Visited after a recent cool/rainy spell in ATX. Luckily there was a group that backed out and I was playing in maybe 30 minutes. I'm not a big hitter but the course played pretty short for me. Paired with an older gentleman who knew the course and he was pretty awesome while I stunk it up pretty good. I felt I should be carrying his bag for him. For me, the course was a bit tight in spots. I found it all too easy to hit into the trees and junk by my ball rolling out or just hitting some 'loose' shots. The greens looked slow and fluffy, but they rolled fast with breaks I had a hard time seeing. I think I did set a record by finishing in less than 4 hours out here. In general, the course was in good shape with some repairs on-going. I had a fun time out there spent with good company. I'd slot this a bit behind Mo Willy/Clay/Kizer. read more

Scheduled a 4:30 tee time, drove 40 minutes to get here and then the lady in the pro shop runs the Westlake girls out in front of us. It's always the same old story here, 5 hour rounds, poor service, very little help. If the Westlake girls get to run the tee sheet then the place is broken. If you haven't played here, you definitely should. This is an Austin local amazing community golf course it's public come support it and enjoy even in fall and winter. Everything was in pretty great shape. Staff is always great. You have a lot of young people coming to play as well, which is always inspiring, they have a little café so you can grab something to eat before or halfway through or after more people need to support this course. There was a lot of talk of them possibly getting rid of it but it's up to the locals to support and tell about this awesome Gem! read more

Great old Austin course with loads of history. Always a great time when I am able to get out and play here. The carts are probably the best in a public course in and around Austin. The only complaint that I have is how hard it is to make a tee time. You have to call in to make a tee time and most of the time the line is busy. They need a website to make it easier. read more

A great historic old golf course. It's fun to play a course so old and imagine playing it with Hickory shafted golf clubs, and gutta purcha (sp?) golf balls. I really enjoyed golf history and to walk around the place and imagine what it used to be like is pure joy. That being said the course is a little long in the tooth. Some of the fairways have bare spots, and the greens are a little shaggy . But overall from UNI it's not bad. It's not very long either so we're beginning golfer won't have too much trouble. The pro shop staff also could be a little friendlier. They seem to enjoy talking with each other more than with the customers, and appear that their only job is to push people out on the course as fast as they can. Granted, it's not a private course that caters to the members, but a little customer service would go along way. That being said, if you are visiting the area, I definitely play Lyons, municipal for its history and its uniqueness . Also, ask the locals if you get paired up with any, about the history and they'll be glad to tell you stories about Ben Hogan, Ben, Crenshaw, and Tom Kite. For all you hackers out there who have not played Lions I would highly recommend that you get your 4some to Lions for a fun day. There have been a number of improvements to the "Muni" and it is in good shape. I can remember when there was minimal irrigation and you needed to have a rock club in your bag if you strayed off the fairway. Even from the blues you do not need your driver on a lot of the holes but this is a good track and it will provide you with a few challenges. For all you CC cats set your expectations accordingly and you will have fun. Read up on the course history grab a few beers and hack away. read more

Their course is fun to play. The bottom nine had straight shots which would require you to be fairly accurate on aim. There were rumors about them closing due to UT upping the cost. That won't take place for a few more years so get your game in before they alter the course or even pick up! read more

I have to give this course more credit than most people do. Granted, the greens aren't as good as Falconhead, but for the price I paid on golfnow I would say it was worth the money. It was fun to play and the pace was great, I would prefer Morris Williams over this course but either would be great for a random game on the weekend. Decided to finally try out Lions since it was nice and cheap on a Sunday afternoon, $20 with cart for 18. I've heard some bad things about this course from other people but it was alright. The greens were in good condition, the fairways were ok. The best thing about the course is that it's a short drive from campus. Clay and Kizer are the better muni's out there but a bit more expensive. read more

First of all, two putting greens. One small, one big (with a giant lion statue in the middle of it). The driving range is terrible. Every mat is on an up-slope and you can't use your woods. Only about 10 spots too and considering this is one of the most played courses in Texas... Course was tough. I played in early spring so the greens and fairways hadn't completely grown in. Bermuda greens are also tough to read for someone who grew up on bent grass. Liked the course set up though. You have to know where to miss; considering it was my first time out there I didn't exactly play too well. Overall a good cheap golf course. Would be 4 stars if not for the range/clubhouse. I hope you play it with someone else who has course knowledge. read more

Foggy morning, birds chirping, grass still wet from the night. Name on the list, short wait but should have called last week for a tee time, just happy to be here. Putt on the perfect practice green listening to old timers talk about their last round or ask where so and so has been. The loudspeaker calls our name to the tee box. Everyone mills about not paying any attention, the place seems as old as it is. I pull my driver out and clean it with a wet towel. Step up on the elevated tee box and get ready to smash the ball. At the last minute I remember that a driver is too much for number 1, iron is better. Trees, green, dew. I hit the ball and it lands in the sweet spot down at the dogleg. I glance back and notice that all those regulars were watching intently, now going back to their discussions, 90 something more to go. As I work my way through the old short course with its mature trees and challenging holes I think of my Dad talking about how Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite played here as students, how legends like Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson played here and bet on hole number 16 to see who could carry the water on their second shot. Doesn't matter because I am going to make my own history here. This is where I will remember golf starting when I am a dad. I hope this is what my ten year old boy is thinking when we play Lions. read more

On a crisp autumn day, my friend and I went on a man-date to whack the crap out of some golf balls. The location is pretty close to campus and I liked the scenery of the area. A nice little get away from all the noisy traffic and awful people on the road who should never be allowed to drive. I can't totally rate the golf course because I haven't had the chance to hit it up. I will say I enjoyed the driving range, about 8-10 spots to tee off, not too large but not too small. The prices were pretty great. $5 for large bucket of balls for the driving range and $3 for a smaller bucket. I highly recommend this place if you're looking to get away from the stinky kids at home or the noise at your house. Clean place, definitely recommended. read more

I played this course for the firs time last week. parking wasn't very good. so we parked along the entrance driveway. the confusion on play time and carts were on us but once we got going they gave us a cart that wasn't ours, it had someone else name on it, no play card and no sand. that day was really windy and had another tournament right before our play time. so the focus was on the larger group. there was no snack cart riding around. everyone inside the club house was tied to the tv, UT game. the course was nice though. greens were well kept and very challenging course. I will go back to try again on a not so windy day. read more

Fun well priced golf. Lions is an alright course in an awesome location. Super close to everything, it's not bad for being in the middle of town. Pros: Its fun, its easy, its cheap and its usually in decent playing condition. Cons: It can get slammed on the weekends and rounds can get really long. Also just like some of the other reviews the staff here really is awful. There not polite or helpful in anyway, but w/e takes me 2 mins to pay and im outta there. Also the driving range here is pathetic and could really use an upgrade. You have to hit off mats that are terrible into a a brown flattish patch of nothing with some random flags, that arent even relatively close to the yardage that is posted. But again its just a driving range im there 5 mins and im gone. Overall: Lions isnt bad but it isnt great. Its a fun course though and great for begginers. Its also pretty well priced and easy to get a tee time. A-OK Lions. read more

I played with 4 (really, 5, but shhh) of my friends on Easter Sunday morning and had a pretty great time. The course is in really good shape and the rates are super reasonable, particularly with cart and club rental factored in. With a cart, clubs, balls, and a 6'er of Lone Star each, the total was around $50 per person. For 4 hours of fun, that's a deal, particularly when compared to the pricing out here in New England. My only real concern was pace of play. With 6 of us playing (although only 5 at a time), we were still catching up to the people in front of us and getting pressure from the groups behind. The marshals gave everyone a hard time but it didn't really solve the issue. I don't have a problem playing a long round, but I want to be left alone if I'm not causing the hold up. Lions is definitely a good place to golf if you want to burn a few hours in Austin. read more

Lions is a fun, easy to walk track. Not at all long, yet you can play most every club in your bag. The price to play is exceptional, and you feel a bit like you are stepping back in time when you play a round there. The negatives: unless you play a dawn patrol round, expect 5+ hours on the course due to 5-somes and the fact that it is a course for players to learn on. How could you deny Muny? I know I can't. I played it today, and I've been playing this course for nearly 20 years and its quite simply divine. Yes, its not as long as many courses, in fact its not long at all. Its not as challenging as a result but its a very well designed course that does dish out punishment for missed shots, though they be more of a slap on the wrist. But I think enough to make it interesting. The most notable feature in my opinion is the land itself it is a beautiful piece of real estate and this course lends itself quite well to walking. I've walked it on many occasions and its probably the perfect walking golf course. You don't get the sense that your in the wilderness. It just feels like your in a great city park on a stroll. In this sense the length and playability of the course almost strikes the perfect balance. Much has been said (including this review) about the apparent lack of challenge of the course but its also home to some of my favorite holes in Austin, some challenging and some just cool. I particularly like the par 5 number 12 which seems like its going to be a breeze with its straightforward wide open drive. If you do hit that good drive (middle of fairway or anywhere right) then trying to reach the green in two is inevitable. The green slopes right and is surrounded by water front as well as right and an old slab of granite to the left (which will send your ball to places not findable) so you can't miss there either. Its a really a well designed hole. After landing on the green, the sloped, often scorched surface will have you face some of the fastest conditions on the course. The number 16 par 4 I don't have to really comment on since Ben Hogan did so way back, and its been in Lions golf lore ever since. That being said I'll offer the same sentiment, its a great hole requiring a perfectly place tee shot to reach the flat area. A tight fairway, trees left and right make it more certain that you'll face a downhill lie to an uphill green. I shot par on my first outing and have maybe made par once since. The number 17 par 3 is notable, It always feels cool and shaded in this cavernous part of the course as the hole is surrounded by hills and trees shooting up all around. Its is the longest par 3 guarded by water front and right. You'd be hard pressed to find a cooler pair of holes than 16 and 17 at Lions. The staff at Muny are usually pretty friendly, and always laid back. If not, they usually err towards complacency rather than being unpleasant. I've never had a problem with the staff, and have had lots of super friendly experiences, and unexpected perks among my visits. Austin keep playing this wonderful gem and keep fighting for her. read more

Lions is pretty close to Heaven. This is a biased review. I've played golf here countless times. If you're lucky enough to have played here hopefully you experienced it's real appeal. There is history, nature, community, excellence, mediocrity, beauty, and just plain fun. The lion statue next to the putting green says it all. One of the places that makes this Austin. Enough said. Great place if you want a golf course that isn't fancy-schmancy. My instructor Erik is so amazing and I've enjoyed learning golf with him. He has amazing technique and he's really getting me hooked into golf. He charges $75/hr but you can also buy a lesson package for a better deal. They are very accommodating and everyone seems to know each other. It is a very tight-knit place with loyal golfers. It's a really friendly atmosphere. There is a lot of area for putting practice while you wait for your tee time. There is a driving range and it normally doesn't get too too crowded. There is also a driving range for lessons only. read more

Really like playing Lions, have played there 4 times in past 2 weeks,and one more today. After 4 its 25.50 with cart and green fee, which works out perfect. I got there around 5:20 the other day after work and got a full 18 in with a 4 some, so plenty of time around 4. The greens have been in better shape then right now, but they are not horrible,just not as good as previous times. Short course, but overall a nice muni. Highly Recommend! read more
