow. Definitely a shorter course as there is about 3 or 4 par 4's that are drivable. Very enjoyable. I will play this course again next time I am in Austin. read more

I am going to rate the instruction, not the course. I have taken 5 lessons from Brandon at this golf course. I am a beginner. I am addicted. I wanted to learn fast. Brandon offers a beginner course called "Golf Now" which is a great deal for 5 1 hour lessons at 150 total. I learned a lot. A LOT. I am glad, I spent time/money on lessons b/c otherwise I would have learned it all wrong. He is a patient instructor that seems to really want to help you learn. As many of us who live in Austin know, this course and staff think they are above the rest of us. From making a tee time to checking in the pro shop to the way Marshall on the course mock you. It's not Austin, it's a city course trying to act like a private course. The experience stinks and you get pay $70 during the week to find out. As for the positive, tee boxes could use some work, fairways were solid, greens were quick (although just aerated - so you get a pass on the expected course management). The negative - well...I know there is no such thing as an illegal pin but the rules of golf clearly define that the pin placement should be of certain restraint. (In the link below). Holes 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14 today were all cut on slopes. 7 and 9 were impossible from the fairway and in no way manageable from the fairway. (To be honest here folks, I'm a 4 handicap and play 4 rounds per week - I'm ok and many are better than me but I watched a scratch player 3 putt from 3 feet - all up to the hole and back to him...three times in a row - think putting up a slide) I'm not complaining about tough pin placements. I'm complaining about 3 pin placements half the stick away from the edge. I'm complaining about 6 holes cut on slopes. Whoever cut the holes today doesn't understand the essence of the game. I want Touchstone to read this review (they manage the course). I want the City of Austin to this review. I want you to read this review. You should all be upset. The City of Austin has leased the management rights to this course to what appears to be a less than stellar organization and you and I pay for it. Improve the overall attitude of the staff. Improve the management. Teach the staff to honor the game. It's a good track. People like it. So I read all the reviews about horrible staff and wondered if there was some exaggeration. There was no exaggeration. I called today for a tee time a woman answered and I asked if they could tell me the earliest tee time for three on Thursday. There was a pause and the woman said "you have to prepay before you can book are you willing to do that?" Well no as a matter of fact I'm not I thought. I've never been asked to prepay at a city course. I asked "aren't you a city course? Very long pause. I asked why other city courses don't ask for prepay? She didn't know. "It's just our policy ". Then I asked if the carts are gas powered. Long pause and no answer. At that point I said thanks but no thanks. Booked Blackhawk with no issues. Really really poor customer service. read more

Course is in great shape, played yesterday, perfect day for golf. Not too crowded but it was a Thursday @ 9 AM. Got the deal on Living Social for $40. Great deal but will definitely play there again even without it. Tee boxes & greens in good shape, about average speed on the greens. Nice driving range and practice green/bunker. Be sure to practice in the sand, the traps on the course are deep with soft sand, several fried egg lies in my group and a couple buried in the face where just getting out in one is the only goal. A fair course. The regulars here keep up a brisk pace so keep it in the short grass. Great breakfast burritos! read more

Golf courses are like paintings... everyone likes something different. I like this course a lot. Its challenging but not unplayable for average player. Anyone complaining about the conditions should remember we are in a big drought. I mean biblical drought. Its already better after recent rains, but of course a city course that is trying to be responsible with water usage is going to suffer a little. I would give 5 stars, but they make you practice on turf M-Th on the range. That's a big no-no - especially in summer months when the grass grows fast. Give me grass on the range please. read more

Finally made it to Grey Rock this weekend after wanting to get on this track for quite some time. I paid 45 off Golfnow, and it was a STEAL to get off around 12:30. Clubhouse: Amazing clubhouse nestled in a grove of trees, with extensive gardening surrounding. Very Peaceful - The clubhouse itself is surrounded by a rock wall and has a bar / pro shop inside. The bathroom was spacious, but it seemed like the pro-shop could have been a bit more well stocked (only carried titleist balls) Practice Facilities: Great facilities here. LARGE putting green. Double sided driving range (with balls stacked for you in a pyramid) with various targets. The range balls are in good shape so you aren't hitting rocks (new pinnacle range balls). There is a large chipping area with a huge bunker much like what you'll see on the course, deep, and with ample sand. The course: The course is a GREAT layout. I played from the blue tees which are 71.1/126 playing at 6300 yards. There is a great variety between long and short holes amongst all the par 3s, 4s, and 5s. The course itself can tend to be tight in some spots, with some intimidating carries over bunkers to avoid trouble. If you're out of position on this course, you'll pay by either being in a deep fairway bunker (there are plenty) or under trees, OR in THICK brush. The front nine has development right next to the holes on about 4 holes, so you'll have to take into consideration the OB. This includes the TIGHT #1 ... which I promptly sailed one OB. I usually shoot in the low 80s ... was on pace for such, but the back nine ate me up. The greens on the back definitely seemed well guarded, and i proceeded to shoot a 51 on the back after getting into trouble on several of the holes. Some advice, on the short par 4s, don't go for it. There is a big reward if you can get close, but Grey Rock defends their holes. It's better to take a 6 or 5 iron and just put it in the fairway. Me going driver cost me about 4-5 strokes alone, since I wasn't able to accurately put it close!!! Hit the iron for low scores!!! The course conditions were great and the greens may have been the best I have putt on in Austin (second would go to Falconhead). Despite the course being very flat, I feel the course is much more difficult than Falconhead as the holes are tighter, and you are punished MUCH more for inaccurate shots, especially around the greens. Cost: The Grey Rock website advertises peak time rates of 100. Don't pay these. Although I love this course, I don't think it is worth 100 dollars. Golfnow regularly offers 65 peak hours, and 35-45 afternoon. I would recommend getting on here between 12-2 as the ranger told me the 2PM+ tee times tend to clog up the course. I played with a twosome and we didn't see another group out ALL day which is very rare in Austin. We made it around in 3:20. This is definitely a 50 dollar course and has the ammenities to back it up. The only reason I did not give 5 stars are because the greens were VERY hard to hold, but that may be due to the lack of rain / insane firmness of the greens. If I go again during a wetter month, I'll report back if this is still the case. Go give this course a try. read more

Only reason for 4/5 because their golf carts are gas powered which sounds like go-karts that you would see in the magic kingdom of Disneyland. Called the pro-shop to book a tee time for the weekend and they asked me to go to their website to book. Inconvenient but I went to it only to discover it was requiring me to pay for my entire 4some in advance. I called back and asked if they could put me on their tee sheet just like every other time I have played this course. I was told no, all tee times are now paid in advance. That requires me to collect from friends. Not something I want to bother with. I asked what if it rains on the day we are supposed to play. "We issue rain checks." HAHA! Get bent Grey Rock! I don't want a raincheck if I didn't get to tee off that day. Rainchecks are for rounds started and not completed. read more

The golf course layout is a lot of fun, it is the staff that really sucks the life out of this course. Starting from the bar tender who served me a coffee with baileys (with 15 fruit flies in the baileys - the bartender just put the bottle back in the shelf when I showed her the bugs in my drink)to lack of visible signage to guide you for 1/2 mile to the 1st tee box, to the angry staffer who yells at golfers when you ask where the 1st tee box is to the TWO starters who could not understand a group of four golfers and a group of three golfers playing in consecutive groups to the non-existent beverage cart...and all of this for the low low price of $90...first and last time, all 7 of us were very unimpressed. read more

Decent course, staff are nice and it's convenient to those who live in SW Austin. The problem is the rates are outrageous, they charge $84 on weekends. When a course expects that much money in green fees, the players have very high expectations and unfortunately the experience doesn't come close to what they charge. The fee issues also come into the driving range - $13 to hit off of mats is crazy. They close the grass tees with no heads up, they'll collect your $ and you find out the grass tees are closed when you walk up to hit balls. I simply think they can do better for what they charge. If they don't want to do better, fine - then lower your rates. read more

When it comes to golf on the South/Southwest side of Austin, my money goes to Grey Rock. The course is set up in a manner that is tough but not too tough. I have played it four times during the worst summer drought ever, and the fairways and greens were very well kept and playable. The layout of the course is very friendly to all handicaps. I shoot low to mid 80s and tend to always find myself in a good, yet difficult shot and/or putt. One of the best parts about Grey Rock is the clubhouse and employees. They make every outing feel as if you are a country club member. From the time you get the clubs out of the car to the time you put them back in. The general friendly and upbeat attitude of all at the facility really make you want to play their time and time again. As for playing other places, I am sure you can pay good money to play other courses, but if you want the best bang for your buck Grey Rock is my recommendation. read more

Let me start by saying this layout is great, its one of my favorites in the area. Greyrock also has some great people working there in the grill and the pro shop Ryan, Max, Brian, and Laura are great and very friendly. Unfortunately the fun stops there. First off gas carts, (who buys/leases gas carts on a course this flat?) they are just loud and bothersome. (Especially when your Marshalls do not respect the people actually playing on the course and just zoom around aimlessly) The course conditions get a 3/10 or 4/10 on its best day (no this is not a joke). I have played there multiple times over the last year to only have conditions seemingly worsen each time. They are renovating some or all of their bunkers, but in the process dumped the sand right off the side of the holes, so now you have mounds of sand all over the property that are not marked and are for the most part in play (unless your some awesome golfer who never misses a fairway). A couple of the new bunkers (especially the practice bunker) are already showing the white liners that were just installed months ago. (not sure what happened here) The greens are slow, bumpy and have not been in good shape more than once in my experience. There are foot tall weeds growing in the fairways and in the rough (where the bermuda rough is only 3-4 inches high). Im not sure what happened but it appears they have let this course go as of late or stopped watering, or both. I played here this week and will not be returning unless I hear things have taken a drastic turn for the better. To charge $70-$90 for this golf course is a crime. $25-40 is the right price point for this track, no more. If you live in Circle C this is your closest option, if you do not, I would look for another venue to spend your hard earned $$ as the Morris Williams and Clay/Kizer (municipal courses) are in much better shape for a fraction of the cost. Im very disappointed this place has taken a tumble recently, as I mentioned this is one of my favorite layouts in town, its just in awful shape and not worth the trip/money. read more

The course is in great shape it has come a long way looking at some of the reviews from a few years ago. Definitely a jewel hidden in South Austin. Coming off a hot summer has left most courses in bad shape but not here wonderful greens and fairways. Don't get me started on the staff I would simply say top notch. Great place to play! read more

After a 6 hole rain out, I obtained and misplaced my raincheck. I am from Dallas and returned to Grey Rock Golf Course, in Austin , Tx, months later. I had contacted and explained the situation to the head Pro, prior to making a tee time, hoping to use the raincheck. At first, he said there was nothing he could do because rainchecks had a 90 day time frame. My son and I were very disappointed to hear that, because we planned to play and had obtained a tee time. Having preceded my arrival to the golf course, my son once more spoke to the Pro. Nothing was done at that time, but a few days later, I received a golf certificate for us to come back and play at Grey Rock in compensation for our having paid twice due to the raincheck disappointment. Golf courses are in the hospitality business and it is well in their best interest, to serve their customers. There are plenty of golf courses in and around the Austin area, that we could have chosen to play at, but because I was a visitor, my son chose Grey Rock. Due to this Pro finally making good on our raincheck and double payment, without compensation for a rainout, I will plan future golf with my son, who lives in Austin, and he will continue to play there and bring his golf friends. The moral of the story is, "You can't go wrong treating people right." The good you do comes back a hundredfold. Thanks, Grey Rock, for making this situation right. read more
